We are, as you know, a hugely ambitious Trust and we aim to be recognised across the region as the best provider of secondary care and as the co-creator and the best provider of high quality, cost effective integrated health care. We will do this by delivering the very Best Care, with the Best People in the Best Place for our local community …. and will achieve this by 2020.

Towards the end of the year we will be electing a new Council of Governors as the current terms of office come to an end.

Governors have made a huge difference within the Trust and they have consistently told us what is important to you – our members. If you would like to play a part in achieving our vision for 2020 then why not stand for election.

Please turn to p11 to find out more about the role and the election process. If you don’t want to become a governor then please take part by voting for your governors of choice.

And finally, I have been so touched and truly moved to read the People’s Award nominations sent in by our members. Each summer I read them and I never fail to be impressed by the efforts our staff and volunteers go to – and this year was certainly no exception. It’s fabulous to hear so many personal stories of the truly great customer experiences delivered by our staff and volunteers across our four hospitals. I am hugely proud of the commitment and achievements of our staff - many of whom have obviously had a profound effect in improving the everyday lives and health of our patients and wider community. I will look forward to announcing the winner on 11 October 2012 at our annual Staff Excellence Awards.

Former Consultant Surgeon new Interim Chief Executive By 2020, we will be recognised across the East Midlands as the best provider of secondary care, and also as the creator and best provider Mark Goldman of high quality, cost effective integrated care, forging new partnerships with primary, secondary and social care.

With this ambitious vision in mind and in order to build on some of our successes over the last 12 months, the Board of Directors has appointed Dr Mark Goldman as Interim Chief Executive.

Mark joined the Trust on Wednesday, 6 June and will lead us

in the achievement of our objectives over the months ahead. Mark has a long and successful career in the NHS, working for 17 years as a consultant surgeon, before becoming medical director and subsequently chief executive of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, a role he fulfilled until 2010. During his time at Heart of England, Mark led the Trust to achieving its Foundation Trust status and through the acquisition, turnaround and merger of Good Hope Hospital - creating one of the most successful Foundation Trusts in the sector.

Mark is passionate about the NHS and high quality healthcare and has undertaken national roles to improve clinical engagement, clinical leadership and to support the development of clinical strategies nationally.

Appeal launched for £750,000 MRI scanner The Trust has teamed up with the Chad newspaper to launch a £750,000 fundraising appeal to purchase a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner for King’s Mill Hospital.

The brand new scanner will revolutionise the services the Trust offers and allow patients to be treated quicker, safer and illnesses to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.

The new MRI scanner – a medical imaging technique used in radiology to visualise internal structures of the body in detail – is expected to be used over the next seven years to treat thousands of patients across the local community.

The Chad and the Trust are now urging the local community, businesses and fundraising groups to back the MRI appeal and dig deep.

Tracy Doucét, Trust Chairman, said: “This is a massive investment but one that will last for seven years. This is one of the single biggest pieces of equipment that a hospital can purchase.

“We really think the community will get behind us. Top quality healthcare is something that the public deserves. It is a massive amount of money but we are confident we can meet our target.”

Jayne Burkitt, radiography services manager said: “The new MRI scanner would allow us to do examinations that currently are done in other hospitals.

“We need everyone to get behind this appeal. It really is an exciting campaign.”

MRI provides good contrast between the different soft tissues of the body, which

makes it especially useful in imaging the brain, muscles, the heart and cancers compared with other medical imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) or x-rays. Unlike CT scans or traditional X-rays, MRI does not use ionizing radiation.

We are delighted that the King’s Mill Hospital volunteers and the Amazon Breast Support Group are all working hard to raise funds for this appeal.

“Providing first class quality care for new families is one of the most rewarding aspects of the maternity service and we are delighted to receive this award.”

Baby-friendly award for Trust The Trust’s maternity service has been awarded a prestigious Baby Friendly Award, achieving international recognition from UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund).

The service achieved an outstanding 100% in all eight assessments, and has been accredited with a Stage 2 award, which focuses on the commitment to provide high-quality education for all staff involved in the care of mothers and babies, particularly in relation to supporting breastfeeding women.

The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up

by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies.

In the UK, the initiative works with health professionals to ensure that mothers and babies receive high-quality support to facilitate successful breastfeeding.

