NHS Change Day

Sally’s pledge Sally Gibson is a registered nurse working on the neonatal intensive care unit caring for premature babies born at the Royal Derby Hospital. She was the first member of staff from Derby Hospitals to make a pledge to the national NHS Change Day campaign this year.

Here Sally tells us about her pledge and why she made it.

“I’ve only been at Derby since August last year, but I’ve been really impressed by the team on the neonatal intensive care unit. Everyone works really hard every day to do the best for the little ones and families in our care. I decided to make a pledge after seeing the campaign on Twitter.

There is a big nursing community on Twitter, very interactive and enthusiastic. I get fed up of hearing negative stories about the NHS, when actually almost everyone is giving their all every day, so I wanted to make my pledge something which reflected that attitude.”

NHS Change Day takes place on the 3rd March 2014. It was started last year by a group of junior doctors who wanted to make a positive difference to patients cared for by the NHS and generated over 189,000 pledges from NHS staff across the country.

Flu fighters help protect patients More than three quarters of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals at Derby Hospitals have been vaccinated this year against flu. This ensures our staff and patients are better protected against flu.

Derby Hospitals’ Infection Control Accreditation Programme runs across the Royal Derby Hospital and the London Road Community Hospital. The programme sets standards for infection prevention and control in wards, outpatient areas and all clinical areas.

Patients and visitors can also do their part to aid infection control; they can help by washing their hands with soap and water, and cleaning their hands with the disinfecting foam before entering and when leaving wards. Please also remember not to visit hospital if you feel unwell or have an illness such as a heavy cold, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Saving lives A Derby man is celebrating the arrival of the New Year after life saving surgery. Derby Hospitals’ Triple AAA screening programme has saved the life of retired bus driver, Donald Beard.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms, commonly known as AAAs, often go undiscovered and can have life threatening consequences.

A fortunate conversation with a nurse at the gym led to Donald putting himself forward for Triple AAA screening. During his scan in November, they discovered an aneurysm. He then underwent surgery the following month.

AAAs occur when the wall of the aorta, which is the main blood vessel in the abdomen, become weak. It then expands and forms an abdominal aortic aneurysm which, if left undetected, can burst and cause severe internal bleeding.

They are most commonly found in men aged 65 and over, and about 6,000 people in England and Wales die every year from them. Men in their 65th year will automatically receive an invitation for screening.

However, men aged 66 and over are encouraged to self refer.

With more staff than ever before being vaccinated, Derby Hospitals has been named as a finalist for the ‘Most improved flu fighter organisation’ in this year’s national Flu Fighter Awards.

“We are delighted to have seen such a high level of take up of the flu vaccination this winter across our front line teams. We recognise how serious flu is, especially for some of our vulnerable patients and this means we can keep our patients, visitors and staff safe,” said Karen Martin, Derby Hospitals’ Director of Workforce Management.

The Flu Fighter Awards ceremony will take place in Leeds on Wednesday 19 February.

Miller, screening manager for Derby Hospitals, said: “It’s a really simple process which takes 10 minutes and we can give an answer there and then – if there is no aneurysm, then you don’t have to worry about seeing us again.” If an aneurysm is discovered the process that follows is reasonably quick. We’re a leading centre for this sort of surgery and we really try to be proactive about this issue.”

@DerbyHospitals ‘First half marathon ever. Hoping to raise funds for the new observation unit in the Children’s Emergency Department in Derby’.

After 20 years of no exercise, the former rugby player and school athlete has put his running shoes back on to get fit and he is feeling the benefits. He told us, “I used to sit on the sofa in the evening, feeling lethargic and I lacked energy. I knew something needed to change so I listened to the NHS coach 5k running podcast and that got me motivated.”

Now the busy medic looks forward to his regular runs. “We have a lot of runners in the children’s emergency department and that certainly helps.

Now I’ve had a complete shift of mindset, I look forward to my running days and I’ve entered my first half-marathon. I’m also running in the Derby 10k in April.”

Farewell to Medical Director Derby Hospitals’ executive medical director, Miss Alison Fowlie, is retiring after a career spanning 42 years in the NHS. Early in her career, Alison pioneered the use of ultrasound in fetal medicine, travelling behind the Iron Curtain to show doctors in Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries how ultrasound could be used to detect abnormalities in unborn babies.

Miss Fowlie first came to Derby in 1990, arriving at what was then a new maternity wing at Derby City Hospital, to take up her second consultant post in obstetrics and gynaecology. This was a move which Alison herself describes as ‘one she has never regretted’, and she has since dedicated her energy to putting quality and safety at the heart of Derby’s clinical services.

