Opening Statement

I am current a third year Urban Planning student at the University of Cincinnati DAAP. Indirectly I have always expressed a passion for the many facets that tie into and are in essence, what urban planning is. Directly after high school I continued my studies at Northern Kentucky University working towards my Sociology degree, after my second year there I took a Sociology Planning and Development class and that moment and that choice of class is the reason I am at DAAP today. To me, Urban Planning is not as simple as one thinks. There are countless factors of a society that gives it, its special character, and with that character there are many things to consider before changing anything or even before keeping something the same. Its almost a snowball affect within a community, social factors affect physical factors, and they affect economic factors, and they affect ecological factors and visa versa. Everything affects everything. Through my years at DAAP I have expanded and learned so many new skills and ideas. Some of my strongest skills include; - Presentation - Project/time management - Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign -GIS -SketchUp

New Richmond, Ohio In my third year at the University of Cincinnati DAAP we were given the task of enthralling our evolving “planning minds into the side of planning that we have yet dived into, the places that were once bustling and centers for commerce but due to societal needs and changes they continued to dwindle down. These places im talking about are river towns along the Ohio River. New Richmond being the river town that I had the opportunity to immerse my theories and thoughts into.

2

New Richmond has a rich history, a history that led to the flourishing village that it once was in the 19th century when the steamboat era made the Ohio River a major artery for communities further away from Cincinnati. With this major artery advantage came disadvantages such as flooding. Population went back and forth due to the fear of flood and now that it has plateaued, there is still a heavy fear driving away new businesses and new residents

City of Sharonville For my second CO-OP I was employed by the City of Sharonville in their Community Development Department. My main objectives throughout my months there included; inspecting and GIS mapping their storm-water outfall sites, updating their zoning map on their website, as well as, but not limited to, helping update their design standards for local business (LB), office business (OB) and general business (GB) zones and displaying it through SketchUp

Warren County Historical Society At my time with the Warren County Historical Society I had the opportunity to expand my skills with SketchUp greatly with my main project of making a 3D model of the new ADA entrance to their museum. In the picture shown of the existing museum, the steps leading up to the door are steep and the clientele that comes into this museum are older so it is not working. So their plan was to build a new entrance in the back of the museum with some help that the Lebanon Public Library was willing to give after getting money from a recent tax levy for a new parking lot. Currently this new addition is under construction.

Oakley, Cincinnati

9

In my first year at DAAP we had a semester long project looking deeper into specific neighborhoods within Cincinnati. The neighborhood that I was tasked with was Oakley. With this semester long project I had to look into many different aspects of this neighborhood; demographics, walk-ability, type of neighborhood, land use and zoning, etc. With this I found that Oakley is a very affluent neighborhood, and really benefits from its location. It is local to many high-end neighborhoods without having to have those steep housing prices, proximity to major arteries and good walk-ability.

Camp Washington

Through our concentration on Camp Washington within this semesters studio it became very clear that Camp Washington was not the most livable neighborhood within Cincinnati. It was merely vacant not due to the proximity to anything or access to major artery roadways but due to the possibility of what this community lacks. It is a largely industrial neighborhood and with that comes consequences; majority of impermeable ground causing storm-water runoff into the Mill Creek which runs alongside the West side of the neighborhood polluting this waterway. Within this studio we were given the task of finding a solution to Camp Washington’s vacancy and storm-water management.
