'Turning back the time" Welcome to the 2004 Billingham lnternational Festival. This will be our 40th Festival and an anniversary event, which gives us much satisfaction and pride. Our first open air concert in John Whitehead Park in 1965 was attended

by fewer than 200 people and was washed out by heavy rain. That the festival has survived all these years is a testimony to the hard work and devotion of a large band of festival workers who volunteer every year to help with the running of this event, which has grown and expanded into

the internationally known and respected festival it now is. Of course without the support of firstly Billingham U.D.C. and latterly Stockton Borough

Council the event could not have

survived.

This year we have drawn up

a

programme of old friends and new, a mixture that will remind us of passed

glories but also present to our

knowledgeable audiences fresh experiences of groups new to Billingham, who are of the highest quality. Roque Nublo, the group who with their lively music and outgoing personalities captured the hearts of the

festival audiences in the early years,

return as do Ukraine, which was represented by a group from

Manchester at the first festival. With twelve groups of the highest quality this years festival should reach new heights of performance, entertai nment and excellence. The stage is set and all we need now is some sunshine and the support of you our audiences. We hope you enjoy this anniversary year.

\%1Y*^* Harry L. Davies Chairman of B.l.F.F.

It

is a real pleasure and honour for Billingham Festival to welcome the President of CIOFF, the world organisation of Folklore Festivals, Kari Berkholm to open our festival. Kari has led the organisation wisely and using his skills as a former

diplomat has strengthened and united this world wide organisation. We are grateful that in his busy schedule he has found time to visit the Billingham Festival.

August 2005 Over 40 years Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival hosted lnternational Dance Groups from 85 countries of the World.

We will certainly have time straight after the Festival to start looking for new groups for Festival 2005. We are already negotiating with Groups from Belarus and Ecuador. We do have many requests from groups all over the World for an invitation to our Festival, which is usually responded to by a request for a recent video of the group.

We will do our best to try and select the most exciting and exotic Dance Groups for our next 41st Festival.

No doubt too that our Artistic Director, Olga Maloney will continue to present the Festival in new ways. The lnternational Carousel Shows have proven popular as have the new Gala Finales

performed by all the groups together.

4. All Friends and Members will be invited to the 'Chairman's Night', a social evening in the College Theatre.

CIOFF UK National Section has been awarded the honour to host the 34th CIOFF World Congress from 12th to 20th October 2004 in Stockton-on-Tees. The Congress will be held

in the "Swallow" Hotel in Stockton-on-Tees.

ln 1974 CIOFF UK National Section hosted the 5th CIOFF World Congress in Billingham (Stockton on Tees). At that time the Congress took place on a much smaller scale, as only 15 Nations were Members of CIOFF. At present, with the potential possibility of over 150 delegates from over 90 countries taking part in the Congress, we believe it will be an ideal opportunity to put Stocktonon-Tees, Tees Valley and the whole of the North East of England on the World Map. ..{ l