The Award is given to maternity services after an assessment by a UNICEF team has shown that recognised best practice standards are in place.

The assessor reported that all staff working on the maternity unit are welcoming and caring. It also highlighted that it is exceptionally unusual for a service to be given a mark of 100%, and in ten years the assessor had never marked a unit so highly.

Alison Whitham, Head of Midwifery for the Trust, said: “Providing first class quality care for new families is one of the most rewarding aspects of our job and we are delighted to receive this award.

“Breastfeeding protects babies against a wide range of serious illnesses including gastroenteritis and respiratory infections in infancy as well as allergies and diabetes in childhood.”

It pays to listen and make a change The Trust’s Payroll and Pension team recently surveyed staff to find out what staff think about the services they provide.

•9 6% said the payroll staff are efficient

Trust highly rated in NHS staff survey

The role of the Payroll and Pensions department is to deliver a comprehensive, accurate and ‘on time’ service to all staff.

Survey results show that:

• 71% said that the team was good or excellent at completing amendments quickly

Results published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) show that Sherwood Forest Hospitals ranked in the country’s top 20 per cent of acute trusts for staff: • Feeling satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver • Receiving job-relevant training, learning or development in the last 12 months • Not experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse from staff in the last 12 months • Not suffering work related injuries in the last 12 months • Not working extra hours.

The annual anonymous survey of NHS staff working in acute trusts across England also saw the Trust’s hospitals placed average or above in 25 out of 38 key finding areas including staff: • Recommending the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment • Agreeing their role makes a difference to patients • Feeling valued by their work colleagues • Having well-structured appraisals in the last 12 months • Believing the Trust provides equal opportunities for career progression or promotion • Having the ability to contribute to improvements at work • Feeling that there are good opportunities to develop their potential at work • Receiving health and safety training in the last 12 months • Receiving support from their immediate managers.

• 90% of respondents found their payslip easy to understand

Survey highlights excellent patient care Patients at King’s Mill and Newark hospitals have praised in a national survey the excellent care they received while staying in our hospitals.

The findings come from the annual survey of inpatient services and facilities by the Care Quality Commission. Respondents were patients who spent at least one night at either King’s Mill or Newark hospitals in July 2011.

The scores were better than other trusts nationally in seven main areas, for patients: • Noticing that nurses washed or cleaned 4 Best | August 2012

NHS Confederation leaders visit The Trust welcomed Sir Keith Pearson, Chairman and Mike Farrar, Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation on 31 May for a high profile visit to showcase the Achieving Best Care approach and our partnership with Unipart Expert Practices.

The NHS Confederation is the membership body for all organisations that commission and provide NHS services. They are the only body to bring together and speak on behalf of the whole of the NHS. It was an opportunity for Sir Keith and Mike to hear staff describe how they have led improvements in their work areas that have benefited patients, staff and productivity.

The day started with a meet and greet and photographs in the main entrance. Sir Keith commented how he received a warm and friendly welcome from the car park attendant and was then greeted by a helpful volunteer as he walked in. He said his first impression was of friendly and polite staff and this continued throughout the visit.

between patients on the unit.

Following the lunch in Ward 53’s day room, Sir Keith and Mike learnt more about the Trust’s vision for the geriatric pathway and of the approach to working collaboratively with local partners including GPs and social care. What Sir Keith and Mike said had really impressed them was how productive the relationships are between all parties and how this has created a fantastic

The final leg of the tour was a visit to the emergency care centre, to see firsthand how the new patient capacity and flow room has radically improved how inpatient capacity and flow is managed, delivering significant quality, staff and financial benefits. It was also an opportunity to showcase EDASS (emergency department avoidance social service) and our single point of access scheme – both of which reduce unnecessary admissions into hospital.

On their departure, both Sir Keith Pearson and Mike Farrar wished to thank all staff who had been involved in the visit, including the facilities management teams who were instrumental in making the day such a success.

Tracy Doucét, Chairman said: “I would like to personally thank everyone involved in this visit.

Your efforts have resulted in two of the leading figures in UK healthcare going away with a hugely positive impression of our Trust.”

‘World Class Care’ for older people There is a recognised need to improve the services provided to the older population within our community.

