I have chosen to theme my portfolio on architecture as it makes up a large part of my A level coursework and is something that has always captured my attention while travelling. Choosing to portray architecture from a variety of mediums and styles reflects the immense detail incorporated into these designs, whilst reflecting the feelings that can be evoked. I hope my appreciation of architecture is apparent and I have portrayed this through my collection of artwork.

>> PENCIL DRAWINGS AND SKETCHES

Through this collection of pencil work, I aimed to portray architecture I came across on the street, or through trips. Two of my pieces explored the importance of shading, depth and detail, whilst the remaining were quick sketches that developed my understanding of perspective.

>> MIXED MEDIA

Gathering photographs from my local area I explored different ways to represent architecture. Using acrylic, collage and ink, I used various techniques to create atmosphere, whilst taking inspiration from artists Lucy Jones and Rob Wilson.

>> OIL PAINTINGS

For this piece I used oil paints to capture the smoothness of the stone and to develop the correct shading. Enhancing colours on this painting allowed me to focus on areas of the building that made it unique or had specific details that caught my attention.

>> TRADITIONAL OILS

A visit to Paris broadened my appreciation of different styles of architecture and resulted in this traditional oil painting, being inspired by the detail I captured in this photograph.

>> EXPERIMENTING WITH TEXTURE AND COLOUR

During the course of work experience I gathered a range of photographs and was inspired to produce an acrylic, abstract piece to reflect the modern nature of the architecture. Mixing thickener with acrylic paint allowed me to experiment with texture and lighting, something I thoroughly enjoyed.

>> 3D MODEL

I created this model for a history project and used a variety of materials to construct a medieval castle. To capture the necessary historical detailing I used polystyrene blocks which provided a base onto which I was able to fix a variety of materials including straw, grit, moss and matchsticks. Liquid resin formed the moat.

>> MY STREET

When approaching the ‘My Street’ task I chose to begin by taking a walk around my village, reflecting on what my street means to me. Living in a rural area provides an atmosphere of tranquility in which wildlife and nature flourish. The peace and comfort this provides is what I wanted to portray in my piece. Using oils, I applied paint thickly to create texture and bring to life certain qualities of my street. As I layered the paints I was able to capture the warmth of the sunlight and the calmness of the breeze that I felt on the day I took my inspiration photographs. I felt this style of painting was the most suitable to express the feel of the old English architecture and brick walls which are not perfectly straight, but instead are damaged or weather worn. The quietness and calmness that comes from living in the countryside is what makes my street particularly important to me as that is what I find so comforting.
