In search of n i k s r e m m u s y h t l a he Summertime is a great time to be outdoors, but also a key time to be mindful of skin health. Prolonged exposure to hot, dry weather can lead to wrinkles, aging and even skin cancer. It’s never too soon to start protecting your skin, said Tisha Nealy, the spa manager for Ten Aveda salon and spa in Loveland. “Skin care is very important for everybody,” Nealy said. “Starting from when you’re younger, using that
MYTHS AND FACTS Myth: Applying multiple sunblocks will increase skin protection
Fact: The last product applied is the SPF protection you will get from the sun. If you apply a SPF 30 moisturizer followed by an SPF 15 powder, for instance, the level of protection will be SPF 15.
Myth: If I’m indoors or it’s cloudy outside, I don’t need to wear sunscreen
Fact: UV rays pierce through clouds, so wearing sunscreen is important any day, especially if close to water where the sun’s rays reflect. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, UVA rays can pass through window glass, so even indoor areas may not protect from sun damage.
Myth: Tanning outdoors may be dangerous, but tanning indoors is harmless.
Fact: According to the American Cancer Society, tanning beds are just as guilty of causing skin cancer as the sun. Tanning beds and lamps still give out UVA and UVB, so they can be a contributing factor to illness.

sunscreen and wearing a hat will prevent age dark spots in the future.” Summer skin protection comes first and foremost from sunscreen: wearing an SPF 15 or higher protects skin from UV rays which can damage it, said Jen Madrill, a cosmotologist for Xanadu Med Spa. There are two kinds of sunscreen: broad spectrum protection and mineral defense, Madrill said. Mineral defense, a standard SPF 15 sunblock, only protects against UVB rays, the primary cause of sunburn. Broad spectrum, or chemical, protection is often SPF 15 or higher and will specify on the bottle that it protects from both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays cause wrinkles and age spots, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The AAD also recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours for best results. Nealy also recommended being vigilant. “Every time you burn you’re going to create sun damage on your skin,” Nealy said. If a person forgets to apply sunscreen and burns, they can soothe the pain by taking an antiinflamatory like ibuprofen or applying a variety of soothing balms and creams. Products with aloe vera can be particularly helpful, Nealy said, since damaged skin will need to be well-hydrated. Fragrance-free products also help, since those with fragrances can irritate the exposed skin. For a homemade remedy, Madrill recommended a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water or a mixture of skim milk and ice. Both help relieve the heat of the burn, Madrill said. Beyond sunburn, another skin concern for the summer season is dry skin, which is particularly a
problem in Colorado because of the extremely dry climate, Nealy said. Dry skin leads to the buildup of dead skin cells which can cause premature aging. To remedy dry skin, exfoliation should always come before moisturizing. Otherwise, the moisturizer will sit on the dead skin and not do its job, Nealy said. She recommended having a skin care regimen including sunscreen and moisturizer. Daily application of sunscreen, even when it’s cloudy, will help protect skin and prevent aging, according to Nealy. “People don’t realize what a difference it makes in the long run,” she said. While sunburn and dry skin are annoying, prolonged time spent enjoying the outdoors can be potentially dangerous without proper protection. Both types of UV can lead to skin cancer, so the AAD recommends using a broad spectrum sunscreen to shield from them. To identify potential skin cancer, people should look for unusual moles. Dark spots that older people develop when exposed to the sun can also be a sign that something is amiss, Nealy said. “As you age your skin gets thinner, so that’s why you’re noticing those spots,” Nealy said. “If they start changing color, getting darker, they can get cancerous.” The American Cancer Society recommends an “ABCD” test to look for signs of melanoma: if a mole is asymmetrical, has an irregular border, patchy color or a diameter of six millimeters or more across, it may be cancerous and should be checked by a dermatologist. Guides for a skin cancer self-check can be found at the ACS website at www.cancer.org.

