I think you should all be immensely proud that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated our hospitals as ‘Good’ and highlighted a number of areas of outstanding practice.

We, along with all other NHS Trusts, continuously monitor our progress against a series of targets that are set both nationally and locally.

I would like to thank and congratulate you all for what is a huge achievement and testament to your hard work and commitment to our patients.

“The rating is a fitting testament to the vision, hard work, professionalism and compassion of all our staff and volunteers.”

CQC rate Trust as Good with outstanding End of Life Care Following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission, England’s chief inspector of hospitals rated the Trust as Good with Outstanding End of Life Care.

The rating highlights that both the Royal and Broadgreen are providing services that are safe, caring, effective and well-led.

Inspectors reported that “there was a positive culture throughout the trust. Staff were proud of the work they did and proud of the services they provided”.

The CQC recognised that care and treatment was delivered “by caring, committed, and compassionate staff”. They highlighted that “staff in all disciplines treated patients and those close to them with dignity and respect”.

In palliative and end of life care services, the report highlighted numerous stories that demonstrated the compassion, kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff delivering care and treatment. Broadgreen Hospital was rated ‘Good’ in all areas.

Whilst the report highlighted many positives, it also highlighted some areas where we can improve.

Bed occupancy rates trust-wide, delayed transfers of care and discharges continue to have an impact on the management of patient care throughout the hospital.

“We received outstanding feedback from a number of our services including; the collaborative working in the emergency department; quality of care from our end of life services and best practice and innovative ways of working within critical care.

“The rating of outstanding for palliative and end of life care at the Trust is excellent news for the people of Liverpool, who benefit from the high level of care provided for both patients and families at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

“Whilst the report highlighted many positives it is important to address areas we can improve. Our bed occupancy rates trust-wide, delayed transfers of care and discharges continue to have an impact on the flow of patients throughout the hospital; this is something we are working closely with health and social care colleagues to improve, ahead of our move to the new Royal.”

Inspectors highlighted our well-established and wellstaffed palliative care directorate which works closely with other organisations to improve the quality of end of life services in Merseyside.

•E mergency Department Inspectors highlighted our collaborative work with local support groups and charities to provide services for sections of the population such as homeless and victims of domestic abuse.

•C ritical Care Critical care guidance that, once approved, would be adopted across both the local and national critical care networks.

• I nformation Technology They also found innovative and collaborative working highlighted in the use of enhanced IT systems which are used to monitor and track the most unwell and vulnerable patients.

Royal recognised for work in community We’ve have been recognised nationally alongside Carillion for helping to build stronger Merseyside communities.

The Trust has been shortlisted in the Health Service Journal’s Improving Environmental and Social Sustainability category for the work it does alongside Carillion to support local employment, benefit local businesses and provide valuable work placements and apprenticeships.

The HSJ Awards recognise achievements across the NHS. This year 1412 entries were submitted with 229 being shortlisted for an award.

The Improving Environmental and Social Sustainability award received 20 entries, with nine being shortlisted.

We’ve have been recognised nationally alongside Carillion for helping to build stronger Merseyside communities

Since work began in February 2014, 2,412 local workers have been employed on site, with 575 of those workers coming from local areas with high unemployment rates. 115 apprenticeships and 176 work experience placements have also been provided on site.

Carillion has established a number of successful schemes including two upskilling programmes, developed with Liverpool Community College and more recently UCATT to provide local people with refresher health and safety training, and help them back into work. From these courses, 20 people have been employed, some on the new Royal site, some at Carillion’s Anfield project and two went on to careers working for Jaguar Land Rover.

As part of the Liverpool Community Fund, which was set up by Carillion as part of the deal for the new Royal, 80 local organisations have shared £100,000 over three years.

Carillion has also been working closely with HMP Kennet to provide ex-offenders with skills to help them find employment.

From the 2015 intake, three people applied for NVQ courses and one has since been promoted to a role as supervisor. From the 2016 programme 24 passed their Construction Skills Certification Scheme Health and Safety test.

Ian Stenton, head of sustainability at the Royal, said: “The new Royal communities programme has had a positive impact on local people throughout the course of the construction project.

