New Day Surgery Unit O

ur new Day Surgery Unit at DRI opened its doors in August offering state-of-the-art facilities to patients requiring day surgery.

The unit comprises a newly-relocated and modernised Theatre Assessment Unit, a refurbished dedicated Children’s Surgical Unit, and a new-build Day Surgery Unit.

These modern facilities mean that we can carry out more day surgery with the flexibility to increase the type of procedures we can perform on a day-case basis, plus the added benefit of a much-improved environment for staff and patients.

The unit offers two single-sex bays – each with spaces for six patients – plus two single rooms with en-suite facilities giving patients as much privacy as possible during their short stay. The single rooms allow pre-operative preparations to be carried out and also enable patients at high risk of infections – for example, because they have lower immunity – to be cared for.

There is also a comfortable lounge for patients awaiting discharge.

The additional facilities and extended opening times (from 7.30 to 8.00pm, Monday to Friday) mean that more patients benefit from having shorter stays in hospital following their procedures.

New rehab centre ‘Blessed’

by Brian Theatrical legend Brian Blessed left his mark at Montagu Hospital as he helped to bury two time capsules in the courtyard of the Fred & Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre.

One of which had been filled by children from St John the Baptist C of E Primary school and the second by staff and volunteers at Montagu Hospital.

After helping to bury the time capsules, Brian Blessed was keen to highlight his love for his home town. “It is very emotional being back in Mexborough,” he said. “Mexborough is where I was born. I owe a lot to the town and nothing would have stopped me from being here today.”

of Fred & Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially opened the Fred & Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre in October.

T

he £3.8m, 58-bed centre at Montagu Hospital is the first of its kind in the UK and uses a model of care that has proved very successful in the Netherlands. It has been named in memory of the Mexborough couple Fred & Ann Green, who left a large legacy to be used for the benefit of local patients after selling their successful business to what subsequently became ASDA. Patients over 18 who are recovering from stroke, road traffic accidents, amputations, serious falls and other conditions or events, receive intensive therapeutic, medical and nursing care specially designed to meet their own individual needs.

The rehabilitation programme runs seven days a week, from 7am to 7pm, and is delivered by a team that includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants among others.

Unlike a traditional hospital unit, every aspect of the centre has been specially designed and

built to promote rehabilitation and to support patients in returning to ordinary daily life.

Features include a training bathroom, training kitchen, training bedroom and even a training laundry, as well as an IT suite and quiet spaces where patients can spend time reading or practising other skills as part of their recovery.

Burying the time capsules

Patients will wear their own clothes and be encouraged to be up and about all day, using the kitchen facilities to make hot drinks, breakfast or snacks as if they were at home. There are normal household stairs and carpets, as well as the shallower steps usually found in hospitals, to help patients get used to walking on different surfaces in readiness for going home.

There are even two flats in the centre where patients and a relative or carer can spend their final days before leaving hospital to get used to living in a normal domestic environment again after their illness or injury.

The cost has been jointly funded 50-50 by the Fred & Ann Green Legacy and the Trust.

Smoking wardens to remind people that hospitals are smoke-free

W

e are saying ‘stop’ to smokers on hospital grounds.

People are being reminded that smoking will no longer be tolerated and we now have wardens asking smokers to move out of hospital grounds for their cigarettes.

It’s hoped the move will mean that fewer people will smoke on our grounds.

Heather Keane, Assistant Director of Nursing for Patient Experience and Quality, said: “This is not about preaching antismoking messages to people, but about people realising that our hospitals are smoke-free environments. Our staff and the public have been consulted on this matter and the vast majority gave it their support, so we are keen to improve the hospital environment for everybody.

“Many people can be seen smoking outside our sites, often close to entrances or under open windows. Cigarette smoke is obviously not something we want floating onto our wards or being breathed by our patients, so we are taking these steps to reinforce the fact that smoking is not allowed on our grounds.

“If people want to smoke, we will be asking them to do so from the nearby public footpaths that are well supplied with bins.

“Not only will this help to improve the air quality in the hospitals, it will improve the look of our sites for our patients and visitors as well as reduce the amount of cleaning up of ash and cigarette stubs that we currently have to do on a daily basis.”

We have worked with the police and council on the initiative and have the full support of local public health commissioners and GP-led clinical commissioning groups.

