FOREWORD The Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival started as an entertainment for local people in their own Town Centre. This is still the basic aim, but its growth in popularity has called for development and expansion, and has attracted audiences from a wider area each year.
We try to improve and extend the Festival year by year, while still retaining its unique character. two Theatres to their maximum capacity, but still cannot meet the great demand for tickets. So this year we are extending the Festival by one day. which has added an extra full-length open air concert and three theatre concerts to the programme. We aheady use the Town Centre and our
Each Group performing in the Festival is specially invited, and is chosen to give the finest possible display of their country's Folklore. lt is becoming traditional to invite some old friends to come again, and also to try to extend our range to new countries. This year I am delighted to welcome back the Haifa Students Folklore Group who enchanted us in 1966 and 1968, and the Folk Ensemble 'Urpin'who also starred in I 966. We have not previously had visitors from the Congo or from Norway, so I am especially pleased to welcome the Groups from these two countries, also all the new friends from overseas who are visiting Billingham for the first time. I know that my personal welcome will be multiplied by many thousands during the Festival week.
Although our Festival is unique in Britain, similar events are well established in other European countries. We were therefore honoured to be invited to a European Conference of organisers of Folklore Festivals, to discuss future co-operation. I shall be attending this Conference in France the week before the Billingham Festival, and I hope it will enable us to bring an even wider range of Folklore to Billingham in future years. I thank all those who help to organise and run our Festival-The Arts and Recreation Department of the Teesside Council; other Council Departments, natably the Education Department, who so willingly lend us their premises; and the hundreds of voluntary helpers, who come from practically every Club and Association in Billingham. I also thank Northern Arts, who provide a welcome financial grant. lt is.a pleasure to welcome their Director, Mr. David Dougan, who has kindly agreed to open the Festival. Finally, a welcome to our audience, whose enthusiasm contributes so rnuch to the success of the Festival. Whether you come for the sixth or the first time, I am confident you will enjoy the colour, vitality, and music of the sixth Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival.

BANSKA BYSTRICA
For many people the most memorable of the Billingham Festivals held to date was that of 1966. lt was at this, the second festival, that general interest was aroused and the pattern for future events was set. One of the groups which made a major contribution that year was this Folk Dance and Song Ensemble from the province of Slovakia. They will be made most welcome again and festival supporters will look forward to seeing a good number of members who were here four years ago.
The dances of this region of Central Europe are lively, dynamic and exciting. Several of the items performed in 1966 are being repeated; these include the wild, temperamental Gipsy Dance and the Dance of the Woodcutters and Shepherds. There are however at least 4 new dance items in the repertoire which have won the group acclaim in their performances all over Europe since they were last in Billingham. One of these is arranged by lgor Kovakovic, a lead dancer, who was unfortunately injured in a friendly game of footballthe day before the festival started in 1966; he was glglllto dance a step the whole week and we trust he has better fortune during this visit. The ensemble has an excellent orchestra made up mainly of string instruments and including the now familiar Cymbalom without which no Billingham Festival would be complete. ltems will also be given oq the traditional instruments the Fujara and another which translates as a Whistle Fife.
-
Songs will be given by two lady soloists and one gentleman; the girl's choir which sang here in 1966 will not be present this year. With happy memories of the spectacular performances of 4 years ago we look forward with keen anticipation to seeing this ensemble which appears to have reached even higher standards than those attained when last at Billingham 29

FOLK ENSEMBLE "OCEAN|OUE"
-
CONFOLENS
-
(CHARENTE)
This ensemble is really two dance and music groups in one. France, like many European countries, has a great variety of folk traditions which vary from region to region. The traditional dress and music of the Bretons for example, are totally different to those of the Nicois much more so than the Scots and English. "Oceanique" consists of one group of dancers and musicians from Confolens, a small town near Limoges in Charente and a group of Basques. There is a tremendous contrast of costume, music and dance between the two which will be easily seen by all. "Oceanique" has had a distinguished past and obtained second prize in a major competitive
festival in Poland last Summer.
The group comes to us through Henri Coursaget, Director of the Festival of Confolens which is one of Franee's greatest annual folklore events. There is close contact between the festivals of Confolens and Billingham. A youth delegation of Billingham Festival Workers were guests at Confolens last year. Shortly before our event this year Alderman J. A. Tatchell, Chairman of the Billingham Festival Committee is attending an international conference of Folklore Festival representatives at Confolens. One result of this meeting could be even closer co-operation in future years between these two festivals. The prospect of this makes our guests from France doubly welcome.