“It has targeted people furthest from the labour market and has delivered training, skills and jobs. In addition, the Trust and Carillion continue to work to support local community organisations and leave a lasting legacy from the project.”

Simon Webb, project lead for Carillion on the new Royal, said: “Carillion wanted to ensure that they left a lasting legacy after the completion of the Royal and the Community programmes that we have been involved in with the Trust will ensure that this is the case.”

“Both projects have had significant impact and really supported vulnerable and isolated people to become fitter, healthier and re-integrated into wider healthy communities.

Clients have reconnected with friends, family and other support networks, which has helped their confidence, increased their selfesteem and helped to speed up the process of recovery.”

To mark three years of awarding funding, Carillion, the Trust and

Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services hosted a celebration event on Monday 5 September at University of Liverpool Guild of Students.

This is the final instalment of the funding which has supported local communities, with 33 groups being supported in 2015 and 19 groups being supported in 2014.

Liverpool Homeless Football Club received essential funding for a city centre office in 2014.

John Finnigan, CEO of Liverpool Homeless Football Club, said: “Liverpool Homeless Football Club aims to tackle homelessness across Merseyside through the power of football. Our city centre premises allows us to easily reach the city’s homeless population and to continue our successful track record of engaging and empowering homeless people.”

‘Digital excellence’ at the Royal We have been selected to become a ‘global exemplar’ in digital technology.

The announcement was made by health secretary Jeremy Hunt, who introduced the Royal as one of twelve “global exemplar” trusts in line for funding as part of investment into technology and infrastructure to enhance staff training and digital technology.

Each trust will receive up to £10 million, helping to make the NHS easier to use for the increasing numbers of people using smartphones and other mobile devices and those accessing public services online.

To support the innovation of digital services NHS staff will work with universities identified as ‘digital academies’ to help train staff to deliver high quality digital healthcare.

The funding will enhance existing NHS tools including the development of a new online triage system as part of NHS 111’s nonemergency phone line. It will also enable the creation of patient focused health applications for use on mobiles, tablets and wearable devices for patients to monitor and improve their health and lifestyle.

David Walliker, director of information technology, said: “This is fantastic news for our Trust. In our recent CQC report our innovative projects were highlighted as ‘outstanding’ as we have implemented a new whiteboard system throughout clinical areas to assist staff to manage and respond to patients more effectively.

“This accolade demonstrates our commitment to making our services better for patients. By responding to developments in technology and recognising that most people are using mobile technology to access health information means that we can be at the forefront of delivering this type of technology for our patients to improve services.”

Liverpool Life Sciences Accelerator tops out!

The £25million hi-tech laboratory facility being built on Daulby Street has reached its highest point of construction.

The milestone was celebrated by the NHS Trust, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and developer IHP with a topping out ceremony.

Those attending included the Deputy Mayor Cllr Ann O’Byrne and Colin Sinclair, executive director of the city’s Knowledge Quarter.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive of the Trust thanked the LSTM, the City Council and said: “The Accelerator will be a fantastic asset to the city and is part of a vision for the city with the Knowledge Quarter creating an international hub for life sciences. The Accelerator is also the first part of a Liverpool Health Campus that will be

built around it, bringing economic benefits and up to 5,000 jobs that will help improve the prosperity for the people of Liverpool.”

Professor Janet Hemingway, LSTM director, said: “There is already a great deal of excitement from industry about the Accelerator, which will see us strengthening our already close research ties with the Royal, encouraging further international links as well as with local SMEs. It’s an original offering which will put Liverpool very solidly on the map with its strong knowledge economy.”

Deputy Mayor Cllr Ann O’Byrne said: “The topping out ceremony recognises the skills and talent that are indigenous in the city of Liverpool. We are growing in our base for world class facilities and the Accelerator is one that will create jobs for local people, along with great opportunities for young people, graduates and apprentices.

Liverpool is leading the way in health and wellbeing and it is at the heart of what we do, from life sciences and children’s centres to activities to get people fit and healthy, this all contributes to making Liverpool a great city.”

Colin Sinclair, executive director of the city’s Knowledge Quarter, added: “The Knowledge Quarter is a mayoral development zone within the city stretching from the waterfront all the way up to Lime Street. It’s the biggest cluster of academic and clinical facilities in Liverpool and is also home to some of the most brilliant, innovative businesses working in science, life science and technology. Liverpool leads the world in fighting against infectious diseases and personalised medicine. This is proof Liverpool is a global city and we can compete with anyone, anywhere in the world.”