Just one look!

We’ve come up with an innovative new menu that makes it even easier for patients to choose their hospital meals.

T

he colourful 20-page booklet called the Patients’ Bedside Menu has been given the thumbs-up by patients and staff alike.

What sets it apart from traditional hospital menus is that patients can see at a glance exactly what their meals will look like over a two-week period. Each page contains photographs of individual meals, including the chef’s choice, a cold choice and sweets/desserts.

Patients can also see what is available in the ‘out-of-hours’ snack boxes provided where someone misses their usual mealtime – for example, because they were fasting before surgery or were admitted to hospital late at night.

It also contains advice on healthy eating, a question-and-answers section with a dietitian, plus a reminder for patients of the importance of cleaning hands before eating.

We wanted to complement this process by producing our own patient menu containing pictures of the meals we make. It’s not just a list of meal options. We’ve taken the opportunity to include advice on healthy eating and hand hygiene.”

Doncaster patient Eric Eaton said: “Before I came into hospital I didn’t know what the food was going to be like. Now I can see the food and decide what I would like to eat. It’s reassuring and a good idea.”

Every patient who is admitted to our hospitals for an overnight stay is given a copy of the menu which they keep for the duration of their stay in hospital. They can even take it with them when they are discharged from hospital.

This encourages patients to carry on with the nutritional advice contained in the menu once they are in their own homes.

Over 6,000 AAA scans so far M

ore than 1,500 South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw men have referred themselves for a simple scan that can save lives; another 4,500 have been scanned after being invited for the test as part of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening programme, since it launched this year.

The service was publicly launched in our area in July and is part of a national screening programme to reduce the number of older men dying from AAAs. Mainly affecting men aged 65 and over, AAAs cause around 6,000 deaths a year. A free and simple ultrasound scan can identify aneurysms and help save lives.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals provides the screening programme to people across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

All men in their 65th year are being contacted by the screening team and invited for the scan. Men aged 65 can also refer themselves for screening and more than 1,500 have already done so after reading

case studies and articles about AAAs. One such story was that of Rotherham man, Roderick Hillman, who died suddenly and unexpectedly of a ruptured AAA on Mother’s Day last year.

His daughter, Alisha March, supports the AAA screening programme and said: “If he’d have had the scan then dad would still be here. He didn’t need to die, but if his story makes people take notice and have the scan and it saves even one life, it would make him happy.”

Staff ‘Star’ Awards 2013!

In September we held our DBH Stars Annual Awards.

The awards were presented by BBC Look North’s Clare Frisby and they were a real celebration of the enormous good work that NHS staff and volunteers do for patients and colleagues.

Nursing Times Award An innovative programme to inspire ward staff and transform patient care scooped a major national title at the Nursing Times Awards 2013.

T

he ‘Changing Attitudes, Improving Outcomes’ project was launched in December 2011 to address related issues that were resulting in negative patient feedback, low staff morale and high sickness absence rates on a particular ward.

The programme had a dramatic effect with huge benefits both for patients and the staff.

Feedback from patients transformed and the number of HR issues and work days lost to stress, depression or anxiety plummeted. There were no more formal complaints from patients and only one informal complaint.

Although the ward involved no longer exists in its previous format due to the launch of a new service for people needing emergency medical assessment and treatment, the staff – and their patients – are still benefiting from the programme. They are practising what they have learnt in their new roles on other wards at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Patients on the ward commented that some staff had personal conversations in front of them and left things like water and call bells out of reach. Meanwhile, many of the ward staff were suffering from depression, stress and anxiety that led to them needing time off work. There were also other HR issues.

It was clear action was needed so, supported by managers, the ward worked together with the Trust’s training and education team on an intensive improvement programme involving individual coaching for each member of staff.

Nurses, healthcare assistants and other members of the team could speak openly and honestly in a safe environment about the issues they were facing at work and at home, and how this was affecting their health and wellbeing.

They also took part in simulations where they became the patients while colleagues from training and education played ward staff and re-enacted the circumstances that were leading to specific complaints. It enabled ward staff to see how what they thought was a harmless bit of chit-chat with colleagues about their home lives could leave patients feeling ignored, excluded and like they didn’t matter.

Time to Change pledge We have made a formal pledge to stop the stigma associated with mental illness as part of the national Time to Change campaign.

