OVER $365,000 RAISED! The 2014 B2Gold Big Brothers Golf Classic took place on Monday, September 22 at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club. With over $365,000 raised to support Big Brothers’ mentoring programs for children in our community, we managed to raise enough funding to support 243 vulnerable children this year! Imagine, with just one day of fun we are changing hundreds of lives forever. This tournament continues to grow each year and would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors, event participants, volunteers and staff. Returning for the fourth year as the tournament’s Title Sponsor, we also thank B2Gold for their remarkable support and efforts on the charity’s behalf.

MESSAGE FROM CLIVE On behalf of everyone at B2Gold, I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who participated in The 2014 B2Gold Big Brothers Golf Classic. The weather was perfect and the course at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club was flawless, allowing for our best tournament to date. Due to the generosity of our sponsors and participants in both the golf and the auction that followed, we were able to raise a record breaking $365,000 for Big Brothers. As with previous years, the event was organized and well executed, with great activities, food and beverages throughout the course. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and this was certainly our most successful event to date. I would like to thank the Shaughnessy club management and pro shop staff for their professional treatment of our group and congratulate them on the outstanding condition of their golf course. After the golf, guests bid on a vast selection of silent auction items and were able to enjoy another wonderful meal put on by the talented culinary staff at Shaughnessy. This year’s MC was Kate Gajdosik from Global BC and she was joined by Big Brother Cameron who gave his insight on what it means to be part of such a great organization. He is just one of many great Big Brothers who make a big difference in the lives of boys throughout the program.

COCKTAIL RECEPTION After a great day on the greens, golfers and guests ventured back to the clubhouse to relax and mingle over drinks and hors d’oeuvres as they browsed through the silent auction. Guests were encouraged to bid on wonderful weekend getaways, exquisite paintings, and new experiences. Raffle tickets were also a hot item, attracting attendees with an all-inclusive four day trip for two to Langara Island Lodge.

THE BANQUET After the cocktail reception, golfers gathered to celebrate the tournament with an impressive buffet-style dinner, hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Kate Gajdosik of Global BC Television. Golfers enjoyed photos from the day’s events, followed by a welcome message from Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver’s Executive Director, Valerie Lambert. We were delighted to have President, CEO and Director of B2Gold, Clive Johnson, deliver a message about the importance of mentoring and of B2Gold’s dedication to our community and communities across the globe. A supporter of Big Brothers for over 16 years, Clive spoke about the values shared by the two organizations.

Dinner guests were also lucky enough to hear from Big Brother Cameron Nevay about the impact the program has had on him and his Little Brother. Cameron is one of many Big Brothers in our program who have seen first hand the positive effects that mentoring can have on vulnerable children. His moving personal experience inspired the adoption of 24 matches by guests in the room that night!
With thousands of local children already benefiting from having Big Brothers, yet so many still waiting to be matched, there is still much funding required. We want to sincerely thank those who stepped up to help at the event this year.

CASE FOR SUPPORT Our goal is to help 1,500 children annually by 2015. Our mission is to enhance children’s social and emotional development by delivering and advocating for the highest quality, prevention-based mentoring programs. Our vision is to put a mentor in the life of every child who needs one. We have a strategic plan in place to get us there operationally but need funding to make it a reality.

At Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, we help at-risk children realize their full potential. At-risk is defined as a situational state a child finds himself in when his upbringing includes a number of adversity factors which heighten his future probability to lead a troubled adult life and lessen his likelihood to reach his full potential. risk factors include: • Newly Immigrated • Family Structure • Income Level
reSiLienCy refers to that magical quality in children that allows them to overcome hardship and develop into well functioning adults despite high risk conditions in their upbringing. Still, many children face too many risk factors to maintain resilience on their own. Big Brothers fosters resilience by matching at-risk children with positive adult mentors. WhO Are LiTTLe BrOTherS? They typically have the following similarities although we do make some exceptions: • Must fall within 7 – 14 years of age • have limited to no contact with their fathers • Must be in a stable home environment • Cannot have extreme behavioral issues

One in four Lower Mainland children grow up without a father.
Based on an annual cost per match of $1,500, we need to generate the dollars indicated below each year to meet our annual and overall 2015 goal.
The united Way estimates there to be some 10,000 Lower Mainland children who could benefit from a positive adult mentor. in some areas, children wait two years to be matched with Big Brothers, largely due to lack of funding for outreach. 79% of our funding is utilized to ensure child safety. in a recent survey, 100% of the Little Brothers surveyed indicated they feel safe with their Big Brothers. Our staff to volunteer ratio is 1:47. if we meet our goal to help 1,500 children annually by 2015, the volunteer hours donated will total 1,123,361.

COST Per MATCh Safety is the primary component of our cost per match, meaning donors can be assurred their dollars are being utilized well. The cost per match breakdown is as follows: 12% Administration 78% Direct Services to Children and Youth

eXiSTing FunDing SOurCeS With base funding sources in place, donors see Big Brothers as a financially responsible charity with a steady revenue stream. Big Brothers Clothing Donation generates over half of our existing funding with our Foundation’s fundraising initiatives, including events and major donations, making up the balance. Still, we need additional funding in order to grow and adequately serve the at-risk children in our community.