Currently health and social care are being provided with ‘best interests’ in mind but can be delivered in a disjointed manner.

The Achieving Best Care (ABC) team started working with local healthcare representatives last December which included GPs, hospital staff and social services – with the aim of redesigning, implementing and sustaining a new look collaborative pathway for patients.

Understandably this is an ambitious piece of work which not only covers the hospital but our local GPs, Nottinghamshire social services, voluntary groups, care home providers and many more independent external agencies.

There are three clear areas which require radical change: • Appropriate admissions – a front door focus to ensure patients are treated in the right place at the right time

•C ollaborative ward care – empowering patients to help us get it right first time every time •C ommunity care and support – improving collaboration across organisational boundaries.

Local children tour hospital Children from Littlegates Nursery School and Holy Trinity School visited Newark Hospital in April and May to see for themselves how nurses, doctors and radiologists work.

The children, aged between 3 and 10, spent time with staff in the radiology department where they were shown some interesting x-rays and given a demonstration on what happens when people need an x-ray.

In the minor injuries unit/urgent care centre, the children were shown a number of different things, including how to take their pulse during exercise and hear their heart beat - and were delighted to be fitted with slings and plaster casts.

Kim Janickyi, Deputy Superintendent Radiographer at the hospital, said: “By taking the children around the hospital and introducing them to the sights and sounds it helps them understand how nurses and doctors work.”

Michael Thomson, Department Leader in the minor injuries unit/urgent care centre, said: “The staff really enjoy showing the children different equipment and procedures they could encounter if they came to hospital as a patient.

“It was plain to see all the children really enjoyed their time here - they all left with big smiles on their faces.”

Newark waiting area transformed The £220,000 transformation of the outpatient waiting area and reception has been welcomed by patients.

A new children’s area has been created with seating, books and play equipment, including electronic game stations.

There has been a complete re-orientation of the waiting area, which gives a fresh and welcoming feel.

Colourful artwork has been commissioned for the walls of the children’s area.

She said: “All the comments we have received so far have been favourable, especially the paintings on the walls for the children’s area.”

Individual, variable-height chairs replace the dated airport-style seating, giving a more comfortable relaxed environment for patients.

The work was partly paid for by the League of Friends of Newark Hospital with the support from the local community.

Miss Leoni Codd, Newark had attended the outpatient department with her daughter Aimee, who is under an eye consultant at the hospital.

New digital signs provide information about the outpatient clinics, along with other general hospital and health messages.

The League chairman, Mrs June Howsam, said the improvements would provide a better experience for patients.

She said: “As soon as we walked through the door the children ran straight for the play area.”

After the official opening, Deputy Mayor Councillor Bryan Richardson and Patrick Mercer, MP for Newark accompanied the Town Mayor on an escorted tour with Tracy Doucét, Chairman and Tracey Wall, Newark Hospital Manager.

Visitors were also impressed by the facilities in the Mercia Doughty Endoscopy and Pre-Operative Assessment Centres, which opened in September 2010. The endoscopy team demonstrated equipment used and explained procedures performed in the Mercia Doughty Centre.

The public were encouraged to take part in a quiz relating to the displays with prizes kindly donated from Waitrose and the Farndon Farm Shop.

Activities took place between 10.00am and 2.00pm and included a range of health and hospital information stands, interactive displays and demonstrations.

Meet and greet volunteers took visitors on site tours of clinical areas including Theatres, Minor Injuries Unit/Urgent Care Centre, Radiography, the CT scanner unit and the Sherwood Women’s Centre.

The Open Day provided an opportunity for the public to see the newly refurbished outpatients department. The transformation 8 Best | August 2012

The Theatre demonstration proved to be very popular including the display of hip and knee replacement kit.

There were also displays and demonstrations by the Cardiorespiratory department, Chaplaincy, Voluntary Transport Scheme, NHS Careers Advice and work experience, Royal College of Nursing, Pathology, Minster Ward, Genito-Urinary Medicine, Physiotherapy/ Occupational Therapy teams, Lions Club International, Dermatology, New Leaf, Pharmacy, Macmillan Cancer, Nottinghamshire LINk, Sconce Ward, Midwifery, Celebrating Success and Membership.

Infection prevention and control techniques were demonstrated by staff from Sconce Ward and Theatres.

