Message from new Interim Chief Executive This message must start with a big thank you to all our staff for their hard work, caring and commitment throughout 2015. Thanks too to those who will be working this festive season.

My gratitude goes also to local GPs, social workers, community workers and of course the Ambulance and Emergency Services, who all display real dedication and are a clear reflection of what the NHS means to so many people.

We have had a number of ups and downs this year, but the Trust Board and senior management are fiercely proud of all of our staff who continue to provide a great service to local patients.

I know we have made a number of great achievements this year including the introduction of the Emergency Flow Programme, which has enabled people to be treated and discharged much quicker.

Our average length of stay has reduced from 8.3 days to 7.25 days, putting us into the top 25% of organisations in the country for achieving that target.

Another prime example of significant improvements comes from the Stroke Service at King’s Mill Hospital, which has been nationally recognised by the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP) for the outstanding care provided to their patients.

Within a year the team have improved their rating from a grade D to a grade B. Looking ahead to 2016, I see a year of challenges and changes across the Trust, as we work to develop and improve our services. I have confidence that the Trust, our members, staff and partners have the strength and flexibility to meet these challenges and deliver improved care for patients.

SFH News goes electronic From February 2016 your SFH News will be produced monthly and issued electronically.

The newsletter is a valuable tool to ensure all staff and members are aware of the latest innovations and changes we are making in our hospitals to improve safety and patient outcome.

A more frequent newsletter helps us keep you up to date with changing practices and new service developments, and helps us celebrate our successes and involve you in exciting and helpful events.

These events will take place in various Trust locations and on different dates. We hope this will give everyone the opportunity to attend and gain some fantastic knowledge and skills, as well finding out about the great work being done by other

members and staff teams We also want your feedback. Your opinions matter to us. A monthly newsletter will enable us to respond quicker to your questions and suggestions about SFH News, helping you to get the most out of your newsletter. We want SFH News to be relevant to all readers and meet your needs as a member.

Success for the Emergency Flow Programme SFHFT Average length of stay drops to 7.25 days Trust is top quartile for meeting the Emergency Care Standard One of the great successes in the organisation this year has been the Emergency Flow programme and it is something the whole of Sherwood Forest Hospitals can be proud of.

Since March this year, the Trust has seen remarkable improvements in all aspects of care provided along the ‘emergency flow pathway’. This work is based on national best practice, recognising that people who are older and frail should be home as soon as they are medically able to be.

At the beginning of last winter we had not met the 4 hour Emergency Care standard for 18 months. Since the emergency flow Trust website: www.sfh-tr.nhs.uk programme has been put in place, the Trust has Children & Young People’s website: www.cyp.sfh-tr.nhs.uk regularly achieved the 4 hour target within the Emergency Department; placing us in the top 25%

of organisations in the country for achieving that target.

This time last year the Trust were almost permanently on black alert, meaning we had to open extra beds in all available ward areas. We had almost 300 patients remaining as inpatients for over 14 days. For an organisation of this size it should have around 130 patients.

Following our work on patient flow, we now average 190 patients of those admitted, staying with us more than 14 days. More patients are also being treated in, and discharged from, the Clinical Decisions Unit, meaning they do not get admitted at all and can go home.

As a result of all this great work, the average length of stay has reduced from 8.3 days to 7.25 days.

This level of success clearly demonstrates that improvements are well within the Trust’s grasp.

International Infection Prevention and Control Week is held during the third week in October. It aims to highlight and promote the work that healthcare staff do to prevent healthcare associated infections in order to keep patients, staff and visitors safe.

The Trust aims to make great strides in reducing infections, including:

Healthcare-associated infections can affect patients in hospitals or other healthcare facilities. The term covers a wide range of infections; the most well-known include those caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C. diff.).

• Daily cleaning solutions have been changed to compounds which are proven to be active against C. diff

• The introduction of an improved hydrogen peroxide vapour system, which gives a higher level of decontamination than manual cleaning alone

• Ensuring each ward has a thorough and regular deep clean, including every wall, floor and surface

This year the Trust’s awareness week focussed on decontamination. Specialist nurses were on hand throughout the week at King’s Mill Hospital, showcasing the innovations and improvements they have put in place to control the spread of infection.

CQC update The Care Quality Commission (CQC) findings were published in October; rating the Trust as Inadequate. The findings were a real blow to us, not least because the Trust will remain in Special Measures until we can demonstrate we have really improved the quality of care we provide.

We are really sorry for letting our patients, their families and carers down in this way.

Since October the Trust has been working hard to develop programmes which will really transform the way the organisation operates.

We recognise that we need to be more patient centred and know we must refocus on quality and performance. We also understand that we have significant financial pressures to deal with.