We signed up to the national Time to Change pledge on World Mental Health Day (10 October).

Time to Change is England’s biggest mental health anti-stigma campaign, run by the charities Mind and Mike Pinkerton signing the pledge

Rethink Mental Illness.

As part of our Time to Change pledge, we are taking action to: raise staff awareness and understanding; work with specialist partner organisations to support patients who have both physical and mental health conditions; improve the services available for women with postnatal depression; and train managers on how to support hospital staff with stress or other mental health conditions.

Integrated Discharge Team

Team shortlisted for national award The Integrated Discharge Team reached the finals of the Nursing Times Awards but were up against very stiff competition in the Team of the Year category.

T

he team’s innovative service was set up in January 2012, for those patients who are medically well enough to leave hospital but who need some additional support afterwards – for example, from district nursing, community-based therapists or social care. The team included nurses, allied health professionals like physiotherapists

and occupational therapists, and social workers. It involved staff employed by this Trust, Doncaster Council and Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) work together as part of the same team.

Their work is based on evidence that shows that patients make a better recovery if they leave hospital as soon as they’re well enough

to do so, provided they have the right support in place. People are more likely to regain and maintain their independence the earlier they return to their own home or a suitable nursing/ care home. Just as importantly, however, they may also need some ongoing care such as physiotherapy or visits from a district nurse so they don’t end up being readmitted to hospital for emergency care.

Protecting our patients from flu We have made a fantastic start to reducing the spread of flu this season by vaccinating as many of our healthcare workers as possible during October and November. By 18 November, 78.4% of all frontline staff had already had their flu jab!

Each year during October, before the flu virus becomes active, we launch our Flu Fighting campaign to vaccinate the 4,000-plus staff who have direct patient contact.

“We offer the flu vaccine to those staff in frontline roles where they regularly come into contact with patients. These include our doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants, physiotherapists, and also staff in portering and cleaning roles, ward clerks and receptionists – the list is endless. Having the jab is voluntary and it’s fantastic that so many staff are willing to be vaccinated.”

You can help us stop the spread of infection

Our award-winning Occupational Health & Wellbeing ‘Flu Fighter Team’ have been out on the wards and patient areas across DRI, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital vaccinating staff. They have also travelled to Retford Hospital, Chequer Road Clinic and Cantley Health Centre to catch as many staff as possible.

In 2012/13, a total of 80.9% of our frontline staff got vaccinated against the flu virus. This year we aim to do even better.

Families with loved ones on Ward G5 at DRI now have a calm and pleasant place to stay thanks to the determination of staff and the generosity of local people and businesses.

T

he ward’s Family Room has been completely transformed and offers ‘home from home’ accommodation for families of patients being treated for a range of gynaecology conditions including ovarian, cervical and breast cancers.

The refurbishment was a result of a twoyear fundraising effort by staff within the gynaecology department, led by Clinical Nurse Specialists Jo Mann and Wendy Lee. Their aim was to turn their drab and tired Family Room into a bright, comfortable and quiet place for patients and their families to stay together within the busy ward.

The fundraising project exceeded all expectations, meaning a separate Quiet Room could also be created. It’s kitted out

with a small kitchen, comfortable sofa-bed and chairs for patients, their friends and relatives to relax with a hot drink or fix themselves something to eat. The spacious Family Room features a TV, en-suite with shower/toilet, recliner chair and double sofabed for relatives to sleep overnight.

Jo Mann, Clinical Nurse Specialist for GynaeOncology, said: “For those patients who become very ill and need to come into hospital, it’s important that they are cared for in an environment that helps their family and friends to stay with them in a private and comfortable place.”

Not surprisingly, the new Family Room and Quiet Room are very popular and make a big difference to patients and their families.

What makes you tick, hobbies, interests?

When I’m not working, I enjoy attending music events. As a fan, this has taken me to other countries to see artists play, which fuels another passion I have for travel.

I’m also passionate about art and in particular sculpture. I have a degree in sculpture and have had some of my work displayed in the British Museum whilst I was at university. Although I rarely have time to make my own artwork anymore, I like to keep up with the latest exhibitions.

My favourite place to visit is Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

What made you become a governor?

I first came into contact with the Board of Governors in my role as an account manager at BT Health. The Trust was given to me as an account, so I attended the Annual General Meeting and many of the Governor Board meetings to develop my understanding of the NHS and learn about my local hospital.

