IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS As an English learner, you can probably identify with the following situation. You attend weekly English courses and use English regularly at work. In your free time you read Englishlanguage material, or occasionally watch movies in the original English-language version. You understand most of the conversations and texts, and can communicate at a reasonable level. Still, somehow you feel like you’re running in place. Perhaps you want to earn a language certificate, are facing a new international assignment, or are just afraid you’ll forever remain stuck at the same language level, maybe B1 on the CEF scale. “How can I really improve my English?” you ask yourself. We took that question to authors and experts in the field of learning and teaching English. Thanks to years of classroom teaching and individual coaching, they can offer practical advice and key strategies that have proven most effective for their students. The truth is, making real progress is difficult and it doesn’t happen overnight. But it can be done. Choosing the strategy that works for you can help you to move forward faster towards your goal of improving your English. Learning a language is rather like trying to lose weight. We have to pay attention to what we take in, do lots of exercises, and keep working at it over time. If we get the chance to take a trip to a country where the language is spoken, it’s a wonderful boost – probably the linguistic equivalent to liposuction. But it doesn’t last without effort.

“You feel like running in a place”

“How can I really improve my English?”

To make and maintain progress, it’s more important to make small changes in daily habits. Pick just one habit to change, and work on it.

Tip: “Make a plan and stay committed. Immersion is very valuable, but the improvement it brings isn’t going to last once you’re back home. To make and maintain progress, it’s important to make changes in your daily habits.” Vicki Hollett, a teacher and an award-winning writer of books for learners of business and technical English

STEP 1: “One change at a time” A lot of communication on the phone is highly predictable. So for outgoing calls, make yourself a “call planner”. Note down the name of the person you want to speak to, the points you want to discuss and the message you’ll leave if he or she is not available. For incoming calls, have a ready-made list of responses to help you handle the sudden rush of English!

It might be getting up half an hour earlier to study, listening to English radio stations in your car, surfing English web-sites in your lunch hour, or watching and English DVD every night. Then tell everyone you know that you’re working on your English. Staying committed is easier if you’ve gone public.

STEP 2: “Plan and prepare”

The direction a meeting may take is harder to predict, but a “meeting planner” can be just as useful. Don’t leave your key points to chance. Write them out in English, and add supporting points you may need. A mind map is a useful tool here. Have you notes in front of you during the meeting. In social situations, try learning “mini-scripts” for common topics of conversation. Prepare sentences that can help you talk about, for example, where you’re from, how business is, or the current economic situation. There’s no need to be word-perfect, but when a subject comes up, you’ll be able to switch to autopilot. As they say, success comes when preparation meets opportunity!

Tip:

“Prepare yourself. You wouldn’t give a presentation without preparing it. Remember that, to some extent, you can also preformulate what you want to say in meetings, on the phone and in social situations. Predicting the areas of language you may be drawn into can really help take the pressure off.” Mark Powell, a business English teacher, teacher trainer and author

The Author of a bestseller

“Twilight”

Stephenie Meyer was born in Connecticut in 1973. Her family moved to the Phoenix area when she was four, and she has lived there every since. She is the second eldest child in a family of six, having two sisters and three brothers. She attended Brigham Young University on a National Merit Scholarship majoring in English, but concentrating on literature rather than creative writing.

“The idea for Twilight came to her in a dream” She has known her husband, Christian – or Pancho as everyone calls him, ever since she was four years old, but didn’t have much of a real relationship with him until she was older. They were married in 1994 and now have three beautiful sons; Gabe, Seth, and Eli. They are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints. Twilight is her first book, but there will be at least two more books in Twilight series. The idea for Twilight came to her in a dream on the night

In the dream, she saw what eventually became Chapter 13 of Twilight. She started writing out the details of the dream, calling her two characters only “he” and “she” as they were unnamed. From that point on she wrote something every day until she was able to fill in the rest of the story. She started editing the book, writing several epilogues to the point where she realized she wasn’t ready to let the characters go and that there was more story to tell. She sent the book out to publishers and was eventually signed to Little, Brown and Company for a three book deal.

“It took about six months for Twilight to become a reality” From dream to deal, it took about six months for Twilight to become a reality. It was in stores a short eighteen months later. Later on, approximately after the release of New Moon, the deal was expanded to four books and Breaking Dawn was added as the final book in Bella and Edward’s story. Stephenie has also published a short story in the anthology, Prom Nights From Hell and the scifi novel, The Host. On November 21, 2008, the movie version of Twilight was released. New Moon is slated to be released November 20, 2009. The release date of Eclipse will be released on June 30 2010. Plans for Breaking Dawn have not yet been revealed.

