WELCOME 2O11

We believe in live music. We believe in a group of people sitting, standing, leaning, swaying, crouching, or shifting forward to hear other people play music while their hearts beat in the same room. Audiences striving for something, keenly aware that living requires art to survive, that we – human beings – require art to thrive. We believe in the power of performance. We believe in musicians sitting, standing, leaning, swaying, crouching, or shifting forward to create sound. Musicians playing, hearts beating in their bodies, sweat beading on their brows, intellect told to sit this one out. Musicians paying attention to the breeze blowing through the curtain and pointing our faces in its direction. Musicians playing jazz. The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival was started by musicians and music lovers to celebrate this incredible genre that wholeheartedly lends itself to live performance and is best experienced in the present tense and in the presence of others. This Festival, go out and see live music and support the people who devote themselves to learning it and playing it for us. Believe in live music and discover jazz. One of the most amazing parts of our work is witnessing how our extraordinary local and regional sponsors build a structure of support that is so vital to our community. Northfield Savings Bank, the Festival’s Presenting Sponsor, generously donates 10% of their profits to the community, strengthening the local and regional economy in a very real way. Dealer.com, our Premier Sponsor, is an outstanding and vibrant supporter of this creative community and we’re thrilled to welcome them to the family of Festival sponsors. Our Marquee Sponsors – WPTZ-TV NewsChannel 5, Lake Champlain Chocolates and Long Trail Brewing Company – inform, connect, treat and sweeten this community immeasurably every day. Festival Underwriters, too, commit themselves to ensuring this Festival happens: Thank you Comcast, Free Press Media, Gallo Family Vineyards, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Nectar’s, Select Design and Vermont Public Radio. Please see pages 10 and 11 for a full list of sponsors, every one of them essential to the quality and success of this Festival.

The 28th Festival is brimming with must-sees, and this comprehensive Program Guide and discoverjazz.com contain all you need to enjoy

10 unforgettable days of live music. Take a chance during this year’s Festival. Join your community in celebrating jazz. Brian Mital, Managing Director Geeda Searfoorce, Associate Director Lisa Giordano, Artist and Community Relations John Killacky, Executive Director, Festival & Flynn Center for the Performing Arts Arnie Malina, Artistic Director, Festival & Flynn Center for the Performing Arts Burlington Discover Jazz Festival Mission Statement To broaden awareness and appreciation of jazz through quality live performances of national and regional scope; present educational activities that illuminate the art form for students of all ages and backgrounds; showcase Vermont and regional jazz artists, including students; and create a vital city-wide community festival that contributes to the national jazz dialogue. This year the Festival lost a dear friend and essential team member. Michael J. Potashnick – affectionately called “Mike P.” – was a prince of production throughout the Northeast and he performed his role as indispensible Site Manager for the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival with fierce dedication to live music and unrivaled devotion to his compatriots. His commanding presence, ribald sense of humor and unmatched skill made him unquestionably unique and positively Shakespearean.

We will miss you very much, Mike P.

JazzLab brings together a hybrid supergroup featuring stellar Vermont and New Orleans musicians. Drummer Gabe Jarrett, bassist Robinson Morse and flutist/ vocalist Heloise Williams join forces with some of the best emerging artists in New Orleans: percussionist and effects genius Justin Peake and avant-garde composer and band leader Jonathan Freilich. JazzLab records and streams the outcome of this unique collaboration live and remixes some of Williams’ pre-recorded material with the new hybrid group.

JazzLab features a host of eclectic and celebrated musical innovators in jazz, hip–hop, funk and Afrobeat music. Among the most widely known are the electrifying, 9-piece outfit, Snarky Puppy, led by virtuosic electric bass player, Michael League. A stunning cast of acclaimed musicians reveals the epic legacy of Miles Davis’ landmark album on the 40th anniversary of its release. Bitches Brew, Davis’ pioneering work with electronic music, was, in 1970, an augur of jazz’s cross-genre evolution and is, today, hailed by some audiophiles as the greatest jazz

and rock album ever made. A who’s who of jazz, hip–hop and rock artists pack the stage, led by cornetist Graham Haynes, a major force in contemporary electronic and world music. The inimitable Marco Benevento employs pedals, amplifiers, circuit bent toys and sundry effects around his acoustic piano set-up. Sheila JORDAN JAY CLAYTON Internationally acclaimed vocalist, composer, and educator Jay

Clayton has performed and recorded throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe since she began her career nearly 50 years ago. Clayton’s work, which boldly spans the terrain between jazz and new music, weaves standards and original music, and integrates poetry and electronics to create a highly personal, wordless vocabulary that has held rapt audiences at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, and the North Sea and Montmartre Festivals. Sheila Jordan’s uncompromising style was forged in Detroit and New York City clubs in the 1940s and 1950s. Profoundly influenced by instrumentalists and masters like Charlie Parker, Jordan has studied harmony and music theory with Charles Mingus, released her first

“[Poncho Sanchez is] one of the top Latin jazz artists of our time.” — All About Jazz

With nearly 25 recordings for Concord records, Grammy®winning conguero Poncho Sanchez’s interpretation of traditional Afro-Cuban music, rooted in his Tejano-Chicano roots, fuses Latin Jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves that collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. During his fertile 30-year career, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger and film score composer Terence Blanchard has worked with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and Art Blakey, served as the Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and scored nearly 50 films, including nearly every Spike Lee Joint.

Meet the Artist 6:30 PM in FlynnSpace

These music titans set the 2011 Festival ablaze with their project Cubano Be Cubano Bop: A Tribute to Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie. The 1947 Carnegie Hall concert uniting Dizzy Gillespie and the original Conga King Chano Pozo changed the face of musical history and the course of American Jazz. Poncho Sanchez and Terence Blanchard have put together a fiery program that recreates that seminal concert’s AfroCuban standards, plus their own compositions and fresh new collaborations. The Green Mountain State boasts highly competitive high school jazz programs and the Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble will present the best of the best from across the state.

MAT T SCH OFIE LD

British Bluesman Matt Schofield is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and innovative guitarists to have emerged on the world blues scene for several generations. He just won Guitarist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2010 British Blues Awards. Schofield is rated in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time (Guitar & Bass Magazine), putting him in the company of icons Eric Clapton and Peter Green. His seamless playing, which can be heard on his five acclaimed albums, embodies American Blues. His prowess has taken his band to twenty-two countries, where he has stamped his own style on proceedings, slamming into solos that burn with an intensity rarely heard these days and even more rarely in combination with such a technically fluid and melodic approach.

“The Flecktones have a fine time roaming all over the musical map...” — Entertainment Weekly

Fleckies, rejoice! Béla Fleck and the Original Flecktones are taking to the stage with founding member, pianist and harmonica player Howard Levy for the first time in 18 years. Levy joins bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Roy “Future Man” Wooten and incomparable banjoist bandleader Béla Fleck to create a sound that’s impossible to pigeonhole. The extraordinary five-time Grammy®-winning group has toured the world, released 13 critically acclaimed albums and astonished audiences worldwide with its sublime mix of bluegrass, fusion and jazz. Eschewing mere nostalgia, the gathering of the original lineup heralds a rare opportunity to harness the ripe creative energy of artists at the top of their game and will transform casual listeners into devotees from the very first note. Their 14th album, Rocket Science (EOne Music), will catapult the astonishing and virtuosic ensemble – along with its ardent fans – into its next thrilling chapter.