After confirming there would be no conflict of interests, I decided I wanted to stand for election so that I could put to good use all my knowledge gained of good practice at other NHS trusts, my skills and experience from the corporate world, and my creative flair.

Many of my friends and family, including myself, have been patients at the hospital so I have a keen interest to see it continue to do well in the current difficult economic environment.

Is the role what you expected?

There’s a lot more opportunity to get involved in the work carried out in the Trust than I expected and I’ve been extremely impressed by the time and effort dedicated by the Governors of Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

Choose health services

wisely this winter Our Emergency Departments at DRI and Bassetlaw Hospital have already seen record numbers of patients.Yet an audit in September at DRI’s department found that more than 20 per cent of people attending didn’t actually need emergency hospital treatment.

Here are some tips to help you choose health services wisely this winter.

Self-care – A lot of illnesses or symptoms can be treated at home with the help of a well-stocked medicine cabinet and plenty of rest. Stock up on paracetamol or aspirin, antidiarrhoeal medicine and rehydration sachets, cough medicine, indigestion remedy, plaster, a thermometer and an antiseptic cream.

NHS Choices and 111 – If you’re not sure what kind of care you need, you’ll find lots of useful information and a free symptom checker online at www.nhs.uk. You can also ring 111 for free, confidential advice and information.

Pharmacies – Your local pharmacist / chemist is a highly-trained healthcare professional who will be happy to advise you on common illnesses and the medicines you need to treat them. Most now have a quiet, private area where you can speak in confidence away from other customers.

GPs – Your own GP is the best person to speak to about persistent health problems and illnesses that won’t go away. These include persistent coughs, joint pain and long-term symptoms that haven’t suddenly deteriorated to a point where you are extremely unwell.

Pioneering seven-day service in Bassetlaw wins national award

T

he 21-bed Assessment & Treatment Centre (ATC) at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop is one of the services leading the way nationally as the NHS moves towards seven-day working rather than the traditional system where weekend staffing levels are lower.

The model of care was co-designed by close collaboration between clinicians from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals and from the GP-led NHS Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group, which holds the local NHS budget and funds the service.

Its success at improving quality of care and reducing mortality has seen the two organisations presented with the Best in Partnership Working Award by NHS England Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh at a national conference on seven-day working (16 November).

Major reviews including Sir Bruce Keogh’s recent investigation into high mortality rates at 14 English hospital trusts have found that, across the NHS, patient outcomes tend to be worse at weekends. It is thought that in part this is because there are fewer senior clinicians in hospitals at weekends, and some diagnostic tests and assessments are not available.

The ATC at Bassetlaw Hospital is led by consultant physicians who have a greater hands-on role seeing patients and deciding how their care should be managed every day of the week. The team also includes nursing staff and other health professionals and the ATC has rapid access to diagnostic tests and scans, including CT, with experienced clinical therapists and pharmacists providing support for timely patient care seven days a week.

On average, the length of time patients spend in hospital has also reduced from 7.7 days in 2010/11 to 6.5 days in 2012/13.

The ATC has been rolled out gradually at Bassetlaw Hospital over 12-18 months and has been fully operational since summer 2013 when building work to create a new ambulatory care facility preventing unnecessary hospital admissions was completed.

More about the Assessment & Treatment Centre: The ATC cares for patients who need longer periods of assessment or treatment than are provided within an A&E department.

It comprises two main areas: ambulatory care and inpatient beds.

The Ambulatory Care facility prevents unnecessary hospital admissions by enabling patients to come on a day-care outpatient basis for treatment or monitoring that was once only provided to inpatients. This includes blood transfusions, intravenous antibiotics for infections like cellulitis, and medication to treat deep vein thrombosis.

There are four treatment areas and two consultant clinic rooms in Ambulatory Care, along with a comfortable seating area for patients waiting to be seen.

The 21 inpatient beds are intended for people who need a short stay of up to 72 hours in hospital.

It means that patients who arrive at Bassetlaw Hospital needing longer periods of assessment or treatment than is provided in an A&E department receive the same high quality of care no matter what day of the week it is.

The new system has been accompanied by a reduction in mortality at Bassetlaw Hospital. The Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR), which compares actual and expected deaths, has reduced from 110 in 2010/11 to 97 in 2012/13.

at World Transplant Games!

