Making a difference
Recognition of new skills HE face of volunteering is changing in the experience of the City of Holdfast Bay Council. Previously it has been the domain of the stay-at-home parent and the retired worker looking for some structure to their day and a way to contribute to society. Now, with the most baby boomers reaching retirement age, as well as young people looking to maintain and develop skills between finishing university and getting their careers started, an influx of two very different groups is expected to change the way volunteering agencies operate. City of Holdfast Bay volunteering development officer Mike Feszczak says organisations will have to step up to the plate on a number of fronts. ‘‘The retired baby boomers will be used to working in professional environments with rigorous systems and processes, maximised efficiencies and recognition for their very valuable skills,’’ he said. ‘‘Generations X and Y will be looking at gaining skills and experience as well as expanding their networks of contacts to serve them as they build towards moving into the paid sector. ‘‘This provides an outstanding opportunity for organisations ready to welcome those groups by being able to access an entire spectrum of skills and experience previously unavailable to cash-strapped volunteer agencies.’’ As a result, the council’s volunteering program is undergoing a facelift and will adopt national standards to ensure a professional and productive volunteer experience for everyone.
