Welcome to the 48th Festival Festival, which is at the heart of this community, has helped it to do so. There are now people in every corner of the world who may not have heard of Middlesbrough or even London but who know all about the friendly, industrious folk of Billingham. Without the ongoing support of Stockton Borough Council, the Arts Council, the Festival’s fantastic band of volunteers, all our other helpers and patrons, our performers, our audiences and the wonderful people of Billingham, one of the world’s greatest festivals of the people would simply not happen – and that would be a tragedy. It is also an enormous pleasure to welcome to this year’s Festival Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and a former and valued Festival volunteer, Mr Alex Cunningham, once our Press Officer and now Member of Parliament for Stockton North. In whatever capacity you are here at this 48th Festival, welcome - and enjoy every minute of it. Joe Maloney – Festival Director, Secretary General CIOFF UK

very year at about this time, something completely magical happens in our little town of Billingham, something of which we are immensely proud – and deservedly so! This is the occasion on which the world really does beat a path to our door, loaning its precious dancers and musicians from far and near to share with us for eight days their varied and fascinating cultures, drawing along in their colourful wake visitors from so many parts of Britain as well as from much further afield. Those who come to this priceless Festival do so in friendship and are always delighted by the warm, generous welcome they receive in return from the people of Billingham, many of whom are attending this year for the first time and mingling with others who have cherished this event for almost half a century. Billingham is a wonderful community which has worked tirelessly across the years since its creation to put itself firmly on the world map and its continuing support of this International
A message from Bob Cook A
Councillor Bob Cook Leader of Stockton Borough Council
s Leader of Stockton Borough Council and somebody who was born and brought up in Billingham, I am proud and delighted to have been asked to open the Billingham International Folklore festival in the 48th year of this fantastic, international-renowned event. Looking at the programme, I am sure it’s going to be a fantastic week of music, dance and colour from groups from across the world. The event is only made possible by the talent of the performers, the support of the sponsors and the hard work of the teams of local volunteers behind the scenes who between them make everything happen. It will also be good to be back into the Forum once again following its £18.5 million refurbishment. I know our visitors will enjoy the warmest of Billingham welcomes and I hope the weather is kind to us – although it may be slightly cooler than some of the performers will be used to. Councillor Bob Cook 3

● BILLINGHAM FESTIVAL VIRTUAL MUSEUM In early September 2010 we received a generous grant of from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards our project “The Legacy of Billingham Festival”. This grant enables us to collect the memories of those who have organised, volunteered and performed here over the years. Over the three years until 2014, these historic memoirs, together with all the videos, photographs, brochures and Festival programmes will be built into a huge and permanent computer archive (Virtual Festival Museum) making it accessible to all. To create the virtual museum we need your help! Everyone who has ever been to the Festival, has their own memories which we’d like you to share with us. To do so, you can write to us at the Festival office, email us or send us your stories through our Website by submitting them through our “Message Board”. If you have any of the old Festival photographs, video footage or old festival programmes or posters you would like to donate to our Festival archives we would be delighted to hear from you. Please get in touch, we are waiting to hear from you! 11
