Saving lives this winter

As winter takes hold we are reminding people to only come to our busy Accident & Emergency department (A&E) if they really need our expert help.

41 year old John Gilmartin will always be grateful for the expertise of our medical teams who fought to save his life. John’s heart had stopped several times when he was rushed into A&E on a Sunday morning back in September.

John’s story has a happy ending – after eight days in hospital he was fit enough to return home to his family.

As winter bites, the pressure on our A&E at the Royal Derby Hospital grows. It is crucially important that people only use the A&E department when they have a genuine emergency.

So the message this winter is clear - don’t turn up to A&E with illnesses you would normally see you GP about, don’t come to A&E just because you want a second opinion or because you can’t get an appointment with your own GP. Come when you really need to and let A&E do what they do best... save lives.

2 The remarkable story of John Gilmartin, whose life was saved by our skilled cardiologists and A&E team, sends out a serious message this winter.

Every year, as the temperatures drop and the days shorten, so the pressure grows on busy hospitals across the country. Here in Derby we have teams of highly skilled medics who are available to save lives but we need your help to make sure our A&E department is used properly this winter.

Please don’t come to A&E at the Royal Derby Hospital if you could be seen by your GP or if you just want a second opinion. There are plenty of other NHS services which you can use. Dial 111 to find the best service for you.

In this edition of Taking Pride we celebrate winning a major national award for our compassionate care.

Here at Derby Hospitals I am immensely proud of the caring and compassionate way in which we care for patients. We know we don’t always get it right but compassion lies at the heart of what we do and we are working hard to make sure all our staff share this caring ethos.

I would like to thank staff for all their hard work during the past year and I would like to wish you all a healthy and happy New Year.

Derby Birth Centre - a home from home In October, our new midwife-led birth centre opened. It is located alongside the labour ward at the Royal Derby Hospital and offers mums to be a new choice of birthing experience for the safe arrival of babies in Derby.

The Derby Birth Centre is a relaxing purpose built centre providing a home from home experience with the reassurance specialist doctors are on hand if needed.

It offers women experiencing a straightforward pregnancy and anticipating a normal birth an alternative to a home birth or the

traditional labour ward.

Our dedicated team of midwives will provide care and support to families making them feel safe and involved at this special time. There are four en-suite rooms and a water birth room. All rooms have sensory lighting, calming music, and soft home furnishings complete with swinging crib ready for the new arrival!

If you or a family member are pregnant and may be interested in finding out more please ask your community midwife for information.

Derby patients benefit from advanced radiotherapy treatments Derby Hospitals is a regional Cancer Centre caring for patients with many different types of cancer.

Developments in cancer diagnosis and treatments are important to continually improve care for patients in Derby.

Derby Hospitals recently received £500,000 from the Cancer Radiotherapy Innovation Fund and is now able to offer patients access to advanced radiotherapy, which reduces the side-effects of standard cancer treatments.

More than 50% of our cancer patients are now benefiting from this advanced radiotherapy treatment improving the care they receive.

Wendy Steele, radiotherapy services manager, said “This treatment has been very beneficial to patients because they experience fewer side effects. Patients with prostate cancer are the largest group to benefit so far from this specialist treatment because the high doses of radiation can be targeted very precisely minimising the damage to the bladder and bowel. This is a really positive step forward in cancer care for local people.”

A new service is now available for patients in A&E who need access to interpreter services at short notice. The video system enables staff to call on sign language interpreters 24-hours a day.

David Ainsworth, general manager for acute medicine, said: “We are very excited about trialling this scheme to improve patient experience. Having a sign language interpreter does make it easier for deaf people to talk to doctors and give a clearer account of their symptoms.”

Robin Ash, regional campaign co-ordinator for the British Deaf Association, said: “We thank the Royal Derby Hospital for involving us and listening to our feedback.

We know from experience it can be very difficult for deaf people to communicate, particularly in stressful situations such as visiting A&E. This scheme will allow sign language interpreters to translate deaf patients’ ailments with precision and greater clarity. It will also help doctors provide a personalised service to patients fully involving them in their care.”

Ward make-over helps patients with dementia Wards at London Road Community Hospital have had a make-over to help patients with dementia feel less confused and more at home during their recovery.