Ben Pacey, Senior Physiotherapy Assistant based at Montagu, took part in this year’s World Transplant Games held in Durban, South Africa – and came away with a stunning six medals, including five golds, one silver and two world records!

T

he rest of Team GB & Northern Ireland also excelled, ending up top in the medal table of all the 55 countries taking part.

The Games are for athletes who have received organ transplant. Ben was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia at the age of 17 and underwent a bone marrow transplant shortly afterwards.

A keen swimmer whose medal success in Durban saw him nominated for the title of Male Athlete of the Games, Ben also swam for the GB transplant team at the 2009 World Transplant Games in Australia.

His achievements were recognised when he was chosen to carry the Olympic torch in Scunthorpe for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Ben said: “The Games are a fantastic way to promote the Organ Donation Register and life after transplant. They give so many people the

opportunity to do things they wouldn’t have dreamed of.

“The emphasis of both Games was very much about taking part and showing off your new lease of life thanks to your donor. I would say the highlight for me is meeting so many inspirational people and sharing your experiences. I have made so many lifelong friends through both Transplant Games.”

Jane Tute, Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation, said: “More than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1,000 a year – three a day – will die because there are not enough organs available. Only 31% of the population are on the donation register, though almost all of us would take an organ if we needed.

ongratulations to the Service Department’s ‘Amazing 7’ for completing a gruelling fitness contest known as the Corporate Global Challenge, which saw them walking more than 12,000km.

G

overnors have been involved in a range of work over the last few months. The Health and Care of Adults sub-committee looked at medical equipment and the patient environment, while the Health and Care of Young People sub-committee focused on patient safety and the new Paediatric Advance Warning Score system.

The team’s mission was for each of them to walk at least 10,000 steps a day for 16 weeks.

The aim of the Corporate Global Challenge is to highlight the benefits of increasing physical activity to improve the health and wellbeing of staff around the world. This year 37,743 teams of seven participated from over 100 countries.

Our ‘Amazing 7’ managed to clock up 19,725,126 steps in total in their 16 weeks.

That’s an incredible 12,624km – the same distance as walking from Doncaster to Bali.

They came third in the NHS / Health Provider mini-league. They also finished in 22nd place out of the 4,703 UK teams, and 330rd out of the 37,432 teams who took part across the world, a magnificent achievement.

Doncaster NHS Community Carol Service

hristmas is almost upon us and to celebrate this joyous time the Doncaster Minster is once again hosting the Doncaster NHS community carol service.

17 December so come along and join in the carol-singing, as well as readings by staff from the various NHS organisations in Doncaster. All welcome.

The service is free, open to everyone and it’s an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas in the Minster’s magnificent setting. This year we are having seasonal music again from Doncaster Concert Band and a medley from a choir of local NHS staff.

At its quarterly meeting in September, the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Alan Armstrong as a Non-executive Director and received a presentation from the Trust’s external auditors.

The Board of Governors also received updates on the work being undertaken to address the issue of smoking on Trust sites. A Governor Timeout was also held in September, which looked at discharge pathways, the role played by nonexecutive directors, pressure ulcers and stroke services.

Annual Members’ Meeting The Trust’s Annual Members’ Meeting was held on 24 September 2013 at the Ivanhoe Centre in Conisbrough. Thank you to all our members who attended. Presentations were delivered on our performance last year, our new AAA screening service and the new robotic pharmacy system. There were also displays and stands on a wide variety of topics, including: the Trust’s new Strategic Direction 2013/17; the iHospital IT programme; and our new Dementia Strategy.

Seven-day working benefits cancer patients People with cancer attending Doncaster Royal Infirmary for urgent medical care now have greater access to cancer specialists, as a new seven-day working arrangement is introduced.

The pilot scheme, funded by Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, runs until March 2014. The extended service means that cancer patients and those on anticancer treatments, who become unwell or develop a new problem with their treatment or the disease, will have specialist cancer input into their care every day of the week.

Patients who present in the Trust’s Emergency Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary will receive prompt access to a specialist acute oncology nurse, between 8.00am to 8.00pm, including bank holidays. Patients attending Bassetlaw Hospital will benefit too by having an extended telephone service outside the current 9.00am to 5.00pm acute oncology service.

