UNDREDS of volunteers help Bicycle SA each year, providing bicycling programs and supporting the mission of more people riding more often in safer, healthier communities. Events such as Amy’s Ride SA attracts more than 3000 participants and involves more than 100 volunteers, who provide a range of services including traffic marshalling, distributing refreshments and handling registrations. Virtually every other day there are also smaller rides run by volunteers. Most days volunteers can be found fixing bikes, organising equipment and supporting tourism through Adelaide’s free bike hire program. A core group of volunteers regularly helps Bicycle SA throughout the year, but most volunteers contribute a limited amount of time, helping run an event on a Sunday or working for a few hours in the office on a weekday. Barry, from Old Noarlunga, has been a Bicycle SA volunteer since 2006. A keen bike rider, he repairs bikes and lends a hand at events. ‘‘I like to keep active, get out of the house and be involved,’’ he says. ‘‘I’ve

met last month at the third annual Eldercare Volunteer Summit to co-create a volunteer action plan. The summit provided opportunity for dialogue between participants at all levels of the organisation. Priority areas identified by volunteers at the inaugural 2008 summit were reintroduced and expounded by members of the executive team and the board. Each area was then the subject of brainstorming which raised ideas to be implemented. The current youth engagement focus, for which Eldercare has been awarded a Community Voices development grant through the Office for Volunteers, is a direct result of a past summit. Eldercare student partners will collaborate with residents to prepare creative multimedia artworks for display in the Corporate Resident Art Show, which will be held from August to November.

Whether they are busy young professionals or retirees with spare time on their hands, most volunteers are simply keen to support the community in whatever way they can. Volunteer Services says your time and support will be greatly appreciated and will make a significant difference to the life of someone living with intellectual disability. Ron Smith, 61, has been volunteering at Minda for a year, doing two days of voluntary work at one of Minda’s Day Options programs. ‘‘As a tradesman I enjoy working in the garden and making things and a friend suggested I apply at Minda,’’ he said. ‘‘Everyone is so appreciative of what I do, which makes me feel really good about what I do as it makes a difference.’’ Minda recognises diversity among its volunteers. Volunteers support Minda in a wide variety of roles, in areas including bus driving, socialising, fundraising, gardening and personal grooming.

Do you know your azaleas from your agapanthus? BECOME A VOLUNTEER IN THE 2010 COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAM EXPERIENCE IS A GIFT We want community members to use their experiences in life to help young people to feel good about themselves, have confidence in their future, consider their options, plan their goals and stay connected at school. We are looking for volunteers from our communities who can share their time for an hour each week during school terms to mentor a young person at school. The benefits are rewarding. You’ll help make a difference to a young person’s life, watch them develop, make new friends and have ongoing support and training.