Bright colours have been used in each four-bed bay to help patients recognise where they are supposed to be and brightly coloured hand rails have been fitted to help them move around.

This is part of our 4-year plan to improve safety and experience for patients with dementia.

We are already seeing a reduction in patient falls and positive feedback from carers and relatives.

Lots of work has also been completed at the Royal Derby Hospital with memory cafes, reminiscence rooms and young activity volunteers supporting patients at mealtimes all improving

the care and experience of elderly patients.

Our work to improve safety and experience for patients with dementia has been recognised in a prestigious national award for compassionate patient care. See page 9 for more.

Providing the best standards of care for hip fracture patients If you are an elderly patient with a broken hip needing surgery you are more likely to recover quicker and have a shorter stay at the Royal Derby Hospital compared to other hospitals across the country.

A recent national report revealed 96% of Royal Derby Hospital hip fracture patients receive surgery within 48 hours and the average length of stay in hospital is 12 days, the lowest in the East Midlands and one of the lowest rates nationally.

“Here at Derby Hospitals we treat around 550 patients with hip fractures each year” says orthopaedic consultant Stephen Milner, who is clinical lead for orthopaedics and trauma. “We are delighted that for many years our care has been highly rated.

This means that patients requiring hip fracture surgery here in Derby receive the best possible care.”

Pioneering children’s care

Excellence in service by experts in care

Mr Rohan Rajan, whose pioneering work has helped around 100 local children born with a common deformity, has been honoured by the Mayor of Derby.

Talipes – or clubfoot - affects around one in 1,000 births in the UK each year. Derby is the only centre in the UK to offer an antenatal clubfoot service whereby clubfoot is diagnosed before birth using ultrasound scanning.

For those children diagnosed with clubfoot our pioneering treatment

now means they don’t have to have painful surgery, giving children and their families a much better care experience.

Congratulations to Mr Rajan and his dedicated team for their efforts to improve the quality of care and experience of young children.

Saving lives this winter

Did you know?

John Gilmartin has a lot to be grateful for. The 41 year olds heart had stopped several times when he was rushed into A&E at the Royal Derby Hospital on a Sunday morning back in September.

John’s miraculous story illustrates why it is important to remember to use A&E wisely this winter…

Paramedics had to use electric shocks to restart John’s heart on 11 occasions before the ambulance reached the hospital.

He was then nursed in the intensive care unit before being moved to coronary care and he was able to leave hospital just 8 days later.

Expert teams in A&E continued the work to save his life, using many more electric shocks. The on-call cardiology team were on hand very quickly and the decision was taken to immediately insert an intra-aortic balloon pump into the patient’s heart whilst in the resuscitation room.

“John has made such a good recovery because we were all able to act so quickly and as a result his heart has not been damaged in spite of everything that happened that day. I feel very proud of the service we offer here in Derby and this is proof of what we can achieve” explains Dr Tariq Azeem, consultant cardiologist and clinical lead.

“This has never been done before in A&E; usually a heart attack patient will be taken to the nearby cardiac catheter suite where this procedure is performed but there wasn’t time to do this and so the cardiac consultant went ahead and carried out this life saving procedure in the resus room” explains A&E consultant Dr Manjeet Riyat.

Mr Gilmartin was then taken to the cardiac catheter suite where a clot was removed from an artery in his heart. Again he needed electric shock treatment as doctors fought to save his life.

“It is a great tribute to the skill of everyone involved.”

John and his wife Sally came back to A&E to meet the hospital teams who saved his life on that fateful day. “I can’t remember anything about what happened to me” says John “but I know that I was looked after in an absolutely fantastic way by everyone at the Royal Derby Hospital and I’ll always be so grateful for what all the doctors did for me that day. They saved my life and without them I wouldn’t be

A&E consultant Dr Riyat, who was leading the emergency team when John arrived at the hospital, says his subsequent recovery has been remarkable “It is nothing short of a miracle that we were able to save his life. He is relatively young, he’d always been in good health and had never been seriously ill before.

It is a great tribute to the skill of everyone involved.”

Changing how we care for you A&E isn’t always the right place to get the care you need in an emergency. In fact there are many occasions when someone’s health is deteriorating that they need additional support. This may be to prevent them from becoming seriously unwell in the first place, or to help them stay healthy at home once they have left hospital.