TWILIGHT...SOFTLY IN THE AIR... "Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ''Be very still,'' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat. As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love .But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. That was the year I finally put my foot down; these past three summers, my dad, Charlie, vacaI'd never given much thought to how I would die tioned with me in California for two weeks instead. — though I'd had reason enough in the last few “Surely it was a good way to die, in months — but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this. But, terrified as I was, I couldn't bring loving, erratic, harebrained myself to regret the decision. When life offers you a mother to fend for herself? It was from this town and its gloomy, omnipresent shade that my mother escaped with me when I was only a few months old. It was in this town that I'd been compelled to spend a month every summer until I was fourteen.

BigChilli Bed-time Stories

It's a four-hour flight from Phoenix to Seattle, another hour in a small plane up to Port Angeles, and then an hour drive back down to Forks. Flying doesn't bother me; the hour in the car with Charlie, though, I was a little worried about. Charlie had really been fairly nice about the whole thing. He seemed genuinely pleased that I was coming to live with him for the first time with any degree of permanence. He'd already gotten me registered for high school and was going to help me get a car. But it was sure to be awkward with Charlie. Neither of us was what anyone would call verbose, and I didn't know what there was to say regardless. I knew he was more than a little confused by my decision — like my mother before me, I hadn't made a secret of my distaste for Forks. When I landed in Port Angeles, it was raining. I didn't see it as an omen — just unavoidable. I'd already said my goodbyes to the sun. Charlie was waiting for me with the cruiser. This I was expecting, too. Charlie is Police Chief Swan to the good people of Forks. My primary motivation behind buying a car, despite the scarcity of my funds, was that I refused to be driven around town in a car with red and blue lights on top. Nothing slows down traffic like a cop. Charlie gave me an awkward, one-armed hug when I stumbled my way off the plane. "It's good to see you, Bells," he said, smiling as he automatically caught and steadied me. "You haven't changed much. How's Renée?" "Mom's fine. It's good to see you, too, Dad." I wasn't allowed to call him Charlie to his face. I had only a few bags. Most of my Arizona clothes were too permeable for Washington. My mom and I had pooled our resources to supplement my winter wardrobe, but it was still scanty. It all fit easily into the trunk of the cruiser. "I found a good car for you, really cheap," he announced when we were strapped in. "What kind of car?" I was suspicious of the way he said "good car for you" as opposed to just "good car."

"Well, it's a truck actually, a Chevy." "Where did you find it?" "Do you remember Billy Black down at La Push?" La Push is the tiny Indian reservation on the coast. "No." "He used to go fishing with us during the summer," Charlie prompted. That would explain why I didn't remember him. I do a good job of blocking painful, unnecessary things from my memory. "He's in a wheelchair now," Charlie continued when I didn't respond, "so he can't drive anymore, and he offered to sell me his truck cheap." "What year is it?" I could see from his change of expression that this was the question he was hoping I wouldn't ask. "Well, Billy's done a lot of work on the engine — it's only a few years old, really." I hoped he didn't think so little of me as to believe I would give up that easily. "When did he buy it?" "He bought it in 1984, I think." "Did he buy it new?" "Well, no. I think it was new in the early sixties — or late fifties at the earliest," he admitted sheepishly. "Ch — Dad, I don't really know anything about cars. I wouldn't be able to fix it if anything went wrong, and I couldn't afford a mechanic…" "Really, Bella, the thing runs great. They don't build them like that anymore." The thing, I thought to myself… it had possibilities — as a nickname, at the very least. "How cheap is cheap?" After all, that was the part I couldn't compromise on. "Well, honey, I kind of already bought it for you. As a homecoming gift." Charlie peeked sideways at me with a hopeful expression. Wow. Free. "You didn't need to do that, Dad. I was going to buy myself a car." "I don't mind. I want you to be happy here." He was looking ahead at the road when he said this. (to be continued…)

I’ll also show you a sweet dream next night...

Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy, Sr. (September 6, 1888 – November 18, 1969) was a prominent American businessman and political figure, and the father of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and United States Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward Kennedy. He was a leading member of the Democratic Party and of the Irish Catholic community. He was the inaugural Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later directed the Maritime Commission. Kennedy served as the United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1938 till late 1940, including the early part of World War II. David Kennedy, author of Freedom From Fear, describes the Wall Street of the Kennedy era: “(It) was a strikingly information-starved environment. Many firms whose securities were publicly traded published no regular reports or issued reports whose data were so arbitrarily selected and capriciously audited as to be worse than useless. It was this circumstance that had conferred such awesome power on a handful of investment bankers like J.P. Morgan, because they commanded a virtual monopoly of the information necessary for making sound financial decisions. Especially in the secondary markets, where reliable information was all but impossible for the average investor to come by, opportunities abounded for insider manipulation and wildcat speculation. Kennedy told reporter Joe Dinneen: “It is true that I have a low opinion of some Jews in public office and in private life. That does not mean that I... believe they should be wiped off the face of the earth... Jews who take an unfair advantage of the fact that theirs is a persecuted race do not help much... Publicizing unjust attacks upon the Jews may help to cure the injustice, but continually publicizing the whole problem only serves to keep it alive in the public mind.”

Jean Paul Getty (December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976) was an American industrialist who lived his last 24 years in the United Kingdom. He founded the Getty Oil Company, and in 1957 Fortune magazine named him the richest living American. At his death, he was worth more than $2 billion. A book published in 1996 ranked him as the 67th richest American who ever lived, based on his wealth as a percentage of the gross national product. Getty was an avid collector of art and antiquities; his collection formed the basis of the J. “Pyunsoo”... A cake made of meat dumplings at the exhibition «Food. Prodmash. Agro» In the exhibition center «Siberia» there was a Festival «Siberian pelmen-2009». This year the producers of the popular Siberian dish will create a real cake of meat dumplings of diameters more than two meters. The companies “Torgovy Dom” Sibirskie pelmeni» Ltd. and «Lineok plyus» Ltd. will fight for the rank of the most original manufacturer of unusual festive cake. Works of cooks-sculptors will be estimated by the cooks of restaurants of Krasnoyarsk city. A professional judge will evaluate taste of meat dumplings that are used for making compositions, and also aesthetic and semantic dignities of sculptures. Within the framework of the festival the special nomination is selected «Choice of people», where the visitors of the exhibition will be able to choose a producer of the best and high-quality commodity.

A Monument to … meat dumpling Izhevsk town. A meat dumpling monument Aspiration of a part of Udmurtia’s intellectual people to tie the «image» of meat dumplings to Udmurtia is based on the fact that etymology of the Russian word pelmen obviously ascends to Permian languages: both in komi and in the Udmurt languages the pel means ‘ear’, and nan – ‘(baked) bread’. The further chain of arguments is simple: if meat dumplings are an Udmurt word, so, they were created by Udmurts, and if Udmurts live in Udmurtia, Udmurtia is the motherland of meat dumplings, then. The matter that the word pelmeni is successfully explained from the material of komi language, too, local enthusiasts usually prefer not to remember as, at that rate, it becomes incomprehensible why just Udmurtia must be declared the «motherland of meat dumplings».

“One of cultural technologies when working in regions is branding” Indeed, they were komi, who had been Christianized early, firmly and, not without a benefit for them, integrated in Russian social life of peasants, hunters, merchants, reindeer breeders, they had extraordinarily actively acted on the Russian North (they were even called «jewries of Russian North» because of it) and beyond Ural, they were the ones who had all historical possibilities to pass the Russians the term for designation of cookery items of such characteristic big-ears-appearance, while probability of origin of this word from much more passive, long time living by the reserved heathen community Udmurts, that entered the complement of Russia lately is far below.

China is considered to be the real motherland of meat dumplings for some good reasons, where similar dishes – hun-dun, or wonton, in English pronunciation, are still extraordinarily popular. All this, however, does not interfere with advancement of «meat-dumplings-mythology» (as one Izhevsk journalist cleverly said) in the masses. Honour to be the main «pelmenizator» of Izhevsk belongs now to muscovite (he used to be Izhevsk citizen before) Alexej Shklyaev; he is an artist by education, who makes a living by advancement of various cultural projects. «A meat dumpling monument» became one of such projects, essence of which the author expounded maximum simply: «One of cultural technologies when working in regions is branding.” There is a town Myshkin, in which all industry of tourism is strung on the image of a mouse. For Udmurtia the brand «Udmurtia is the motherland of meat dumplings» is offered... Urban space is saturated with images of meat dumplings: sculptures, monuments, padded stools in clubs and apartments, tourist attributes – T-shirts, badges».

It was supposed that the urban space would be «saturated» with the monuments of two kinds: in the form of a meat dumpling pressed “ There is a town Myshkin, in which all industry of tourism is strung on the image of a mouse. For Udmurtia the brand «Udmurtia is the motherland of meat dumplings» is offered…” on a fork, and in the form of a meat dumpling, lying on the ground, but these plans were realized only partly. The town administration approved the first and it is the last for now a meat dumpling monument which, on “ A new monument was set in the center of Izhevsk: reinforce-concrete meat dumpling on a three-meter-high fork.”

