Positive response to flu vaccine initiative In just over two weeks the Trust has protected 10 per cent of its frontline staff by vaccinating them against the flu. This year’s positive response has been seen as a result of more convenient ways to access the vaccine with ward sisters and charge nurses now able to vaccinate staff in their own wards and departments. Newly-introduced drop-in sessions and pop-up clinics that are available across the Trust are also making it easier than ever before for staff to do the right thing for patients who are often more at risk of developing severe complications as a consequence of the flu. Dr Zoe Wyrko The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu – despite some myths around the vaccine – according to the Deputy Head of Occupational Health, Louise Hopton. Louise said: “We know that many people

believe that the flu jab makes you ill, but that simply isn’t true for the large majority of people. “Most people don’t get any side effects at all. A very small number of people may feel achy for a day or two, but the vaccine doesn’t contain any living virus, so it cannot possibly give you the flu. “Given the protection that it offers to you and our patients, it surely is worth doing the right thing by having the vaccine to reduce that risk.” In previous years, negative press attention around the flu vaccine has deterred some members of staff; however Occupational Health and the Trust’s Infection Prevention and Control team are confident that this year’s vaccine will be effective in helping you to fight the flu. Following a report from the Office for National Statistics that highlighted flu as the
cause of an increase in deaths in the over 75s, Consultant Geriatrician at QEHB, Dr Zoe Wyrko, said: “Influenza is a serious disease that can complicate or worsen the recoveries of our patients, and we know that every flu season is different – so it is important that as doctors and front-line medical professionals and healthcare workers, we should be doing what we can to reduce any additional or potential risk to our patients. “Furthermore, patients should be reminded that if they are over 65, or have a chronic health condition, they should visit their GP to get their free flu jab to help them stay well this winter.” QEHB Charity’s annual flu vaccination competition is also running, with each ward vaccinating over 75% of their staff being automatically in for the chance of winning a £200 voucher to benefit their ward or department’s staff.