That’s why we working in partnership with the Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group and local GPs to use £4.4 million additional winter funds to create new health services for local people.

Many of these new services are already up and running supporting patients in the community. Other services have also been set up within the hospital to provide better care for those who do need to come to hospital.

Here are just a few examples of new local health services, which highlight the hard work underway to improve how we care for you and your relatives.

Frail elderly assessment service A dedicated service is now up and running at the Royal Derby Hospital for elderly patients. This means they will be quickly assessed in A&E and where appropriate will be transferred to the care of a dedicated new team of specialist doctors, nurses, therapists and social workers to ensure all their health and social care needs are addressed. This service connects health and social care together to provide comprehensive personalised care for older patients.

Preventing falls Older people who have fallen or are at risk of falling can now be seen at our falls and rapid assessment clinic at London Road Community Hospital.

The service has been extended to five days a week and aims to provide early support to frail and older people. Previously patients had to wait six weeks to be seen however, we can now provide a full assessment by doctors, nurses and therapists within 48-hours. We are doing all we can to reduce the risk of patients falling helping them maintain their independence at home.

End of life care at home Supporting people to die in their place of choice is so important to patients and their families. Many people want to die in their own home surrounded by their loved ones rather than being admitted to hospital. However, we know this is a very difficult time. To support patients and families in the final days and hours we are now offering a rapid response service day and night provided by Treetops and Marie Curie.

Hospital at home volunteers We know that sometimes it can be difficult for elderly patients to return home after a stay in hospital. That’s why patients cared for at London Road Community Hospital are now being offered support at home from a hospital volunteer. Our trained volunteers are able to visit patients for up to 5 weeks, offering help with basic shopping, giving advice, as well as becoming a friendly face and someone to chat to. Patients will be offered this service before they leave hospital as an important part of their recovery.

My health Building on our award winning work to support patients with long-term conditions who are at high risk of being readmitted to hospital with ill health, further help and reassurance is now available to 100 patients with respiratory illnesses. They are being invited to take part in a health coaching scheme, which provides additional support encouraging patients to take care of themselves, particularly in the cold weather, which can seriously affect their breathing and health.

Behind the headlines Legionella bacteria found in water system Smoking outside our hospitals In late October, the Derby Telegraph reported that legionella bacteria had been found in the water system in one part of a building at the Royal Derby Hospital.

We’d like to reassure you that this is not unusual. In large public buildings a low level of legionella bacteria is likely to be present but poses no risk. Frequent water testing takes place and this was how we found out that there was a

higher level of the bacteria isolated to one area of the hospital.

Immediate action was taken, in consultant with Public Health England and our consultant microbiologists, to flush the water system and raise the water temperature to 70 degrees centigrade to kill any remaining bacteria. Meanwhile, we continued to test the water.

There is a lengthy incubation period with the testing taking 14 days to

produce results so we did not know the results immediately. In early November we were able to confirm that the swift action we had taken had succeeded in eliminating the legionella bacteria.

We issued statements to the paper to reassure the public that there were no concerns about patient safety. No patients were affected and there were no areas of the hospital closed as a result.

Our response to our regulator Monitor In October the health regulator Monitor issued a press release which said that Derby Hospitals had to make “immediate improvements” to its performance against a series of targets.

The Trust has not been questioned in terms of clinical standards or patient care. Monitor’s action is based only on performance, in particular for A&E and finance.

These issues are particularly challenging for us as more patients with serious illnesses are coming

to A&E, putting the service under severe pressure. This sometimes makes it very difficult to treat patients within four hours.

However, we never turn patients away who need our care and our A&E team are continuing to work hard to provide the best care for patients.

In addition to this unfortunately, we only get 30% of what it costs to treat many of these patients.

This also means that we are losing millions of pounds worth of income we would otherwise have

received and have actually spent on providing care.

We are doing all we can to deliver financial sustainability, and to meet other targets. Delivering faster urgent care is the most important issue for the Trust this winter.

Although Monitor have escalated their sanctions against us, comparisons with similar hospitals suggest that we are performing as well as - if not considerably better than - many other acute hospitals in the NHS at present.

How we deal with complaints Over the past year the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has raised concerns about complaints, in particular the length of time we have taken to respond.