October 28, 2004, has adorned by itself environs of the popular in Izhevsk restaurant «Pozim'», located in the quiet and remote from the city center Kraev street.

! ! y a l p s Let’ Where does a course “pelmeni” come from? Is it really a traditional Ukrainian meal? Send your ideas to game@chili.net.ua! Deadline is 01.12.2009

This is how it was reported in those days: «A new monument was set in the center of Izhevsk: reinforce-concrete meat dumpling on a three-meter-high fork. As a broadcasting company NTV reports, Russia has not had such things yet... Authorities of Izhevsk are planning to ennoble the monument a bit in the future: to overgild the fork, and to cut out the meat dumpling from marble». Mentioning gilt and other improvements set aside on a prospect is, presumably, to be attributed to original journalistic humour, it is although impossible to hide that the monument looks not too solidly, indeed: hollow tin fork that towers over the flowerbed that is studded with cigarette-ends and beer corks and grey concrete meat dumpling bring some workaday, «Soviet» tunes on. Anyway, the author of these lines, having seeing a meat dumpling monument for the first time, felt, frankly spealing, disappointed as that bright symbolic image that was drawn in local mass-media and internet-associations, as it turned out, had not too much in common with reality. Maybe, the real monument in the Kraev street will remain a not very much successful adding to virtual image of a meat dumpling of Izhevsk. But if to consider original appearance of the monument and the original impressions received from gazing at it as monumental expression of specific of environment of the Izhevsk creative people and on the whole local intellectual persons, then it will be necessary to acknowledge that the monument succeeded.

«FURIOUS KARATE» WITH A VISOR

«Furious karate» with a visor

«Great way» Kudo Daido Juku is a new direction of martial arts, created in 1981 by a master of martial arts Adzuma Takashi (7th dan).

«The best of the best» In 1981 Japanese master of martial arts Adzuma Takashi (7th dan) opened the way which is followed by thousands of his students till today. He’s created the style which has surpassed all existing martial arts in the Land of the Rising Sun and in the whole world as for realisticness and efficiency. His plan was simple as all genius: for the past ages people have created enormous amount of methods to defend oneself without a weapon. And it is possible to create a style of the future combining the most effective techniques from different types of combats.

Therefore Adzuma Takashi named his school - "School of Great Way" - Daido Dzhuku.

PERFECT MARTIAL ART

Daido-Dzhuku is translated from Japanese as "Art of Great Way" ("Dai" is for great, "Do" is a way, "Dzhuku" is an art). The extended translation of the concept means approximately the following: "There is not a gate that leads you directly to the Great Way. Everybody must build it in his heart and go to perfection in his own way." In other words, there is a great great number of methods to achieve perfection.

Ready? Steady? Go! In Japan this direction has quickly become enormously popular, getting the name "Furious karate due to the richest arsenal of contact techniques. The style combines techniques of karate, wrestling and boxing in it; any blows by hands, feet, including elbows and knees in any part of body, except for the back and back of

Dzhuku are one or two times less than in those so-called noncontact martial arts, where an accidental kick usually hits an unprotected area and inflicts serious damage. Motherland of Daido-dzhuku, Japan is a country of centuries-old traditions and rules of conduct that are frequently incomprehensible for Europeans. It is accepted to consider there that any influence from outside can turn to be ruinous for the Japanese culture. Therefore the most eastern part of the land had been closed for others for quite a long time, so to say by the self-sufficient country. And for the same reason the founder of the style, Adzuma Takashi, a strict adherent of Japanese traditions, had opposed distribution of Daido-Dzhuku

head are allowed. Direct blows in a joint and head of a lying competitor are also forbidden. Expressly developed rules and their rigid adherence by judges at competitions, and also the special mood of fighters, all these allow to avoid traumatism almost fully. To-stare-at-blood-on-tatami-lovers will be cruelly disappointed.

Beside and above fighters use protective equipment. Face and the most vulnerable zones of head are covered with a specially developed in Japan helmet supersave with a plastic visor. According to statistics, heavy traumas in Daido

westward for long thirteen years, although all his colleagues long time ago had already, to put it in the words of our great king, "cut through a window to Europe". Only in 1994 Sensei decided to extend the scopes of the style, and the first countries, where he met warm welcoming, were Russia, Ukraine, USA, Australia, India, Brazil, Chile and Iran. Adzuma Takashi’s official representative in Ukraine is Branchief of Ukraine, Samokhin I.V. (4th dan). Official representative In Kiev is the Presinent of Kiev Federation of Kudo, Korzh A.V. (2nd dan). For the past four years the amount of engaged in this style in one Ukraine only has grown more than tenfold. Therefore, it is boldly possible to say that the Great Way already passes all over Ukraine.