Move to Improve QEP pitchathon winners Sarah Dyson and Laura Jenions have been busy getting their idea under way.

The physiotherapists put their case forward for Move to Improve – a project which would improve the mobility of patients staying on our wards, helping them get home quicker.

QEP – or the quality, efficiency and productivity programme, looks at how we can reduce costs by improving quality.

As a result of winning the pitchathon, Laura and Sarah received a support plan to help them kick start their project.

1000 Voices projects get underway Work to improve patient flow across the Trust is under way after staff shared their ideas at the 1000 Voices event in June.

Ambulatory care, which is taking place in our AMU, is just one of the projects being used to ensure patients are treated in the most appropriate place.

The project involves treating a significant number of emergency adult patients that can be managed safely and appropriately on the same day without admission to hospital in a designated area of the AMU. Lynn Murphy, lead nurse in the AMU, said: “This is all about improving patient experience when they come to our hospitals. The project has helped to reduce unnecessary admissions by pro-actively looking for patients in the AMU that can be treated in Ambulatory Care.”

Priority projects With so much happening across our hospitals, the Trust needs to prioritise certain projects and ensure everything goes towards meeting our quality objectives.

Those projects are split into areas like our new hospital, workforce, research, development and innovation, strategy and planning, and service and improvement.

41 projects currently being prioritised look at things like bed migration, trials and commercial growth, bank agency spending, sustainability and transformation planning, and 1000 Voices.

One priority currently underway involves working with Temporary Staffing – formerly Staff Bank – to reduce the reliance on agency staff, while ensuring appropriate cover is available when needed.

Priority projects span right across the Trust. You can find a full list of these projects via the staff intranet.

Research shows that within 72 hours of physical inactivity, changes in skeletal muscle occur and the elderly can lose up to 5% of their muscle strength daily.

Older patients can be mobile for just 43 minutes per day in hospital compared to more than six hours at home.

Laura Jenions said: “We know immobility is an issue in hospitals. The QEP pitchathon is helping us to find out why our patients aren’t as mobile as they should be. By looking closely at this, we’ll be able to see if we need to address patient and staff education, staffing levels, equipment needs and what information is available to patients when they arrive at our hospitals.

“We also want to develop an online tool that will help nurses and other staff to assess when they can safely move a patient or when to call for a therapist.”

Alex McCrudden, QEP insight lead, said: “This project demonstrates how staff can contribute to the QEP programme by improving the quality of care for our patients.”

Developing a world class workforce

Educators celebrated at Education Awards Educators were recognised for their hard work in helping students on placements at this year’s Education Awards.

The Education Awards provide an opportunity for students and colleagues to recognise educators for going beyond their requirements and consistently working hard to ensure that the students receive the best possible learning experience.

This year four educators won awards after being nominated by their placement students.

Dawn Lacey was awarded the nursing educator award after being nominated by Martin McGillion.

Martin nominated Dawn for being kind, knowledgeable and for “having the patience of a saint”.

He said: “Dawn is a credit to our unit as she continuously moulds good nurses into great critical care nurses.”

Lynne Prosser picked up an award as the best therapies educator award by student Alex Morton.

When nominating Lynne, Alex said: “I wish every educator was as good as Lynne. She went out of her way to ensure I got the most out of this placement.”

The best educator in allied health was awarded to John Harman, who was nominated

by Anna Bracegirdle.

Anna said: “John goes above and beyond to make learning fun and interesting so that students look forward to placement.

“John always makes time to teach and listen to the students. He is easy to talk to and offers great advice and support at all times.”

Hannah Bell from cardiorespiratory won the best educator for healthcare scientists award after receiving two nominations – one from Jennifer McCorry and another from Helen Hawley.

Speaking about nominating Hannah, Jennifer said: “Jennifer is friendly, approachable and often goes above and beyond what is asked of her.”

Helen said: “Hannah worked tirelessly to help me achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Hannah was both friendly and welcoming towards me and made me feel like one of her colleagues.”