Derby Hospitals has now signed up to the Nursing Times ‘Speak out Safely’ campaign to reinforce the message that staff can safely raise any concerns they may have about patient care and safety.

In July the CQC acknowledged progress was being made to bring about improvements. Our clinical teams have worked hard to deal with a backlog of complaints and these were cleared up by the end of September.

Our support for the Speak Out Safely campaign reinforces our commitment to making sure all our staff feel able to speak up if they have any concerns about standards of care.

From July 1st a new complaints policy has also been in place with a commitment to responding to patients within 25 days. Over 70% of the complaints we have received since July have been dealt with within 25 days ensuring patients and relatives receive a thorough response to their concerns.

“We want to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care” says Cathy Winfield, Derby Hospitals’ Chief Nurse “We encourage staff to raise any concerns they may have and we already have a policy in place which supports our staff to speak out in such circumstances. We are very happy to make a public

commitment to this by pledging our support to the ‘Speak Out Safely’ campaign. We want everyone to feel able to highlight poor practice

Patients have complained to the Derby Telegraph that smokers on hospital grounds, particularly near entrances, are impacting on their care.

A front page story told how a patient coming to the Royal Derby Hospital had to walk past smokers outside a hospital entrance.

His story generated a big response from readers, many of them supporting his view and condemning smoking on hospital grounds. Many readers called for the hospital to take action.

The Trust does have a no-smoking policy across the hospital site and we are keen to do all we can to enforce this.

However, we are finding enforcing this is very difficult to do particularly when people become distressed when visiting the hospital, either for treatment or to see a loved one.

This issue is an ongoing challenge for all hospitals across the country and in Derby we are continuing to do all we can to ensure the hospital is a healthy environment for everyone.

Our centres of excellence make the news Here at Derby Hospitals we are proud of our excellent clinical services. In recent months our teams have been highlighted as examples of best practice in three areas.

In October the work of our Parkinson’s Disease specialist team was highlighted as an example of best practice by BBC 2’s Newsnight programme.

Nin Bajaj, consultant neurologist and Lisa Brown, specialist nurse as well as patients receiving care and therapy at the London Road Community Hospital.

The programme featured a debate on the standard of Parkinson’s care across the country, particularly focusing on the significant number of hospital admissions for patients with Parkinson’s and highlighting concerns regarding the impact delays to medication can have on the quality of care and outcomes for these patients.

Our Parkinson’s team, together with some of their patients, flew to Montreal for the World Parkinson’s Congress where the innovative work taking place in Derby was highlighted.

In August new national guidelines were introduced across the NHS for the detection and management of acute kidney injury (AKI). The Royal Derby Hospital is leading the rest of the country in the early detection and treatment of AKI. Derby Hospitals’ consultant renal physician, Dr Richard Fluck is national clinical director for renal services and he was interviewed

by BBC TV’s health correspondent Branwen Jeffreys as he spoke to patients on our renal ward.

Dr Rob Skelly, one of our consultant physicians and geriatrician, presented his paper at the world congress, which focused on how specialist units can improve hospital care for people with Parkinson’s.

This paper was based on research carried out at Derby Hospitals.

AKI occurs silently and is hard to identify. However, it can be prevented if detected early. The BBC team also filmed in our pathology labs to show how, in Derby, we have designed a simple blood test for all inpatients to find out if they have unknown problems with their kidneys. In just one year, we were able to help over 4,500 patients providing early treatment and care, preventing severe damage later in their lives.

The Derby Telegraph also reported that lives are being saved daily across the UK thanks to the work of Derby’s AKI innovators.

Rheumatology ‘Healthcare Champions’ In November, our Rheumatology Team was honoured in a special ceremony at the House of Commons. Dr Chris Deighton and his team were named Healthcare Champions by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society.

“We’re absolutely delighted to win this prestigious Award” said Kate Gadsby, rheumatology nurse specialist. “Here at the Royal Derby Hospital we’re committed to delivering the best possible care for our patients living with rheumatoid arthritis.

To be nominated for this Award directly by our patients means a great deal and we’re very proud of this achievement.

Awards Pride of Derby Awards Patient and relatives have nominated over 550 staff and teams so far this year for their exceptional compassion and care in our quarterly Pride of Derby awards.