Answers to your most common summer skin complaints.
Healing as happy medium Rehabilitation requires patience, attention and balance between activity and rest If you’re injured, don’t stop moving, but don’t push yourself too hard. That might be the best way to sum up advice from Fort Collins experts on recovering from injury. Getting better requires a happy medium, said Dr. Terry Gebhardt, a physical therapist for Colorado Physical Therapy Specialists. “A lot of times when someone has an injury, a person has a tendency to stop moving completely, that can make things worse in some cases,” Gebhardt said. Instead of stopping, a person with an injury should keep moving to help the body heal, he said. The body constantly rebuilds itself based on applied stresses, so some movement will help it repair itself. That doesn’t mean pushing through pain, though. Stacey Weisser, a fitness director and personal trainer at the Fort Collins Club, stressed the same thing. When recovering for injury, it’s important to pay attention to how your body feels and whether any new pains have cropped up. “Be careful. It’s not about showing off,” she said. “Listen to your body ... you know your body the best and a personal trainer can’t tell what you feel.”
MYTHS AND FACTS Myth: Rehab patients should always see a doctor before meeting with a physical therapist. Fact: Physical therapists are not medical doctors, but go through a three-year graduate program after college, which qualifies them to treat rehab patients. Going directly to a PT can save time and money. If you need to see a medical doctor, they can let you know.
Myth: The place where I feel pain is the cause of the pain. Fact: Bodies are complex and often, the location of pain may be misleading. A problem in one part of the body can show up as pain in other locations. For example, knee pain might be the result of a weak hip. To find out the root of pain, see a specialist for a movement assessment. Jupiterimages, thinkstock.com
Myth: Similar pains require similar treatments. Fact: Pain is unique to individuals and can be influenced by diverse factors. Treatment for one patient won’t necessarily work on another. One person’s shoulder pain could be caused by a hip problem, the other’s by heavy lifting. Each needs an individualized assessment to determine the source and treatment.
Another key to recovery is knowing that it takes time, said Sarah Ferree-Hopape, a massage therapist who works with rehabilitation patients. She said patients often expect the process to move faster than it does. Though the process will always be slow, the best way to speed up recovery is to work with a professional and “do homework” like exercises prescribed by a physician, she said. “When they have a team ... that process can move a little bit faster,” Ferree-Hopape said. “A couple different eyeballs looking at everything does tend to move things along.” In order to treat injury, physical therapists and others take a body assessment to determine the origin of the pain, something which is not always obvious due to the complex relationships between parts of the body. Often this is more effective than simply treating the apparent source of pain, Gebhardt said. To avoid injury to begin with, Gebhardt recommends that patients make sure they stretch thoroughly before exercise and pick up physical activity gradually if they haven’t done it in a long time. Before physical activities and sports, athletes should try to slowly warm up the muscles they will need for that activity. If playing a sport like soccer, for instance, they should jog, jump, or shuffle at about 25 percent of the speed that the game will be played, Gebhardt said. “Try to mimic activities that you’re going to be doing on the soccer field,” he said. If a person has been injured before and now wants to prevent new injuries, Weisser recommends that they know their limitations and work with them. She learned the tip through personal experience, when she broke her ankle. She had been a runner, but when she tried to run while healing, she only injured herself further. To help recuperate, Weisser switched from running to bicycling as her main sport. She said she now loves going on 100-mile bike rides. Her ankle does better, too. She said it’s a good reminder that injury can change capabilities, but that it doesn’t have to stop a person completely. “(Getting injured) takes you out of your game,” she said. “A lot of things we do day to day, we can’t do anymore. But you’re not defeated.” By Elisabeth Willner

