CRISTINA FERNANDEZ VILLAR JOIN Manager
»Thank you for making this dream a reality«, a message we would like to share with our, more than forty partners who are the foundation of JOIN; who have put their trust and continue to do so. As a metaphor we could define JOIN as one of the three pillars which hold the BIG BERRY “House”. Alongside JOIN, two other pillars are – FEEL and CREATE. Allow us to briefly introduce the concept of each: • JOIN builds a strong relationship between the company and its partners • Through FEEL, BIG BERRY has been able to bring the products and services from partners to guests • CREATE is the base of Social and Sustainable BIG BERRY business model, making the luxury tourism more accessible to current and future licensees and franchisees JOIN’s main goal is to meet the objectives of our partners, deepen the relationship and set a unique path. During the past two seasons, many enriching and successful projects have been completed, not only achieving partners’ goals as private companies, but improving the standard and well-being of the community. Based on the success in Bela krajina, we are convinced it is possible in other destinations. This is not a conventional magazine. Instead of boasting our company and partners, we give the opportunity to speak to people, who have experienced, tasted and tested products and services. “A picture is worth a thousand words”. On every page, you will get to know our partners through photos which show love for the work they do. This magazine is an exemplification and a deserved tribute to the diligent and heart-warming work of our partners. Even though they work in five different sectors, they are all a part of the BIG BERRY family. New challenges and projects await us in the future, in which we trust you to accompany us as you have done up to now - making our mutual dreams a reality. And you? Do you dare to dream? Dream BIG. JOIN our family.

”
Status really surprised me. For the first time I was able to make the real veggie chips (carrot, red beet, sweet potato...) and what surprised me the most that all slices were of the same thickness. The blade is very sharp and it is really easy to clean. Status is usable in a different way. Since I have Status I don't use anymore knife for slicing. Katja Cernjak, BIG BERRY Chef, Slovenia

I like great kitchen utensils which can be used daily and save time in preparation of the food. It is not only that they are very useful but also make the cleaning quite simple. BELOKRANJSKO IZROČILO Belokranjsko izročilo shares almost forgotten knowledge inherited from our ancestors - music of Bela krajina Region, arts, crafts, regional gastronomy and the kindness characteristic for Bela krajina. They organize workshops, lectures; teach how to prepare traditional meals or Belokranjska pogača (local flatbread). By preparing individual programs for each visiting group, including tasting, socializing, learning and experiencing, they make sure that each individual customer’s wish is fulfilled. By visiting them you also have an opportunity to purchase handcrafted products and souvenirs by various local craftsmen.
”
During the day, there was the opportunity to meet some of the producers in person and get our hands into making these great delicacies. It was a blast to knead dough at Belokranjsko izročilo and make our own hot, fresh pogača from baker and handicraft with Bernarda. Eileen Cotter, www.crookedflight.com, UK
”
We visited Bernarda in Črnomelj to have a go at making our own pogača, and have to say it turned out pretty well. DOMAÄŒIJA
KUZMA A visit to DomaÄ?ija Kuzma will take you back to 16th century when the flour was manufactured from dozen different cereal crops. Back in that time, flour was considered an expensive ingredient and was one of the goods only rich could afford. During the visit you can enjoy a demonstration of the old grain milling techniques. This old and well-preserved homestead is located next to Kolpa River, surrounded by nature - a place where you can rejuvenate by swimming or canoeing in the river.

The history behind this family run watermill is super interesting, too. The lovely daughter of the owner showed us everything around it and told us a bit about how a watermill works. It is incredible to see how people used to prepare food, with all the machines and everything else. Marcela Fae, www.fotostrasse.com, Germany
”
We were given a tour of the property by this lovely girl named Urška, and she told us all about her family’s business, and how her ancestors bought the property back in 1909 (but the first mentions of the mill actually go back all the way to the 17th century). Dave Anderson, www.jonesaroundtheworld.com, USA
”
Visit this homestay to take a look at a very old flour mill. You’ll hear about the process and history that surrounds the castle and the Grajski mlin (flour mill). You’ll get to see how it actually works, and then you can walk around the gorgeous riverfront property. And if it’s a specially hot day, I suggest taking a dip! DOMAČA OBRT
CVITKOVIČ Domača Obrt Cvitkovič is focused on making products made of linen, the material traditional for the region. The whole process starts with planting flex which is later hand-picked and processed using only natural methods. The thread is then woven with a 200 years old wooden machine, and later sun-bleached to get the white colour of the Bela krajina folklore dress. The fabric is afterwards decorated with a red thread using a needle, to weave traditional Slavic patterns. They are also painting Easter eggs in a way traditional for Bela krajina and the decorated egg is called “Pisanice”.
”
In this gallery we were able to appreciate the traditional products of Bela krajina and tried to use their rudimentary machinery. There we also decorate the typical Easter eggs (called pisanice) in the traditional way: with beeswax and dyes. Until you get down to work you do not realize the work behind all these products. Diana Millos, www.dianamiaus.com, Spain
”
Fortunately, we were able to visit Nada, a local woman at Domača obrt Cvitkovič, that specializes in making the pisanica. Her eggs looked so beautiful we decided to try to make some ourselves! The trick in making the designs on these eggs is patience and very steady hands. Cameron Seagle and Natasha Alden, www.theworldpursuit.com, USA

