Welcome to the first issue of SFH News.

This winter has been a very busy one for the entire NHS and we were not immune from those same challenges. On occasions the unprecedented demand on our services led to a number of cancelled operations and appointments for our patients – a decision that is not taken lightly and is always made in the interests of patient safety. To those patients who were adversely affected during this time I apologise – we must do better and we will do better.

Paul Robinson joined the Trust as Chief Finance Officer in March, moving from Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust where he has worked for two years as Executive Director of Finance.

During this time he was the lead for development and delivery of financial planning, successfully delivering a surplus, whilst achieving efficiency targets.

As always colleagues across the Trust have risen to the challenge and worked extremely hard to strive for the high standards of care that people expect and deserve. I know I speak for the entire Board of Directors when I say that we are very grateful to all those colleagues who have been working extra shifts in our hospitals and in the community to deliver quality patient care to all. You can read more about how we coped during a busy winter on pages 8-9.

Paul brings with him over 25 years of NHS experience delivering financial targets in large, complex healthcare organisations and has held a number of senior roles including Assistant Director of Finance, Executive Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive.

One of the ways we are reacting to a changing NHS is the Better Together Programme. The programme brings together the NHS in Newark & Sherwood and Mansfield & Ashfield with Nottinghamshire County Council and other partners to transform health and social care services for future communities. Both health and social care services are working to see where they can join up more effectively, improve quality and ensure services are sustainable for the future. You can find out more about the Better Together programme on page 4.

Margaret Ashworth, for her valuable contribution to the Trust since arriving in August 2014. Margaret has developed improved budget planning processes for the forthcoming year, strong relationships with commissioners and tighter management of cash flow.

Sue Barnett, interim Director of Operations Sue Barnett joined the Trust in January. Sue has more than twenty years’ experience in the NHS and is an experienced leader with a track record of working across organisational boundaries delivering major change projects. She has held a number of roles in the acute sector both as deputy chief executive and director of operations and has often brought groups together to solve complex scenarios.

Among Sue’s achievements are turnaround, development of clinical and service strategies and successful financial planning and delivery.

A big thank you from the Board to Jacqui Tuffnell, the Trust’s previous Trust website: www.sfh-tr.nhs.uk substantive Director of Children & Young People’s website: Operations, who www.cyp.sfh-tr.nhs.uk left at the end of December to take up a post at NHS Rotherham CCG.

Jacqui joined the Trust at a challenging time and her commitment was outstanding. Her key achievements have included recruitment of high performing operational teams, sustainable referral to treatment delivery, introduction of substantive ambulatory care and discharge areas, the creation of a new strategy and vision for Newark Hospital which is currently being implemented, and expansion of thrombolysis stroke treatment to 24/7 at King’s Mill Hospital.

Care appeal £325,000 appeal launched to transform ward 52 T

he Trust has launched an appeal to raise £325,000 to transform ward 52 into a dementia friendly environment.

The changes will include an activities room and an end of life care room with facilities for families to stay with their loved ones, mood lighting and colour coding of specific areas.

WINtEr BAll raises £5,000 A winter ball held in February at the Oakham Suite in Mansfield raised £5,000 for the Trust’s Dementia Care Appeal.

The event was organised by Rebecca Saunders, Clinical Team Leader for Rapid Response Liaison Psychiatry and her team who are based at King’s Mill Hospital.

Ward 52 provides specialist care to geriatric patients with mental health issues, in particular dementia. The Trust wants to transform the ward to become more ‘dementia friendly’ and change the physical environment to counter the impairments which come with dementia.

The event was attended by 207 people including Susan Bowler, Executive Director of Nursing and Quality at the Trust and Dean Fathers, Chair of the Board for Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust The evening was a huge success and a good time was had by all!

Dementia affects over 830,000 people in the UK. Around 23 million of the UK population have a close friend or family member with dementia. As well as the huge personal cost, dementia costs the UK economy £23 billion a year, more than cancer and heart disease combined.

It is proven that making simple dementia friendly changes to the environment, such as plain flooring, using bold colours to mark toilet doors and rooms, and making simple changes to the layout of the ward can reduce the anxiety experienced by the patient whilst staying within a ward. The changes will also provide a more settling and safer environment for these patients and significantly improve the experience and quality of care for the patient and their carer.

he Better Together programme brings together the NHS in Newark and Sherwood, Mansfield and Ashfield and Nottinghamshire County Council and other partners to transform health and social care services for future populations. Both health and social care services are working to see where they can join up more effectively, improve quality and ensure services are sustainable for the future.

