1000V8 VN GROUP A - THE 1991 TOOHEYS 1000 SPECIAL EDITION HOLDEN VN COMMODORE SS GROUP A -
Biante Model Cars are very pleased to present the ultra cool and very rare 1:18 Scale Holden VN Commodore SS Group A in Metallic Black which was given away as a special promotion during the 1991 Tooheys 1000 by the then principal sponsor. The Holden VN SS Group A was an exceptional Australian muscle car which was built under contract by HSV for General Motors Holden Australia and was released in the month of November almost twenty five years ago in 1990. This car has the honour of being described as the last Group A model to be produced by General Motors Holden Australia due to changes in CAMS regulations. In addition to that title, it also carried the mantle of being the most expensive HSV ever released at that time with a price tag of $68,950 which was $13,000 over initial predictions, which wasn’t the most ideal price point considering the financial hardships Australia was facing during this period. The price tag included a raft of firsts for an Australian produced car including a special 17 inch wheel and tyre combination with 45 inch profile tyres and a completely redeveloped engine with an extra strength manual 6 speed gear box. According to HSV, the 215KW V8 theoretically could produce a maximum speed of something close to 400KM/PH, but the 6th gear ratio was too tall to break any high speed records. In addition to this there was a rumour that General Motors added a speed limiter at the time which would see the fuel supply cut if the vehicle reached speeds of 250KM/PH - but as the case is with many rumours, General Motors never confirmed this. Other technical inclusions that were featured in the VN SS Group A saw the engine block receive a Chevrolet bell housing bolt pattern along with a high torque AP racing clutch, a somewhat redesigned suspension system and a re-engineered engine that had similarities to the previously released VL Group A SV. Another similarity that the VN SS Group A shared with the VL was its body kit and modifications. Although the VN wasn’t quite as radical as the VL, the body kit was developed in Britain’s MIRA wind tunnel and the rear
wheel housings were modified to ensure that there would be enough room for racing tyres when the car was sent to the race track. Initial build numbers for the VN SS Group A were predicted to be 500 units, but the actual number fell short of that figure with only 302 cars eventually being made. Despite the main colour being the Durif Red, there were two rare models that were produced with the Durif Red paint job but were later sprayed a metallic black as part of a prize promotion for the 1991 Tooheys Bathurst 1000. The “Win one for you and a mate” promotion featured two VN Group A’s which featured a red racing stripe down the lower body, special Tooheys 1000 decals and a 1000V8 & 2000V8 NSW registered number plates, with the “1000V8” edition being replicated for this single model release. The VN Group A mould is perhaps one of the finest examples of an Australian die-cast model produced by Biante. With standard features you would expect from us such as fully opening parts, highly detailed engine bay, interior, exterior and undercarriage combined with even higher detailed characteristics including fine seat flocking in the interior, raised “Goodyear Eagle” lettering on the tyre walls and authentic bonnet hinges and gas struts, this is an amazing limited edition model car. We have even replicated the correct build number from the Holden factory for this particular VN on the dash! Ensure you don’t miss out on this iconic muscle car by placing your pre-orders as soon as possible.

Biante News:
JUNE MODEL ANNOUNCEMENTS THE 1978 A9X SEDAN WILL BE AN EXCITING & IMPORTANT ADDITION TO THE BIANTE PETER BROCK COLLECTION.