the Experts say healthy weight loss happens through lifestyle shifts rather than calorie counting
By Elisabeth Willner
8 | Wellness Guide 2012
Often, extra weight or weight gain is not the problem itself, but a symptom of something bigger, Westover said. Gaining weight signals metabolic changes in the body, which could be caused by poor eating habits or other factors such as chronic illness. So what does it take to lose weight in a healthy manner? More than food, according to Weisser and Westover. “Make sure that you’re moving around,” Westover said. “You can eat all the healthy food you want in the whole wide world, and if you sit around on the couch all day, it’s not going to help.” Weisser, who directs group fitness classes and works as a personal trainer, said that daily habits such as getting enough sleep and regular exercise also help lead to weight loss. She recommends cardiovascular exercise for best results. Walking, running, biking and hiking, which all
MYTHS AND FACTS Myth: Skipping meals will help me lose weight. Fact: Skipping a meal causes blood sugar to dip, leading to cravings for a quick sugar boost such as a cookie or candy bar. Ultimately, it can lead to an imbalanced blood sugar metabolism. A better method is to eat regularly, while focusing on eating a balanced diet.
Myth: Healthy weight loss can happen quickly with a strict dieting and exercise regimen. Fact: Healthy weight loss takes time. Although TV shows tout contestants losing 20 pounds in a week, in a non-controlled environment, rapid weight loss can have negative consequences for the heart. As a result, TV stars are monitored constantly by doctors. In the real world, aim for gradual loss, at most 1-3 pounds per week, to stay healthy.
increase heart rate, will not only help shed pounds, but also build the body’s strength and health, Weisser said. Weight lifting can also be beneficial, since by building muscle, the body’s metabolism increases which leads to more calories burned at rest, Weisser said. But for the exercise to be effective, Weisser said it has to be long-term. “It’s a lifestyle change,” Weisser said. “In our society, we’re used to instant gratification. A lot of people say ‘I want to lose all this weight in a month,’ but that’s not going to happen.” Instead, weight loss will happen gradually as people settle into a routine of taking care of their body, Weisser said. Healthy eating habits, and regular exercise will work together to produce results.
Myth: Working out my abs will help me trim fat around my belly. Fact: While exercise burns calories, there’s no such thing as spot toning. To lose one pound of fat, a person must burn 3,500 more calories than they take in during a specific amount of time. A general rule is to not lose more than three pounds per week for healthy weight management.
Myth: Bathroom scales are a good measure of the weight loss progress.
Fact: Scales won’t always reflect weight loss. When shaving off pounds through exercise, people often gain muscle at the same time. If the gained weight of the muscle balances out the lost weight in fat, the effect may not be immediately apparent on the scale. Health professionals can help determine body fat percentage for a more accurate measurement.

Anyone who has tried to lose weight has paid attention to calories at some point. Whether counting them to direct a diet or trying to burn as many as possible with an exercise regimen, calories often become the focus of weight loss attempts. Despite the popularity of counting calories, the technique might not be the best system for weight loss. At least not on its own, according to Fort Collins health specialists. When just looking at calories, weight-loss hopefuls can be misled, said Fort Collins Club fitness director Stacey Weisser. “A lot of people feel like the less calories they eat, the better off they are, which isn’t necessarily the case,” Weisser said. According to Weisser, the number of calories eaten doesn’t matter as much as the quality of calories eaten. With vegetables, for instance, each calorie comes with vitamins and other important nutritional elements, whereas snack foods contain “empty” calories that have no accompanying nutritional benefit. If a person simply eats fewer calories and ignores the other contents of foods, weight loss won’t be healthy, Weisser said. Nutritionist Kathy Westover, the owner of To Your Health Nutrition in Fort Collins, agreed. She works with her clients to develop healthy food plans rather than diets to meet their weight loss goals. “I don’t suggest counting calories,” Westover said. “I suggest trying to eat at least 85 percent of your food from whole foods.” Fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy and other foods “as close to nature as possible” constitute whole foods, Westover said. Eating them allows the body’s metabolic processes to function properly, which maintains healthy weight.
Coping with
stress How to work around survival reflexes for a healthier lifestyle
By Elisabeth Willner

