Olga Maloney Artistic Director President of R CIOFF North European Sector illingham Festival 2013 is proud to present to you the line-up of outstanding dance companies from across the globe and the UK, presenting a variety of dance styles, from traditional to contemporary dance companies inspired by world traditional cultures, including Royal Chinese, Latin American, Basque and Kathak Dance, Chinese Martial Arts, Precision Clogging and Hip Hop, there this something for everyone to enjoy. This year the Billingham Festival will literally take over the Billingham Town Centre for a whole eight days with daily Festival Concerts at the Arena, which will be erected next to the Forum, daily free music and dance mini-concerts at the site of the former Well and on the Band Stand, the extremely popular UNCLE BIFF Children’s Club and International Youth Dance Workshops will move into the former Bonmarche shop, and for the first time an internationally acclaimed 3D Installation (five-minute 3D movie) “Tango de Soledad” by Billy Cowie will be shown FREE in the former Shoezone shop. Alongside the great variety of the traditional International Dance and Music Companies including Vlado Tasevski (Macedonia), Decanos de la Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico), Manbefor (Papua /Indonesia), Peru Multicolor (Peru), Volya (Ukraine/Canada) and Bailey Mountain Cloggers (USA), for the first time within the framework of the new “Dance Gateway” Programme the festival will open its

doors to Professional Contemporary Dance Companies from abroad, who will present their work, inspired by multi-cultural roots: Oinkari Dance Company (Basque, Spain) and Dance Village Arts Company (Taiwan). They will showcase their work at the new state-of-the-art dance venue – Picture House – in Billingham. Funded by the Arts Council England the festival programme will also include performances and workshops of four outstanding professional arts companies based in UK. Cross-arts production company ZENDEH has been commissioned to create mini-stories to be presented at the three Festival Gala Concerts in Forum Theatre, Middlesbrough Theatre and Festival Arena. ZENDEH also spent a week in Billingham South Community Primary School running “Stories of the World” cross-arts workshops. As the result of the residency children participated in creation of film and images, which will be displayed as part of the festival performances. The Sonia Sabri Dance Company, a dynamic company which has established an international reputation for presenting Kathak dance in a contemporary context, will showcase their new production Jugni – an explosion of dance, music and meaning with soaring live vocals and percussion. They also run a dance residency programme prior to the festival, culminating in residency participants performing a curtain-raiser dance piece. We are very excited to present to Billingham Festival audiences “The Lock In Dance Show”, which recently had a huge success at Glastonbury Festival, which will include an international twist, with Ukraine, USA and Mexico performing at the show as “Guests”, to be seen only at the Forum Theatre. The festival 2013 will also see the return of one of the audience favourites – “Tango. 100 Years of Passion!” Dance and Music Show by Alma de Tango with international tango dancers from New Zealand, Holland, Germany and the UK. Using this opportunity we would like to thank all of you for your support and hope that you enjoy the 2013 festival.

A message from Reuben Kench I

am delighted and honoured to be invited to open the 49th Billingham International Folklore Festival. Amidst talk of cuts and recession, it is good to be reminded of the power of music, song, and dance to lift the spirits and there is a tendency in this age of global communications to think that everything can be seen or experienced on screen, via the internet or on television. When BIFF was inaugurated, the costumes, songs and appearances of performers from far-flung corners of the world would have been exotic and unfamiliar. But despite being able to see those corners of the world from the corner of our sitting room, there is still something unique, authentic, and moving about seeing those performers live; we laugh when they laugh, smile with them, and are reminded of how we are all, really, the same. Congratulations to Joe and Olga Maloney and the rest of the festival workers for their magnificent work in creating another festival for our enjoyment.

J

Reuben Kench Head of Culture & Leisure at Stockton Borough Council

Golden anniversary

oin us in celebrating our 50th Anninversary in 2014. From humble beginnings the Festival has grown to what it is today – an international festival known worldwide as being one of the top festivals to participate in – and a festival that the Billingham people, volunteers and audience should be proud of. Next year we are intending to bring back to our stages, the very best of groups who have attended the Festival throughout the 50

years of existence. We have already had acceptances from Argentina, Cook Islands, Georgia, Russia, North Cyprus, Mexico, Chile, Phillipines and Italian Flag Wavers – as well as a few special birthday surprises. So, hopefully, visas permitting, the next Festival should definitely be one to go down in history. Don’t miss the big celebrations! – The dates of the 50th Billingham International Folklore festival are 9th-16th August 2014.

3D Digital Installation (5-minute film) by Billy Cowie

Tango de Soledad Billingham Town Centre Shop (former Shoe Zone) Saturday 10th Saturday 17th August – 11.00am-4.00pm FREE

10

Billy Cowie has been working on a series of ground-breaking stereoscopic dance installations that bring the projected dancer(s) from the screen into the same space as the viewer. This allows the spectator a close-up and intimate experience of the choreography while maintaining the corporeal presence and physicality of a live performance. “Tango de Soledad” (Tango of Solitude), is a five-minute dance solo choreographed by Billy Cowie and danced by Amy Hollingsworth. It is a life-sized stereoscopic installation. The dance is based around Cowie’s Tango No.3 for Cello and Piano (played by himself and Wei-Tsen Lin) and his poem Tango de Soledad which is recited in Spanish by Clara Garcia Fraile. The piece is performed against specially constructed drawings (by Silke Mansholt) and uses special techniques to give the viewer impression that they are sharing the space with a real life sized solid dancer.

UNITED KINGDOM The Lock In Dance Show THE LOCK IN (Formerly known as Time Gentlemen Please!) Some of the UK’s oldest forms of dance are brought bang up to date as they collide with some of the youngest in an exciting new dance show touring the UK throughout 2012. The show, the brainchild of award-winning folk band The Demon Barbers, sees a group of street dancers arrive at an apparently deserted pub. Local rumour has it that The Fighting Cocks is the place to be ‘after hours’ but as the regulars arrive a clash of cultures turns into a dance floor stand-off. The skill, speed and athleticism of the dancers on both sides soon wins the others over as the old and new are brought together in an exciting and dynamic danceoff. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls. Meanwhile house band The Demon Barbers takes English Folk music on a new journey with friends Hip Hop, House, Funk and Ska and even says hello to Burlesque and Drum & Bass along the way! The unique performance of The Lock In at the Billingham Forum will include guest visitors to the pub from USA, Ukraine and Mexico. 24

UNITED KINGDOM Alma de Tango Alma de Tango, led by Colombian singer Patrissia Cuberos, plays an exotic fiery blend of Tango, flamenco, gypsy and classical music while remaining true to the essence of Tango, accompanied by two tango dance couples. Their show TANGO : A HISTORY OF PASSION is a spectacle combining the beauty of live music and dance with magic of visual technology to convey the passion of Tango. The professional tango dance couples are: Isolde Kanikani – New Zealand and Almar Schouten - Netherlands, Katja Lehmann and Oliver Wielinski – Germany The contrast between the two tango dance couples is aimed to show the audiences that Tango is a language and not a choreographed set of dance moves and therefore the two couples can interpret of the same music in very different ways.