The event was supported by Nottinghamshire Community Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service.

A period of public consultation is taking place about healthcare in Ashfield. It’s being undertaken

by Mansfield and Ashfield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – the new collective of 31 GP practices in Mansfield and Ashfield which is soon to take over the commissioning of local health services from Nottinghamshire PCT. Their vision is to redesign some of the health services that are delivered across Ashfield to make them more efficient and productive.

They want to better utilise the premises at Ashfield Health Village and ensure that high quality services are delivered locally. So they are proposing six sets of changes – each will be subject to the views expressed over the consultation period.

The CCG’s full consultation document and a response form for individual comments are available online at www.nottspct.nhs.uk. You can also access information and leave feedback at a dedicated stand set up in Ashfield Health Village.

Governors in action at a Council of Governors meeting Would you like to get more involved with your local hospital? Why not stand for election to be on our council of governors?

Election fever will be upon us later in the year as we go out to elect a new council of governors. Our current governors’ three year term of office will end on January 31, 2013 with our new governors due to start on February 1, 2013.

The Trust will be encouraging local people to stand and play a valuable part in shaping healthcare in our community and also encouraging members to vote in the election.

With over 20,800 public members and 5,000 staff members, all staff and public members will be eligible to vote. You will receive your voting pack at the end of November 2012. Please note affiliate members of the Trust are not eligible to vote or stand for election.

But, what does being a governor actually entail?

You must attend four council of governor meetings a year, as well as the annual general meeting. This is a chance to make your voice heard and pass on the views of the members in your constituency. There are monthly governor briefings which focus on topical issues and events for members, which governors are encouraged to attend to meet their members. Governors also attend community events, local colleges and open days to recruit and meet with their members.

You can then choose how you get involved by joining one of the governor subcommittees including:

Introducing the Guardians of Care Quality . . . assuring you of high standards in patient care

Trauma unit accreditation King’s Mill Hospital has officially been accredited as one of the first trauma units in the region.

As part of the East Midlands Trauma Network, which comprises a number of trauma units linked to a specialist major trauma centre, the hospital ensures patients who have suffered the most serious of injuries are given access to the best medical care in the area quicker than ever before.

‘Major trauma’ is used to describe the most severe life-threatening injuries, or when people suffer from multiple injuries.

It can include arm or leg amputation, severe knife and gunshot wounds, a major head or spinal injury. Trauma is less severe and includes injuries such as a fractured hip, ankle or minor head injury.

Good trauma care involves getting the patient to the right place at the right time for the right care. Major trauma injuries are quite rare, but the biggest causes are road accidents and stab wounds. Patients often have multiple and complex injuries and teams of experts need to respond quickly to ensure patients have the best chance of survival and recovery.

King’s Mill Hospital has a role in providing immediate, high-quality treatment to patients assessed as having major trauma before transferring them, if stable, to a major trauma centre for highly specialised treatment. The nearest major trauma centre locally is the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Patients may be transferred back to King’s Mill Hospital for ongoing care, treatment and rehabilitation once they are clinically stable.

As the independent regulator of all health and social care services in England, the role of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is to ensure the national 16 standards of care are met. A simple yet comprehensive new scheme has been created by the CQC compliance team here at the Trust to deliver this in Sherwood Forest Hospitals.

The Guardians of Care Quality will introduce an entirely new framework for achieving and evidencing sustained care quality compliance. Each of the CQC standards of care will have a nominated ‘Guardian’ to champion the outcome throughout the Trust. A streamlined observation and assessment mechanism, a

new IT solution and a network of front-line staff will all have a vital part to play.

The compliance team’s intention is that the Guardian Framework “requires minimal additional investment, re-aligns existing mechanisms rather than re-invents the wheel, and actively engages people in the sustainable delivery of care quality – rather than in simply monitoring performance.” Leaders within every specialty will be required to actively incorporate the outcomes into their day-today work.

This is an exciting programme that is already receiving strong support, and is set to provide further reassurance to patients about the care standards they will receive. Look out for more details, coming soon.

Patient co-ordinator model begins to take shape Many of you will have heard of the patient co-ordinator model which is in the process of being implemented at Sherwood Forest Hospitals. The first part of the implementation of this important programme began at the end of February in King’s Mill Hospital, with the teams becoming established by end of 2012.