FANFARENZUG NIEDERBURG
-
CONSTANCE
This Marching Band comes to us from Constance on the German/Swiss border. The club of which the band is a part, was founded in 1884 and has its origins in the 1 6th Century. The purpose of the Niederburg Club was to continue a custom started in the town 450 years ago i.e. to entertain through the medium of comedy and light farce and in general to promote good humour. One of the a kind of mumming procession; to lead this promain features was the "Hendglonker Umzug" cession and announce the performances of the- club a fanfare group was added. The present band grew out of this group. Before the Second World War the group's performances were confined
to
Southern
Germany but in recent years they have been in great demand in other countries. ln 1966 they attended
the Folklore Festival in San Remo, ltaly; in 1968 they were at Via Reggio and the Festivals of Tarcento and Ligniano, ltaly. Later in that year they took part in the winter festival at Lugano, Switzerland. They have had several performances, broadcast and televised.
The groups instruments are mercenary drums, march drums, valve fanfares, fanfare trumpets and fifes. They have quite a wide repertoire. Some of their items are "Riding-marches" which were played in battles in the middle ages and have been preserved, and passed down, in this area, until the present day. The colourful uniforms (similar to the Swiss Guards of the Vatican City) are copies of those worn by the mercenary soldiers of medieval times. 26

ISRAEL
STUDENTS FOLKLORE GROUP- HAIFA This group is making its third appearance at Billingham and this in itself is indicative of the popularity of these young people from Haifa with our festival audiences. ln addition to the ever popylar items such as the'Dance of Joy'several new.arrangements have been especially prepared for this year's European Tour which takes the ensemble to Austria and ltaly as weil as Engiand. Those persons attending the Jestival for the first time can look forward to an exhilarating . experience; past s_upporters will be making certain that they attend at least one performanc6 9rngg by this dynamic group of young people from lsrael's main port. As in the past the ensemble is under the leadership of Mr. Zeev Sternberg from the youth and Sport Department of Haifa Municipality. Main Choreographer and Artistic Dir6ctor is Jonathan Gabay ex-Army Captain and one time member of lsrael's only professional dance group. Some dances are based on ancient and modern traditions and influenced by the Bible; others
by the foundation of the new state of lsrael; others by the constant military stiuggle which the country has faced in order to survive. Costumes are many and varied with most specially designed for the specific dance being performed.
Music'is provided by flute, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone and drum. This group has wide international experience gained touring Europe every other year during the past decade. On Saturday August 1sth the whole of the second part of the concert at the Forum Theatre is to be given by the Israeli Ensemble. 27

THE COMPREHENSIVE GIRLS SCHOOL CHOIR-OS This choir comes to us from Os near Bergen. lt was formed in 1963 and has been conducted throughout its existence by Henrik Lyssand who will lead the group at Billingham.
The choir has had many successful concerts in Norway and this year won first prize in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's national competition for Youth Choirs. They are making their second visit to England and have also made a concert tour in Denmark. The group performs mainly of folk songs.

There will be between 60 and 65 girls appearing at Billingham. This number presented the festival organisers with an acute billeting problem which was solved by the choir being housed with members of the Durham County Youth Choir who sang at Billingham last year. The choir from Os are the guests of Durham's Youth Choir during their stay and we are grateful for the co-operation of the County Authorities in making it possible for these outstanding young singers to perform at the festival.