Over the last 18 months, the Better Together team has been engaging with patients, the public, carers and other stakeholders to develop ideas on how services can work together in a more joined up way. A series of interventions have now been designed and these are being rolled out across MidNottinghamshire.

The programme is focusing specifically on the following areas of health and social care: Elective Care - when a patient has a need for ongoing treatment, they should receive excellent care, delivered with them in mind, at an appropriate location (not always at a hospital). The Better Together programme is reviewing a number of services that are currently given in various places including in the community and in hospitals.

The programme is looking at where and which services can be delivered closer to patients’ homes (community based) or, if appropriate, in the home, and considering what services need a ‘hub of specialists’ in one place to deliver the best patient care.

Streamlining of services and how staff can refer patients directly to the right service as quickly as possible is also being reviewed.

Proactive Care - for patients with complex health needs, such as the frail and/or elderly and those who have one or more long term conditions, such as diabetes, they should be able to proactively manage their on-going care via a range of tailored services, available 24/7.

This may mean new teams of specialists who work together to provide the care and support patients and their carers need, in a place that is convenient to them (their home or GP surgery/clinic). They will help patients manage their condition and reduce the need for unnecessary hospital admissions.

Access to information and practical advice and support to help patients take better care of themselves is essential and so the creation of a new “self-care hub”, with trained advisors, will bring together all of the various information and services which are available to support patients.

A series of interventions have now been designed and these are being rolled out across Mid-Nottinghamshire Discharge Planning – Planning a patient discharge should take place as soon as they are admitted into hospital and they should be discharged as soon as medically fit. A new team of nurses and support workers will work with both the ward staff in the hospital, and nurses in the community, to ensure that as soon as a patient is feeling well again, they can go home as quickly as possible. Support, where necessary, will be given to help them keep well, remain independent and avoid readmission to hospital Urgent Care - the Better Together programme aims to make it easier for people to access the most appropriate urgent care and emergency care service for their condition,

and this needs to be cost effective.

Appropriate use of urgent care services – Improving access to GPs and raising awareness of alternatives such as pharmacies, 111 and self care will help to reduce the demand on urgent care services allowing them to focus on those who are presenting with urgent and life threatening conditions. .

Single Front Door - Creating a ‘single front door’ at King’s Mill Hospital for urgent care and emergency care will allow quicker assessment and transfer to the right place according to the needs of the patient..

Mid-Nottinghamshire Care Navigator - Creation of a ‘clinical navigator’ will allow all health and social staff to telephone and make an enquiry about what services are available to support patients across MidNottinghamshire. This will ensure patients are getting the care they need in the best place as quickly as possible. The details of the Mid-Nottinghamshire Care Navigator service are being finalised but launch of the service is expected in December 2015.

Crisis response – a crisis response team will look at the needs of the patient and provide appropriate support people in their own home so that they don’t need to go to hospital. This will ensure that people can live independently in their own homes with the most appropriate care.

They were both separately shortlisted for the NHS Development Champion of the Year category.

For the seventh year running, local people are being invited to submit their nominations for the prestigious Sherwood Forest Hospitals “People’s Award” to recognise an outstanding hospital employee who provides exceptional service above and beyond the call of duty. Any Trust employee can be nominated and nominations can be made by anyone in the communities served by King’s Mill, Newark and Mansfield Community hospitals.

Amanda Solomon has worked at the Trust for five and half years. She is Department Sister for the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) and started her career in cardiology before moving onto the EAU. Amanda developed an EAU specific induction package, which includes detailed training, buddy support and planned review meetings to support new staff to develop their skills and promote an open and honest relationship with senior members of the team.

“I was very pleased and surprised to be nominated” said Amanda. “It would have been the icing on the cake to win, but the best thing for me is seeing hard work being recognised and the fact that I’ve had 100% support from my team. This is why I believe we have been so successful. I love my job!”

Celebrating Nurses Week The Trust is planning a variety of events to recognise the invaluable role of nursing and midwifery staff during its ‘Celebrating Nurses Week’ 11-15 May, which also encompasses International Nurses’ Day on 12 May. Look out for details within the hospitals and in the local press.

Return of the Great Nursing Bake-Off

Get your icing bags at the ready, the countdown is on to this year’s Sherwood Forest Hospitals ‘Great Nursing Bake-Off’!

It’s time for nursing staff to design, bake and decorate their very own nursing inspired cakes, to be judged on 15 May by the Chairman and Chief Executive.