The Trust remains committed to providing the Best Care, with the Best People and in the Best Place for our patients, ensuring the quality of care and its hospitals are a source of pride for their communities, and for staff.

The Trust is dedicated to putting patients at the heart of everything it does – putting the patient first.

To ensure this happens the Trust has created a support system, at the very heart of which are the patient co-ordinators and the teams which support them. The role of the patient co-ordinator combines all the previous roles of secretary, waiting list, clinic administration and outpatient preparation to provide a more seamless service for both patients and clinicians, and to prevent passing the patient between departments. One role, administrating the patient pathway from referral to discharge.

Due to the varied role of the patient coordinators, staff are undertaking an 8 module training programme to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to assist patients and health and social care partners. The feedback from those taking part in the training has

been positive and the development of standard operating procedures means that the hospitals will be able to offer a consistently first class service.

Many patient co-ordinator team members at King’s Mill Hospital have now moved into their new roles, with only waiting list and clinic administration teams remaining in their current roles until such time as the comprehensive training programme is complete.

Similarly the “go live” at Newark will take place once sufficient training has been provided and vacancies are appropriately covered or filled.

During this extensive workforce change programme the Trust held vacancies to ensure staff were redeployed into new roles wherever possible. This has resulted in an increased typing and admin backlog in some specialties.

However, the Trust is pleased to report that recent appointments mean that it now has complete establishment. Immediate work has begun to address the typing backlog to ensure that patient correspondence is dealt with within acceptable timeframes.

The Trust will be undertaking a formal review and evaluation of the service in six months’ time, and in the meantime is receiving regular updates and feedback from staff.

Celebrating National Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ week is an annual event which celebrates the incredible contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. This year the launch took place on 1 June 2012 and a number of events took place at King’s Mill and Newark hospitals.

It was an opportunity for some of the non-executive directors to work with our volunteers and a chance for the Trust to thank the volunteers for their valuable contribution that they make every day.

Over at Newark Hospital, Iain Younger, non-executive director worked alongside volunteers in the Mary Taylor Coffee Lounge. Approximately 80 volunteers also attended the Thanksgiving Service on 7 June at the Holy Trinity Church followed by refreshments in the Community and Partnership Centre adjacent to the church.

Father Michael O’Donoghue, Dean of Sherwood, conducted the service.

New support from volunteers Margaret Tye is the first of a new team of volunteers to assist in the Macmillan cancer information and support centre – known as the Pod. This is a new service for King’s Mill Hospital volunteers to help Jo Gregg, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager, in this area.

Margaret is really enjoying her new role and said: “It’s lovely working alongside Jo in the cancer pod and very satisfying knowing that I am helping patients and relatives through such a difficult time.

Sometimes a friendly chat or sign posting them towards help and support can mean such a lot to them.”

There is also a new role for volunteers to support new mothers on the maternity ward who wish to breastfeed their newborns. Jo Lincoln, the infant feeding coordinator for King’s Mill Hospital is to provide training for the volunteers. Emma Lee was the first volunteer to assist with this new role; she started on 23 June.

Cardiorespiratory appeal target reached Volunteers at King’s Mill Hospital have now reached the £85,000 fundraising campaign launched in August 2011 to buy the cardiovascular ultrasound machine.

The money was raised through a series of fundraising events throughout the year including a Christmas raffle, an art event with local artist Matthew Palmer and a £10,000 donation from the Sir John Eastwood Foundation. The appeal also received a generous donation of £20,000 from the King’s Mill Hospital volunteers with

Conference attracts regional specialists Specialists and doctors from all over the East and West Midlands gathered at King’s Mill Hospital’s conference centre to attend the Midland Rheumatology Society 2012 spring meeting.

Organised by Dr Clare Wilkinson, Consultant Rheumatologist, the 85 attendees, which included consultants, doctors in training and nurse specialists, heard presentations from Professor David Walsh, Consultant Rheumatologist and Director of the back pain unit/Director of the Arthritis Research UK Pain Centre, plus Professor Raashid Luqmani, an expert in vasculitis from the University of Oxford, and Dr Philip Helliwell from the University of Leeds who gave a presentation on psoriatic arthritis.