SPAIN
SONG AND DANCE GROUP OF LORCA-MURCIA This ensemble from Southern Spain comes to Billingham with an outstanding reputation. They gave a series of brilliant performances at the Festival of Confolens last year and have a most impressive record. On three occasions they have won Spain's national competition for Song and Dance Ensembles and also obtained first prize in a similar event organised by Spanish Television. They have wide international experience taking part twice in the Festival of Nice (France) and touring Mexico, Morocco and ltaly. The songs and dances of Lorca are a characteristic mixture of Murcian and Andalusian traditions. Arabic influence can be noted. Sequidillas, Boleros, Jotas, Malaguenas etc. will all be featured in a large repertoire. The origin of the dances is similar to those in folklore the world over Weddings, Christenings, Patron Saints, Christmas etc. Dances will be accompanied by Guitars, Bandurrias, Lutes and Castanets. Both working and dress costumes will be worn. The girls' national dress is most colourful and they appear to have a high quota of beauties which has been a feature of all the Spanish groups which have attended Billingham in the past. ln one dance the traditional Bride's costume will be
worn. Each theatre programme contains song and musical items as well as dances. ln addition to songs of theii own region the group present others from Galicia, the Balearic lslands and the Canaries.
'Coros y Danzas Lorca' is a branch of Seccion Femenina and we are grateful to Miss Josefa Sampelayo (National Director) and Senor Manuel Fernandez-Delgado Maroto (Director of the Murcian lnternational Festival) who have made their visit to Billingham possible. 30

YUGOSLAVIA
FOLK ENSEMBLE "VLADO TASEVSKI"-SKOPJE (MACEDONIA) This is the fourth consecutive year that a group from Yugoslavia has attended the Billingham Festival. This is a tribute to the popularity of the country's great folk traditions which are such an interesting spectacle when presented as stage entertainment. The different provinces which make up the country have their own costumes, music, dances and, in some instances, their own language. "Tine Rozanc" came from Lljubljana, capital of the northern province of Slovenia; " Branko Cvetkovic' from Belgrade in the central area formerly known as Serbia. Both groups presented items from Macedonia and the Vranje Suite from this region is one of the most exciting dance items ever seen at Billingham. "Vlado Tasevski" are from Macedonia in the south and as expected they will specialise
in the dances, music and songs of their own region. They have the most outstanding reputation of any of our previous visitors. ln the 20 years existence they have given approximateley 2000 concerts in front of 2 million people. the Collar of Gold at They have won two of the most coveted awards of competitive festivals Dijon (France) and First Prize at the Llangollen lnternational Eisteddfod (Wales).

The Tupan and the Tamburitza Orchestra are both included in the group's musical section which also has a Yugoslav bagpipe which will be a new instrument at this festival.
Most of the dances to be performed at Billingham have not been seen here before, The group is sponsored by the Railway Workers Union and most of the members work in this industry.

ForsomeTeesside households there's been an lCl pay-packet every weekfor nearly 50 years. Old-timers still rememberthe days when Billingham village was three pubs and a blacksmith's shop, and lCl started to make ammonia from coalatthe site down the road. That was justthe beginning of a story of continuous growth and investment. Coalgave wayto oilas the basisfor Billingham fertilizers when lCl scientists and technologists discovered the now famous Steam-Naphtha Reforming process. Meanwhile, lCl had started to build one of the world's biggest petrochemicals complexes across the Tees at Wilton. TodaytheWilton-Billingham twins make up one of the largest concentrations of chemical plants in the world. Their products rangefrom fertilizers and basic heavy chemicals to plastics, f i bres and complex petrochemicals-indispensable to British industries, and big money-spinners for Britain's export effort. Last year, lCl's Teesside plants shipped some f30 million worth of products to markets asfar afield as Japan and South America. Billingham village has changed, of course. Thanks largely to the rates paid by lCl over the years, it has become one of the most noteworthy of Britain's new towns. And Teesside f 2.8 million a year in rates from lCl and with 31,000 of-with itscitizens holding lCl jobs bringing in morethan f40 million a year-looks like becoming one of Britain's outstanding new boroughs as well as a major power in world chemical industry.
