Bassetlaw patients to benefit from £3.5m investment W e’ve announced our plans to substantially improve facilities at Bassetlaw Hospital as part of a major development plan.

The plans will integrate the hospital’s key services into the main hospital buildings, with £3.5m being invested in additional, purpose built accommodation.

This will relocate and modernise a number of key services including diabetes outpatients, training and education, mortuary, medical records, linen stores and estates.

These services currently occupy lower quality accommodation lower down the site, with the plans announced also proposing the sale of this surplus NHS land, in part to fund the new developments.

‘Feeling under the weather’ this winter Every winter the NHS sees a huge rise in numbers of emergency admissions to hospital.

Older people often don’t seek advice for wheezes, coughs and sneezes because they don’t think it’s serious enough and they don’t want to waste anyone’s time. That’s why the NHS is running a national campaign to encourage the over 60s to seek advice early from their local pharmacist if they are ‘feeling under the weather’.

Pharmacies have long opening hours, no appointment is necessary and many have private consultation areas, so they’re a good first port of call.

Trust expands regional screening work

ast year, Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals started delivering Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening to older men across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. Since last July’s launch, the programme has been a great success, reaching national highs for the number of men referring on to the programme.

In a further boost for the Trust’s reputation, it has also secured the contract for promoting Breast Cancer screening across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and hopes to deliver similarly impressive results.

The AAA programme began last February and was launched nationally in July 2013 to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the NHS. Since then, the work of the AAA Screening Team has received local acclaim for its results.

In the team’s first year 8,377 men aged 65 or over were scanned for AAAs – a symptomless swelling of the body’s main blood vessel, the aorta - with the 2,215 over 65’s who self-referred onto the programme being the highest number of any NHS Trust in the country.

The Trust has now also secured the contract for managing the promotion of Breast Cancer Screening across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and we will be working with hospitals across the region to increase the number of women taking up the offer of screening.

The promotion of the Breast Cancer programme is still in its infancy so we will be able to tell you more about the programme and its results in the months ahead but throughout October and November we have been laying the foundations for the programme and also working to find screening ‘champions’ for each of the five districts being covered to help with publicity work.

The ‘champions’ are women who have experience of Breast Cancer being picked up by a mammogram, either personally or through a close friend or relative, or are going through treatment and who are passionate about working with us to raise awareness of the importance of the screening programme. So far we have received much welcomed support from Sally Wilkinson of Barnsley, Pat Howe from Sheffield and Kath Parkin of Doncaster. Pat and Kath both had cancers detected through the screening programme while Sally is showing her support for the programme as her mother is affected by the disease.

These developments for the Trust in Breast Screening coincided with October being Breast Cancer Awareness month and offered the perfect opportunity for us to start reminding people of the symptoms of Breast Cancer and to check themselves regularly for any abnormalities and to speak to your GP if you notice the slightest change in what is normal for you.

Screening for Breast Cancer can detect the disease before you may otherwise be aware of any symptoms. Staff up for prestigious regional leadership recognition awards One of our matrons and our integrated discharge team are in the running for the NHS Yorkshire and Humber Leadership Awards 2014. These awards recognise outstanding individuals and teams working in all levels and all professions who have ultimately improved people’s health and experience.

M

arie Hardacre, Matron of the Emergency Care Group, was shortlisted for the Inspirational Leader of the Year Award for the way that she has inspired others and is passionate about developing, nurturing and leading nurses through a life-long career, ensuring the workforce has the right skills to deliver high quality care and be innovative in meeting service challenges.

The integrated discharge team, which include staff from this Trust; Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council; Rotherham Doncaster & South Humber NHS Foundation Trust and Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, have been shortlisted for the Outstanding Collaborative Leadership of the Year for the support they provide to patients leaving hospital.

Their work, described as pioneering, is based on evidence that shows patients make a better recovery if they leave hospital as soon as they’re well enough to, provided the right support is in place. It is not the first time the team has received such recognition, in 2013 they were shortlisted for the Nursing Times team of the year award. Their collaborative working has received interest from all over the country and they have presented at several national conferences as a result of it.

The finalists have seen off tough competition from over 155 applications to be one of the 31 shortlisted finalists across the nine categories. Winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony in Leeds on 3 December and will go on to take part in national final in March 2015.

Cancer patient survey shows big improvements People diagnosed with cancer and having treatment at our hospitals are experiencing greater improvements in their cancer care according to a national cancer patient survey.