The hugely successful meeting also included an update from the British Society of Rheumatology, presented by Dr Chris Deighton, President Elect, alongside case presentations and research papers.

Scooter convoy’s eggs-tra special delivery For the seventh year in a row the Mansfield Roadrunners Scooter Club revved for their charity ride to King’s Mill Hospital.

The ‘Eggs to the Mill’ convoy on 25 March saw over 500 scooters from across the country travel three miles from the Talbot pub in Mansfield up to the hospital to present a cheque for over £2,000, plus hundreds of Easter eggs, to staff from the hospital’s neonatal unit and children’s ward.

During the last seven years the club has raised over £10,000 for the unit and ward. The funds are raised through a raffle and charity events with prizes donated from generous local people and businesses.

Nursery fun and games Little Millers Day Nursery, run by the Trust, held a very successful fun day on Saturday 23 June. Over £775 was raised to buy new equipment for the nursery’s home corner and for role play activities to encourage imaginative play. Jubilee babies The League of Friends (Mansfield & Sutton) presented the twenty babies born at King’s Mill Hospital over the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday with a special commemorative £5 coin.

Soloman puts staff and volunteers in the limelight

Acacia Radio visits King’s Mill Presenters from a community station in Annesley Woodhouse visited King’s Mill Hospital on 17 April to record a special show.

Acacia Radio is a registered charity based at the Acacia Centre. It is manned solely by volunteers and broadcasts a mix of music, information and entertainment to people living in Ashfield and beyond 24 hours a day.

Presenters Soloman Grundy and Ritchie Rich spoke to patients and staff and also promoted the work of the hospital’s dedicated volunteers, whilst recording the special show.

Soloman, who is himself a volunteer at the hospital, said: “The aim of the station

is to become the number one international community radio station, providing a musical, humorous and informative base for the people of Ashfield, plus ex-pats and family and friends living or on holiday abroad.

“King’s Mill Hospital is part of the community and we wanted to shout about the fantastic work volunteers do.”

UK’s top midwife visits King’s Mill’s maternity unit King’s Mill Hospital welcomed one of the UK’s top midwives to its maternity unit in the spring.

Professor Cathy Warwick CBE, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, toured the stateof-the-art unit and met with staff to discuss current services and future developments.

Alison Whitham, Head of Midwifery said: “We were very excited that Professor Warwick chose to come to King’s Mill Hospital to visit our maternity unit.

“Our facilities really are first-class and enable us to continue the excellent standards of care our doctors and midwives have provided to mums and babies over the years.

“I hope Professor Warwick’s visit gave her a flavour of some of the fantastic work going on in the unit.”

Recently we were at threat of losing our very good track record due to an individual patient choosing to delay their own pathway. Sharon and Mr Dube had already gone out of their way to meet the patient’s requests, but unfortunately the delay threatened to breach the 62 day pathway. At my request they worked hard together to ensure that the patient could have a CT scan the next day, a pre-operative visit the following week and surgery within four working days. I have been really impressed at how hard these two individuals have worked both in the best interests of the patient and the Trust.”

Sharon accepted the award on behalf of herself and Mr Dube, and the whole team – who she stressed were all involved in helping to provide patients with the best care possible.

She has been in the hospital at all times of the day and night in order to support all members of staff in feeling confident and competent when advising breastfeeding mothers. Jo has worked so hard and with such dedication to ensure that all the maternity staff are prepared for the assessment, we feel that she truly deserves some praise and recognition.”

The Trust received the prestigious Baby Friendly Award stage 2, achieving an outstanding 100% in all eight assessments! The assessor reported that it was exceptionally unusual for a service to be given a mark of 100% and in ten years they had never marked a unit so highly.

A day in the life of a …

Medical Photographer There are five people working within the clinical illustration department, including three medical photographers.

No two days the same - this morning we could be called to theatre to film an operation, lunchtime we could be photographing a badly bruised child, who may be the victim of child abuse, and later on we could be designing a patient information leaflet.

We asked one of the medical photographers to describe a typical day.

8.00am: Called to the emergency department to photograph a wound following a dog bite. The images will be used for the plastic surgeons to view prior to surgery and will go straight into the patient’s electronic record.

1.15pm: Received calls from two wards: both had patients for photography. One was for pressure ulcers and the other for a rare condition that affected the facial expression.

