Welcome Cattlemen and women . . . . .
Hello and welcome to the eighteenth edition of Lockhart Valley Simmentals Bull Sale. Every year I mull over and wonder what to say in the sale welcome. It can be almost impossible to come up with something new that you all haven’t read before. So, after many minutes, hours and perhaps days, I’m going to stick with the old boring welcome.
On behalf of everyone in the sale, we entrust each and everyone of you had a great spring and summer. Hopefully everyone got the rain and heat at the right time. I know we had our struggles in the spring but as a whole, the year was overall a success. Commodity prices and the cattle markets soared this year, especially in the fall. Calf prices were phenomenal, with some calves bringing over $2,000 per calf. With all the dispersals this past fall, I can foresee a very, very strong calf market this upcoming sale season. With that thought in mind, those of you astute cattlemen I’m sure will be looking to increase your weaning weights. And what better way than to use a Simmental bull. All three families involved in the sale concentrate on
selling high quality bulls with longevity built in. We also concentrate on selling our bulls to the commercial men & women in our industry. A good percentage of the bulls get sold to repeat buyers, who’s calves are a very, sought after commodity. Bulls are all weaned within a week of one another, so all the bulls are on an equal footing when penned together. Our feed ration ensures that the bulls will hopefully breed for their new owner for years to come. We still feed a TMR ration, although Lee has changed it slightly. Instead of bull pellets we have a ration made up of oats, corn & beet pulp. That is combined with silage and second cut hay. The bulls have done amazing on the new ration as you’ll see for yourselves. I’d encourage anyone interested in the bulls to come to the farm and walk amongst them. We don’t mind answering any questions you may have. So, with that in mind, mark on your calendar, Saturday March 4th 2023, 1 o’clock at Lockhart Valley Simmentals farm for some good food, good company and good bulls.
Thank you from, Lockhart Valley Simmentals, Cow Boss Simmentals & Silvertop Simmentals

As I mentioned in the sale welcome, 2022 started off rough. Our family had just come off of fighting Covid and as a farm we didn’t know where we would end up. Now that a year has went by, I’d like to give a huge thank you to all the people who phoned and wanted to help Hannah and I when Lee was in the hospital. Danny Hofer, Melvin and Mike Dolman, Chad Beagle and Ed Bajema, thank you so, so much. If I’ve forgotten anyone I apologize. A huge thanks to Terry Balazi, who helped us process the cows and Kevin and Levi Marcinek, who helped us process the bulls. We needed help and you three men were so amazing to step up and be there for us. Hannah and I can’t thank those three people enough. This year started hard but got much better as the year progressed. We ended up selling our steer calves for well over $2000.00 per animal.
Grain prices have held high and steady. Those prices can only mean good things for those who persevere in these unsettled times. This year in the footnotes I’m going to concentrate on the cow behind the bull.
As I stated in the welcome, Lee has changed the ration slightly. Second cut hay, silage and the oat ration make up their feed. The bulls are bedded every second day and every day if it snows. They are still housed in a large pen with lots of room.
We cull hard for temperament and have shipped three of our top bulls because of it. We don’t want anyone to be fearful and hurt by a bull we know has an issue. If we know a bull might have a hard time with handling, I’ll let you know in his footnotes.
With all that said we’d like to invite you to stop by the farm and walk through the bull pens. The bulls are conveniently sorted into reds, blacks and full bloods to make it easier to view them.
Please make a note of the date of our sale on your calendar. We hope you can attend and look forward to seeing you.
Thanks

Korbin is our feature lot this year. All three of us think highly of this young bull. From his hair coat, color and structure. He is as close to the quality of LHVS Charles as you can get…that’s impressive considering what Charles has done. His dam is a sweetie. We call her little mouse, although she is not by any means small anymore. LHVS 47E has lots of volume and is ¾ sibling to Charles. We’ve registered every calf out of her. Korbin is going to be a big boy when he’s done growing and will make attractive females and very marketable bull calves. We feel this young stud has a place in the purebred industry. Korbin is a bull that will do best in an environment that knows how to handle him. Mouse did an awesome job on Korbin and it shows in the percentage of her body weight she weaned with him. An impressive 60%.
For whatever reason we missed testing him for the Diluter gene and can’t guarantee he’ll be Diluter free.

Killian is Hannah’s bull and from an Anchor “T” Metro cow she bought from Maxwell Simmentals. Hannah has registered 5/6 calves from 584C. Coincidentally, 584’s name is Hannah. So Hannah or “Glenda” is a dark liver red cow and is super gentle. Killian is dark, dark red and has unique markings on his face, with a huge wrap around goggle. He’s thick and reminds me of his sire SBV 711F. Hannah did an impressive job with Killian, weaning off 58% of her body weight. Last year 584C’s bull calf went to a good friend and neighbour, Elmerine Yarbrough, from Rimbey.