It’s inconvenient now, but stress once had a purpose. When someone tenses up in an uncomfortable situation or struggles with constant time demands, they’re going back to an ingrained self-preservation exercise: fight or flight, said Sarah Ferree-Hopape, the owner of Discover Massage. “We, as a society, spend a lot of time in fight or flight. It’s a survival mechanism,” Ferree-Hopape said. “Ideally, then we counter that fight or flight with something relaxing or quiet.” Often though, busy lifestyles make it difficult to avoid being stressed. Chris Berger, the CEO of Foundations Counseling, said common causes he sees include work, family and money. But stress doesn’t have to be emotional, FerreeHopape said. Physical stress, caused by repetitive motions that strain the body, or a poor diet that prevents the body from healing properly, can also cause problems. “It’s what we do to our bodies and put in our bodies,” Ferree-Hopape said. The two types of stress can also contribute to one and other. For example, if a grandparent has back pain and can’t pick up his or her grandchildren, the physical stress of the back injury might become emotional stress of wanting to be more involved in the grandchildrens’ lives. Coping can involve both independent efforts and help from professionals.
In cases of physical stress, Ferree-Hopape recommends taking time out of the day to spend an hour without expectations or demands on time. Movement also plays a critical role. If someone works a desk job and sits in front of a computer for a good portion of the day, moving outside of the job even by just going on a 10 or 15 minute walk will help prevent stress, Ferree-Hopape said. Relaxation measures such as going to the spa or getting a massage can add to the effects of self-help. Theraputic massage, Ferree-Hopape’s area of expertise, addresses specific areas of the body and retrains them to avoid positions which lead to injury and physical stress. Massage also calms the body and the nervous system, Ferree-Hopape said. “Massage does have tremendous therapeutic value. It’s not just for relaxing; it can really do a lot to help someone reach their health goals,” she said. In cases of emotional stress, another way to promote health and reduce stress is to exercise, said Stacey Weisser, fitness director at the Fort Collins Club. “Exercise is one of the few things proven to treat stress, help you sleep at night and decrease mood swings,” Weisser said. When more independent methods of dealing with stress don’t work, it might be time to seek extra help. A counselor should be sought in cases of extreme stress. When stress begins to impair functioning, change sleeping habits or lead to body changes like weight gain or loss, it has reached a level where extra
help might be needed to manage it, Berger said. Counselors like Berger can aid those dealing with stress by helping them change contributing behaviors and thoughts. Something as simple as moving from an attitude of “I have no options and there’s nothing I can do.” to one of “I can move forward, I can at least do what I can do” can help stem the problem, he said. And no matter what the approach, doing something to mitigate stress is key. “We think it’s important that people don’t let it continue with no action,” he said. “Being passive never works.”
MYTHS AND FACTS Myth: Stress will go away on its own, if I’m determined to get through it. Fact: If your stress is coming from an outside factor like a tough life situation, it’s likely that the stress won’t go away, regardless of how long you wait. Pro-actively trying to mitigate stress by seeking help or taking care of the little things you can control, may be the only way to improve the situation. Myth: Only emotional triggers, like work and family, cause stress. Fact: Repetitive motions or poor diet can lead to pain that manifests itself as physical and emotional stress. Be aware of both kinds of stress, physical and emotional, to prevent them.

5 things to consider before you have plastic surgery When you look in the mirror, do you love what you see? Maybe you’re thinking about a nip here and a tuck there? Or how about a lift — eyelids and chins defy the effects of gravity more than ever. The allure of plastic surgery tantalizes many women and men who want to look younger, firmer or both. But before you dive in, take some time to do a little homework. 1. Finding a surgeon who’s right for you takes time. Most plastic surgeons offer a free consultation, so go ahead and meet several surgeons before making a final decision. And remember to bring your list of questions. Dr. Warren Schutte, M.D., says it’s not going to hurt his feelings if you consult with him at Front Range Plastic Surgery and then meet with his competitors across town. In fact, he encourages people to shop around. “I strongly encourage my patients, if there is some kind of hesitancy, to talk to my colleagues. Go to different people and see if their approach meshes with your idea of what you have in mind.” 2. Consider the surgeon’s repertoire of work, says Dr. Diane Duncan, M.D., with Plastic Surgical Associates. She suggests looking at the book of before and after pictures. Pay close attention to your desired procedure or procedures. Do you like what you see? Or do you hate it? By looking at surgery results, time after time, Duncan says, you quickly will gain a sense of whether you like a physician’s “style of work.” For example, with breast augmentations, Duncan leans more toward, “a natural look,” she says, while other surgeons offer a much different look, with XXXL results. 3. Check credentials. Surgeons should be board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Look for official certificates and the seal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, says Schutte. But also check directly with the organization that issued the certificate. “Go to the American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s website to check.”
10 | Wellness Guide 2012
4. Surgical facilities must stand up to the test. Look for surgery centers with highly recognized accreditations such as the AAAASF certification, which carries significant respect, says Duncan. “The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery gives them a legitmacy,” she says. Because of stringent standards and explicit protocols, it makes sense that ACS backs them up. For example, in its “Standards and Checklists for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery,” AAAASF accreditation requires specific guidelines including: having an available emergency power source on site; for sterilization, at minimum, facilities must have one autoclave on premises; autoclave spore tests must be preformed and documented weekly; operating rooms must be of a certain size that adequately fits all necessary medical equipment and personnel. Translation — surgeons cannot practice out of a 3- by 2-foot back-alley space. Some surgeons, like Duncan, use their own in-house surgical centers while others use outside facilities that meet these and other high standards. 5. Medical tourism is growing. Concerned about the medical bill? Cost-cutting measures have more people heading south of the border or overseas for their plastic surgery and other procedures. But here are a few considerations. Find out if the surgeon’s equipment and facilities are safe by logging onto AAAASF to see if they have met international accreditation standards. The American Society for Plastic Surgeons also has an international surgeon lookup tool. Also, post-op care is an essential part of recovery. Find out if your insurance company will cover you if complications like an infection set in upon returning home. “I think it seems very risky. We hear about all the procedures that went wrong. It’s a bad position to put yourself in to not have quick access to care (with your surgeon) if you need to seen,” says Schutte.

