It’s our staff that make us so special Particularly during challenging times it’s really important that we don’t forget all the amazing work that is being done to improve patient care and safety every day in Derby.

Not only do we try our best to celebrate staff achievements through our Pride of Derby and Celebrating Success Awards featured in this edition, we are also keen to show that what we do in Derby is amongst all that is best across the whole NHS. You will see from our national award successes in this edition that is exactly what we are doing!

In this issue

Congratulations to the Medical Assessment Unit named Derby Hospitals Team of the Year at our annual staff Celebrating Success Awards. The Team provide emergency hospital care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and were praised for their close team working, positive attitude and for always striving to do more for their patients.

We want to thank all staff and teams – nurses, doctors, managers, therapists, porters, domestics and everyone else (too many to name) for their endless commitment to putting our patients first and for helping ensure Derby Hospitals is the best it can be. This edition is dedicated to recognising and thanking you all.

Faster access to urgent care ÂŁ4.4 million extra funding has been given to the NHS in Southern Derbyshire to improve services for patients needing emergency care.

This year Accident and Emergency (A&E) services at the Royal Derby Hospital have been under constant pressure as the numbers of local people needing emergency care have continued to rise. This is putting our already busy A&E under even more pressure.

Most of the money will be spent across community health and social care services to ensure frail elderly patients and people with long term conditions have faster access to urgent care stopping them going unnecessarily to A&E. Schemes will include investing in new community support teams, community matrons and specialist consultant geriatricians working in nursing homes.

Meanwhile, we are continuing to improve urgent care services for those patients who do need to come to the hospital. We have opened a frail elderly assessment service to provide better combined health and social care for elderly patients at the Royal Derby Hospital, a rapid access assessment service at London Road Community Hospital which patients can be referred to directly by their GP, an out of hours GP service adjacent to A&E at weekends, as well as recruiting up to 50 additional doctors and nurses to work in A&E. Please do help us to ensure A&E is only used for genuine accidents or emergencies.

Private patients will help us fund NHS care A dedicated private patient suite has opened at the Royal Derby Hospital this month. Derby Private Health is run by a dedicated team of nurses and doctors caring for private patients who want to be treated at the Royal Derby Hospital. The private patient service operates separately

to NHS care allowing private patients locally to be able to choose first class private care with the added benefits and safety a modern NHS hospital brings. Profits from private patient care will be put back into local NHS services for the benefit of all patients and staff.

Patients praise cleanliness at Derby Hospitals Patients have praised the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital for their high standards of cleanliness after being invited in to inspect our hospitals.

For the first time patient-led inspections took place in June this year at hospitals across the country.

Results from these inspections put our hospitals amongst the best in the country for cleanliness, patient privacy, and the quality of food and our buildings.

We are keen to openly involve patients in reviewing our hospitals and a monthly programme of inspections is now taking place providing patients with a real opportunity to help us improve patient experience.

Aspiring nurses learn the basics of care Derby Hospitals in partnership with the University of Derby has become the first hospital in the country to give aspiring nurses an opportunity to work on its wards as health care assistants (HCAs) prior to becoming student nurses.

The aspiring nurses will spend six months gaining a real insight into the qualities they need to provide true care and compassion to patients before they embark on their nursing careers.

Leah Torr, aged 18, from Leek in Staffordshire, is an HCA on Ward 312, Stroke Rehabilitation.

She said: “This is a great opportunity to give people real nursing experience before they consider a future in care.

“I am learning essential nursing skills that can only be taught by working with experienced staff on a ward.

Staff have been very supportive and taught me a great deal about delivering high quality care.”

Cancer patients positive about their care Patients receiving treatment for cancer have rated their care as excellent or very good in a recent national patient experience survey. In Derby, we care for patients with a range of different cancers throughout their illnesses.

This latest survey puts Derby’s cancer services amongst the top 20% in the country with patients praising nurses and doctors for listening and involving them every step of the way throughout their care.

Winner - Derby Hospitals’ Mobile App for GPs, Marketing & e-Learning

Pathology identified an opportunity to review the way samples from GPs and out-patients were processed when they first reached the laboratory. Staff worked together to find ways of improving the sample handling process in order to save staff time.

The Trust now has an innovative way of rapidly providing primary care colleagues with the information they need about our hospital at any time, anywhere. This successful collaboration between the Trust and local GPs has seen the creation of the first GP App in the country.

Putting Patients First Winner - Meal Time Activity Support Volunteers, Facilities

Over 100 young people from local schools are getting a real insight into what it takes to work in a caring profession thanks to a scheme bringing the young and old together.

Working across 20 wards, our young volunteers undertake activities and befriend older patients before meal times, improving their nutrition and hydration helping them to get better quicker.

Right First Time Winner - A Million Points to Make, Intensive Care Team

Life support is a complex and dynamic process which is different for each patient; this makes data collection of this practice challenging.

Thus the Intensive Care Unit team have developed a way to generate precise audit data to continually improve practice for patients on life support.

Due to the rise in malnutrition in hospitals new Nutritional Link Lead (NLL) teams have been created. Our dieticians developed a network of nutritional link leads from each of the local community hospitals bringing them together to act as ambassadors for good nutrition for elderly people.

Mary is an excellent role model; she is thoroughly committed to living our values and patient care is at the heart of everything she does.

Pride of Derby Staff have once again been commended for their exceptional compassion and care in our quarterly Pride of Derby awards. Patients, visitors and staff are invited to nominate anyone they feel has gone the extra mile, above and beyond their role to improve patient care and staff experience.