We visited the Handicraft CvitkoviÄ? Gallery where we learned about traditional Slovenian crafts and clothing. The owners showed us how they make high-quality garments as well as a tour of the museum showing the local history. Spending an hour paddling down the Kolpa River was a really great experience. Another true farm to table experience! Enjoy a traditional Slovenian dinner (and lots of wine)! The tomatoes are so tasty and everything is so fresh. You’ll enjoy talking with the host so much that you won’t realize that hours have passed. Taylor Fuller, www.travelcolorfully.com, USA

Izletniška Kmetija Zupančič is a farm that invites its visitors to enjoy the beautiful and magnificent nature of Bela krajina Region. There you can see the black cave salamander (Proteus anguinus) which was discovered in Doblicica and later in the spring of Jelševnik, 300 years after the white olm. Make sure not to miss dining at a restaurant and tasting homemade food, juice and wine, especially lamb and grilled trout. Kmetija Zupančič also produces natural apple juice Lamut, which is a part of BIG BERRY breakfast basket.
”
Kmetija Zupančič was probably my favorite homestay visit during my stay at BIG BERRY. I had the most delicious dinner there – fresh fish, polenta, and veggies. We shared some Slovenian wine and learned about how the local products are used to be made. It was a real farm to table experience! Taylor Fuller, www.travelcolorfully.com, USA

Another huge highlight was getting to eat at the home of the delicious apple juice producers, Lamut, where we enjoyed a home cooked feast of fresh carp and trout washed down with apple juice, wine and a lot of rakija. Lucy Ruthnum, www.absolutelylucy.com, UK

One of our favorite meals was fresh grilled trout in Jelševnik. We are pretty die hard seafood fans so it takes a lot to impress us. We weren’t expecting much from the Slovenian trout, but were delighted when our host, Rihard, served up just caught trout, polenta, and roasted potatoes from his family’s local stream. In 2013, they have registered a supplementary activity of cooking jams, juices and many other products made from fruit. One of the main specialties from Kmetija Pavlovič is raspberry wine.
”
The raspberry wine is amazing and refreshing, sweet, delicate, it leaves a nice after taste and the strawberry marmalade is out of this world. The tastes combine into something heavenly. Zdravko Krnjajić, BIG BERRY Chef, Slovenia

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day helping at Danilo Pavlovič's farm picking aronia and other berries. When you can actually see where your food comes from, you realize to appreciate it even more. That's what happens with Pavlovic's raspberry wine and even homemade raspberry ice cream. The experience is unforgettable. Maria Stoyanova, www.travellingbuzz.com, Bulgaria

We had a great time exploring Kmetija Ĺ trucelj, one of the largest dairy farms in Bela krajina. I know that dairy consumption is a hot topic right now, so we were very happy in knowing these Slovenian cows live happy and long lives while grazing in open fields. Cameron Seagle and Natasha Alden, www.theworldpursuit.com, USA
”
Their homemade products really have full flavour of cow milk. They are tasty, soft and delicious and can be used in many cooking recipes. My favorite is homemade cottage cheese which we use to make »štruklji« with white and buckwheat flour and sweet cheese »potica« which is actually a dessert. Once you taste their products you don't search for anything else anymore. Andreja Drakulić Veselič, BIG BERRY Chef, Slovenia

We made a quick stop at Kmetija Štrucelj, the local farm, to say hello to the cows who kindly provided our dairy delights. The host always gives a warm welcome and guides the visitors around the cellars, finalizing the tour with wine tasting.
”
In Bela krajina, the wine we tasted from Malnarič was a solid table wine, in line with any mass-market Italian wine, though the New York Times reports that there are some spectacular vintages available – if you can get your hands on them outside of Slovenia, which may be difficult. From the first 350 walnut trees and over 300 hazelnut seedlings in 1990, the oil became well known among herbalists from the region. Many people visit them to purchase their products, but also to get advice on how to use oils for medicinal purposes or as diet supplements.

It seems you can make oil out of just about anything and there must have been at least 20 laid out here for us to try. As well as being tasty, they all had medicinal properties. SEMIŠKA PENINA In 1998, the Simonič family decided to contribute to the wine variety of Bela krajina Region and started producing sparkling wine. Only two years after, their wines became available in most of the big supermarket chains and their own wine cellar. The grapes, »modra frankinja« – the most popular grape variety in this region, have to be picked in early September. At Simonič family wine cellars, the sparkling wine is filled in bottles and stored horizontally for at least a year and a half. Just as still wines, sparkling wines are better when aged.
”
We uncorked a bottle of ‘Semiška Penina Gold’, a sparkling wine enriched with pure gold leaves. The small pieces of gold weren’t the only ingredient making this fresh and harmonious wine especially charming.