Kamden is a sweetheart and really enjoys his scratches. His dam 19B is a favorite cow around here. We’ve registered every calf from her except her first one. All her heifers are in the herd and are producing. Two of her daughters have bulls in this sale. Last years bull calf went to Dwayne Patterson, a long-time customer. Kamden is his full brother. 19B is a small-framed, lighter brown colored cow with tons of volume. She is a sweetheart and is a joy to work with. Her track record speaks for itself and Kamden is no exception. He weaned off at 56% of 19B’s body weight.
Kamden is a cow bull and is Diluter Free.
is sired by Charles and her dam is a really good polled cow whom we’ve registered 6 calves from. Sassy is polled and dark red with loads of pigment on her face and legs. Keanu is a cow bull and weaned off his dam at 910lbs which translates into 63% of her body weight. Unfortunately we did not test Keanu to see if he’s Diluter free.

Okay, here we go. Let’s talk about Karsyn’s mom. What a beauty of a female. Her first calf, a bull, was purchased by Tara Rudkiwsky of Two Hills. Her second calf a Charles daughter just had her first calf, an Anchor D Hefner bull calf. Pictured on this page is a photo of LHVS 11J’s udder. 8F’s a really nice Crossroad Radium daughter. Moderate framed, dark red, beautifully pigmented, great udder and feet. Karsyn’s dam is the type of cow we strive to produce, fault free, highly productive and long lived. We have high hopes for this young matriarch. 8F weaned 58% of her body weight. Karsyn is blood red and is going to be a big boy. He should produce beautiful females and if he wasn’t so closely related to our herd, we’d use him in our A.I program.

Kade is Hannah’s bull and he is fancy, fancy, fancy. He traces back to one of Hannah’s original cows, Spruces Potion 412B or “Tracy” as she is named. Tracy has been a fantastic cow for Hannah with having 5 out of 6 calves registered. Her daughters are phenomenal and she stamps them all with a beautiful feet and udders. Kade is cherry red with big goggles. His sire is a new bull for us, Nac Battle Cry. We A.I’d 10 heifers to him and got 9 calves. He colored them all the same, dark cherry red, big goggles and a fantastic, easy going temperament. Kade’s dam is a dark red Charles daughter who did a whale of a job her first time out of the gate, weaning 61% of her body weight.
Kade will calve easy and we recommend he be used on cows. Kade is Diluter Free, meaning he won’t throw greys on black cows.

Karter wouldn’t even exist if Hannah and I hadn’t fought to keep his dam. I know Lee’s reasoning to cull her, he thought she was too small. BUT, did she ever prove him wrong. LHVS 29H weaned Karter off at 73% of her body weight. So, so impressive for her first time. 29H’s dam is a cow we bought as a bred heifer from Spruceview Acres from Camrose. Becca Jane has been good for us.
Even though 29H is a smaller framed cow, we have high expectations for her. She is blessed with good feet and a beautiful udder. Her career is just starting and as I write these words, we are eagerly waiting on her to calve to our new herd sire SBV 711f. We can’t wait to see what she does in the future.

We purchased Karsen’s dam from the Lonestones in the fall of 2020. Her first calf a bull, was sold to Ryan Smith of Eckville, AB. Her second, a heifer, by Charles is retained in the herd and we are eagerly awaiting her first calf. Karsen is her third calf sired by Jenkins. Mitz or “Karen” as we call her is a nice sized polled cow. I just
love her udder and, she has one of the best set of hooves I’ve seen on a cow. Exciting future for Miss Mitz for sure. Karsen is a big, big boy and would work well on a British based cow herd, where his size will work in the new owners favor. Karsen weaned off his dam at 60% of her body weight.

Knox’s dam is a nice moderate framed Crossroad Radium cow. She’s been a troublefree cow. Dark brown in color with huge goggles. Knox is the second and last Jenkins bull on offer this year. Knox is again what I call a utility bull. His steers and heifers will weigh up good and fetch his owner good dollars for the return on investment. Knox weaned off his dam at an impressive 62% of her body weight.
Kingsley has a very unique and interesting pedigree. You see, his dam is a polled full blood cow out of our old herd sire SU Jenkins 6J, who by the way has 2 sons on offer in this year’s sale. 34D is a big volumed girl. We’ve registered 3/5 calves from her and are eagerly awaiting her 6th calf. After a couple of miss fires with the bulls we bred her to, we’ve discovered she doesn’t cross well with full blood bulls. Red factor bulls work great on her as Kingsley is a testament to. Kingsley came back Homo-polled, an added bonus for sure as he will poll all his calves. We bred 34D to our new herd sire, Erixon Lad 74J, who we acquired from Erixon Simmentals in the spring of 2022. The calves we’ve gotten from him so far have been very good. LHVS 34D weaned 55% of her body weight. Expect Kingsley to add pounds to his steer calves and excellent replacement females. Kingsley is a cow bull.