Once the lucky winner has been announced, all cakes will be distributed to nurses across the Trust’s hospital sites.

Trust Chairman Sean Lyons, said: “Our staff work tirelessly to deliver the highest quality care. They carry out their work with dedication, often in hugely challenging circumstances. This award is a chance for our patients to say thank you to staff members and teams who have shown exceptional compassion, kindness and skill.”

“Market-ing” Newark services

Nurses and healthcare workers from Newark Hospital spent three days during December in Newark market place promoting the hospital to over 1,000 people.

Members of the public spoke with staff and governors about the services available at the hospital and wrote comments about what Newark Hospital meant to them on

large posters.

It was part of a drive to encourage more residents to choose Newark Hospital when they are referred onwards by their GP. Hayley Allison, Assistant Director of Operations said: “We’re working hard to increase public understanding of what services are available at the hospital and

encourage local people to choose Newark Hospital when they talk to their GP or use the Healthcare Gateway system.

“If you are a patient living locally there’s no reason why you can’t have your preoperative and outpatient appointments, and diagnostic services performed at Newark Hospital.”

Reader letters in the Newark Advertiser Smooth treatment Being aware of the bad press the NHS has been receiving has made me want to write about the treatment I received at Newark Hospital.

After a referral from my GP for me to see a consultant, I was given an appointment within a month. After seeing the consultant I was told I needed an appointment at the endoscopy department and this was made for six days later on 6 December.

The efficiency of the process from the start was 100%. I would like to thank the nurses and doctors for making the procedure less stressful than I thought it would be. We would be lost without the services of Newark Hospital and must not let them be reduced.

Proud of Newark Hospital and its staff My husband recently hurt his foot at work and we were advised by my mum to go to Newark Hospital. We received a warm welcome at the reception and went to the waiting area and didn’t have to wait long.

We were told that he had probably broken his foot and he was bandaged up and given medication and went back the next day, which was followed through with visits to our GP. I feel very proud to have Newark Hospital and wanted to share my views.

Caring about people I have just had a minor operation in Newark Hospital. All the staff were nice and pleasant, and made me welcome.

The hospital is always very clean and well looked after. On leaving I was asked if I wanted a wheelchair, which I declined as I could walk with my husband. When I was in a major city centre hospital for a six-hour operation on my back, I was told when leaving that they didn’t have wheelchairs in the department . My husband, who has heart problems and a pacemaker, had to chase round the hospital for one as I had trouble walking – and that was a major hospital. Please make Newark our main hospital as they all care about people.

Seven Day Therapy Services P

atients are benefitting from increased therapy services at Newark Hospital. The hospital has introduced a trial to increase therapy services from Monday to Friday to also cover weekends, thanks to investment from NHS Newark and Sherwood Clinical Commissioning Group.

The trial, which started on Saturday 17 January, uses existing therapy staff at the hospital to cover the weekends and has so far provided over 240 additional hours and over 40 new patients have received treatment.

The trial has been paid for using monies provided by NHS England as part of their Winter Resilience Fund after a successful bid by NHS Newark and Sherwood. The Winter Resilience Fund was provided for projects that would help ease winter pressures and promote earlier discharge during the busiest season for the NHS. The trial has allowed quicker access and more intensive therapy and has enabled patients to be discharged from hospital.

Two patients who attended the Minor Injuries Unit also avoided being admitted to a ward after receiving treatment from the therapy team over a weekend.

Fran Platts, Therapy Operational Manager said: “The overall benefit to patients at Newark Hospital has been more than we could ever have hoped for, with faster assessment response times, more intensive rehabilitation and more opportunities to speak to and work with patients and their families.”

Feedback from patients and their relatives has been very positive, one relative commented: “My mother arrived on Saturday and she was seen by the physiotherapy and occupational therapy team as soon as she arrived on Sconce Ward. It is an unbelievable service.”

Robert Ferris-Rogers, Director of Membership, Engagement and Innovation at NHS Newark and Sherwood said: “The trial is clearly demonstrating the benefits to patients of a seven day therapy service as patients are able to return home more quickly.

“We are working closely with the Trust to use the findings from this trial to introduce seven day therapy services permanently in the hospital’s Fernwood Community Unit in the future. Our aim is for patients to receive the same high quality care every day”.

Seven day therapy services so far: • 240 additional hours of service • 40 new patients assessed over the weekends • 2 patients in MIU received therapy treatment which avoided unnecessary admission to hospital • 18 patients received intensive treatment to allow them to be discharged home earlier • 181 additional follow up therapy sessions provided for patients.