2.45pm: Uploaded the images to Orion.

Called to a ward to produce a film of a patient’s gait (a way that a person moves).

Film editing tomorrow hopefully.

4.20pm: Popped to Clinic 8 to take a retinal photograph (back of the eye). This is done using a highly specialised camera.

8.30am: Before I arrived back to the department, I had a request to go to genitourinary medicine to photograph genital ulcers. The images are kept within their department files, which remain anonymous to us and the rest of the Trust.

9.00am: Returned to the department.

Two junior doctors wanted copies of x-rays and CT scans of a patient. Our department provides anonymised images to staff; noone else can retrieve them from the IMPAX (x-ray) system.

9.15am: Uploaded the dog bite injury images onto the patient’s electronic record.

This enables immediate viewing for clinicians around the hospital.

4.20pm Karen Hillman, Medical Photographer takes a photo of the back of the eye 5.00pm: Should have left an hour ago but got called to film an unusual case in the operating theatre. Returned and uploaded images. Locked away all equipment.

9.30am: Received two patients at the studio.

One of the patients needed body mapping; photography of the whole of the body to record extensive moles. The second patient needed photographs taking of her breasts prior to a mastectomy. These photographs are viewed by the plastic surgeons to help make decisions about treatment.

11.00am: Uploaded all images to the electronic patient record system ‘Orion’.

I received a call from Newark Hospital requesting patient photography; which I arranged for tomorrow.

11.40am: Received a call from Sherwood Birthing Unit. A mother would like photographs to be taken of her baby who has sadly passed away.

11.55am: Arrived back at the department and printed and mounted the images of the baby for the mother. Took the photos to the Sherwood Birthing Unit before mother was discharged.

12.30pm: Called by the mortuary to

Alter ego revealed on Uniform to Work Day King’s Mill Hospital re-lived its military beginnings on Wednesday 27 June as Stuart Shaw, Deputy Ward Leader on Ward 52 at King’s Mill Hospital, carried out his day job in military uniform to mark Uniform to Work Day. This occasion celebrates the work of people in the Reserve Forces, many of whom are NHS staff like Stuart.

On one day of the year they swap their day to day work clothes for their military uniforms.

Reservists provide valuable support to the Regular Armed Forces and are deployed on operations, including Operation Herrick (Afghanistan) and Operation Ellamy (Libya). The Uniform to Work Day initiative began in 2008 when the Territorial Army celebrated its 100th anniversary, and is designed to make the contribution of the part-time force more visible.

Stuart, who serves as the Officer Commanding B Detachment, 212 Field Hospital (V), has completed tours of Northern Ireland, the first Gulf Ward in 1991 as a regular solider, and in Afghanistan in 2007 as a reservist, where he worked at camp Bastion Field Hospital as a team leader on one of the wards.

The Trust has always supported reservist staff in their undertaking of military duties, and the Uniform to Work day is a great way to raise awareness and celebrate the valuable work reservists do. It also provides an opportunity to show the public the Armed Forces are made up of people from all sections of the community.

SEXions now based at King’s Mill Hospital SEXions, the confidential service which provides sexual health advice and support for young people, has relocated to new premises at King’s Mill Hospital.

The service, previously based at Acre Connexions Centre, Kirkby in Ashfield, is now located in Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM) Department of the hospital. The move is part of the service’s integration into Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, though the team remains an integral part of the local community.

Sexions works with all young people in the Ashfield and Mansfield areas to offer an extensive confidential service including: • Advice on general sexual health, including teenage pregnancy & sexually transmitted infections

Patients who need assistance or encouragement taking fluids are now clearly identified with the use of a jug with a red lid. This is following on from the success of the red tray meal system.

The red jugs are being piloted on Ward 51, which is a health care of the elderly ward. The bright coloured lids serve as a reminder to the team and visitors of the patients the importance of hydration in the elderly. If a person has a red lid on their jug it should act as a prompt for anyone to offer them a drink and assist them.

The pilot on Ward 51 is being extremely well received by all. The ward created posters and a display highlighting the benefits of good hydration such as reduced incidence of pressure sores, better kidney function, improved oral health and reduced length of hospital stay to name but a few.

If the pilot proves successful the red lids will be rolled out across the Trust.