It has been another super busy month for everyone at Biante Model Cars and we have five new models to announce that will be coming soon from us that are now available to pre-order. One of this month’s announcements that we’re very pleased to be showing collectors is the single version and twinset version of the 1:18 Scale Holden VN Commodore SS Group A in Metallic Black. This is an exceptionally good looking car from the lion’s den and a few people here at Biante even claim that it looks even better than the Durif Red. I will sit on the fence with this one but I must admit, that red pin stripe goes pretty well with the metallic black exterior. You can find out more about the single version on the cover and the twinset version opposite this page. Also announced this month are some classic racing cars that may bring back some memories for our older collectors. First up is the 1:18 Scale Holden LX Torana A9X Sedan driven by Peter Brock at Sandown in 1978. This is one of the rare times Brock drove an A9X sedan and it certainly looks a little strange having the extra door with what has become a very famous livery. As always this model will form part of the Biante Peter Brock Collection and will look great with the previously released ‘78 A9X Hatchbacks that have already been released as part of this collection. Another model we have announced this month was driven by a man who had some very close ties to Peter Brock during the late seventies and even won a couple of Bathurst’s with him - Jim Richards. The 1:18 Scale Ford XY Falcon GTHO Phase III was driven to win the 1972/73 Castrol GTX New Zealand Production Car Championship by a young Jim Richards and it has to be said, this is one of the best looking GTHO’s I have seen. The Metallic Blue livery just looks really impressive and this model is another interesting piece of the
puzzle that is the career of the man affectionately known as Gentleman Jim. Finally for this month is another race car that features a great and unique looking livery, the 1:18 Scale Ford XB Falcon GT Hardtop driven by Ron Dickson and Fred Gibson in the 1977 Hardie-Ferodo 1000. “Big Ears” as it became known wasn’t the most successful car during the great race in 1977 but it certainly was one of the more eye-catching cars on the grid for that year! Also in this issue are a few new models from Kyosho that should be delivered later this year that are available to pre-order from your local Biante dealer. The Lamborghini Veneno 50th Anniversary cars in 1:43 Scale are definitely worth a look. We have also included some recently released models from us and from Autoart and as always, models that are soon to be released by Biante are outlined on the back page. That’s all from me for this month, I hope you get your pre-orders in for these latest new announcements and until next time, happy collecting from Biante. THE 1991 TOOHEYS 1000 SPECIAL EDITION 1000V8 & 2000V8 TWINSET
Biante Model Cars are very excited to present the 1:18 Scale Holden VN Commodore SS Group A 1991 Tooheys 1000 Special Edition twinset. As part of the 1991 running of The Great Race, naming rights sponsor Tooheys held a competition called “Win one for you and a mate” which featured two rare Metallic Black Holden VN Commodore SS Group A’s as the prize for a lucky punter and their best mate. These special edition Group A’s were originally produced from the Holden factory line in the original Durif Red paint job but were later sprayed the custom Metallic Black and featured a red racing stripe around the lower body, special Tooheys 1000 decals and a 1000V8 & 2000V8 NSW registered number plates, both of which have been replicated to form this twinset. The VN Group A mould is perhaps one of the finest examples of an Australian die-cast model produced by Biante. With standard features you would expect from us such as fully opening parts, highly detailed engine bay, interior, exterior and undercarriage combined with even higher detailed characteristics including fine seat flocking in the interior, raised “Goodyear Eagle” lettering on the tyre walls and authentic bonnet hinges and gas struts, this is an amazing limited edition twinset. We have even replicated the correct build numbers from the Holden factory for both of these VN’s on the dash! This twinset will be produced with special edition exterior packaging with each model coming in its own Biante protective foam clam with them both contained within the one exterior box. One numbered Certificate of Authenticity will be included with each twinset based on the number produced.

78 SANDOWN A9X SEDAN *1:18 Scale Prototype Model Shown
A FAMILIAR LIVERY WITH A COUPLE OF EXTRA DOORS THROWN IN Biante Model Cars are pleased to present the 1:18 Scale Holden LX Torana A9X Sedan, driven by Peter Brock at Sandown in 1978, a model which will form an invaluable addition to the Biante Peter Brock Collection. The Holden Dealer Team is synonymous with the career of Peter Brock. Brock spent 16 years (the vast majority of his professional career) driving for the General’s first factory team, which he eventually took control of in 1980. For three years between 1975 and 1977 he did his own thing with the privateer Gown-Hindhaugh effort, his own Team Brock outfit and under the Bill Patterson Racing banner. Harry Firth left the HDT at the end of 1977, which paved the way for Brock to return under the guidance of renowned team manager John Sheppard, but this was no celebrated homecoming, and the hard-nosed Sheppard made Brock work for his status as the team’s number one driver. Prior to the 1978 Australian Touring Car Championship, the first hit-out of the year for touring cars was a non-championship race at Sandown supporting the Rothmans International Series Formula 5000 meeting in February. The Moffat Ford Dealer Team were not present for the event, but Brock was still faced with stiff competition from a horde of other Torana runners including his HDT team-mate John Harvey who was given the proven A9X hatchback to race, while Brock was handed the not-as-funky four-door A9X version. Brock rose to the challenge though, and showed a clean pair of heels in a pair of short sprint races held before a traditional huge Sandown crowd. In the first five-lap race, Brock led home a hard-charging Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan driving Bob Jane’s A9X hatchback with Allan Grice coming home third in a similar 4-door A9X to Brock’s. In the eight-lap final, Brock won convincingly from Bob Morris and Harvey, and proved his point emphatically to Sheppard, and the opposition. From then on, Brock moved into a hatchback A9X for the ATCC and vindicated Sheppard’s decision by winning the opening two rounds at Symmons Plains and Oran Park. Ironically, the 4-door A9X was pressed