In memory of Belinda Thank you to the Woolley family, who donated a huge £1,300 in memory of relative Belinda Woolley.

Their generous donation was divided three ways; £500 to Ward 31, £400 to the Respiratory Department and £400 to Macmillan Cancer Support. Belinda had been a patient at King’s Mill Hospital on a number of occasions and the family wished to show their appreciation of the care and treatment she had received across the departments.

nOrOVirus At the end of last year a number of wards across the Trust were affected by the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus. The virus is very common and the spread of infection is easiest in places where groups of people are in close proximity for reasonable amounts of time such as residential homes, schools, hospitals and workplaces.

More than 3,300 staff have lined up for their flu jab in recent months, with more than 70% of frontline staff being vaccinated. Every year the flu vaccination is offered to NHS staff as a way to reduce the risk of them 8 SFHnews | Spring 2015

contracting the virus and transmitting it to patients.

Frontline healthcare workers are more likely to be exposed to the flu virus, particularly during winter months when some patients will be infected. It has been estimated that up to one in four healthcare workers may become infected with flu during a mild season - a much higher incidence than expected in the general population.

On those occasions we asked people not to visit patients on the affected wards unless absolutely necessary. It is unfortunate that we need to take these measures but we wish to protect our patients by restricting the chances of people spreading this infection.

We also want to remind everyone about the importance of good hand hygiene to reduce the spread of Norovirus both in and out of the hospital.”

he Trust has seen an increase in the number of people presenting in the Emergency Department (ED) who are seriously ill and require admission. When all wards are already full, this creates a bottleneck as new patients wait for a bed.

On deCk Amanda Sullivan, Chief Officer for NHS Mansfield and Ashfield and Newark and Sherwood clinical commissioning groups The lighter evenings and milder weather signal relief that winter is finally drawing to a close but pressures on urgent care services remain ever present.

It is heartening to see a real change in the team working and spirit of collaboration across different providers. Community teams are working inside hospitals and GP presence in PC24 has been increased, so that it isn’t just an out-ofhours service. These enable new understandings about how others work, so we can all work together more for the benefit of patients.

Commissioners and partners have been in daily discussions to free up beds; to speed up discharge of patients who don’t need acute care and GPs are identifying more patients at risk of being admitted to hospital so they get the care they need before a crisis hits.

Without the collaboration and resilience of our health colleagues, these pressures would be impossible to manage. There is still more to do as we get used to working more closely together across different organisations.

Once teams fully understand how others work and how the whole system can best work together, admission prevention and clinical flows will improve. New ways of working are already beginning to transform urgent care. Transfer to assess is one example of this.

Drug and alcohol nurses Melanie Hall and Catherine Whetton were on hand to advise students about drug and alcohol misuse

College Health Event T he Trust held a two-day health event during February for students at Vision West Nottinghamshire College.

Students at the college’s construction and building campus and the Engineering Innovation Centre, both based in Ashfield, were able to get advice from hospital professionals about a range of health matters while also signing up to become members of the Trust.

Students were able to speak to nurse advisors about issues such as sexual health and the dangers of drug use.

Those who visited the information stands were able to get to grips with the ‘beer goggles’, which gives the wearer the sensation of being under the influence of alcohol.

Students were challenged to walk through a series of obstacles to see how their judgement was impaired by drinking.

Ashfield and Mansfield public governors were available to give the students further information about the benefits of becoming a member of the Trust.

seTTing The sTandard for ED streaming

K

ing’s Mill’s Emergency Department (ED) is reaping the benefits of a streaming programme introduced five years ago, which has helped staff manage an unprecedented number of patients. This more effective way of working together enables the ED nurses to see and stream patients far more quickly, efficiently and safely.

The programme has been so successful that it is currently featured in the prestigious International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing, and Sherwood Forest Hospitals has received enquiries from several other trusts who wish to adopt this best practice model.

The pilot took place between September 2009 and May 2010 and the number of patients seen within 15 minutes increased from 500 before the new model, to an impressive 1500. It was adopted as part of the Trust’s Standard Operating Procedures, and just one year later, by May 2011, well over 3,000 were being seen within 15 minutes.

New ways of working can often prove to be unsustainable over time, but the major benefits of this new programme have been maintained over the last five years.

Previously patients would wait in one queue for long periods of time, sometimes up to two hours, to see one triage nurse for a detailed 15-20 min initial assessment. Two minors nurses would then take bloods and perform

ECGs if required, before the patients waited again to be treated.