Trip to day spa could be the relaxing break you need What’s better than a relaxing visit to the day spa? Just the name evokes drowsiness and relaxation. When Northern Colorado finally takes a break from its active lifestyle, it always can find a reprieve at the spa. The region offers many options for a local getaway that can improve wellness in comfortable fashion. A day spa may seem like pure luxury to some: paying to lie around, being massaged and pampered among sounds of whale calls and aromatic candles. But a spa offers many of the foundations of wellness. Massages can work out those kinks built up from stress and fatigue, the atmosphere can relax an overworked mind, and just the thought of treating oneself and taking a day or even an hour off can be reenergizing. In fact, spas offer a softer approach to overall health that is often perfect for the consequences of a physically, mentally or emotionally stressful lifestyle. Most spas offer similar services. These typically include such things as full-body massage, aroma therapy, manicures and pedicures, skin and body treatments, and waxing. Some services are for vanity, some for physical relaxation, but they are all meant to make sure the customer leaves feeling great. Choosing a day spa is like choosing a favorite restaurant. It may be possible to thin out a list of favorites by comparing prices, by finding reviews and by asking friends for suggestions, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Each spa is made up of different personalities with their own specialties and should be chosen deliberately. Like any form of health and wellness,
a day spa should be reliable and trustworthy. In fact, if a visit to a spa is intended to satisfy a specific health reason, a physician may be able to offer a list of suggested spas. Of course, the pursuit of finding the perfect spa can be arduous. It may require multiple days of grueling massages and pampering. Perhaps the best way to go about trying out the day spa experience for the first time is to do so with a companion. Whether it be with a spouse, a friend or a group, the comfort of the spa is only enhanced by sharing the experience with another. This also can be a chance for some savings. Most places offer group or couple deals to bring in new customers. A trip to a day spa also can make for a thoughtful gift. A day of special treatment at a spa is a great way to tell someone you care. But if the intimacy and relaxation of a solitary visit sounds enticing, be sure to do some homework. A little Internet browsing and a few phone calls can tease out some great deals as many day spas offer holiday specials and introductory promotions. With many locations in Northern Colorado to choose from, the high likelihood of finding the perfect place at a reasonable price should be quite comforting. Make sure to relax and enjoy the experience. Hard work deserves compensation, and the atmosphere and services at a day spa may lead to a rewarding experience. The worst that can come of it is finally being able to take a break, but in many cases it can become a favorite routine.

