A Bible Study of the Bible Whatever the scenario, there’s a book to fit every need. Chefs use cookbooks to help them look great in the kitchen. Quarterbacks use playbooks to make strategic calls. Want to wow a professor? Read the assigned textbook. A good meal from a cookbook can tickle our taste buds, but God’s Word delights our soul. When they want to shine on the field, football players study their playbooks, but God’s Word can set us on a path for virtuous living. And when we want to be in a right relationship with God, only the Bible has the power to transform, pointing us to Jesus.
For the next four weeks, our Bible study will focus on the Bible itself—the Book that we know surpasses all others. As we study, we’ll tackle questions like these: • What’s so special about the Bible? • How can I understand what the Bible says? • Why is it important for me to study the Bible? • What’s the point of the Bible?

Transforming We live in a world that justifies and legalizes what the Bible has clearly declared sinful. As a result, our minds must be conditioned for godly living. When we reject the standards accepted in today’s culture and replace them with the Bible’s standards, God’s transforming power begins working in us. This process is bathed in our prayers, worship, and by studying and meditating on God’s Word.
If we truly believe our “help comes from the Lord” (Ps. 121:2), why do so many people look for it in self-help books? Whether we are in a rocky relationship, a career that hasn’t yet taken off, or we get bad news, God’s Word can revive us (see Key Word a renewing one’s life on p. 11) and give us strength through it all. Its truths penetrate our hearts with life-applicable knowledge and understanding. God’s commands made the Old Testament Jews’ ✱ eyes light up (v. 8) (see Key Words Glossary, pp. 160–161). His Word wasn’t intended to be a boring litany of things they shouldn’t do. Instead, it made their hearts “glad” (v. 8). It also made “the inexperienced wise” (v. 7) by teaching those who were humble and who were willing to be molded by it.

• Read Romans 12:2. How does a renewed mind encourage transformation?
Read Psalm 19:9-10. Self-help books may provide advice or tell us how someone else “made it.” But God Himself instructs us through His Word. The Bible incites healthy “fear” (v. 9)—awe, reverence, humility, and obedience—toward God. It moves us away from selfreliance and dependence on others. It points us closer to the Source of true wisdom. Who or what do you rely on when you seek wisdom? What does Proverbs 9:10 reveal?

This week the Live It! challenge requires an online concordance. Be prepared to explain what a concordance is and how it’s used. If you have a laptop, tablet, or even a smartphone, be prepared to show learners the website with the Bible word search. Otherwise, bring a physical copy from your personal library, public library, or church library to demonstrate.
STEP 2 GRAB AND GO.
Many people keep the owner’s manual for their vehicle in the glove compartment. If this sounds like you, make sure you grab yours before exiting your car. This week the Object Lesson requires you to put your owner’s manual on display. If you don’t have a manual available, look for a sample one online and print the cover page, or ask another attendee to bring the manual for their vehicle.
STEP 3 MAKE A SPECIAL INTRODUCTION.
When is the last time you introduced a learner to Christ by offering the plan of salvation during class? Don’t assume everyone has already made a public confession of faith, especially when visitors attend your session. Review the inside cover page titled, “Born Again.” Think about how you felt when you made this life-altering decision.
THE INCOMPARABLE BOOK (TEACHING PLAN) God’s Word. Others may go to a church social outing but not attend Bible study. Ask: How’s your spiritual appetite? Invite a learner to read the last paragraph under the heading “The Bible Is Priceless.”

STEP 4 ARRIVE EARLY AND MOVE IT.
Some groups meet in coffee shops for Bible study. Other groups meet on-site at church in a room that’s used for multiple purposes. Either way, the setup of your meeting place may be different from time to time. Arriving early, you’ll be able to move chairs and tables around to meet the needs of the learners in your group. You’ll also be able to get settled yourself without feeling rushed.

Welcome members and guests. Say: The previous quarter ended with the unit “My Soul Is a Witness.” Remind learners that our life with Jesus is worth talking about. Invite several volunteers to share their experience from the Live It! challenge. Say: We share Jesus more passionately when we allow God’s Word to penetrate our hearts. Transition to the new unit using the introductory material on page 10.
YOU OBJECT LESSON CAR OWNER’S MANUAL
Display the manual. Ask: Why do we believe what’s printed inside? Emphasize that we trust the source. Ask: What happens when we ignore warning signals and ditch the manual? Invite learners to respond. Say: Like our car manuals the Bible is not meant to be a burden. Following God’s instructions, we find gladness. We can trust the Source. Although an owner’s manual can help enhance our driving experience, it can’t transform the driver. But the Bible can! Through God’s Word, He reveals Himself to us, exposes our faults, and directs us. The next time you use a car owner’s manual, consider how God’s Word is transforming you.