This award scheme is open throughout the year giving patients, visitors and staff an opportunity to nominate anyone they feel has gone the extra mile, above and beyond their role to improve patient care and staff experience.

Here are our recent winners, which yet again are fantastic examples of where individuals and teams are delivering an excellent service every day by role modelling our CARE values.

The ‘Best Frontline’ member of staff award went to renal services manager, Rani Uppal from medicine. Rani was nominated for going above and beyond her role supporting our very first hospital transplant patient team at the International Transplant Games. She went the extra mile for her patients arranging their ongoing clinical care whilst they were overseas. Many patients nominated her for a Pride of Derby award highlighting the impact her actions have had, making a real difference to their quality of life.

The ‘Best Team’ went to Ward 205 trauma and orthopaedic surgical ward. Staff received an unprecedented number of nominations from patients and relatives praising the dedication of the team and the high standards of care they received. Patients and relatives praised the team’s commitment to communication, particularly with the relative of a patient who lived very far away, as well as their ability to talk to patients clearly and involve them in their care. One patient summed the ward up by saying “Ward 205 is a shining example of all that is excellent practice about the NHS”.

The ‘Best Behind the Scenes’ member of staff awards went to June Bettson-Green, clinical audit and effectiveness facilitator.

June always finds time to provide support and guidance to others often sharing her knowledge and experience to help colleagues learn and develop.

The ‘Inspirational Leader’ went to frontline senior sister, Helena Leech. She was nominated for inspiring her small but highly dedicated team who provide acute care to sick patients with heart problems. She is an exemplary nurse, fantastic with patients and a real role model to her team.

National Beacon for Compassionate Patient Care

In November, Derby Hospitals was incredibly proud to be praised by the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt for our pioneering work with elderly patients and patients with dementia.

The Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital were the winners of the Health Service Journal Compassionate Patient Care Award, which was introduced for the first time this year following the tragic failings at Stafford Hospitals.

Despite the challenges the NHS is facing, this award shows that staff and volunteers are going that extra mile proving that small things can make a really big difference to elderly patients.

Chief Nurse, Cathy Winfield said “We’re really pleased for the teams involved in this award and also proud of all our staff for the way they treat patients, and each other, compassionately. The judges said they were inspired and enthused by the care we offer and, though we don’t always get it right, we have always demonstrated we learn. In situations where people find themselves under pressure or busy, it can sometimes be easy to forget the little things – but, actually, smiling at people or treating them with dignity or respect doesn’t cost a thing”.

Derby was chosen as the national winner of this award from 111 other hospitals around the country, for our work to enhance care for elderly patients and patients with dementia. We’ve complemented existing nursing support with innovative schemes based on intergenerational partnerships between young volunteers and elderly patients.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo F Buscaglia Over 100 young volunteers from local schools including Landau Forte College and Repton School are amongst those working across 20 wards at the Royal Derby and London Road Community Hospitals befriending patients and undertaking activities with them before meals. This is giving young people a real insight into what it takes to work in a caring profession to shape their future career choices.

We’ve also improved award environments for elderly patients with 1950’s reminiscence rooms and memory cafes amongst the changes that have already been introduced. We’ve created a home from home environment helping patients with their recovery.

Sue James, chief executive said “This is a tremendous recognition of all the hard work and dedication of staff throughout our hospitals and our strong partnerships with local schools. To have been chosen as a finalist was a huge compliment but to actually win this award is a real accolade”.

Our innovative partnership with local schools has truly put Derby Hospitals at the forefront of compassionate care across the whole NHS. Congratulations and thank you to all staff and volunteers involved.

Making Your Moment Matter We know from the feedback we receive that often it’s the small things we do that can make the biggest difference to patients, carers and relatives.

we have identified our top 10 ‘moments’ and have created a new hospital commitment - Making ‘Your Moment’ Matter.

The first contact a patient or relative has with staff, whether it is a receptionist, porter, nurse, therapist or doctor for example, is an important ‘moment’ for staff to give and patients to receive the best experience whilst in our care.

Look out for...

If you have been on Ward 205 recently you may have spotted our new ‘Star Boards’. These were developed by nurses, Mark Croton and Kat Smyth to encourage staff to leave positive feedback for their team.