ART OR SPORT ? ART OR SPORT ? Martial arts created in the Orient, mostly for self-defence, have never been put on the same footing as the concept "sport". It is not then that a competition moment absented quite in them, but aspiration to win at a tournament was not an end in itself. Other business is a fight. Fighters practise not for the sake of victory at competitions, but in the name of victory over themselves. Not for the sake of a higher stage on the pedestal of honour, but in order to achieve a higher step on the way to perfection, to attain which, as it is generally known, is impossible. Now competitions in karate are acquiring more and more sport nature. Still it is an art, but not a kind of sport yet.

Just life

is more real...

Great Way Therefore, in Japan, they are not the winners, who are so much celebrated, but those, who have attached more forces and wills for achieving result, even though they did not win. In other words, the adherents of Daidodzyuku proclaimed the name of the style (its «extended interpretation») an original motto, a «general line». The adherents of Daidodzyuku also say: «Achievement in some sort of art implies the presence of secret sense and secret

tradition. In some dodzyos there is something which is «closed» and so-called «gates», to «enter» which means to pass-out.

Another (propagandist on the essence) step is proclamation of the idea «Only life is more real!». Indeed, the rules of competitions on Daidodzyuku differ from the rules of many other contact martial arts with pretty wide spectrum of the actions allowed. However, let us go back to the sources of the direction.

Adzuma Takashi in attack The founder of Daidodzyuku was born on May 22, 1949. He graduated from the institute of Vaseda. In 1971 he began practising Kyokushinkai karate under the leadership of Oyama Masutatsu. In 1976, when he was 26 years ago, at the I World Cup on Kyokushinkai he became the sixth in the general list of leaders. A year later he won All-Japanese championship in Kyokushin. In 1979 he became only the fourth. However, it is common knowledge that competition at world championships on Kyokushin is so high, that just a hit in the top five means very much great deal for a sportsman. So for Adzuma this success was highly meaningful. Later, he

"There is no gate, leading to Great Way. Everybody must build it in his heart, and go to perfection in own way".

The plural branches of these schools present different interpretations of different doctrines. «At the school of Daidodzyuku, - Adzuma sensei says, - there is neither «closed» nor «gates». A great way does not have a gate – here is the philosophical sense of Daidodzyuku. There is not a secret sense in Daido. To get a clear idea of it, it is necessary to hold your spirit on the veritable way»» (Cite on Valery Osokin, «Battle karate. Stages of the great way». Vladivostok).

abandoned Kyokushinkai «big family». Reasons were the most prosaic, of course.

Fighting To Belong In fact, this man has not found his place (that he considered he deserved) in the pretty strict general system. In 1981 Adzuma Takashi declared creation of a new direction of karate.

Very often the adherents of Daidodzyuku declare that the style «combines in itself techniques of karate, wrestling and boxing» but, in fact, it is just a next attempt to show that this direction concerns to the sort of so-called «universal» or «mixed» martial arts. Of course, there are throws and wrestling in karate, and boxing in its present state is far from the ideals of competitions in Daidodzyuku. It is rather possible to say that the technique and methods of this direction have passed through a multiple tests by combats with the representatives of different types of sport martial arts, and a new, original, in its own way, type of martial art was formed. Lowkick of a master is able to prang even enormously thick layer of ice!

On the world arena It is possible, of course, to argue about how much Daidodzyuku is «competitive» in the modern overcrowded world of military arts and sport martial arts, however fast-growing popularity of this kind is obvious and indisputable. After a few years, having won popularity among Japanese audience, it went out outside the Country of the Rising Sun, and burst into the world of martial arts of America and Europe. Adzuma himself, being an expatriate from Kyokushinkai, and watching successes and failures of his colleagues (to take, for example, another Oyama’s student, Soeno Eshidzi, who created «Shidokan», or Ishii Kadzuyoshi, Ashikhara Khideyuki’s student, who organized competitions on K-1), he formulated clearly the basic ideas of the direction, «prescribed» ideals and direction of motion. But we’ll tell about it a bit later. Let us look at the features of a combat in Daidodzyuku first. To say that «Furious karate» (Daidodzyuku was called so by journalists and adherents of the direction, it is rather possible to consider as a publicity trick than an independent estimation) is much better than other types of sport martial arts, is incorrect and wrong.