There are some greats in Kole’s pedigree, such as Klondike Gold Rush, Westdrums Andrew & Bel C&B Western 2nd. LHVS 51D is a moderate framed cow with a sweet temperament. Excellent feet and udder on this cow. The cows with bull calves this year really out did themselves with their calves and 51D is no exception. She weaned off 50% of her body weight this fall. Red Whiskey is a bull we’d use again in our program for sure.

Kane is our only black offering in the sale this year. We used Captain Morgan as our go to black bull, but for some reason he threw red calves on black cows. Insert frustrated face here. LHVS 41G is a big, strong Wheatland Affiliate cow with a perfect set of feet under her. This spring she’s had her 3rd calf, a big red bull calf by our new walking bull Erixon Lad 74J. Her first calf was sold this spring to Chad Beagle. Chad actually let us walk him as a clean up bull in our heifer pen and he’s been doing just fine in there. 41G weaned off 55% of her body weight this fall. Kane is what I’d call a utility bull, meaning he’ll cover your cows, give no problems calving and his daughters should make great cows.

Kash’s dam is a first calving Wheatland Kill Switch daughter. Being sired by Dillinger, his calving ease is nice and high at 14.8. Calving ease doesn’t necessarily translate into a heifer bull and we would recommend this bull be used on cows. His mom is a moderate framed cow, who is dark red with good feet and a beautiful udder. She can be also traced back to our bullet proof heifer bull LHVS 64A who is still working on a ranch in B.C.
LHVS 18H did a tremendous job on Kash, as he weaned off at 920 lbs. That translates into 66% of his dam’s body weight. That’s pretty darn impressive for a first-time mom. Kash will increase weaning weight but keep the calving ease for his new owner’s peace of mind.
Cow Bull. Kash is Diluter Free. Homozygous Polled.
Kyle is ¾ brother to LHVS 100J. Both are sired by Dillinger and from a Kill Switch cow. Kyles dam goes back to a cow we purchased as a heifer calf from Double Bar D, so there’s a little shot of Full Blood in his pedigree. Kyle’s dam is one of our best leader cows as was her mother. LHVS 21E is a big girl, with excellent feet and udder. We’ve really concentrated on feet and udders on our cows and it shows. Kyle’s dam weaned off 51% of her body weight this fall. 21E’s Captain Scream daughter has a bull in this sale as well. Look for LHVS 19K in the sale…he’s darn good too.

Kian’s dam is a small framed, dark red Charles’s daughter. We’ve registered 3/4 calves from her. Kian was our heavy weight, weaning off at an impressive 980lbs, which translated into 64% of his mom’s body weight. Kian is long as a
train, dark red with just a spot of white on his face. Calving ease combined with performance is a hard thing to find and I think Kian has those two things down pat. 9.7 for calving ease is perfect for cows.
Kooper is our only heifer bull in the offering this year. He has calving ease built right in with Dillinger as his sire and his dam is sired by our old bullet proof heifer bull LHVS 64A or “The Dink”. With a birth weight of 75lbs it make sense his calving ease is high at 15 and birth weight at a -3.0. Koopers dam is a solid black, small framed cow with lots of milk. 2E is a gentle little cow with really good feet under her. She did a bang- up job on Kooper as she weaned him off at 57% of her body weight. Kooper is quiet natured as well and is easy to handle. Kooper is Hetero-polled and Diluter free.
Kellan is out of a very, very gentle Full Blood cow LHVS 49G. 49G is mothered by Hannah’s “Glenda” cow who is the dam of LHVS 47K. Again, you can see good cow families at work here. Kellan is polled/scurred, something that Dillinger would do. Kellan’s calving ease is high but we recommend he be used on cows. If your heifers are big and strong maybe you could experiment on a few to see how he does. Kellan’s dam is a gentle cow, just like her mama. 49G did a great job with Kellan as well, weaning him off at 54% of her body weight.
Kellan is a cow bull and is Diluter Free.

Kamren is a Dillinger son out of a Charles daughter. His dam has a bright future here at the farm with us registering 3/3 calves from her. Her first bull calf, Nugget, was sold to our neighbour Karen Jaffray. LHVS 67F is a small framed cow just like her sister, 70E and her dam 19B. Longevity runs deep in this cow family as well a great productivity. 67F is dark red with small goggles. 67F did well with Kamren weaning him off at 58% of her body weight.

