2015 By The Numbers ●

100 youth in our Core Program

44 All-Stars, with 25 new youth this year

24 Events

200+ hours of community service

24 hours of watershed education lessons

2015 Highlights Structure In 2015, we saw an opportunity to provide a stronger youth voice to programming, and a need to elevate *Youth Advisory Committee

youth with more leadership development. So we created a leadership ladder to define for youth

*Leadership Squad

how they can grow as leaders through the program.

Growth

All-Star Programs

“Growth” has two meanings

for Cadence Youth

Cycling, and this year was big for both. From a programmatic perspective, we’ve expanded with two new teams.

Cadence Youth Cycling Core Spring Programs

This brought us to eight

operating sites in the Spring season.

We also see growth as the growth of each individual. We’ve found that the real magic of our program is in the All-Star program because an All-Star is engaged 3 times longer than a spring athlete, and retention is much higher once a youth become an All-Star. This year, we focused on setting more students up for success in the spring season by helping them become an All-Star, and providing more depth toward All-Star programming.

youth joined the All-Star Leadership Team, making a total of 44

All-Stars.

The Cadence Youth Cycling All-Stars contributed to more than 200 hours of community service throughout Philadelphia’s bicycling community including Pump Track maintenance, teaching young children to ride a bicycle.

Watershed Education

We gained an exciting partnership with Rails-to-Trails this summer. With that came along an opportunity to bring our All-Stars some wonderful lessons in keeping our local watershed clean from our trusted Railsto-Trails Educator Tom McKeon. Watershed

education

lessons

became a fun component of All-Star practices, Circuit Team Practices, and our Leadership Squad. More than

24

hours

of

watershed

education have been included in our programming this season!

Youth Advisory Committee

Cadence Youth Cycling established a Youth Advisory Committee - the first opportunity for our youth to have a louder voice behind the scenes and formally give advice on programming. The Youth Advisory Committee became a driving force in enriching the program further, empowering youth to take shared ownership. Members traveled to Seattle, Washington to attend the Youth Bike Summit and to Washington, DC to attend the National Bike Summit Lobby Day. These youth met monthly and created and led 4 project teams: Tour Team, Fun Team, Social Media Team, and Community Engagement Team.

Cadence Youth Cycling Leadership Squad (CYC.Le Squad)

Through this 6-week leadership development program , 13 youth gained leadership development skills, college and career readiness, real-world career mentors, a better understanding of issues in bicycle infrastructure and watersheds.