Let’s come back to the «unicity» of Daidodzyuku. General situation of competitions in Daidodzyuku demonstrates obvious differences from Kyokushinkai, Shidokan, and K-1. Last two kinds are professional or near to professional. Kyokushinkai and Daidodzyuku are formally amateur types of martial art that allows to attract the masses of people to gyms, and competitions are quite accessible. At the same time, spectacle, simplicity of rules allowed Daidodzyuku to do a jerk forward and to become one of popular types of sport martial arts. And here the secret of sportsmen’s mastery is covered in, the adherents of Daidodzyuku repeat over and over again in one voice. It is fully obvious that mass character brings to the hard competition. The best fighters come to fight due to a competition.

Reason To Exist Rivalry «urges» all participants forward and sportsmen begin to practice more and more actively. The popular system of competitions allows to attract facilities (sponsor, audience), and it allows to do certain financial investments in sportsmen. And sportsmen gravitate to Kudo as to professional activity. On the whole, it is possible to say that Adzuma and his followers have created the slender system, which includes not only a sport side (very competitions on Daidodzyuku), but also the system of ideology and «propaganda», informative support. We want to mention that Adzuma’s organization has obtained reporting from competitions on Daidodzyuku to be regularly transmited on the national TV channels, which is very difficult to obtain.

Adzuma’s record It is impossible not to mention about records on breaking hard objects, set by Adzuma. He breaks 12 blocks of ice, put as a pile with a single blow of arm, each of which is 15 cm thick. In 1995 this record of tameshiwari was fixed by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Daidodzyuku in the world The style began to develop really dynamically and has become widespread in different countries of the world. It is important to note that the first foreign representative office of the Japanese honbu appeared in Russian Vladivostok in 1993. «Kakuto Karate International Federation» was expanding and developing. Other countries entered Adzuma’s organization very soon after that. Daidodzyuku is developing in Japan, Russia, Holland, Australia, Chile, Ukraine and other countries actively.

7 tips

#1

to totally

blow a job interview As a public service, I’m sharing a few thoughts here on what NOT to do if you are interviewing for a position: #1 Don’t follow the instructions for submitting your resume. If they ask you to email it, fax it instead. If they ask you to send it by postal mail, it’s easier just to email it, right? Hiring managers love to hire people who can’t follow simple directions. #2 Before the interview, don’t do ANY research on the company you are hoping to work for. It’s really better if you have no idea what the company does, or who is behind it. That way, you won’t have any preconceived ideas about how you might add value to the organization #3 During the interview, be sure to cut the interviewer off and start answering before he/she finishes a question. You are sure to give a 100% answer with only 50% of the question. #4 When discussing salary, please go on and on about how much value you added to your last company just before you were LAID OFF. #5 Don’t dress up. All offices are casual these days, right? So set the proper attire expectations by wearing jeans and a t-shirt to your interview. #6 Make yourself invisible by avoiding business social networking sites like LinkedIn. And under NO circumstances should you have any references or testimonials about your work. The less a hiring manager can find out about you, the more likely they are to hire you, right? #7 After the interview, don’t clutter up the interviewers mail box with a thank you note. This would really set you apart from the crowd…and nobody likes a show-off. Bonus tip: Don’t show up for your interview at all. (This just happened to me this morning. It really made my day)

BUSINESS INTERVIEW 1. You are preparing for an interview, but you don't imagine what questions you should answer. Read the information provided by Mr. McDermott who usually interviews job applicants in the famous trade company. Mr. McDermott: An interview is an important event in the life of every job applicant. It can be the last test on the way to a new position. That's why it's very important to be well prepared for an interview. Come in time to the appointed place for an interview. Don't forget to take all the necessary documents for your better presentation (references, characteristics, diplomas). Don't be nervous and tense with the interviewer, be polite and listen attentively to all the questions you are asked. If you are confident in what you are talking about it will make a good impression on the interviewer. Try to give full and clear answers to the questions. Be ready to discuss the details of your future work. Try to persuade the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the chosen position and an asset for the company. Don't talk about personal questions if they are not connected with the future work. Don't hesitate to describe fully your responsibilities and regular duties at the previous job if you are asked. Show that you are thinking ahead in your career development. Be ready to explain the reasons of your desire to change the work. Tell about your educational history and obtained degree. Don't forget to mention your computer skills, language fluency if it's required by the company. At the end of the interview thank the interviewer for his/her attention. Don't demand the immediate answer about his/her decision, appoint the certain date for it.