The 2013/14 National Cancer Patient Experience survey, which included 153 trusts in England that provide cancer services, asked patients their opinion on their whole experience from diagnosis to treatment. In this Trust the survey was sent to 430 eligible patients of whom 253 of them returned their completed questionnaires.

The survey results show an impressive improvement from the 2012 survey with your local hospitals being firmly placed in the top 20% highest scoring trusts for a third of the areas covered in the survey.

Almost every question asked in the survey showed improvement on last year, with only 6% of the answers scoring in the lowest 20% of trusts.

the opportunity to take part in research, and the way that hospital staff had explained the outcome of their operations to patients.

The Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2014 was carried out by Quality Health, on behalf of the Department of Health, and provides insights into the cancer care experienced by patients across England who were treated as day cases or inpatients. The survey defines quality through a set of indicators, for example safety, effectiveness and patient experience to show that standards are being maintained or improved. hand hygiene pilot this winter Staff at Doncaster Royal Infirmary are taking part in UK’s first ever NHS pilot of a unique hand hygiene reminder tool in a bid to further reduce infections.

alled Biovigil, the hand washing reminder device is being trialled in a couple of the Trust’s busiest areas - the Emergency Department and Ward 18 from November 2014 for a period of three months.

The small digital device, resembling a badge, is worn by hospital staff on their upper torso making it clearly visible to patients and other staff. The devise detects hand movements and senses hand gel changing colour from green, to flashing amber and red.

Green means that the hands are clean, flashing amber shows that the hands are ready for washing and after a period of time if the hands remain uncleansed, the device will beep and turn red.

Maurice Madeo, Deputy Director of Infection, Prevention & Control, said: “We already have a great track record of preventing infections, and we are always on the lookout for new ways to help us reduce them. Hands are important tools in healthcare, but they are also the most common source of infection. It’s proven that washing your hands is by far the best way to combat germs, and as winter approaches, most infections are becoming more active. That’s why we decided to trial the Biovigil device at this time of year so that we can give it a good ‘road test’ and we have chosen a couple of our busiest areas of the Trust, our Emergency Department and Ward 18.”

Samantha Sidwell, Matron for the Emergency Care Group, said: “The device is very visual and you can tell at a glance whether someone has clean hands. We are hoping that it will bring extra confidence to our patients that the staff caring for them really do take precautions not to pass any infections on to them. We think it will help encourage patients to start a ‘hand hygiene’ conversation with our staff, even if it is just to ask about the badge.”

We are working in partnership with B Braun, a company that provides innovative products and services to healthcare professionals and hospitals. Biovigil is an American product which is being sponsored by B Braun and this is the first time that this product is being trialled in the UK.

Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster is a new service to help overweight adults, children and families in the area improve their health.

The service offers one to one support for 12 months, as well as free group education and activity sessions. The Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster specialist team includes registered dietitians, exercise specialists,

healthy lifestyle advisers, a psychology professionalist and a physiotherapist.

The service can be accessed at venues across Doncaster including DRI and Montagu Hospital, as well as in Hatfield, Intake, Thorne, Askern, Edlington, Doncaster Dome and Dearne Valley.

The service is aimed at adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of

over 35kg/m2 and children with a BMI of over the 98th percentile.

Raising awareness of Fraud in the NHS Mark Bishop our Local Counter Fraud Specialist, is responsible for raising awareness of the issues and investigating allegations of fraud and corruption.

The work of Local Counter Fraud Specialists and NHS Protect has already recovered tens of millions of pounds of NHS money and led to many fraudsters being prosecuted throughout the country. However, there is also a job for every honest person who works in and uses the NHS to help by recognising and reporting any fraud that does occur so that the public funds of the NHS are spent on caring for patients and not diverted into fraudster’s pockets.

He said “Most people who work in and use the NHS are honest, but unfortunately there is a minority that tries to defraud it of its valuable resources. Fraud is not just committed by staff but also by patients and those who provide goods and services to the NHS. We try to ensure that such fraudsters are dealt with in the most appropriate manner and this can mean being prosecuted through the criminal courts. We also seek to recover monies that have been defrauded and where NHS staff are involved the Trust will also take disciplinary action and refer them to their professional body for further possible sanctions”.

Matthew Lowry, Director of Finance and Infrastructure, said: “Fraud against the NHS is not a victimless crime because these valuable funds are meant for patient care.

We want to send a clear message that fraud will not be tolerated in our Trust and we will support the prosecution of offenders.”