Services, atmosphere important when choosing a gym Colorado has long been regarded as one of the healthiest states in the country. Its culture has a textbook ‘work hard, play harder’ lifestyle. Its residents are cyclers, hikers, mountaineers and skiers. The weather and terrain is perfect for yearround outdoor activity, but Colorado’s dedication to health is not just a fair-weather wellness. When the state’s healthy population is not scrambling up and down mountains, it is in the gym maintaining its fitness. For those who don’t frequent gyms, they are often thought of as a line of excessively muscular men watching themselves lift dumbbells in the mirror to the moist aroma of sweat and the shrill electric guitar of AC/DC. But a gym is so much more than that. It could be considered the all-you-can-eat buffet of the fitness world. If it is taken advantage of, it can be a one-stop wellness center. Most gyms are staffed by a group of professionals whose job is to make sure that happens. They can help a new member set up a workout plan that can help them accomplish their goals in a safe and successful manner. Though trainers do charge a fee for their services, their years of training and education make the expense worthwhile. Many gyms will offer a free consultation to new members in addition to other perks. The cost of a gym membership varies depending on the length of contract and the services the gym has to offer, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $60 per month or $250 to $800 per year. Gym
membership fees can seem like a heavy payment for something that could be done at home with some free weights and a pair of running shoes, but giving it a chance with a trial membership usually proves otherwise. Gyms typically offer some variation of free weights, strength equipment and an assortment of cardiovascular machines. Larger gyms may even offer swimming pools, indoor tracks or a variety of game courts. Where a gym can really be worth the investment, however, is in its staff. A good gym will offer weight training instruction, classes of all types and sizes, and at the very least a place for like-minded people to seek and pursue wellness together. So when choosing a gym, a good approach is to weigh the options. Visit their facilities, consider everything they can offer including their promotional deals, determine what they have that others don’t and most importantly make sure the gym and the people feel right. Gym membership is typically a buyer’s market. This means they usually are competitively priced and offer introductory periods that will allow new members to move on if the fit isn’t quite right. Keep in mind, a gym is not just a collection of machines and weights, but is first and foremost a community. Whatever your wellness goals, a gym can be a great place to meet others with similar pursuits and offer a dynamic workout. Luckily, Northern Colorado is a great place to combine outdoor activity with indoor fitness options.

Holistic health options abound in Northern Colorado Northern Colorado residents have a unique set of medical care options. While Poudre Valley Health System and Medical Center of the Rockies help keep the region’s health care cutting edge, Coloradans have an affinity for the natural world and appreciate the need for a balance of mind, body and spirit. For anyone residing in the area, that means a plethora of options that would not be complete without holistic healing. Not to be confused with alternative medicine – often associated with cultural traditions, herbal remedies and superstition – holistic healing is a symbiotic approach perfect for Colorado. It is concerned not only with whatever specific ailment an individual may have, but also their mental, emotional and spiritual state. Though holistic health does stand apart from traditional medicine, it also shares some similarities. Holistic health is based upon a scientific understanding of human biology and greatly overlaps with what goes on at a traditional doctor’s office. But where it is different is in both scope and focus. A holistic practitioner recognizes that pain has a real physical effect on the body and may have originated from physical stress or injury. They also considers how the patient’s overall livelihood is impacting the severity and recovery of that injury.
14 | Wellness Guide 2012
For example, a pulled back may be the result of helping a friend move, but stress at work, a poor diet and an overall imbalance of spirit could be keeping the patient from a full and successful recovery. A holistic approach could include multiple solutions. Though it is typical for a healer to specialize in something such as chiropractics, massage therapy, acupuncture or psychiatrics, there are centers that pull many of these together to heal an individual in mind, body and spirit. One of the great benefits of holistic health is how open it is to new patients and how welcoming that community can be, which might be considered a contrast to the often cold, impersonal feeling of a large hospital. This approach is not for every health concern. Holistic medicine, for example, may not be a logical substitution in the case of severe physical injury or emergency medical response. While the American Cancer Society advocates the benefits of balancing physical health with a good diet and mental wellness, it does warn of holistic health’s more relaxed scientific backing and its use as an alternative to tried-and-true medicine. It suggests approaching holistic medicine with caution and practicing it in combination with traditional medicine. Consult with a trusted physician, do some homework and make sure all options are thoroughly considered when trying holistic healing for the first time. Luckily, Northern Colorado is a great place to try a natural, wellrounded wellness plan.