Under the new streaming process, a streaming nurse and minors nurse now work together to perform very brief triage assessments in 2-5 minutes, while a healthcare assistant deals with blood tests and ECGs. Patients are then fast tracked straight to the most appropriate place for their treatment – ie; the resus area, majors area, minors area to be treated and discharged by an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) or to Primary Care 24.

Many of these patients are also now self-presenting (making their own way to the hospital rather than arriving by ambulance), including heart attack, stroke, sepsis and trauma patients – all of whom require immediate assessment and treatment.

Trust awarded UNICEF Baby Friendly Award

S

herwood Forest Hospitals is the latest UK healthcare facility to win international recognition from the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) by being awarded the prestigious Baby Friendly Award in November 2014.

The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies. In the UK, the initiative works with UK public services to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and to strengthen all mother and baby and family relationships. The award is given to

hospitals after an assessment by a UNICEF team has shown that recognised best practice standards are in place.

Jo Lincoln, Infant Feeding Co-ordinator at the Trust, said: “We are thrilled to have achieved the UNICEF Baby Friendly Award.

This is recognition of the hard work being undertaken by staff to encourage and support new mums with breast feeding their baby. This work helps to increase breast feeding rates and improve care for all new mothers and babies at the Trust.

“The health benefits of breast feeding for

both mum and baby are widely known. For baby these include early protection against a wide range of serious illnesses including gastroenteritis and respiratory infections in infancy, as well as asthma, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later life. For mums, it can also reduce their risk of developing some cancers.

Sue Ashmore, Baby Friendly Initiative Programme Director, said: “We are delighted that Sherwood Forest Hospitals has achieved full Baby Friendly status. Surveys show us that most mothers want to breastfeed but don’t always get the support they need. New mothers can be confident that midwives at the Trust will provide full support and high standards of care.”

for innovative scheme T

he Trust has won a prestigious Green Apple Environmental Best Practice award in recognition of its ground-breaking geothermal lake pump scheme.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals beat 500 nominees last November with their acclaimed eco-friendly scheme, which harnesses energy from nearby King’s Mill reservoir to power its air conditioning and heating, producing up to 5.4MW of energy – which is enough power to run some electric trains!

The scheme works by connecting 42 heating and cooling pumps from King’s Mill Hospital to a network of pipes submerged in adjacent King’s Mill reservoir.

These pumps circulate a mixture of water and antifreeze around a ground loop (circular network of pipes) which absorbs heat from the reservoir bed then passes it through a heat exchanger. The fluid is then used to

regulate the temperature of the buildings at King’s Mill Hospital.

It is an innovative example of engineering that encouraged the Trust and its partners to think outside the box The benefits of the geothermal lake pump scheme include lower fuel bills and the potential to generate income. The scheme also lowers the Trust’s carbon footprint, requires little maintenance and is an alternative to oil and gas.

Ben Widdowson, Head of Estates and Facilities at the Trust said: “The Trust is

committed to reducing carbon emissions to secure a safer environment for future generations and we are delighted to win this award.

“Changing King’s Mill Hospital’s conventional cooling system was a good start because it consumed a significant amount of energy, and we are grateful to the Department of Health Energy for giving us the opportunity to set up the geothermal lake pump scheme in 2008.

“It is an innovative example of engineering that encouraged the Trust and its partners to think outside the box and provide a longterm solution that would change the way we use energy.”

“It has always been on the Trust’s agenda to seek innovative solutions to meet the targets set by the Climate Act 2008, which pledged the NHS would reduce its carbon emissions by 80 per cent from the 1990 baseline by 2050.”

Improving for excellence T

he frail elderly represent a relatively small proportion of all patients attending accident and emergency departments, but they are much more likely to be admitted following assessment and approximately 60-70% of all in-patient beds are occupied by the elderly. They are a vulnerable group and are more likely to suffer adverse events in hospital such as falls, confusion and hospital acquired infections. They also have a longer length of stay and are more likely to be discharged to long-term care (residential and nursing homes). It is really important therefore to get the care for this group of patients right from the outset in order to improve outcomes. This represents quite a challenge!

In August 2014, Sherwood Forest Hospitals alongside 12 other pilot sites, was selected to become part of a national collaborative.

The goal of the collaborative was to improve the quality and consistency of care for frail patients entering acute hospital settings.

This is a real achievement for the Trust and an opportunity to be at the forefront of an important piece of work.