Get a new job easily! 2. Words necessary for understanding what your future employee wanna get from you. get an interview – иметь интервью (собеседование) reference – отзыв; рекомендации present a list of references – предоставить список отзывов tense – напряженный polite - вежливый be confident – быть уверенным persuade - убеждать regular duties – обычные обязанности colleague – коллега be an asset for the company – быть приобретением для компании give a good representation –хорошо представить demand – требовать appoint the date – назначить дату 3. You are strong, independent… Take control of your life!

Your life is going pretty well. But when you think deeply about it, you feel that everyday ROUTINE is getting the better of you. Or, just the reverse, your business is going very-very badly but you don’t know what to start with, HOW TO GET DOWN to elimination of different causes of your dissatisfaction with your life. THIS DIARY WILL COME TO THE AID of you in both cases. It was worked out and prepared by French psychologist Isabelle Filliozat, who has been thinking, for a long time, of matters thanks to which we could FEEL OURSELVES BETTER in our everyday life. The task of these exercises is to help to start the inner PROCESS OF REGENERATION.

To open up anew your lost ability to wonder and, finally, to gain your second wind. Aiming this, we will offer you ONE TASK IN EVERY ISSUE … and blank pages where you can write down your impressions and feelings. These small exercises make it possible to become more conscious of one’s own body, to cease to go into one’s shell, to learn how to delight oneself… But remember that it is not enough just to read these exercises to receive evidence that they are effective. They are to be DONE REALLY! To encourage oneself with beginning this, we offer you to start from the beginning, we mean to conclude a TREATY WITH ONESELF honestly. Why? Because all of us have a habit basically act when we feel ourselves bound with an obligation. Choose your favorite pen to MAKE NOTES in this diary EVERY DAY. Using a thing, which is dear to you, you accentuate the IMPORTANCE YOU ATTACH TO YOU and to these moments in solitude. Having seen this pen on the desk, you will immediately remember that it is the time to do YOUR NEXT TASK. So, take the pen and tick your decision: I get down to business seriously and I will definitely keep the tasks fulfilled. I know myself and promise to do at least half of these. Let’s see, I’ll do these tasks when I want to. I think these exercises are quite stupid… but, maybe, I’ll get back to them one day and think once more. Now, when the decision is made, you understand much clearer what your position is and how strong your desire for changes is. This is a very good beginning, indeed. Bon voyage… in your own pleasant company!

TASK ONE I lay a small bet with myself. I invite for dinner a person I quail before. The first step is the most difficult but we are always the winners, when make a step forward the others. We are a bit afraid as long as we don’t know them. Deflect your attention away from the thought of being rejected, from anxiety you may fall short of the occasion, and concentrate your attention upon the person you invite. Talk about his\her life, show your interest in it… But don’t forget to tell about yourself either. Welcome to Japan, to Japanese Festival — ”Obon”.

Bon Festival Obon (

) or just Bon ( ) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of

one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. Also called the Feast of Lanterns, it has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori. The festival of Obon lasts for three days; however its starting date varies within different regions of Japan. When the lunar calendar was changed to the Gregorian calendar at the beginning of the Meiji era, the localities in Japan reacted differently and this resulted in three different times of Obon. "Shichigatsu Bon" (Bon in July) is based on the solar calendar and is celebrated around 15 July in areas such as Tokyo, Yokohama and the Tohoku region. "Hachigatsu Bon" (Bon in August) is based on the solar calendar, is celebrated around the 15th of August and is the most commonly celebrated time. "Kyu Bon" (Old Bon) is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and so differs each year. "Kyu Bon" is celebrated in areas like the northern part of the KantĹ? region, ChĹŤgoku, Shikoku, and the Southwestern islands. These three days are not listed as public holidays but it is customary that people are given leave. Obon shares some similarities with the predominantly Mexican observance of el DĂa de los Muertos, such as customs involving family reunion and care of ancestors' grave sites.

,

Obon is a shortened form of Ullambana (Japanese: or

urabon'e). It is Sanskrit for

"hanging upside down" and implies great suffering. The Japanese believe they should ameliorate the suffering of the "Urabanna". Bon Odori originates from the story of Mokuren, a disciple of the Buddha, who used his supernatural powers to look upon his deceased mother. He discovered she had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts and was suffering. Greatly disturbed, he went to the Buddha and asked how he could release his mother from this realm. Buddha instructed him to make offerings to the many Buddhist monks who had just completed their summer retreat, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The disciple did this and, thus, saw his mother's release. He also began to see the true nature of her past unselfishness and the many sacrifices that she had made for him. The disciple, happy because of his mother's release and grateful for his mother's kindness, danced with joy. From this dance of joy comes Bon Odori or "Bon Dance", a time in which ancestors and their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated.