The seven-day working arrangement started on 30 September 2013. A specialist acute oncology nurse will attend the patient, assess and manage their condition, and coordinate a range of different experts in emergency and cancer care. The aim of the service is to provide patients with faster management of their care, helping avoid unnecessary tests and investigations.

Lesley Barnett, Lead Cancer Nurse, said: “As cancer management becomes increasingly complex, moving to seven-day working means that patients and carers can have greater confidence in the care they receive every single day.”

The acute oncology team consists of doctors and nurses who work closely with and respond to referrals from emergency care, assessment units and ward-based teams, within DRI.

Best Dementia Hospital

Award Winners We have won a prestigious national award for the way we accommodate people living with dementia.

A

t the 4th National Dementia Care Awards, held on 6 November, we came out on top in the ‘Best Dementia Hospital’ category.

The award was received in recognition of the services provided to people living with dementia when they spend time at our hospitals for treatment or care.

Chief Executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, Mike Pinkerton said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and I am extremely proud of the staff who have put in so much hard work in recent years to improve the service we provide to people living with dementia.

“The work has seen patients’ conditions improving sooner and a reduction in time patients living with dementia are spending in hospital.”

“Caring for patients with dementia in a busy hospital environment is always going to be a challenge, and one that is growing with the significant rise of dementia in the population we serve today.

“However, people in Doncaster and Bassetlaw can now be even more confident that the levels of care they or their relatives will receive

will be amongst the highest in the country.”

The National Dementia Care Award comes after we made a number of changes to the services for people at the hospitals who have dementia or delirium. The work began after we made a commitment to improving the provision for people living with dementia and joining the ‘Dementia Pledge’. We also joined the Dementia Action Alliance in February this year.

By making subtle changes to wards, such as having pictures and clocks on walls, adding dining rooms and kitchens and using china tea cups instead of plastic, we now offer patients a hospital experience that as closely as possible mirrors being at home.

En-suite rooms, open living spaces that encourage patients to move away from their beds and specially designed dining rooms have also been introduced to the Mallard Ward in the Gresley Unit.

The work has seen patients’ conditions improving sooner and a reduction in time patients living with dementia are spending in hospital. Dementia-friendly features will now also be incorporated in all relevant wards in our hospitals as part of a ward refurbishment programme.

Over the next few years, we intend to change both our hospital’s environments and culture to deliver a truly ‘dementia-friendly’ service to our patients, relatives and carers.

A&E team’s lifesaving work

mergency Department staff at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital have significantly reduced the mortality rate from a life-threatening condition that can see patients’ condition deteriorate at a frightening speed.

Providing intensive training on how to spot the early signs of sepsis – and what to do about it – has seen the survival rate for identified patients attending the Emergency Department increase from 75.0% in January to 87.1% currently. That means around 12 more lives potentially being saved for every 100 people with sepsis.

Sepsis occurs when the body goes into overdrive in response to an infection. The immune system triggers a chain of reactions including widespread swelling and clotting problems. This can interfere with vital organs like the heart, liver and kidneys, eventually causing them to start shutting down due to lack of oxygen.

It is highly treatable in its early stages but, once it becomes severe, between 30-50 per cent of people die within one month of diagnosis. It causes approximately 1,400 deaths worldwide every day – more than breast cancer, prostate cancer and HIV/Aids combined.

A bundle of care interventions known as the ‘Sepsis 6’, including antibiotics and intravenous (IV) fluids, are known to double the chance of patients surviving the condition – if delivered within the first few hours of onset. Yet many health professionals don’t have intensive training in how to spot the early signs of sepsis.

That’s why staff at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust launched a dedicated education programme, giving Emergency Department staff the highest priority.

Since launching in January, around 100 of the staff in the Emergency Departments (ED) at DRI and Bassetlaw Hospital have completed the training. There is now a sepsis team with specialist knowledge within the ED who can train other members of the department.

The percentage of identified patients receiving all six interventions within one hour has increased to almost 100%. Survival rates 28 days after diagnosis have increased from 75.0% to 87.1% and length of stay in hospital has decreased from a peak of 37 days in January to around six on average.

infection and rates appear to be increasing worldwide, so it’s very important that health staff know how to spot the early signs and the interventions that can help stop it becoming more severe.