It’s official – we’re the best place to work in the region Results from the latest NHS Staff survey puts us firmly at the top of other trusts in the Yorkshire and Humber region for being the best place to work.

The independent NHS Staff Friends and Family Test survey delivered by Capita in May 2014, gives NHS staff a greater say in improving healthcare and their workplace.

The survey revealed that 74% of staff who work here rated us as the best place to work in the whole of the Yorkshire and the Humber area. Another 78% said that they would recommend our hospitals to their

family and friends as a great place for care and treatment, and a staggering 90% of the Trust’s staff said that their training and development had helped them to deliver a better experience for their patients.

As well as coming out on top for being the best place to work we also scored the highest response rate of any Trust using Capita to deliver the survey, a 30% response rate. The results are based on responses from around a sample of 2,000 staff across the Trust’s sites at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop, Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, as well as clinics and

outpatient services across the Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas.

The NHS Staff Friends and Family Test survey was introduced in April 2014 to allow staff feedback on NHS services based on recent experience. Staff were asked to respond to two questions. The ‘Work’ question asks how likely staff would recommend their organisation to friends and family as a place to work. The ‘Care’ question asks how likely staff are to recommend their health trust to friends and family who need similar treatment or care.

Consultant in Silver Scalpel final five One of our surgeons is in the final five for the prestigious National Silver Scalpel Award, which is given to consultants who have shown the highest standards of surgical training.

M

r Shahed Quraishi is the first Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon in the whole of South Yorkshire to be in the running for this national trainer award, and was nominated by ENT surgical trainees.

A delighted Mr Quraishi said: “It is a great honour for me personally to be nominated and to be a finalist. The Silver Scalpel is the most prestigious trainer award to be bestowed to a surgical consultant in the UK.” In February this year Mr Quraishi led a team of surgical specialists in an operation to successfully remove the largest ever head

and neck tumour reported in the UK (two kilogram) from the neck of a Doncaster woman.

Mr Quraishi continued “I am very grateful for all the support and opportunities the Trust has provided me with to help grow and develop surgeons of the future in Doncaster and Bassetlaw.”

The winner of the National Silver Scalpel Award will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Surgeons in Training in Glasgow on 28 February 2015. The Silver Scalpel will be presented to the winner

We’re fighting back against the seasonal round of infections this Christmas with a reminder to patients and visitors not to visit hospital if they have flu-like symptoms, or diarrhoea and vomiting.

Infections like flu and the norovirus bug – often nicknamed ‘winter vomiting disease’ – are more common at this time of the year.

Norovirus can spread quickly in close-knit areas such as hospitals, schools, nursing and residential homes.

That’s why we are asking anyone who has flu-like symptoms or think they may have norovirus not to come to the Emergency Department or visit hospital until they have been completely symptom-free for at least 48 hours. If you visit hospital before then, you could still unwittingly pass your norovirus onto hospital patients and staff.

Norovirus is not in itself a serious illness but it can have extremely worrying consequences

for hospitals. An outbreak may mean we have to restrict admissions to hospital wards in order to contain the infection.

We are asking patients and visitors: • Don’t come to hospital if you have any signs of a stomach upset or have flu-like symptoms.

• At home, always wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before handling food.

• If visiting someone in hospital, wash your hands before and after the visit. Use the hand gel provided at the hospital and ward entrances. Please don’t use patients’ toilets.

• If you have had a stomach upset, wait until you have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours before visiting hospital to protect sick and vulnerable patients.

By working with hospitals in this way, you can help us keep patients safe and fight the spread of infection.

Mums-to-be urged to get whooping cough vaccination M

ums-to-be are being urged to have their whooping cough vaccination to ensure that any risk to their child is kept to a minimum.

Pregnant women can be vaccinated against whooping cough between 28-32 weeks and in some cases, 38 weeks.

Vaccination ensures that mums-to-be are protected, as well as their child when it is born, due to the passing of antibodies to the baby via the placenta.

Midwife Kaye Bulliman said: “We want to raise awareness amongst pregnant women of the importance of being vaccinated against whooping cough so that their baby is protected against the condition when it is born.

“The vaccination is available from your GP so we are encouraging prospective parents to make an appointment for vaccination or to speak to their midwife if they have any questions about each process.”

25 year old Hayley Jennings of Armthorpe, Doncaster was vaccinated for whooping cough when she was pregnant with her second child and is encouraging other mumsto-be to follow suit.