UNIT 1, LESSON 1 (pp. 11–15)
The Incomparable Book
Lesson Passage: Psalm 19:7-14 The Question: What’s so special about the Bible? The Point: The Bible is God’s Word for transforming us. This commentary is designed to help you think about the question, “What’s so special about the Bible?” and drive home this one truth: The Bible is God’s Word for transforming us. FOCUS ON THESE POINTS The Bible Is Powerful (Ps. 19:7-8) The Hebrew word torah is translated “instruction” (v. 7), but elsewhere in Scripture it can be translated “law” or “teaching.” In verse 7, “instruction” not only refers to the five books of Moses but could also include revelation written in Joshua, Judges, Psalm 90 (written by Moses), and others. Pentateuch is the Greek rendering for the five books of Moses. Throughout verses 7-8, four attributes are used to help us understand how marvelous the Word of God is. The term translated “perfect” in verse 7 lets us know that God’s Word is a comprehensive piece; it is “complete” or “whole.” God’s testimony is “trustworthy” (v. 7). The Hebrew word for trustworthy is similar to the word for amen, and in this scenario trustworthy means “sure.” God’s Word shouldn’t bring about doubts. Instead, His Word assures us we can always depend on God’s witness. God’s precepts will never lead us astray. Psalm 19 describes them as “right” (v. 8), which alludes to the concept of straightness. In verses 7-8 we find four attributes of God’s Word, but the two verses also reveal four ministries of God’s Word that exemplify its transforming power in our lives. God’s instruction is aptly suited for “renewing one’s life” (v. 7). It is “living and effective” (Heb. 4:12). It also provides spiritual rebirth (1 Pet. 1:23). The Bible Is Priceless (Ps. 19:9-10) After listing several definitions for God’s Word, David pauses to address an appropriate response to God’s instruction: “fear of the Lord” (v. 9). This type of fear is not about shying away from God because we’re frightened. Rather, a person who “walks in His ways”
(Ps. 128:1) or takes “great delight in His commands” (Ps. 112:1) is happy and will be blessed (Ps. 128:1,4). Consequently, an appropriate fear of God is characterized by submission, love, humility, and reverence toward Him. Many people develop unhealthy fears that leave them troubled. However, godly fear is one that is “pure” (v.9).The word pure is often associated with ceremonial cleansing (Lev. 14). But it can also be associated with objects. God required pure gold to overlay the container that held the Ten Commandments (Ex. 25:11). Here, though, pure is used to describe the condition of our hearts and minds when they coincide with God’s Word. It’s about the purity of our morals. After having paused to write about godly fear, David pens one final definition for God’s Word: “ordinances of the Lord.” The term ordinances can also be translated judgments or verdicts. God is the infinitely wise One, the “Judge of all the earth” (Gen. 18:25).

The Bible Is Purposeful (Ps. 19:11-14) God’s servant David “is warned” (v. 11) by God’s commands, but he also acknowledges “there is a great reward in keeping” (v. 11) them. “Unintentional sins” (v. 12) were accountable to God (Lev. 4; Num. 15:22-29). These sins were committed without the sinner’s knowledge. Constant cleansing (via a sin sacrifice) was needed to atone for this type of sin. “Hidden” sins (v. 12) were sins David didn’t recognize in himself; but others may have noticed them. Such sins could taint David’s name or, worse, bring discredit to God. Unintentional sins could even have referred to sins David secretly held in his heart. These sins could occur with or without proper instruction. “Willful sins” (v. 13) were different. They happened with David’s full knowledge. David called God, his “rock” (v. 14)—a Source of stability and shelter. He also called God his Redeemer (v. 14) because he restored him from his sins. Today believers still have a Rock and Redeemer in Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:18-19).

Since the source of this instruction is “of the Lord” (v. 7), God’s Word is regarded as “holy” (Rom. 1:2), “pure” (Ps. 12:6), inerrant (see Key Words Glossary ✱ perfect on pp. 160–161), and “trustworthy” (v. 7). Its origin is supernatural (2 Pet. 1:20-21). Nothing should be added to or subtracted from it (Rev. 22:18-19); it is a comprehensive guide for living.

WITH WILLING HANDS 1 PETER 4:10-11
WITH READY FEET MATTHEW 28:19-20
Serve describes the Go moves you outside work you do inside your church. Your church is full of ministry and service opportunities. You serve by using your spiritual gifts, skills, and passions to glorify God. All of us must work together for the church to function as God intended.
the church and into the community and the world. Evangelism and missions are ways to go into your community and the world in the name of Jesus Christ. It might be uncomfortable at first, but you will experience first-hand the difference Christ can make through you.
Connect, Grow, Serve, Go must impact YOU, the individual, before it can permeate your circle of friends, your Bible study group, and then the church as a whole. But balance is the key! We must be actively participating in all four areas if we want to be spiritually healthy. All Go and no Connect with God or other believers results in powerless activity and wears you out. A steady diet of Grow without the action of Serve or Go leads to unhealthy spiritual obesity and laziness. We need a balanced spiritual diet to remain fit and able to serve God in the ways He has gifted us. The YOU lessons will help you Connect , Grow , Serve , and Go issue. They will help you check and maintain your spiritual health.