back into service for Harvey to drive after he crashed Brock’s A9X in a Friday practice session at Amaroo. Harvey drove the 4-door to second at Wanneroo as part of a historic HDT 1-2-3 finish headed by Brock and rounded out by Wayne Negus. Brock went on to become the first driver to achieve the ‘triple crown’ in 1978, winning the Australian Touring Car Championship, Hang Ten 400 (the forerunner to the Sandown 500) and Hardie Ferodo 1000 at Bathurst. But 1978 was a year marred by a legal tit-for-tat with Moffat’s Ford team, instigated by the HDT who protested the use of roller rockers by the Ford camp, who returned serve by challenging modifications made by the HDT to the A9X’s bodywork. As a result, both teams were disqualified from the fourth round at Sandown and suspended from the sixth round at Calder. After life as a road car, the HDT A9X 4-door was restored some years later and purchased by Melbourne collector Chiomi Gendre who races the car in Heritage Touring Cars. Poignantly, Chiomi had plans for Brock to drive the car at the Historic Sandown meeting in November 2006. Sadly, he was killed in an accident two months prior in Western Australia and never again drove the car as planned. Brock only ever raced the A9X 4-door on that one weekend at Sandown in 1978, but it remains a unique and interesting car in the history of the great man, and holds significance as the first car he drove on his return to the HDT - a tenure which would continue for the next decade and mark the greatest and most memorable period of Brock’s illustrious career. This A9X sedan is a model that Biante have been asked to produce by collectors for a significant amount of time and it will be great to see it sit along side the previously released 1978 A9X Hatchbacks driven by Peter Brock in collections so please place your orders for this special addition to the Biante Peter Brock Collection as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

BIG EARS ON A MOUNTAIN *1:18 Scale Prototype Model Shown
A UNIQUE FORD XB FALCON GT HARDTOP TAKES ON BATHURST Biante Model Cars are excited to present the very unique 1:18 Scale Ford XB Falcon GT Hardtop driven by Ron Dickson and Fred Gibson in the 1977 Hardie-Ferodo 1000. Mention the year 1977 to Ford fans around Australia and one evocative memory will be the first that comes to mind. The sight of Allan Moffat and Colin Bond’s 1-2 formation finish in the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 holds a firm place in the hearts and minds of ‘blue oval’ diehards, and in the history of Australian motorsport.
An over-rev early in the race caused damage to the car’s engine and for the remainder of the day Dickson and Gibson fought on with a lack of power. In the end, only 22 of the 60 starters finished the race of attrition and after just over seven hours the Pioneer Falcon came home 10th, 16 laps adrift of Moffat and Belgian international ace Jacky Ickx. ‘Big Ears’ was also the next Falcon home after the Moffat Fords had crossed the line in famous 1-2 fashion.
Ford teams headed to Mount Panorama in 1977 looking for redemption after a crushing display by Holden in 1976, where Toranas filled the first seven positions in the race and the highest-placed Ford was an under 3-litre class Capri! A total of 11 Falcons were entered for the 1977 edition (the highest number of Falcons at Bathurst in six years) represented by a mix of new XC GS500 Hardtop models, and the older XB GT.
While neither Dickson nor Gibson may be remembered for their achievements in the ‘77 Bathurst classic, both would go on to enjoy very successful careers at high levels in motorsport. Gibson famously went on to join the Nissan factory touring car team, initially as a driver and then team manager and owner of what would ultimately become Gibson Motor Sport, the powerhouse team of Australian touring car racing in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dickson would retire from racing in the late 1980s after 13 Bathurst 1000 starts, the last coming with the factory Jaguar/TWR program in 1985. He later established D3 Motorsport Management, a race track design and development company.
As Ford Australia had recently retired the Falcon GT, the five XB GTs entered in this race would be the last Falcons to ever carry the GT nameplate in the Bathurst 1000. One of these outgoing XB GTs is also notable for one of the most unique and memorable liveries in Australian touring car racing. Ron Dickson’s Pioneer Falcon was easily recognised by its yellow and blue livery, and (in deference to sponsor Pioneer Car Stereo) a giant hand-painted ear on the car’s flanks. This was long before the days of stickers and vinyl application on race cars, and one would dread to think of the job the signwriter would have had if Dickson ever scratched the big Ford! Dickson ran the car in most rounds of the ATCC in 1977 with a best finish of fifth at Lakeside. For the endurance races, Dickson secured the services of Ford hero Fred Gibson as his co-driver, 10 years after Gibson won the Gallaher 500 driving an XR Falcon GT with Harry Firth. With additional backing from Tridon tools and Snooper car alarms, the Pioneer Falcon qualified 22nd with a best time of 2m32.3s, some way off Peter Brock’s pole time of 2m24.1s. However, survival on Sunday counted for more than outright speed in this era of The Great Race.