The ‘Best Team’ went to the Legal Services Team for their professionalism, commitment and high standards. Judges felt that the team always makes the time to ensure clinical staff are well prepared and feel supported often in very difficult circumstances.

The ‘Best Frontline’ member of staff award went to nurse consultant Fran Grant from Medicine. Fran received a number of nominations from patients’ relatives for consistently living the Trust’s values and working really hard to ensure patients and families know how to deal with complex situations.

We have now introduced a new category for Best Inspirational Leader and ask staff to nominate their leaders who are role models and inspire them to be the best they can be.

The ‘Best Behind the Scenes’ member of staff awards went to James Hodgkinson, linen porter who was nominated by a colleague for going over and above his role and succeeding in calming a patient down where others had failed. The judges were impressed with the difference James made to a young patient and how he was totally patient focused.

Infection control initiative wins Patient Safety Award Derby Hospitals staff have won first prize in a national innovation competition for designing an inflatable door which cuts the risk of airborne infections in hospitals improving patient safety.

Paul Brooks, Derby Hospitals Assistant Director of Facilities, and Helen Forrest, Lead Infection Control Nurse, won the Health Enterprise East Innovation competition for Patient Safety for The Derby Door.

Paul Brooks said: “We are really proud of our achievements. The Derby Door has already become a part of Derby Hospitals’ infection prevention control and good practice, with ward staff receiving training and using it as part of managing infection outbreaks.”

The Derby Door is an inflatable barrier which fits flush against walls and ceilings to form a safe and reliable seal around an area of a ward that needs decontaminating.

This enables staff to enter the bay

Many bed bays do not have doors and the idea of an inflatable door allows for a flexible and inexpensive solution to ensure the safety of both staff and patient.

Dr Anne Blackwood, Health Enterprise East Chief Executive said: “The choice of focus for this year’s competition reflects current healthcare priorities and some of the

innovations showcased here will play an important role in how services are delivered in the future to benefit both patients and those looking after them.”

National Acclaim

Recently Derby Hospitals staff have been successful in a range of national awards highlighting the fantastic services and care available to patients at our hospitals. These awards help hospitals to share best practice with the aim of improving NHS care across the country.

HSJ Efficiency Award Winner Acute Service Redesign - Enhanced Discharge Derby Hospitals’ Enhanced Discharge Project team are celebrating after winning first prize at a prestigious national awards ceremony for a care programme they set up to help patients stay well at home.

The judges awarded first prize for Efficiency in Acute Service Redesign at the Health Service Journal Efficiency Awards for the Royal Derby’s Enhanced Discharge Programme.

The programme focuses on patients who are at greater risk of returning to hospital.

Nurses work with patients and their carers by helping them to better understand patients’ health needs and to help them stay healthy and manage their condition at home.

They also work with partner organisations to ensure the aftercare continues. 

   



One in 10 patients will experience something going wrong during their hospital stay. Tragic events like those at Mid-Staffordshire and half of all harm events are avoidable, that’s why Derby Hospitals formed a multidisciplinary safety team as safety ambassadors across the Trust.

They aimed to reduce harm by 50% in one-year and they successfully achieved this.

Long Term Conditions Award - Remote Pump Partnership Our children’s diabetes team introduced a remote multidisciplinary pump-clinic for children. Their aim was to support children to use insulin pumps as a tool for better self-care without having to continually come to hospital. Children download their pump data every six weeks and without coming in to hospital doctors, nurses and dieticians review the results and identify where improvements can be made. As the autumn sets in and winter approaches, one of the avoidable pressures on the NHS is flu.

Whether you are a patient, relative or member of staff the best way to protect yourself, your family and - in the case of NHS staff - your patients, is to get the flu vaccine.

Those at greater risk from flu include frontline NHS staff, by the very nature of their jobs, dealing with patients who are unwell every day, as well as people aged 65 or over, pregnant women, and those with health conditions such as severe asthma, chest or heart complaints and diabetes.

This year we want to ensure at least 75% of staff have a flu jab.

Staff sickness due to flu can have a massive impact on other members of the team, safe staffing levels and patient care. So every member of staff can help us maintain the quality of care we provide to patients this winter by simply having a flu jab.

The flu jab is free, is completely safe, and it can’t give you flu! The vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu, so even if

you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay flu safe.

If you know of someone who may be at risk from flu, do tell them how important it is that they get protected. Staff should also encourage their work colleagues to get protected.

Award for Compassionate Care This year the Department of Health have introduced a new award for Compassionate Care. From 111 entries from hospitals across the country we have been selected as one of only eight finalists for this prestigious award!

Our entry based on intergenerational caring (see Celebrating Success winner of Putting Patients First) was selected as a pioneering example of how small things can make a big

difference to patients. That’s certainly been the case in Derby where we’ve enhanced care for elderly patients and patients with dementia complementing existing nursing support with innovative programmes based on intergenerational partnerships between young volunteers and elderly patients.

In addition, we’ve improved ward environments for these patients

with 1950’s reminiscence rooms and memory cafes.

We don’t believe other hospitals in the country have developed and extensively rolled out intergenerational caring which in turn attracts aspiring doctors and nurses giving them real life experience of what it takes to become compassionate future NHS health professionals. www.twitter.com/DerbyHospitals

Farewell to Dianne Prescott Clinicians and managers joined together in September to bid a fond farewell to Dianne Prescott, Director of Strategy and Partnership who left the Trust after 18 years. Di joined the NHS as a management trainee 36 years ago and has since worked at a number of hospitals across the country in different roles.