“My Midwife at Doncaster Royal Infirmary encouraged me to have the vaccinations, which I did at 30-weeks,” Hayley said.

“It is something that a lot of others in the hospital also said I should get sorted and I obviously wanted to do everything I could for the health of my baby. I would therefore encourage other mums-to-be to also be vaccinated at their GP Practice for the peace of mind it affords.”

In 2012, the UK reported the largest increase in cases of Whooping Cough for over 20 years. At that time, the greatest numbers of cases were in teenagers and young adults but, 14 children died as a result of the outbreak.

As a result, the Department of Health introduced a Whooping Cough vaccination programme to immunise pregnant women from 28 weeks of pregnancy to ensure that new-borns were vaccinated when born.

Blood sciences lab is officially opened A new cutting edge blood sciences laboratory at Doncaster Royal Infirmary was officially opened in November by the President of the Institute of Biomedical Science, Mr Nick Kirk.

The new laboratory was the result of six years’ work bringing together the pathology specialities of clinical biochemistry, haematology and virology in one laboratory, to provide 24/7 cutting edge blood sciences service to the people of Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

“We now have a fully automated laboratory that is able to respond quickly to the changes in demand for the service and has the means to incorporate new pathology tests and investigations.”

Dr Jean Wardell, Assistant Director for Diagnostic & Pharmacy Care Group at the Trust, said: “This modernisation of facilities at Doncaster is hugely significant for our local patients as pathology is at the heart of modern healthcare and is involved in over

The laboratory analyses over four million tests a year from approximately 1.5 million patient requests, and offers over 400 different pathology tests.

During the course of a single day the laboratory can analysis on average 8,000 patient samples, almost half being requested by GPs.

Governor update Here are the recent changes on the Board of Governors: • Joan Beck, Partner Governor for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC), retired after nine years. The Board of Governors thank Joan for her contribution and wish her a very happy retirement.

Who’s the Governor Staff Governor Andrew Swift represents the views of nonclinical staff in the Trust. He first started working at Doncaster Royal Infirmary in 2000 as a maintenance craftsman. Here we find out a little more about him.

Tell us about yourself, your hobbies and interests I was born in 1961 and I’m proud to be a Barnsley lad. My working life started at Barnburgh Main Colliery where I worked until it closed in 1989, leaving as a trained mechanical technician. I kept to engineering and started at DRI as a maintenance craftsman in 2000.

I married Gail in 1986 and we have two

sons Liam and Ryan. Liam was married last year on our favourite Greek island Skiathos and recently made us proud grandparents to Alfie.

I am a biker and an avid Owls supporter and have a 12 year old terrier called Tyke. I’m a union, health and safety rep and staff-side deputy chair.

Why did I become a governor?

I believe that my life experiences, technical knowledge and responsibilities have given me the attributes required to make a positive contribution on the Board of Governors.

It’s an exciting opportunity to represent the views of staff in an encouraging and challenging way. I’m always available for staff to contact me via my DBH email.

Is the role what you expected?

It’s a very rewarding experience. The information and insight on the Trust is excellent.

A Rare Survivor Christmas in Isolation Pictured is a Christmas card that was posted to a patient in Worksop’s Isolation Hospital in December 1907.

I

n pre-NHS days, each local authority was required to provide isolation facilities for patients suffering from smallpox, a highly contagious disease, which had been a scourge of towns and cities for decades. With no cure available, removal of sufferers from the community was the only solution.

In Worksop, a small isolation unit of 16 beds had been provided at Kilton Wood, near the old workhouse infirmary on Kilton Hill, now the site of Bassetlaw Hospital. Isolation buildings were often of somewhat flimsy construction, for example wooden huts, and for obvious reasons were placed in areas remote from public access.

It is likely that this card was sent to this hospital, although another existed not far away at Carlton in Lindrick. In 1948, in anticipation of the coming of the National Health Service, two wooden huts were transferred from Kilton Wood to Carlton. There they continued to provide care for patients suffering from other diseases such as scarlet fever, diphtheria and tuberculosis.

The card shown here is indeed a rare survivor, since as its sender points out, it was not permitted for patients to take away any belongings when they were discharged, to prevent any risk of carrying infection into the outside world. How the card avoided this rule and found its way to an on-line auction site over a hundred years later is a mystery.

We know nothing about the patient, her age or her medical condition, or if she recovered, though we can assume that she came from the locality. Let us hope that her Christmas was made as happy as was possible in the circumstances, and that her stay was short.