In order for us to deliver the efficiencies and improvements we need to make, all of these considerations, priorities and work plans must now be joined up into a focussed transformation approach.

We will bring you updates on our progress over the coming months, and across the Trust you will start to see evidence of our new approach – watch this space. and water or use antibacterial hand gel upon entering hospital. Protecting staff and patients Sherwood Forest Hospitals has joined the largest ever NHS staff vaccination campaign, with a programme of local activity to protect its staff and patients from flu.

The Trust aims to make great strides in reducing the spread of flu this season by vaccinating as many frontline staff as possible. Last season we successfully vaccinated over 70 per cent of hospital staff against flu, making it one of the best performing Trusts in the country.

Last year flu led to 107 deaths In the UK and affected thousands more lives.

Annual flu-related admissions into intensive care or high dependency units across the country also increased.

Rebecca Garner, Senior Nurse in the Occupational Health Department, said: “Sherwood Forest Hospitals takes patient safety very seriously, working hard to encourage nurses, doctors and other frontline staff to get vaccinated against catching flu or passing the virus on to patients. The vaccinations will be provided free of charge at a range of times and locations to suit all frontline staff, including night workers and those out in the community.”

The Trust’s consistent and successful efforts to vaccinate as many staff as possible each year, has been recognised

by Public Health East Midlands, who have recommended that other Trusts around the country follow this best practice.

Rebecca added: “Last season’s excellent

Over 40 nurses from all areas of the Trust have volunteered their time to be trained in administering the vaccination, which will lead to a strong taskforce proactively vaccinating colleagues within clinical areas, and in numerous ‘grab a jab’ clinics over the three hospital sites.

Dean Royles, Chief Executive of the NHS Employers organisation, said: “Flu targets people who are weakened and

vulnerable, so it’s crucial the NHS does everything it can to keep the virus away from patients. By having our vaccinations we protect ourselves, our patients, our friends and our families.

“At the moment about half of all NHS staff is vaccinated. It takes time to change the habits of a vast workforce and it’s important to remember that vaccinations are entirely voluntary - but 108,000 more staff are getting vaccinated, compared to only two years ago. Support from organisations like Sherwood Forest Hospitals and their staff, means we can aim even higher this year.”

New Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultants Welcome to Amit Bidwai, Joby John and Sachin Badhe, who have recently joined the Trust.

Mr Bidwai’s specialist interest is in shoulder and elbow surgery. He underwent specialist fellowship training in three centres of excellence in Liverpool, Wrightington and South Tees Hospitals and, since arriving at SFH, has become the Principal Investigator for the UKFROST study - a multicentre trial to determine the optimum treatment for frozen shoulder. In addition, he chairs the Pre-op and Surgery Group for the fractured neck of femur pathway improvement programme and is the clinical representative on the Newark Healthy Communities Partnership Group.

Mr John is a lower limb surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery. After attending medical school in India and training in orthopaedics in the Nottingham rotation, he underwent further training in lower limb reconstruction in Canada and 4 SFHnews | Winter 2015/16

Mr John has a great interest in research, for which he has won numerous awards, and completed a PhD on gait analysis in medial unicompartmental knee replacements during his training.

Mr Badhe’s specialist interest is in hip and knee surgery. After completing his training in the region, he underwent specialist fellowship training in Nottingham, Derby and Auckland, New Zealand.

Promoting active ageing Caring staff at Mansfield Community Hospital promoted the importance of active aging to mark Older People’s Day on Thursday 1 October 2015.

Coinciding with the UN International Day of Older Persons, Older People’s Day was designed to celebrate the contribution of older people in society. On Oakham and Lindhurst wards, Physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses held afternoon events, including exercise classes, craft sessions, afternoon tea and a quiz for inpatients and previous patients.

Fran Platts - Therapy Operational Manager for Community Services at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “People are living longer, 23% of the UK will be aged 65 or over by 2035. Therapists play a major role in keeping people active and independent as they get older, encouraging a proactive approach to aging and self-care to minimise complications, for example falls, joint stiffness, memory loss and anxieties.

Fran added: “It’s never too late to increase muscle strength, maintain bone density and improve balance. Taking steps now to achieve these goals can help prevent aches and pains, increase energy levels and reduce anxieties around falling. This can also help with better managing conditions like heart disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, stroke and mental illness.

Santa & friends pay a visit Delighted young patients were thrilled to meet Santa as he paid an early visit to the children’s ward at Kings Mill Hospital in November, on his way to switch on the Mansfield’s Christmas lights.

Paddington Bear was also on hand to help him distribute selection boxes, kindly donated by Asda in Forest Town.

Mansfield Town FC’s mascot Sammy the Stag, and Buzz - the Four Seasons Shopping Centre mascot were also present to help Santa spread some cheer.