Which form of massage therapy is best for you? When you need to unwind and relax, a number of options come to mind. Some people make a date with Mother Nature and hike trails at Horsetooth Reservoir. But when sore muscles scream for attention, what better way to relieve pain and increase a zen-like state of relaxation than massage? Deep tissue massage, hot stone, Swedish massage… with so many types to choose from, how do you choose the best one for you? Before you set up an appointment, take a few minutes to assess your needs. For pain management, you might consider spinal reflux therapy (SRT), says Maureen Moon, National Certified Massage Therapist, and past president for the American Massage Therapy Association. Developed by Frank Jarrell, D.C., at the Spinal Reflex Institute, International, in Durango, SRT focuses on the spine, nerves and soft tissues to help restore the body. Moon, who has a master certification in SRT, says it can help alleviate chronic pain and joint issues. Some people report longer-lasting benefits of massage when using SRT. Maybe you’re the lucky one who lives pain free. That’s great news. But you still qualify for some downtime that helps improve stress levels and mental clarity. For people like you, consider an enjoyable hour of Swedish massage. “For pure relaxation, you’re talking about Swedish massage,” says Susan Sollenberger, a registered massage therapist and certified neuromuscular therapist at Tranquil Health Massage and Wellness Center.
16 | Wellness Guide 2012
Considered as one of the most popular, Swedish techniques include long strokes with circular movements. “Most forms of bodywork flow out of Swedish, as a base to get you relaxed so that your body can accept the therapeutic problem solving body work,” says Sollenberger. “When pain is involved, you want a more technical problem-solving massage, like deep tissue, myofascial or neuromuscular massage,” says Sollenberger. Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) works well for people who stand on their feet all day. NMT benefits people who use the same muscles repetitively, such as cyclists, crouched over their handlebars mile after mile,” says Sollenberger. “Even if there’s no pain, when the body is off balance, we quickly notice something isn’t quite right. Some muscles will need to be lengthened and some will need to be softened, to help restore balance.” Don’t assume your therapist is a mind reader. Moon says it’s important that both the therapist and client communicate throughout the massage. “Always let the therapist know if the pressure is too deep or too light. Or if you don’t want a certain area worked on,” she says. When seeking a new therapist, Moon says it’s wise to check the Colorado DORA website to make sure your therapist is in compliance with the law. In Colorado, massage therapists must be registered with Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Under Colorado law, therapists must complete 500 hours of training from an approved massage therapy school before they can practice professionally.

Consider expertise, certification, your condition when choosing a rehabilitation professional After an injury or surgery, the right rehabilitation can make the difference between a return to full function and a long recovery period. Barriers such as pain, stiffness, weakness and poor cognitive functioning can greatly affect your quality of life and warrant the intervention of a specialist. Depending on your injury or illness, physical therapists (PT), occupational therapists (OT) and speech-language pathologists (SLP) are the pros that can help get you back to your normal routines. All rehabilitation professionals have advanced degrees in their chosen specialty and a state-issued license. They receive considerable practical training, both in school and the clinical setting, to deal with a range of conditions. But according to Lisa Fyffe, MS OTR, an OT and assistant professor of occupational therapy at CSU, all therapists are not interchangeable. “Most therapists have a basic level of competency in their field, but if they can’t explain things to you in a way that makes sense, you’re not going to fully benefit from the therapy.” Most therapy referrals come from physicians who interact with rehabilitation professionals on a regular basis. Dr. Sam Laney is a Northern Colorado physiatrist, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, who is selective when it comes to choosin individual therapists. “I prefer when PT’s have a background or angle that they

choose to emphasize, like excellent manual skills or neuromuscular training after strokes,” he says. “I want someone who is trying to be cutting edge in their field.” Dr. Sally Knauer, a Fort Collins orthopedic surgeon, looks at more than just a person’s skill level. “I send my patients to therapists who I know will provide individual attention, and who don’t see too many patients at once,” Dr. Knauer says. She also prefers therapists who are proactive in maintaining regular communication with her office, and who aren’t afraid to change the plan if something isn’t working. The typical course of outpatient therapy runs two to three times per week for about a month, and sessions can last up to an hour. Your provider probably will require you to move in directions that are uncomfortable. They will give you homework that could be challenging. And they will put their hands on you. It’s important, then, to choose someone with whom you feel comfortable. Visit prospective clinics; talk to staff and other patients. Ask your friends about experiences they have had in the past. A personal referral, says Fyffe, might be the best resource of all. “Get three names from sources you trust, and see who makes the most sense to you,” she says. “It’s really important that you connect with your therapist on a personal level.”

