Bear necessities for our charity

Megan Kirby was given just six months to live before she underwent a liver transplant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in December 1994, at the age of 61. Eager to give something back for the ‘gift of life’ she received 21 years ago, Megan joined the QEHB Liver Patients Support Group. For the past 20 years she and her husband John – as patient and carer – have spoken to other patients undergoing assessment for liver transplant at the hospital. Liver recipient transplant co-ordinator, Peter Ashcroft, said: “Numerous patients have commented to me over the years how much they have enjoyed Megan’s talks and how she helped to give them courage and confidence as they began their own liver transplant journey.” Now aged 82, Megan is intending to take life a little easier – see page 13 for her story.

Mr Bear, the mascot for QEHB Charity, is getting in training for this year’s half marathon. Umar Hussain, Clinical Research Project Assistant at the QEHB will be donning the costume for the 13.1 mile-long run on the 18 October. The charity’s supporters will be taking on the challenge to raise money and awareness of how the funds can make a real difference to life at the Trust. Umar said: “I’m raising money to fund research at the QE which is a vital part of improving care for patients, so I really hope people dig deep and support the cause, despite the amusing costume!”

Award nominations recognise hundreds The Trust’s annual Best in Care Awards has received over 500 nominations – the highest number of nominations since the awards began in 2009. The awards, which are in their seventh year, aim to recognise those staff, members and volunteers who make an outstanding contribution to the Trust. In total some 520 entries (over 150 more than in previous years) were made by staff, volunteers, patients and their relatives. Nominations for the awards topped the 500 mark just days before the submission deadline, with an exciting surge on the final day. Amongst the awards will be the coveted ‘Member of the Year’ honour which celebrates the contribution that foundation trust members make to the hospital. Last year’s winner was ‘Welcomer’ Rabia Khanum who, like so many of our members, gets a great deal of personal satisfaction from

giving up a few hours each week to help our patients. With over 500 nominations to plough through, the judging panel will have the toughest task yet to whittle the list down to identify this year's finalists. UHB’s Chief Executive Julie Moore, pictured, said: “Every year I am newly humbled to hear about the selfless efforts of so many people who contribute to the smooth-running of this organisation. “I am staggered at the number of nominations we have received this year; what a fantastic demonstration of the affection people have for our staff, members and volunteers.” When the judges have completed their almost impossible task, the finalists will be revealed in the November edition of news@ QEHB. Finalists will then be invited to a glittering awards ceremony in November, where the winners will be announced.