Many thanks to the Four Seasons Shopping Centre for arranging this very special visit.

“We were delighted to support Older People’s Day. Each individual has an important role to play in helping themselves live longer and live well and we hope that the day has helped to raise awareness about healthy aging.”

“There are a number of simple steps that everyone can take to reduce their risk of falls, such as doing basic exercises, keeping active, wearing appropriate footwear and being aware of their environment. It is never too early to start and prevention is possible; falls are not an inevitable part of ageing.”

Volunteers receive recognition Volunteers who give their time to make patients’ stay in the Trust’s hospitals more comfortable have been awarded for their efforts.

The sterling work completed by 84 volunteers was recognised at Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ Chairman’s Awards Ceremony on 6 October at Newark Town Hall and 22 October at the Oakham Suite in Mansfield The awards, in the form of long service medals and certificates, are in appreciation of service ranging from five to fifty years and were presented to each volunteer by Trust Chairman Sean Lyons.

Occupational therapy to aid independence Sherwood Forest Hospitals supported National Occupational Therapy Week on 2-8 November 2015 by holding information stands to spread the word about the importance of occupational therapy.

Therapists were on hand at King’s Mill Hospital during the week, to give members of the public, visitors and other health professional’s advice and information about how occupational therapy can help people on their road to recovery after an illness or disability and make a positive impact on their lives.

Catherine Dopson, Therapy Team Leader for the Trust, said: “Sometimes illness, accident or disability, getting older or a change in personal circumstances may mean it becomes

increasingly difficult to do some or all of the normal tasks in life. Occupational therapists help people of all ages to find ways to carry out the occupations that are important to them. For example, managing to dress following a stroke or enabling someone with depression to reconnect with activities that they used to do.”

Therapists can work in a variety of settings including hospitals and nursing homes as well as people’s own homes, schools, housing departments and prisons.

Catherine added: “By breaking down barriers which delay individuals in their everyday activities and restoring wellbeing and independence, people will have the confidence to live the full life they deserve.”

Praising the invaluable work of the volunteers, Chairman Sean Lyons said: “It is a privilege and honour to once again present awards to the exceptional teams of volunteers working in our hospitals. The support they provide enables staff to deliver a high quality patient service. I am always amazed when I visit the hospitals at the variety of services in which volunteers are involved – services which are continuing to develop”.

Volunteers honoured from Newark Hospital included five people celebrating 20 years’ service - Marian Creasey, Ida Mills, Joyce Whitworth, Shirley Flisher and Joyce Galbraith.

Barbara Read was commemorated for an outstanding 50 years of service to King’s Mill Hospital, together with Rita Stevens who celebrated 30 years, Andrew Barlow 25 years and Brian Shepherd 20 years.

Council of Governors Meetings The Council of Governors meets four times a year. Members of the public are welcome to attend and listen to the discussions. Coping with baby loss grief Sherwood Forest Hospitals offered support to bereaved families to help cope with baby death during Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Each year between 9-15 October, Baby Loss Awareness Week commemorates the all too brief lives of babies lost, and gives bereaved parents, families, friends and those involved in their care a crucial opportunity to talk openly about the subject of losing a baby.

Melanie Butcher, Midwife at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We hope that by acknowledging Baby Loss Awareness Week, we can help families feel less isolated by the loss of their baby, raising awareness of the additional services that we as an organisation provide.”

‘Wave of Light’, which is recognised as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day across the world. Starting at 7pm on the 15 October, candles were lit privately or with friends; burning for one hour, there was a continuous wave of light across the whole world.

Melanie added: “Providing help and understanding to bereaved parents, their families and their friends is extremely important to us.

“If anyone has been affected by baby loss and would like further support, please contact our contacts opposite.”

Information stands were situated in the King’s Treatment Centre at King’s Mill Hospital on 14 and 15 October 2015. Whether families were affected by the devastation of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, babies being born asleep or babies who have lived for only hours, days or weeks, health professionals were on hand to signpost them to charities that can provide additional support.

2015 Staff Excellence Awards The very worthy winners of the 2015 Staff Excellence Awards were announced during our presentation dinner at the John Fretwell Centre; generously sponsored once again by some of the organisations that we work closely with.

It is extremely important that we take time to recognise and celebrate the fantastic achievements of all staff, particularly those who consistently go ‘the extra mile’ to improve the patient, carer and staff experience. Dementia Care Appeal & Hugely anticipated work commenced on 9 November at Kings Mill Hospital on the redevelopment of Ward 52, an acute Geriatric Medical Ward.

The redevelopment project, part of the Trusts on-going Dementia Care Appeal, is set to turn Ward 52 into a unit that is dementia friendly.