As Obon occurs in the heat of the summer, participants traditionally wear yukata, or light cotton kimonos. Many Obon celebrations include a huge carnival with rides, games, and summer festival food like watermelon. The festival ends with Toro Nagashi , or the floating of lanterns. Paper lanterns are illuminated and then floated down rivers symbolically signaling the ancestral spirits' return to the world of the dead. This ceremony usually culminates in a fireworks display. Bon Odori (

, meaning simply Bon dance) is an

event held during Obon. It is celebrated as a reminder of the gratefulness one should feel toward one's ancestors. Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to express the effusive welcome for the spirits of the dead, the style of celebration varies in many aspects from region to region. Each region has a respective local Bon dance, as well as different music accompanying the dance. The music can be songs specifically pertinent to the spiritual message of Obon, or local min'yo folk songs. Consequently, the Bon dance will look and sound different from region to region. HokkaidĹ?, or northern Japan, is known for a folk-song known as "Soran Bushi." The song "Tokyo Ondo" takes its name sake from the capital of Japan. "Goshu Ondo" is a folk song from Shiga prefecture. Residents of the Kansai area will recognize the famous "Kawachi ondo." Tokushima in Shikoku is very famous for its "Awa Odori," or "fool's dance," and in the far south, one can hear the "Ohara Bushi" of Kagoshima. The way in which the dance is performed is also different in each region, though the typical Bon dance involves people lining up in a circle around a high wooden scaffold made especially for the festival called a 'yagura'. The yagura is usually also the bandstand for the musicians and singers of the Obon music. Some dances proceed clockwise, and some dances proceed counter-clockwise around the yagura. Some dances reverse during the dance, though most do not. At times, people face the yagura and move towards and away from it. Still some dances, such as the Kagoshima Ohara dance, and the Tokushima Awa Odori, simply proceed in a straight line through the streets of the town.

The dance of a region can depict the area's history and specialization. For example, the movements of the dance of the Tankō Bushi (the "coal mining song") of old Miike Mine in Kyūshū show the movements of miners, i.e. digging, cart pushing, lantern hanging, etc. All dancers perform the same dance sequence in unison. There are other ways in which a regional Bon dance can vary. Some dances involve the use of different kinds of fans, others involve the use of small towels called tenugui which may have colorful designs. Some require the use of small wooden clappers, or "kachi-kachi" during the dance. The "Hanagasa Odori" of Yamagata is performed with a straw hat that has been decorated with flowers. The music that is played during the Bon dance is not limited to Obon music and min'yo; some modern enka hits and kids' tunes written to the beat of the "ondo" are also used to dance to during Obon season. The "Pokémon Ondo" was used as one of the ending theme songs for the anime series in Japan. The Bon dance tradition is said to have started in the later years of the Muromachi period as a public entertainment. In the course of time, the original religious meaning has faded, and the dance has become associated with summer.

), is held in the seventh month of the Chinese

The Chinese version of O-Bon, the Ghost Festival (

calendar instead of July, though it usually falls in late July or early August. Unlike its Japanese counterpart, the festival is more religious and somber in nature rather than celebratory. In Malaysia, Bon Odori Festivals are also celebrated every year in Penang and at the Matsushita Corp Stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor. In comparison to the celebrations in Japan, the festival is celebrated on a much smaller scale in Penang and Selangor, and is less associated with Buddhism and more with Japanese culture. Held mainly to expose locals to a part of Japanese culture, the festival provides the experience of a variety of Japanese food & drinks, art and dance.

United States and Canada The "Bon season" is an important part of the present-day culture and life of Hawaii. Bon Odori festivals are also celebrated in North America, particularly by Japanese-Americans or JapaneseCanadians affiliated with Buddhist temples and organizations. Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) temples in the U.S. typically celebrate Bon Odori with both religious Obon observances and traditional Bon Odori dancing around a yagura. Many temples also concurrently hold a cultural and food bazaar providing a variety of cuisine and art, also to display features of Japanese culture and JapaneseAmerican history. Performances of taiko by both amateur and professional groups have recently become a popular feature of Bon Odori festivals. Bon Odori festivals are usually scheduled anytime between July and September. Bon Odori melodies are also similar to those in Japan; for example, the dance Tankō Bushi from Kyūshū is also performed in the U.S. In California, due to the diffusion of Japanese immigration, Bon Odori dances also differ from Northern to Southern California, and some are influenced by American culture, such as "Baseball Ondo".