“The Emergency Department team are usually the first point of contact for people who become seriously ill so making sure they have the skills and knowledge to deliver the Sepsis 6 within an hour of arrival can have a major impact on mortality rates, as this programme has shown. They have done a fantastic job, which is not only saving lives – it is also reducing length of stay, which shows patients with sepsis aren’t getting as ill or needing to spend as long in hospital.”

Scott Nixon, Charge Nurse and a member of the Emergency Department sepsis team, said they had found the whole experience inspiring and rewarding. “It’s not just the patients who have benefited,” he said.

Up to 135,000 European and 215,000 American deaths occur as a result of severe sepsis every year.

Sepsis is known to kill approximately 1,400 people worldwide every day; it’s thought the real figure could be up to 50% higher, however, as deaths are often attributed to other causes.

The number of severe sepsis cases is set to grow at a rate of 1.5% per annum.

Sepsis is the primary cause of death from infection. 30–50% of patients with severe sepsis die within one month of diagnosis.

Sepsis causes more deaths than prostate cancer, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS combined.

In the developing world, sepsis accounts for 60 to 80 per cent of lost lives per year in childhood.

Patients surviving sepsis have twice the risk of death in the subsequent five years compared with hospitalised controls.

Rapid intervention for sepsis can halve the risk of dying.

Hospitalisations for sepsis have more than doubled over the last 10 years.

The sepsis team has also enjoyed the way medical and nursing staff have worked in partnership on this project, and the fact we’ve all gained greater expertise in what can be an extremely serious condition.”

Christmas 1992 at Bassetlaw Hospital

No, dear reader, we are not returning to the time of Charles Dickens. The Victoria we have in mind is the Victoria Hospital, Worksop, and in this issue we will take a backward glance at how Christmas was spent there in 1944, just before World War II ended.

or the townspeople in general, despite the ongoing hostilities, almost all the ingredients for a satisfying Yuletide were in reasonably good supply. Once again, so far as game and poultry were concerned, the importance of ordering early was brought home. For those unsuccessful in their quest, beef, mutton and pork were available in liberal quantity.

Sunday was a free-and-easy day, and in the evening service patients and nurses did a round of the various wards and led carol-singing. Thanks to generous gifts and the results of various efforts, battle casualties who were patients in the hospital for Christmas were provided with a remarkable time.

The spirit of Christmas was in ample evidence at the Victoria Hospital, where, on Saturday evening (Christmas Day was the following Monday) the activities commenced with a cinema show under ENSA auspices (ENSA

On Christmas morning, the Mayor and Mayoress of Worksop were visitors with presents for all patients, as were the Hospital Chairman and his wife, who was Chairman of the Women’s Special Efforts.

For dinner, patients enjoyed turkey, pork, plum pudding, mince pies and . . . beer, straight from the cask! To tempt the palates of civilian patients there were turkey, goose and pork, also followed with plum pudding and mince pies. Following dinner, parties were held in the various wards for service cases, and there were 50 cigarettes and a monetary gift of 10 shillings (50p) for each man, provided out of the Christmas fund.

In the evening, a pleasing entertainment was presented by Mr George Ball and his concert party, whose visit was greatly appreciated. Boxing Day brought another round of good things. Parties took place in the wards, and in the evening a special treat was the visit under ENSA auspices of the ‘Nights on the Volga’ concert party, with Medvedeff and his Balalaika Orchestra, of stage and radio fame, and featuring singers and dancers.

The domestic staff had their dinner on the same evening, and on the following night enjoyable entertainment was provided by the nursing personnel ... in songs, sketches and monologues. On Thursday night the festivities concluded with a dinner for members of the nursing staff.

Entertainment was provided by singers, including Master John Brunt (the wellknown Worksop boy soprano), specialist dancers, a conjurer and comedian Arthur Critchley ‘Little Arthur’.

For our pictures we have fast-forwarded almost half a century to Christmas 1992, and you can see that over the years Bassetlaw Hospital had not lost its appetite for fun and entertainment.

Worksop and District Live at Home Scheme Worksop and District Live at Home Scheme was set up by a group of local people in 1994. We aim to provide emotional and practical support to older people (over 60) living in their own homes independently. We have around 30 volunteers, our scheme is aimed at reducing isolation and loneliness to the people living in Worksop and surrounding areas.