The idea of the star board came from a visit to another hospital in Gateshead where the boards are used to encourage staff to share ideas and give each other positive feedback to boost staff morale and team working.

This is part of a programme we are working on with other hospitals across the country to share simple ideas that work well to improve staff and patient experience on wards.

Patients and relatives will also be able to see star boards on wards, which we hope will show our openness and transparency of ward communications and team working giving added reassurance patients are in safe hands.

If you are a patient or visitor to Derby Hospitals, you will see our staff wearing a range of different uniforms. We now have a new uniform to add to this list – the skilled men and women who you will see wearing red scrubs are our new advanced clinical practitioners.

They may be highly experienced nurses, they may be paramedics, physiotherapists or other health professionals. Whatever their professional background, these new advanced clinical practitioners can be found in A&E, in our medical assessment unit, across medical wards and in our premature baby unit.

Advanced clinical practitioner Clare Sutherland tells us about this new role: “I work in our busy medical assessment unit, seeing patients as they are admitted to the Royal Derby Hospital. I’m instantly identifiable in my bright red medical scrubs. As advanced clinical practitioners we are all experienced professionals supporting medical & nursing teams to provide high standards of care for our patients.

Many of us are nurses, like myself, with a great deal of hands-on experience of caring for patients.

In this new role we are qualified to do more than a nurse, for example we can prescribe and administer medicines and we have to be educated to a Master’s degree level before we can become an advanced clinical practitioner.

“We bring with us a wealth of experience” We can request investigations and refer to specialists, we can also discharge a patient. We are all registered healthcare professionals, from a variety of different backgrounds, who’ve been working hands on with patients over many years so we bring with us a wealth of experience.

The creation of this new role here at Derby Hospitals recognises the fact that healthcare has changed in recent years. Nowadays doctors and nurses work differently, years ago doctors and nurses worked very separately but that has completely

changed and today, in modern hospitals like ours, there’s a much closer working relationship between the two.

In some ways, as advanced clinical practitioners, we are the link between the two. Here in the medical assessment unit I see a patient to make an initial assessment, I take their medical

history, examine them, take bloods, order x-rays, chase all the results and make a diagnosis and create a treatment plan.

All the time I liaise with medical colleagues and nursing colleagues and at the heart of all of this is the patient whose care is central to everything we are doing.

It’s about organising the right treatment at the right time, in the right place. We work closely with junior doctors who have been in medical school but whose hands on patient experience may be limited.

We have got the experience to help them; we know how to get things done and who to speak to.

The creation of this new role, for some of our most experienced people, is important because it means we’re keeping good nurses, physiotherapists and other professionals at the patient’s bedside. It means we can advance our careers without taking a managerial post, we can remain with our patients doing what we love and this is keeping good quality staff by the bedside.

Every day patient safety and quality care is in the hands of all our staff – keeping up to date with important issues such as infection control, safeguarding, information governance and other essential training is everyone’s responsibility.

In the same way that we all need a passport to go on holiday to ensure security checks have been undertaken to protect your fellow holiday makers, at Derby Hospitals we’re introducing a new ‘Training Passport’ for staff to ensure all safety checks are complete to protect our patients.

All staff will soon be able to access their training records whenever they want, with reminders of

when their training needs to be updated via our ‘Training Passport App’. This is one of many ways we are working together to ensure our staff always provide the best quality of care to patients.

This year the Trust has taken part in a National Blood Transfusion patient awareness campaign. Blood transfusion can be a crucial part of a patient’s treatment and we successfully help thousands of patients every year.

We are encouraging all patients needing a blood transfusion to ask health care professionals ‘Do you know who I am?’ All patients must be asked to state their full name and date of birth prior to blood tests, investigations, treatment or a blood transfusion.

What can you do for us?

When you are admitted to hospital, check that you have a wristband on, with the correct details, including the correct spelling of your name, and correct date of birth. Ensure that staff check who you are! You are well within your right to ask them “Do you know who I am?”

Safety is a priority for all hospital staff and this is one of many safety measures we have in place across the Trust. By involving patients in their care we aim to give added reassurance and confidence in the consistently high quality of care patients can expect to receive.

Governors in focus Alison Booth, who works at the Trust as a research nurse in rheumatology, was elected to the Council of Governors as a staff governor this July. In this article Alison tells us more about the role.

