THANKSGIVING In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in the United States of America. Americans spend this day together with their families who enjoy a Thanksgiving meal which usually includes the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. On this day, Americans give thanks for the good things they have had in the past year.
THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest Festival traditionally held in Great Britain to mark the end of the local harvest season. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers who celebrated the first American Thanksgiving in 1621. Most people celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with family or friends. They share food, laughter and love.
THANKSGIVING Nowadays, Thanksgiving Day in America is a time to offer thanks, of family reunions and holiday meals. A time of turkeys, pumpkin pie and Indian corn. A time of holiday parades, football games on TV and giant balloons. This year it will be on Thursday, November 22, 2012.
THANKSGIVING The story On Sept. 6, 1620, a group of people called the Pilgrims left Plymouth (England) on a ship called the Mayflower. They were about 100 men, women and children. The voyage took 65 days. They arrived, in November, at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The story of Thanksgiving (Cont.) The first winter was very cold and difficult for the Pilgrims. Many of them were sick and had no food to eat. Less than 50 survived. Some Indians had visited them during winter. One of the kindly Indians was named Squanto and he could speak English. He helped the Pilgrims and the native Americans to become friends.
The story of Thanksgiving (cont.) Indians taught the Pilgrims how to plant their corn, peas, wheat and barley. They also taught them how to hunt and fish for food. The harvest in October was very successful and the Pilgrims had enough food for the winter. It was time to celebrate.

THANKSGIVING Nowadays major American cities have parades, the most famous being New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. American football is also a major part of Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. Professional games are traditionally played on Thanksgiving Day.