She became clinical director for obstetrics and gynaecology in 2000 and has made a tremendous contribution to the development and advancement of maternity care here in Derby.

She was instrumental in the development of Derby’s fetal medicine centre and she introduced resident obstetric consultants on-call seven days a week.

Since becoming the Trust’s executive medical director in 2009, her clinical leadership has put quality and safety at the heart of patient care. She has been the driving force behind the creation of a Trust-wide Patient Safety Team, which has led improvements to significantly reduce avoidable harm.

Her contribution to patient safety was recently endorsed when Derby was benchmarked against a study of hospitals in USA, UK and New Zealand, which clearly showed that Derby has a strong safety culture, with significantly better scores for safety climate, team work and job satisfaction.

Alison has made a tremendous contribution both to Derby Hospitals and the NHS as a whole and we wish her a happy and healthy retirement.

In the spotlight …

with Dr Nigel Sturrock Dr Nigel Sturrock joined Derby Hospitals in January and will take up the role of executive medical director in March. Throughout January and February he is working on our wards to get to know staff and talk to patients and relatives. He is keen to hear your views about what works well here and, importantly, to listen to your feedback on areas we could improve to support staff and patients.

What attracted you to Derby Hospitals?

I saw Derby as a high performing foundation trust. It has a reputation as a friendly hospital providing excellent clinical care. For me, the medical director post offered an opportunity to be part of the goal of being a beacon of excellence in healthcare. Of course there are issues that need resolving - around financial, access targets and some aspects of quality such as C Diff, but they are no different from anywhere else - and I look forward to working with colleagues to help turn these around.

What have you been doing since you arrived?

I’ve very much enjoyed my first month - half my week is spent on the Medical Assessment Unit seeing patients on the acute medical take. I very much enjoy my clinical work - and this has given me the chance to talk to clinical colleagues on the ground to hear what the issues are as well as see things for myself. I’ve been shadowing Alison Fowlie at various meetings, as well as having lots of conversations with her as she fills me in on all I need to know! Finally, I’ve been meeting the divisional medical directors, clinical directors and associate clinical directors as well as the general managers of the divisions to hear all about the specialities.

What have you learnt about the Trust so far?

I’ve been really impressed by all that I’ve seen around the wards and departments - the pride in the care that is given has really come across.

Some areas are really ahead of the game, like the birthing suite, or the development of the advanced clinical practitioners in medicine.

What will your priorities be?

I want to give myself time to really understand the issues, looking at the quality of care that we deliver and get to know everybody - so I’ll be out and about - visiting wards every week, as well as getting to divisional and business unit meetings. The new structure is putting clinical leadership at the forefront in Derby to deliver quality and performance in difficult financial times, so I want to facilitate and support that to really take off.

Care Makers Champion Compassionate Care Physiotherapist Chris Walker is flying the flag for Derby Hospitals.

Chris is the first allied health professional in the country to sign up as a Care Maker.

Care Makers are mainly nurses, midwives, health care assistants and other health professionals who are committed to the ‘6Cs’; Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment. The Care Makers aim to capture the ‘spirit’ of London 2012, learning from the energy and enthusiasm of the Games Makers.

Chris became a Care Maker due to his enthusiasm for living the 6Cs in every aspect of his job. He hopes by being a Care Maker he will encourage other health professionals to recognise that the 6Cs are something they already do and to revitalise their enthusiasm for their jobs and would like to see more non-nursing staff take up the role of Care Maker.

Would-be Care Makers will need support from their managers/educators to apply. If they are successful they can champion compassionate care both at local and regional events. Chris finds it very beneficial being part of a wider team and having a support network available. Derby Hospitals are proud to support their growing team of Care Makers.

Meet Derby’s Care Makers Stacey Martin has been employed by the Trust for 12 years. She wanted to become a Care Maker as the values were at the heart of what she was already doing, and also to apply those values towards colleagues as well as patients.

Ian Tydeman joined the Trust nearly 10 years ago, and is on secondment as a practice placement facilitator from Intensive Care. He thinks it important in his role, supporting and mentoring student nurses, that he helps to reinforce the 6Cs from the beginning of their training, helping to lift the spirits of student nurses and help show them how their role can be portrayed positively.

Claire Kinnell started with the Trust in 2001 as a registered nurse and is now the practice learning support manager. She still works on wards twice a month and finds being a Care Maker really beneficial as she feels she has the Trust’s backing to spend longer with patients.

Dennis Casayuran has worked within the Trust since 2000. He hopes the legacy of Care Makers will maintain the high standards of the NHS for future generations.
