BEULAH HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS NEWS AND EVENTS
Our mission is to provide community services including, feeding the homeless, providing social services and beautification projects in our surrounding community.
E
ach Thanksgiving Season Club Give, a grass roots organization founded and organized by BHU student Mr. Deric Holton desires to feed at least 100 families in the immediate community surrounding the BHU Campus. After holding the reigns for 4 years, Mr. Holton appointed Mr. George Martin as his predecessor after shadowing for one year. Since its inception in August of 2008 Club Give has sponsored Thanksgiving Drives, fed the homeless of Downtown Atlanta and mentored high school students. Starting in September, Club Give began raising funds in their effort to feed at least 100 families. Deric and George received assistance from BHU students, staff, faculty and local stores to help in this mammoth effort. On Saturday November 17, 2012 at 8:00AM Deric, George and a host of volunteers arrived to begin arranging tables, decorating the student center, lining up chairs and setting up the various stations for people to receive their Thanksgiving basket. The set up was an enjoyable process as students, staff and alumni worked hard to ensure the donations would begin promptly at 12 noon. The atmosphere was relaxed as volunteers took pictures, met BHU Alumni, talked about Thanksgiving plans and how they would enjoy their week off from school. At 11:15AM recipients began arriving, thankful that providing their family a Thanksgiving meal was one less thing to worry about. The family sizes varied, from one person to seven. Club Give once again left an impact on our community. In a nation where 1 in 6 people face hunger as a daily reality and 1 in 5 children do not have
enough to eat, Club Give fed at least 100 families and served many more walk-in families. (feedamerica.org/hunger-in-America) At 12 noon Vice President Shawn Adams opened in prayer. The families formed a line as the team began receiving and confirming their Club Give vouchers and preparing boxes. The assembly line of volunteers worked like a well oiled machine filling every box until every family received the necessary items for their Thanksgiving meal. The families received candied yams, rice, cranberry sauce, vegetables and turkey to name a few items. In the midst of passing out baskets a BHU student stopped by with additional items and snacks to give away, ensuring that each family received more than enough. After giving food to those who signed up, there were donations left over for walk-in families to receive a Thanksgiving basket. Deric Holton, George Martin and the Club Give team thanks the BHU family, Kroger, Publix, Concessions International and Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand for their donations and support. International Student Picnic Fun, food and fellowship @ Grant Park
T
his year’s BHU International Student Picnic took place on October 20th at the historic Grant Park. This was a time for all BHU Students to come together as one body and fellowship with one another. This annual event is planned and hosted by the BHU Student Government Association and this year’s SGA planned a great event for all BHU Students to enjoy. Similar to previous years our Korean students showed in mass numbers, bringing family, friends and Korean dishes for all to try. This International Student Picnic was one to remember and we at BHU are looking forward to other SGA Events!

Leadership Ethics Forum I
n a season of challenges and debacles impacting
leadership ethics, the Leadership Department Chair, Dr. Betty Palmer seized the opportunity to address issues in various sectors of life at its Leadership Ethics Forum on November 6, 2012. The panelist for the forum included the Leadership Department Professors. Moderated by Dr. Anyango Reggy, she posed thought provoking ethical questions to each panelist. Professor Flavien Shirandi addressed an issue in politics: In a divisive Presidential Election year with many complicated and emotionally-charged issues, what is the process that a committed Christian can use to make a Christcentered and informed vote with integrity in today’s Presidential election? Can a Christian ethically truly describe him or herself as a member of either major political party? Dr. Betty Palmer addressed an issue in business: Many believe that there are tensions and challenges in bringing Christian ethics to bear on business. Do traditional virtues such as honesty and compassion facilitate the prospect for successful participation in business and making a good profit. How can Christians balance business profits and ethical operations? Dr. Sherry Gaither addressed an issue in church: Over the last several decades many prominent church leaders have had to battle very public ethical attacks on their character and leadership credibility. What can church leaders, their congregations, and the community-at-large do to prevent these kinds of damaging, divisive, and painful
firestorms from occurring? And once they have occurred what can these same constituencies do to effectively manage these firestorms? Professor Merium Leverett addressed an issue in higher education: This year has seen a remarkable number of high profile debacles in higher education, with scandals involving sex abuse, governance issues, and student cheating at some well-respected and storied universities. These and other similar accounts have raised questions of integrity in some prominent segments of the academy. What must be done to eliminate plagiarism in higher education? What are the specific roles of the administration, faculty, staff, and students in higher education in addressing the ethical dilemma of plagiarism? Professor Protip Biswas addressed an issue in the nonprofit sector: Because of the pursuit of their strategic mission and the necessity to raise funds, nonprofit organizations must deal with issues of ethics on an almost constant basis. Specifically, accountability is a serious and long-standing issue for the sector. What are the ethical issues that arise specifically in non-profit organizations? And what are the best ways to promote ethical behavior within non-profit organizations? A lively discussion ensued from the audience as they explored deeper understanding of the issues as well as “take a ways” from the Forum. By: Betty Palmer Betty.Palmer@beulah.org