The collaborative was funded by a Health Foundation ‘Closing the Gap in Patient Safety’ award showing that the NHS is making care for older people a priority. After months of hard work from the project team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Frailsafe was developed.

• Pressure ulcers: Prevention and treatment

Frailsafe is a ‘check and challenge’ checklist, for frail people entering acute hospital care. The checklist will be used to trigger an interaction between clinical staff and other members of the healthcare team on the Emergency Admissions Unit (EAU) to ensure that all frail patients receive a high level of care. The checklist is based around 7 areas of potential harm

Frailsafe ensures a robust and structured assessment of all these areas for all frail people on admission to Hospital.

The Frailsafe project identified the most common and highest impact issues which can result in harm to patients in the first few days of acute care.

• Confusion: Assessing mental state, including identifying delirium and underlying dementia. Ensuring people have their mental state assessed on admission to ensure they receive the appropriate care.

• Equipment related: Eg bed rail assessments, appropriate use of cannulas • Reduced mobility: anyone who requires a mobility aid will be assessed.

• Falls: Risk assessment on admission

• Poor advanced care planning: Ensuring patients’ wishes are known • Medication: Avoiding adverse drug reactions

A multidisciplinary team established within the Trust is in the process of embedding the new checklist into routine clinical practice on the emergency admissions unit (EAU). It is hoped that the use of the checklist will lead to measurable outcomes and improvement in the care of our elderly and frail patients.

The initial project runs until July 2015, before being rolled out nationally, building on the success of the initial 12 pilot sites. By July 2016, it is envisaged that all acute trusts will have a version of the Frailsafe ‘check and challenge’ in place. Sherwood Forest Hospitals and the Frailsafe team are very excited about the future. The Trust is proud to be at the forefront of change within the NHS, leading to better care for patients and embedding its basic principle of ‘Quality for all’.

The first phase of the programme, saving an estimated £40,000 per annum, took place last year. Departments across the Trust agreed to the removal of 82 individual desktop printers where multi-function devices are now available - providing printer efficiencies with the added benefit of improved technology.

Phase two of the programme is now in progress, including wards and clinics, where approximately 520 desktop printers remain.

Care is being taken to ensure that clinical confidentiality is not compromised under the new printing arrangements.

A touch of charm for mums Pregnant women being cared for at King’s Mill are now benefitting from improved surroundings following a generous cash donation from a local wedding planner.

Kelly Wilson, who runs Touch of Charm in Mansfield, donated £1,000 to support the refurbishment of a quiet room facility in the antenatal suite at the hospital. The funds, which Kelly raised by organising a charity night, have been used to buy comfortable leather furniture and soft furnishings.

The new room will be much appreciated by expectant mums who often need somewhere quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the ward, to talk privately with staff about how their pregnancy is progressing.

Our patients said: “All the doctors, nurses, carers, and hostesses, made my wife’s stay in the Maternity ward exceptionally comfortable, and we welcomed our son Joshua Mark into the world with all of their respectful and professional care.

“Last week, Ward 36 staff were completely caring for my elderly frail mother, who had fallen at home. The staff helped her to eat her meals, assisted her to have a bath, and generally aided her recovery. I was very impressed with the standard and level of care we received.”

The staff in the Phlebotomy Department are always kind and courteous, and have a good rapport with my son James. Each and every time we’ve been nothing has been too much trouble for any of the staff. Nurses’ reunion A grand reunion for nurses who went to the Mansfield and Worksop School of Nursing and Midwifery is being organised. The event is not year specific and everyone is welcome to attend. The cost is £15 a ticket and profits will be in aid of the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.

The event will be held at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex on Saturday 18 April, 7.30pm-12am. There will be a hot and cold buffet, raffles and a disco.

At the Remembrance Sunday Service in Newark, he and his colleagues were on hand when a Navy Veteran and Chairman of the Newark Branch of the Royal Naval Association suffered a heart attack.

Pete and the team’s speedy first aid saved the man’s life.”

I mentioned that they might incorporate something else into the board and within hours Bev had done all the necessary work to include it. Her commitment to the ward and the team is admirable.

The quietest and most unassuming of characters, Mel is a silent star and has been for over 33 years. I have a team of 50 operational staff with high achievers like the Newark supervisor Carl Turnbull and a newly promoted estates officer Ian Spencer but Mel is a rock within. I have worked with him for six years and have always relied on the fact that he will complete any task he accepts.

The effort he puts in has a positive effect throughout the department and hospital. I could ask any member of the team and they would all say something positive without prompting. I could not recommend anyone in the department any higher.”
