Reading Alice Munro is the female author who this year has won the ´Nobel prize´ for literature. Alice Munro was born on the 10th, July 1931. Alice Munro’s full name is Alice Ann Laidlaw, she has three daughters, and in 1963 moved to Victoria where she managed a library with her husband. Some of her most famous books are called:

Runaway is the title story about a young woman who, though she thinks she wants to, is incapable of leaving her husband. It contains three stories about a woman named Juliet and the emotions that complicate her intimate relationships. In the first story a young wife and mother who has lost her three children makes a new relationship with another young woman to help heal her emotional pain. In the second story, a young woman reacts to a humiliating seduction. Del Jordan lives out at the end of the Flats Road on her father's fox farm, where her most frequent companions are an eccentric bachelor family friend and her rough younger brother. When she begins spending more time in town, she is surrounded by women, her mother, an agnostic, opinionted woman who sells encyclopedias to local farmers and also her mother's boarder, the lusty Fern Dogherty and her best friend, Naomi, with whom she shares the frustrations and unbridled glee of adolescence.

These are only a few books but Alice Munro is a great writer and has lots of fantastic books and I’m sure anyone that is reading this (any adults) are going to like every book that Alice Munro has write because I think that she is a wonderful writer, well almost everyone thinks that. Atlantic puffin The Atlantic puffin is the smallest species of puffins in existence. The puffin is shaped to facilitate swimming underwater with its compact body and short, powerful wings. As a seabird, puffins spend a lot of their time swimming, diving and feeding. Their diet consists of small fish, such as capelins, herrings and hake. Puffins go to land for four to five months a year to rest and get energy. The Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its life expectancy is about 20 years. It can weigh up to 500 grams.

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) The Beaver can weigh up to 32 kilograms. It is Canada's national symbol, representing the country for over 300 years. Beavers are excellent swimmers. Their front teeth stick out in front of their lips, so that they may cut and chew wood. A beaver's teeth never stop growing. Beavers spend most of their time building dams and lodges in the middle of a lake. A large portion of the beaver population can be found in British Columbia and in lakes and streams all over the rest of Canada.

Harp seal Their average weight for males is of 130 kg. Female´s weight is much smaller. The name “harp seal” comes from the large harp-shaped ring on the seal’s back. Harp seals are light grey. Harp seals are found in the waters of the Arctic and far north Atlantic Ocean. A harp seal’s main diet consists of small fish and crustaceans. Their life expectancy is 30 years. Mothers can have one pup per year. Seal hunters are not allowed to hunt pups, but, as soon as they grow up they are allowed to be hunted because they are too numerous.

Polar bear A male polar bear weighs about 400 to 600 kg. A female polar bear weight is about 150 and 250 kg. A polar bear’s life is about 25 years long. The polar bear’s name means “sea bear”, because it is the only bear that is considered a marine mammal. Its life depends on the marine environment. It is the largest land carnivore in North America. The polar bear is adapted to life in the extremes of the Arctic (Canada). It uses the icebergs to hunt its food: ringed seals, walrus, belugas and narwhals. A polar bear has 5 sharp senses; it can detect a seal’s breathing hole in the ice from about one kilometer away. Polar bears are excellent swimmers. There are between 25000 and 40000 polar bears. In Canada they live between 13000 and 15000. http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/kids/animal-facts/animals.asp

Igloos are small houses made of blocks of ice where Eskimos live in the Arctic part of Canada. Igloos are famous for their spiral dome and ability to protect those inside from the cold. The temperature in the igloo rises up to around 0º C when it´s -40º C outside. Many children, in Canada have at some point tried making their own igloo-like structure in the winter. How do you make an igloo? The first thing that we need to do is to cut a lot of blocks of ice near the space where we want to build the igloo. Then by scraping the ground we must try and reach the hardest ice surface and we put the blocks around a space that may measure up to 50 or 70 cms.

The following subjects are taught in this school and as you will see some of them coincide with the ones that we study here. Subjects: Language A (English), Mathematics, Science Humanities (citizenship), Language B (either French or Mandarin), Technology, Arts (students select either Music, Drama, Visual Arts), P.E. Every month the students talk and discuss about a certain topic and they study about it, in all the subjects, for example: this month they’re talking about electricity, so in art they draw things about electricity, in maths they study things that are related to electricity, in science they study electricity, in technology they do projects related to electricity, in Humanities they talk about how electricity has contributed to our society….. this is called interdisciplinary education. In this school they have an orchestra and each student plays an instrument and at the end of the school year they invite the director and to the rest of the school to go and see them play. Cristina, our class companion now knows how to play the flute!. As you can see Canada is present in many countries.
