The proposal to refine the current situation of North Atwater Park is to transform the original infrastructural ecological park into an experiential ecological park. I proposed the transformation of the topography by experiments on clay module to mimic the stream of storm and urban runoff. Finally, the concept of “braided channel” has been introduced in the new plan. The new “braided channel” can provide variation to the water in terms of speed, quantity and quality. In this way, the topography, water and plants can be combined to create a more dynamic experience in this ecological park.

The idea of fitness park will create a “clearing” in downtown LA. By building the safe enclosure at a scale that is intimate yet public, general yet specific, the community fitness park offers a sustainable alternative and a intriguing twist to notion of “urban escape”, which allows a more dynamic and healthy everyday communality life.

Trees are one of the most important and interesting elements within the natural landscape. Definitively fractal geometries (a fractal is a means to mathematically describe a natural geometry that is self-similar and occupies partial dimensions) they are both overwhelmingly complex to accurately represent, while simultaneously appearing to us to be supremely ordered, balanced, and harmonious. Self-similiar multi-scalar branching geometry – a form carefully reflective of function and force over time. The intriguing branch of the Jacaranda in USC campus sculptured a piece of interesting “tree space” raised above. The space underneath the branch created the connection between tree and people through time. The module translated such time spatial experience by texture, geometry and material.

& Night – Socio-Lighting Dynamic Research 5 Day FEB.13.2015-FEB.23.2015 USC ARCH542bL
Project Location : Vermont Ave.( W Manchester Ave. to Wilshire Blvd.),Los Angeles , CA, USA Instructor: Alison Hirsch Individual Work , AutoCAD, Photoshop,Rhino. The diversity of lightingscape is remarkable in LA. In this research project , I conducted survey along Vermont Ave. It is one of the busiest commercial corridor in LA. Compared with Korean town in the north, there are significantly fewer shadows in the day in South LA. However at night the South part is embraced by unsafe darkness and northern Korean town is substantially lightened up with various light source. Such contrast suggests the potentials of re-framing the lighting environment of South Vermont Ave to provide better public space.
I divide the street into four types of space based pedestrian experience of shadow and lighting. Which are curb edge, sidewalk, threshold(building Facade) and block. By categorizing the size and types of shadows in the day and lighting space at night in those area, I got the slices of the “comfortable tunnel “ along Vermont Ave. In other words, the “comfortable tunnel” is the pathway with cool shadows in the day or enough lighting at night. Those tunnels are significantly larger and continuous in north and disconnected and narrow in south.

Solar Envelope & Solar Fan
Summarizing of the research of day and night lighting environment along Vermont Ave, we can take advantage of the solar energy and improve the public environment. In this way a solar powered infrastructure would be an ideal choice by which we can make use of natural and artificial lighting to create an intriguing public space for local residents. The whole framework is called solar incubator because it functioned as the platform for growing the lively community life. The design of the infrastructure emploies the passive lighting design strategy. The tools of solar envelope and solar fan ensure the amount of sunshine exposure of the infrustructure.

In this phase, we focus on the proposal for the crossing at W Manchester Ave and Vermont Ave. Within the concept of solar powered infrastructure framework , this crossing functions as the identity of the new sustainable community life. The story of natural lighting and artificial lighting are braided into details.

Hazira Hazira, a port town under rapid industrialization, is a natural flood plain constricted by the construction of industries along the coast and the undulating terrain, resulting in fluvial and coastal flooding respectively. There are several issue plaguing in the town such as lack of identity , arbitrary development in the face of the international investment ,economical unbalanced nodes, and reduced ecological environment. The proposal aims to create a water system that not only channelizes the flow of river water and manages the blocked water in the depressions but also responds to the needs of other actors (agriculture, villages, other inhabitants, industries) by weaving them together, resulting in an inclusive system. It is an opportunistic approach as it utilizes the existing conditions on site (natural, social, cultural) to achieve the desired aim. 3

depression in Hazira. The monsoon channel gives a strong identity to this place. Together with the Green mesh (field, park, green corridor) hold the dimension of ECOLOGY. And I am introducing a coastal railway to enhance the traffic system ,attracting the potential investment and integrating the preserved village, the industry and the ecosystem. Thus ,it is the ECONOMY dimension.

The monsoon channel forms the artery and commercial heart , a cluster of new buildings forming a communal spaces with pathways emerging out of it . The hierarchy of open space begins from small courtyards to parks between buildings and then to larger space. The local villagers will benefit from the rising value of the land by getting jobs in new enterprise and living in ecological environment in low risk of flooding.
