BEULAH HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS NEWS AND EVENTS

Beulah and the Korean Connection he rising number of South Korean students at Beulah Heights

University (BHU) is not a product of accidental thinking. The man behind this rise is none other than Dr. John Byeongsoo Kim. A BHU alumnus from the class of 1983, Dr. Kim has worked tirelessly to sell the image and programs of BHU to the Korean population. Only a man who understands the value of a quality biblical education with a global emphasis can achieve such a feat. What Dr. Kim has done is a testament to his faith in his alma mater. In fact, his achievement is more than just a number. He has brought approximately 150 students, not only increasing the student body but enriching it. Their joyful demeanor and rich culture is the icing on the cake. During our recent International Day celebrations held on our campus in March, students and guests who gathered in the Samuel R. Chand Auditorium were treated to some traditional Korean performances capped with a song and dance by the BHU Korean Student Association. We thank all the Korean students and friends for adding flavor to our campus!

ear BHU/Prospective Students:

I am elated to announce the inception of our Doctor of Ministry degree program. The purpose of this degree is to provide advanced professional training for those who are or have been successfully engaged in parish and parachurch ministry. This is a 36-credit hour program designed to help experienced religious professionals reinvigorate and renew their spiritual and intellectual vitality. BHU’s D.Min. is an advanced professional degree, in the practice of ministry, that employs an action- reflection model. It invites individuals to explore, analyze, and develop ministerial strategies that address the challenges and dynamics of a post/post-modern global context. Because the 21st century has presented the Christian community and the world with a multitude of challenges, it is incumbent upon ministry professionals to augment their Christian worldview, skills, talents, attributes, and gifts, in order to address the ambiguities and complexities of a pluralistic and inclusive world context.    

Ms. Schofield please tell us a little about yourself? I currently reside in Atlanta, GA and I am working on completing my dissertation from ORU. Tell us about why you came to BHU and your experience? When I came to BHU I had been serving in ministry for 15 years prior and I was in bondage mentally and spiritually and refused to deal with it. I immediately fell in love with the instructional and academic experience BHU provided,

however, learning was an aspect of why God sent me to Beulah. What has been your biggest challenge since leaving BHU? My biggest challenge has been working with churches/ ministries/leaders/people that are limiting their potential and who refuse to see it. What are your current pursuits right now? My first book will be published in 2012, I am teaching as an Adjunct Professor in the area of Leadership Development & Ministry. As you continue your education and your many pursuits, what is your favorite/guiding scripture? My favorite scripture is Psalm 118: 23 “This is the Lords’ doing, it is marvelous in our eyes” (KJV) “My experience at BHU shaped me and refined me in some areas in which I needed to be sharpened to move toward another dimension in life, family and ministry. Professors’ John Nash and Carolyn Driver played a significant part in my tipping point in life/ministry and our relationship continues to this day”~ Ms. Kim Schofield By: Evan Simmons Evan.Simmons@beulah.org

Several concerns were raised and the various student leaders spoke and rebutted, taking every opportunity to communicate and press upon the student body their plans. There was intense dialogue between the current SGA President, Mr. Evan Simmons and the only other candidate for SGA President, Mr. Arthur Breland. Students witnessed this fruitful dialogue evolve into a cooperative effort and commitment from both to continue to work together in the upcoming academic year to bring positive change to the campus of BHU.

B

eulah Heights has been part of my life since 1973

when I came as a student from India. During my time as a student at Beulah, I served as janitor, breakfast cook and dishwasher. Since my graduation in 1977, while pastoring, I recruited for BHU; raised scholarship funds for 11 students from my church; raised thousands of dollars for special projects; served on the Board of Trustees; served as President (1989 2003) and now as President Emeritus and the Board. With that mutual history, Beulah is a huge part of my story. Beulah Heights is a family affair for the Chand’s. My wife Brenda is also a graduate of Beulah (1973-77) and served as an Administrative Assistant to the Dean & President (1973-79). She has been involved in many areas of service and is now an adjunct Instructor in the Leadership Department. My daughter Deborah is also a graduate of Beulah and

currently serves in the Marketing Department at Beulah as well as a substitute instructor. Beulah has given so much to me and my family—as a donor it is my joy to give back and see Beulah’s vision move forward. As a donor I want to give more than money. I want to demonstrate my confidence in the University. I want to encourage the President and his team. I want to connect Dr. Karanja to potential opportunities and funding prospects. I want to reap in the life hereafter the joys of the harvest of souls for the Lord through the ministry and service of students and graduates of Beulah Heights University. My continued prayers are with President Dr. Benson Karanja and the Beulah team. Beulah Heights University’s best days are yet ahead as the vision expands and becomes reality.
