By contrast, this breakout session takes a closer look at the human impact of crashes, especially hit-and-runs. Every crash that results in injury or death changes the lives of the victim and those around him forever. In this breakout session journalists, advocates and victims will discuss the scourge of hit-and-runs and how Vision Zero policies can incorporate the perspective of the victims and their families. Christiaan Abildso, MPH, PhD; Assistant Professor, West Virginia University Dr. Christiaan Abildso is an assistant professor in the Department of Social and Behavior Sciences at the West Virginia University and his research interests include policy and the built environment. Dr. Belwadi serves as a Principal Investigator on several National Science Foundation grants focusing on improving the safety for children in automobiles. He specializes in computational modeling, developing patient specific injury mitigation technologies. Cheryl Bettigole, MD, MPH; Philadelphia Department of Public Health Dr. Cheryl Bettigole is the Director of Get Healthy Philly in the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. She is a board certified family physician and has previously served as the Chief Medical Officer of Complete Care Health Network and as the Clinical Director of City Health Center #10 in Northeast Philadelphia. Juan oversaw the campaign to alert New Yorkers of the new 25 MPH speed limit – a campaign that contributed to a doubling of awareness of the citywide speed limit among drivers as compared to the month prior to the change. As a German Marshall Fund Fellow, Leah researched Vision Zero strategies in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of the 10,000-member San Francisco Bicycle Coalition that promotes bicycling for everyday transportation. Since joining the Bicycle Coalition in 2006, she has been a key player in the Bicycle Coalition’s accomplishments: the $23 million TIGER trail-building grant; naming and building out the Circuit; lobbying successfully for legislation mandating the inclusion of bike parking in new construction projects; Philadelphia’s Complete Streets policy; and coordinating research and analysis of several reports on bicycling in Philadelphia. He led the development of moveDC, the District’s first long-range multimodal transportation plan in almost 20 years, and has led the District’s Vision Zero Initiative since January 2015. Sam’s responsibilities also include managing shared mobility programs such as Capital Bikeshare and carsharing programs in the District.