It is with great difficulty and pride that we offer these five heifers for your appraisal. All three of us argued why we should keep the five and why we should sell the five. It’s hard to part with these females as we’ve always felt that the heifers are the future of the herd and it is very difficult to just sell that potential away. But I don’t want to calve almost 30 heifers in the spring. 18-20 is plenty of work.
The full blood is the result of a flush with a LHVS Charles daughter and SBV 711F. The four remaining heifers are sired by our old heifer bull IPU Dillinger. We walked Dillinger as a clean-up side by side with 711. He crossed well with our mature cows.
So here is your opportunity to take advantage of Lockhart Valley Simmentals female genetics. Who knows, this might be a one-time deal or it could turn into something regular in conjunction with our bull sale. Only time will tell.

MS Lockhart 43K is the only full blood we will be offering for sale this year. Her dam, LHVS 62E, is a cow we think so highly of, we decided to flush her. 62E’s first calf, a bull, was sold to Leedale Colony of Rimbey, AB where he is still working. Her second bull calf was sold to Joe Cech of Stauffer, AB. Her third calf is a bred heifer, called Foxy Roxy, who is getting close to calving as I right this footnote. 62E is a dark, dark red, smaller framed cow. She’s just had her 5th natural calf, a bull by SBV 711F. 43K is a embryo and her recip dam did a good job on her. This heifer has her maternal grand-sire’s hair coat as well as the cherry red color. Big goggles and a nice big hoof under her. Look for her sire 711 to improve udders. Any 711 heifer calving this year have all had exceptional teats and udder attachment. LHVS 43K is Sire Verified and tested Diluter Free.

Kill Switch on the bottom of her pedigree insures there’s performance built in as well. 99J should have a bright future ahead of her. LHVS 99J is Hetero-polled, sire verified and diluter free.
Remember LHVS 12K? Well, his dam is maternal grand-dam to this heifer. 60K’s dam LHVS 33F’s first calf a bull, was sold to 619 Land and Cattle from Vermillion, AB. 33F just gave birth to a beautiful polled SU Jenkins bull calf and we are awaiting her 711 bred heifer to calve. 60K is dark red with a blaze face. This cutie is sire verified and diluter free.
This heifer’s pedigree is reversed from the other purebreds we’re offering. Her sire is our main herd sire, SBV 711F and from a “Blue” cow. IPU 97S was a bull we purchased from LaBatte Simmentals with Anchor D Ranch. One thing “Blue” does is make fantastic females. They are usually strong bodied females with excellent udders and feet, they are also good momma cows and can raise a calf. Add 711F in the mix and you’ve really got something. Hard to part with this girl. She’s the youngest of our offering but age is just a number with her. 66K is sire verified and diluter free.

Kraken is docile, thick made and built low to the ground. 55Ks dam is a cow that I can not say enough good things about. She is an eye-catching black baldy cow that is moderate, long bodied, beautifully uddered and stands on an impeccable set of feet that have never been touched. She is one that checks a lot of boxes for me and that is why despite not being fully papered, she continues to be a favourite at the farm. Her mating with the famous Riddler bull worked nicely, resulting in a bull calf that you won’t want to miss on sale day. HOMO POLLED
Silvertop King 39K is a bull that you can’t help but love. He was the pasture pest all summer, always demanding all the scratches and attention he could get. His unregistered Simmental dam was a moderate, first calf heifer who did an incredible job on raising her first calf, as he started out at a tender 70lb birth weight and weaned at 890lbs. 39K is a smooth made, structurally correct bull with advanced testicle development that carries a nice small head. King is the total package, being a calving ease bull that will also add performance. Commercial cattlemen should take note of this young herd sire on sale day, he is one that you could build a fancy herd of commercial females around.

RF Mandate is a bull I purchased from Rancier Farms back in 2021. I searched high and low for a calving ease sire that would not give up performance and Mandate is just that. He stamps his progeny very consistently by siring eye appealing, deep ribbed calves that are built low to the ground on impeccable feet. So far his sons have shown very advanced testicle development and the daughters I have look as though they will have beautiful udders with nice short teats. The most dominant trait of the Mandate sired calves is docility. The phenotypic traits in Mandate are strong, but if you take a look into the genotype he is nothing short of impressive on that side either. With his dam going through the famous Friday Night Lights sale and names such as RF CERTAINLY FLIRTIN 202Z, SVS CAPTAIN MORGAN 11Z, WFL SWEET LICIOUS 1044X, WFL WESTCOTT 24C, CCR COWBOY CUT 5048Z and WS PROCLAMATION E202 in his pedigree you know the product has got to be good. Mandate was used heavily again this year, so be sure to keep your eye out for RF 4G sired females and bulls in upcoming sales.