“Staff governors have the same role as public governors and form part of the Trust’s commitment to public accountability. The Council of Governors has a statutory responsibility to hold the non-executive directors to account and through them the actions of the Trust Board.

Come and hear from a patient about their experience of research and from a clinician about the importance of research on treatment.

With 7 staff governors and over 8,000 staff our challenge is to find ways of engaging with such a large work force and informing staff about our work as governors.

I am currently looking at setting up a staff governor blog on the intranet to raise awareness and reflect the work of all seven staff governors. I hope this will provide a useful forum for staff to gain an insight and understanding of the on-going work of governors. Hopefully more staff will take the opportunity to let us know their issues.”

The Annual Members’ meeting was held in September at the Assembly Rooms, Derby. The whole evening, which concluded with our annual staff Celebrating Success Awards, was very successful, with over 110 members and governors and over 100 staff attending. Sue James, chief executive, gave a presentation

Our popular talks are open to all and are an excellent way of finding out more about our services.

The first talk of 2014 will be 12 March on “Taking Part in Research”

Governors are there to represent the views and concerns of members and the public. As employees, staff governors can bring a unique understanding of the issues faced by the Trust, which we can then use in representing staff interests.

Grace Pearn and Sheena Hill, staff governors based at the London Road Community Hospital, have been busy setting up staff forums there, which is proving very successful.

One aspect rated highly was the Question and Answer session where responses were given to a variety of issues raised by attendees. The opportunity to put questions to the Board is not limited to the Annual Meeting, at the end of every Public Board meeting there is time allocated to questions from the public. Winter health and wellbeing Take control of your long-term condition this winter If you, or someone you know, has a health condition - such as asthma, diabetes, MS, or a chest, heart, liver or kidney complaint – take control this winter by taking a few simple steps.

Get a flu jab It can protect you all winter. If you have a long term health condition and you catch flu you’re at a greater risk of complications. Contact your GP surgery to find out details of flu clinics or to book an appointment. The NHS is offering all NHS staff a free vaccine helping staff to protect themselves, their families and their patients – look out for drop in clinics at the hospital.

Think ahead Make sure that you have enough medication to last when your GP surgery may be closed. Don’t forget to order repeat prescriptions well in advance of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Sounds simple, but visit your pharmacy Don’t forget that your local pharmacist can offer you free, qualified health advice at any time, and no appointment is necessary. From coughs and colds to aches and pains, they can give you expert help on everyday illnesses and answer any questions about prescribed and over-the-counter medicines.

Know when NHS services near your home are open A&E and GPs aren’t your only options. You’ll often be seen quicker at other NHS services, so check out NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk) for your nearest pharmacy, walk-in centre or minor injuries unit. Remember you can call NHS 111 24-hours a day to get immediate health care advice and support.

Catch it, kill it, bin it Almost everyone will have a cough or cold at some point this winter. Don’t spread your germs. Cough or sneeze into a tissue, put it in the bin and wash your hands to stop the spread of germs.

Antibiotics will not treat viruses such as common colds, they simply don’t work. If you have a cold your immune system will help you recover. There are many ways you can get help without seeing your GP. Talk to your pharmacist about taking paracetomol or an over-the-counter cold remedy or contact NHS 111 if you want

to check you’re doing the right thing. Resting, drinking fluids and washing your hands regularly with soap and water all help to reduce the spread of infection.

Only visit your GP when necessary and use antibiotics responsibly - your GP will be able to advise you whether antibiotics will help.

Serves: 8 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 onion, chopped 2 to 3 carrots, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 green pepper, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 to 3 stalks celery, chopped 1 tablespoon chilli powder 1/2 (200g) punnet mushrooms, chopped 2 (400g) tins peeled plum tomatoes, chopped 1 (400g) tin kidney beans, undrained 1 (340g) tin sweetcorn, undrained 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil Method Prep:25min Cook:30min Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook onions, carrots and garlic until tender. Stir in green pepper, red pepper, celery and chilli powder. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 6 minutes.

Stir in mushrooms, and cook 4 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, kidney beans and sweetcorn. Season with cumin, oregano and basil. Bring to the boil, and reduce heat to medium. Cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce thickens.
