BEST FRIENDS Mary’s Birthday
bibi Booklet 8
Mary’s Birthday It is Mary’s birthday. The little zebra has hardly slept all night. As the sun comes up, Mary is already wide awake and as fidgety as an ant. She imagines what she will do that day: have a party with her friends, eat a slice of cake, play hide-and-seek, have a race, unwrap her presents and much more.

But first Mary has to invite her friends. On thick paper, she has written
But the cockatoos are not at home. What bad luck. Paula and Pepe, the meerkats, are just cuddling up. “Paula! Pepe!” “Yikes”, squeak the pair and vanish into their hole.
Invitation to a birthday party and included a drawing. Cheerfully, she trots off to Carl and Clara Cockatoo. They are sure to be sitting on their tree, preening their long feathers. “Carl”, calls Mary as loud as she can. “Clara!”

Strange, thinks Mary. Not even meerkat baby Pips is around. What is wrong with her friends? And where are they all? They usually play together every day, and on her birthday – of all days – they are all out. Nobody wants to be alone on their birthday. The little zebra trots home sadly. Pips peeps out from behind a bush. “She’s coming!” whispers the baby meerkat secretively.

“But… thank you!” What a surprise! Pepe has baked a delicious birthday cake. Pips has put the candles on it. Paula has blown up red, yellow and green balloons. The cockatoos have hung up party garlands. And of course everyone has brought a present: two nuts from Carl and Clara two kisses from Pepe and Paula a bouquet of flowers from Pips. Now the party can really begin. Mary can choose what she wants to play, and that is not difficult at all – she always thinks of something. At last, Mary and her friends eat cake. Stop! Blow the candles out first. One, two, three – hooray! Everyone gets a large slice of cake. And birthday girl Mary gets two slices. Text by Bruno Hächler