Simple modifications to the ward environment and changes to the staffing model are designed to promote the health and wellbeing of patients that suffer from mental health conditions such as dementia, while they are undergoing hospital treatment.

Here are some of the proposed changes to the ward and the benefits behind them; Flooring By making a simple change to the colour it significantly reduces the likelihood that a patient will trip or fall. Patients with dementia often associate changes in colour or bright colours on the floor as a step or an obstacle. For an elderly patient that is perhaps already disorientated or confused, this can cause a fall.

Use of bright / bold colours Use of bright and bold colours on the walls and furniture, helps patients to differentiate areas; for example a patient with dementia, bright colours can help them to identify which room is theirs, helping them to locate toilets and living areas easier.

Mood Lighting Mood lighting installed throughout the ward can help to calm and stimulate patients, tailored to the individual and dependant on their mood and needs.

Activities / Sensory Room Conversion of a single room and en-suite into an Activities / Sensory room. A specialist computer and projector allows for photos, videos, songs relevant to the patient to be uploaded, played and projected onto the walls

of the room. This helps to provide a calming environment and can be used to interact with and stimulate patients.

Memory Wall Ward 52 will feature a memory wall which captures key local historical items and events over the past 80 years which will also help to generate memories and positive reactions from patients.

Cinema Area Installation of a cinema area in which patients can relax and watch films.

Reminiscing is integral for a dementia patient and use of old films, songs, historical events and pictures helps to generate memories and positive reactions.

All of these changes have been proven under extensive research by the Kings Fund to be effective in improving the mood, orientation and care of patients in an acute setting. The Dementia Care Appeal was initiated in 2014, since then a whole host of fundraising events have taken place to raise those all-important funds for the appeal.

Staff from Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust have worked tirelessly, along with patients, relatives, The League of Friends and an army of volunteers to raise an astounding £92,000 towards the Dementia Care Appeal.

Events that have taken place over the past year include; Alzheimer Bus and Cake Stall On 11 November the Alzheimer Bus came to Kings Mill Hospital. The bus generates awareness and provides invaluable mobile support and signposting service for patients and carers of those with the condition. The fundraising team also provided cake stalls on the day which as always, proved a huge success and raised £848.20.

Vintage Tea Party On 3 September, staff, patients and visitors were asked to take a step back in time for the 1940s Vintage Tea Party. The event which provided a traditional afternoon tea and music was organised by the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Psychiatry Liaison Team with SFHFT and raised a massive £1,476.

Memory Walk A number of staff members took part in a memory walk on 3 October to raise funds for the Dementia Care Appeal. The team successfully raised £726.00.

Dementia Care Appeal Ball Earlier in 2015 a Dementia Care Appeal Ball was held which saw everyone dress up and party the night away! This event successfully raised £5,000 and was so successful a further ball has been arranged to close the Dementia Care Appeal early in the New Year.

Staff, volunteers and patients continue to fundraise through raffles and cake stalls.

A Christmas Fayre has been organised for 24 November and Christmas Carols will be performed by local school children in the main entrance of King’s Mill Hospital from 8 December to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.

As well as the fundraising events we have had many donations, one was from a long standing volunteer Barbara Read who donated £1,075 in lieu of gifts on her 90th birthday. Thank you Barbara! We have also had two generous donations from our volunteers within the hospital and Daffodil Café which totalled £50,000!

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped so far, as we continue to drive the Dementia appeal forwards.

Ward 52 Redevelopment

Although the Dementia Care Appeal has already generated a significant amount of money, a further £233,000 is needed to achieve the appeals overall target of £325,000. Donations are welcome from staff in the form of unwanted gifts, books, dvds as these can be sold on one of the volunteer stalls within the hospital. Direct contributions to the fund can be made by contacting the community involvement team on 01623 676011. All donations and contributions are welcome and any money raised will go directly towards the Dementia Care Appeal.

As part of the project we also want to rename the ward to something that is more appealing and meaningful.

Therefore suggestions for the new name are welcomed from staff, relatives and patients. Suggestions are to be addressed to the Community Involvement Team at King’s Mill Hospital; they can also be emailed to voluntary.services@sfh-tr.nhs. uk. Please ensure these are returned by 8 January 2016, along with your name and contact details. These will then be collated and shortlisted, before being entered into a draw. The winning name will be selected as part of the ward’s grand opening which is expected to take place week commencing 18 January 2016.

The hand that went for X-Ray was severely affected by the stroke. Helen saw the patient quickly and without any hesitation. Helen was kind and quietly spoken to the patient, spending considerable time attempting to get the hand in the right position. At no point did she try and rush anything or hurry the patient along.

“Helen would also not let us leave until she had spoken to the consulting radiographer, in order to get a diagnosis on the patient’s hand for appropriate treatment.

“I know this is how we should all be as