This is certainly one of the more uniquely decorated models that we have produced at Biante. Produced in diecast with high detail and fully opening parts, featuring countless sprays, masks and tampo printing steps, this is an interesting model for collectors with Bathurst themes and will certainly stand out in any collection. Please place your pre-orders as soon as possible to avoid missing out on “Big Ears”!

NZ PRODUCTION CAR CHAMPION DRIVEN BY JIM RICHARDS
Biante Model Cars are very pleased to present the 1:18 Scale Ford XY Falcon GTHO Phase III Driven by Jim Richards to win the 1972/73 Castrol GTX New Zealand Production Car Championship. This model is one of the more interesting cars that Richards drove during the early days of his career an electric Blue XY GTHO championship winner that ultimately sent him on a path to a long and celebrated touring car career. Arguably, no driver in Australian and New Zealand motorsport has proven their class in a wider range of racing cars than the great Jim Richards. In a career spanning over five decades, ‘Gentleman Jim’ has raced, and won in, touring and production cars, Sports Sedans, Porsches, NASCAR, AUSCAR, rallying, speedway and many more. Among the many cars he’s raced, the expat Kiwi drove an XY Falcon GTHO in his native New Zealand to victory in the 1972/73 Castrol GTX Production Car Championship, a series that drew Kiwi fans to the fences at tracks across the country with big names, great racing and spectacular driving in showroom stockers. After beginning his career in a 1200cc Ford Anglia, Richards came to prominence driving a twin-cam Ford Escort with which he twice won the New Zealand Touring Car Championship. In a theme that would continue throughout his celebrated career, Richards drove a variety of cars during this period and stepped into the popular Castrol GTX Series with a Capri V6. It soon became apparent though that the little Capri would be fighting out of its weight bracket against the likes of the Falcon GTHO and Monaro GTS 350, which ruled Series Production racing in Australia and were now the musthave cars across the Tasman. Richards eventually moved up to a Monaro, which he drove for car dealer Jerry Clayton, one of Auckland’s biggest car dealers. Richards, a mechanic by trade, was also employed by Clayton to prepare the used cars in his yard! Richards’ toughest opponent was Robbie Francevic driving a Falcon GTHO for rival team and car dealership, Team McMillan Ford. However, an internal dispute between the team and Francevic led to the future Volvo touring
car star leaving the McMillan camp, who were then not only seeking a replacement driver but also a staff member to join its new vehicle showroom in Auckland. Richards was recruited for the 1971/72 season to manage the chassis dyno at McMillan’s dealership, and in the process was installed as the driver of the GTHO for the upcoming Castrol GTX season. In a sensational swap, Francevic took Richards’ old seat at Jerry Clayton Motors, who had progressed to a Torana XU-1 and later a GTHO for the 1972/73 season, but could not beat Richards who drove his electric blue Falcon to the title. The McMillan Ford Falcon was, like all cars in the Castrol GTX series, run to almost standard specification. It was imported from Australia and given a shakedown at Baypark Raceway by Richards who (in true 1970s production car style) drove the car to the circuit! From there it was stripped and only its 351 cubic-inch powerplant was blueprinted by noted engine builder Murray Bunn, while the team was able to make minor adjustments to the car’s suspension. Unlike its Australian counterparts that raced at Bathurst on 15”x7” wheels, the Falcons in the Castrol GTX series could only race on standard, steel 14”x6” versions mated to production tyres. With a standard Detroit Locker differential and over 400 horsepower, the big Ford became famous for smoking its tyres in the races as Richards drove it in crowdpleasing style. Jim defended his Castrol GTX title in 1973/74 with a new XA Falcon GT RPO 83, and later in 1974 made his debut in the Hardie Ferodo 1000 driving a Torana L34 with fellow Kiwi Rod Coppins to an excellent third place. In 1975, Richards moved to Australia to pursue his racing career and the rest, as they say, is history. Produced in diecast with fully opening parts, high detail and impressive finishing featuring the Electric Blue Metallic paint work and decoration, this is a model that any touring car fan should have in their collection. Included with this model is a signed Certificate of Authenticity by Jim Richards so place your orders as soon as possible to ensure you don’t miss this historic XY GTHO.