Range of products, services available to keep skin healthy Skin is your largest organ, comprising around 15 percent of your body weight and covering an area of up to 20 square feet. Caring for it in Colorado’s dry climate and high elevation requires dedication and sometimes, a little help. If you’re concerned about your skin’s condition, see a dermatologist first. A doctor’s expertise may be needed to rule out serious conditions like skin cancer and allergies. He or she also will educate you on your skin type, which will determine your future choices for skin care products and beneficial procedures. According to Dr. Aaron Bruce, a Loveland dermatologist, the two most important factors in keeping your skin healthy and looking good are sun protection and hydration. Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen and moisturizers easily can be performed on your own. But he also admits that deeper treatments like facials and cosmetic procedures done three or four times a year “can stimulate healthy growth and restimulate collagen formation,” leading to improved quality and look of your skin.

Medical spas function under the direction of a physician, and offer more intensive services with the goal of improving not only appearance, but your skin’s long-term health. Christine Hendrickson, an esthetician at Twenty-Three Trees Medical and Wellness Spa in Fort Collins, says the difference between medical spas and beauty salons is substantial.
“Most skin care companies offer a line of products that they only sell to offices with a medical provider,” she says. “We can offer prescription products that provide results that others cannot, and we can also use the latest technology in terms of lasers and injectibles (such as botox).” The main advantage of medical spas, Hendrickson explains, is that spagrade products work deeper than over-the-counter brands, and their effects last longer. Considering the large number of individual skin types and products on the market, choosing the best facility for you can take time. Colorado estheticians are required to attend a licensed cosmetology school and pass the state board exam. Beyond that, the state doesn’t monitor additional certifications to perform specific procedures, such as lasers and chemical peels. So when it comes to choosing the right provider for you, Hendrickson stresses experience, particularly if you’re planning on having more complex treatments. “Estheticians should keep up with not only the latest trends but their education as well,” she says. “A good esthetician should also take the time to understand your goals and give you options for treatments and costs, leading to a customized treatment plan and home care.” Consistency might end up being the most important factor in your skincare routine. For Bruce, that may mean as little as regular home care and a visit to the spa a few times a year. “Over time,” he says, “that kind of dedication would produce healthier skin. But it’s certainly not a miracle overnight thing.”

Coloradans should be proud that their state owns the distinction of having the lowest obesity rate in the nation, at 21 percent. This number may be of no consolation to those who struggle to drop the pounds. Losing weight is a challenging proposition, and keeping it off takes even more work. In her role as Bariatric Program Manager at Poudre Valley Hospital, Lynelle Diede helps patients find the appropriate resources to lose weight. She says success begins with your primary care physician. “Your doctor will first check the medical aspects of why you might not be able to lose weight with conventional methods,” says Diede. And because many medical conditions that tend to accompany weight gain — diabetes, heart disease and osteoarthritis, for example — can impact nutrition and exercise planning, your physician also will have to clear you to start new diet or exercise programs. It’s important to find a doctor who will take the time to listen to your concerns. Dr. Susan Agrama, a Loveland internist and one of the few doctors in Northern Colorado with a defined interest in helping patients lose weight, feels that longterm success depends most on one’s

readiness to address the causes of weight gain. “I tend to focus on lifestyle changes,” says Agrama, referring specifically to problems such as overeating, poor sleeping and time-management habits. “The goal is to figure out how to reverse habits that got people to where they are.” For many people, a separate visit to a nutritionist may be necessary to help learn how to manage one of the more challenging aspects of weight loss: choosing the right foods. These consultations typically aren’t covered by insurance unless you have another medical diagnosis, such as diabetes or a cardiac problem, and they can be costly. But one session might be enough to get you started on the right track, if you’re intent on following through. Exercise is another key component of weight loss, and Agrama recommends starting slowly and setting small, achievable goals. “The most important things,” she says, “are accessibility and convenience. It can even be in your basement. Any increase in activity can be beneficial.” the keys to successful weight loss are changing habits, setting small goals and being consistent. “Recognizing triggers for overeating and gaining self-awareness,” says Diede, are just as important as eating less and exercising more. And with the right amount of help, it can be done.