19 educators were nominated overall for an award and everybody nominated was recognised at the presentation ceremony.

Noeleen Ryan, practice education facilitator, said: “The awards provide us with an opportunity to recognise our educators for their hard work.

“Everybody nominated has been recognised by their students or their colleagues for consistently going above and beyond to ensure students achieve their goals.

“I would like to congratulate all those nominated for an award for their achievements.”

AGM 2016

Flu vaccination stations have been set up to make it easier for staff to get their jabs this year.

Staff and members of the public attended our AGM on 28 September to find out more about our achievements throughout the year and plans for the future.

All staff have the opportunity to receive free flu jabs to help protect themselves, their families and patients from the virus over the winter.

Bill Griffiths, chair, introduced the meeting before Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, spoke about the year’s highlights and challenges as well as giving an update on the new hospital.

Dates and locations are available via the staff intranet homepage and in our weekly news bulletin Intouch.

Our director of finance John Graham presented the Trust’s accounts for 2015/16.

It can take 10-14 days for the vaccine to provide optimum protection so it’s important to get vaccinated before you come into contact with anyone who has flu symptoms.

The Academic Palliative Care Unit and Quality, Efficiency and Productivity programme were also highlighted.

Eye-catching posters have been placed in staff areas to remind staff about getting their jab. Some of the phrases include “It turns out staff can catch flu too”, “Pssst! It’s flu season, don’t pass it on”, ‘I know what you did last winter”.

Staff can also contact the infection protection team to arrange for vaccinators to attend your department.

World class workforce

It’s time for a Heart 2 Heart

First in the UK living donor training Four years after being the first in Europe to perform a unique technique of living donor Nephrectomy, our transplant unit became the first in the UK to provide cadaver training for the procedure.

In 2012 the Royal carried out Europe’s first total retroperitoneoscopic living donor nephrectomy – a technique to remove the kidney for transplantation, which is cosmetically better and reduces the risk of injuries to other abdominal organs.

Since 2012, more than 120 nephrectomies have been performed.

Consultant transplant surgeon Sanjay Mehra led the course alongside Abdul Hammad, Ajay Sharma and Dan Ridgway.

Mr Mehra said: “The surgeons in the UK have shown interest in adopting this technique after we demonstrated its benefits in the live workshop in October 2014 conducted in the Royal which was well attended by the surgeons across Europe.

“With training being in such high demand, there are plans to run the course every year.”

Unsung heroes: Mortuary and Bereavement Services This month’s unsung hero spotlight highlights our mortuary team.

The team that look after loved ones when a relative passes away. From the mortuary technicians carrying out post-mortems to the Bereavement team who comfort and support families and friends when visiting their deceased relative.

The team consists of pathologists, mortuary technicians, assistants and the bereavement team. The team work closely with local agencies such as the police, coroner’s officers and funeral directors to help support families when a loved one dies.

The mortuary technicians provide assistance to a pathologist in conducting postmortems, which is vital to understand the causes of death or give closure to relatives as to why their loved ones have died.

Barbara Peters, mortuary and bereavement services manager, said: “Although I am relatively new to the team, I have already

Dr Murray told the people of Liverpool – the second worst city in the UK for death from heart disease – to live a healthier lifestyle by being more active, improving diets and stopping smoking.

The column, which warned Merseysiders that “if you combine poor lifestyle with a family history of heart-attacks, then your risk of suffering rockets”, was retweeted nearly 100 times and seen by more than 10,000 people on the Trust’s Twitter feed alone.

New service focuses on crucial dialysis stage First-time dialysis patients on Merseyside will be the first in the country to be given crucial one-to-one support in an innovative improvement project to help them through the difficult first stages of treatment.

supported by the Health Foundation, an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK. The project was selected following a highly competitive national selection process.

Our First Time Dialysis Project will provide patient-tailored education during the first six dialysis sessions to equip them with information to make decisions about their own treatment.

As a regional specialist dialysis unit, the Royal treats around 100 patients every day.

Dialysis is used for patients who suffer from chronic kidney disease and is normally carried out three times a week lasting for around four hours each time.

The first 90-days of dialysis are often the most critical, with patients’ bodies and minds adapting to new circumstances.

The First Time Dialysis Project, which will benefit the 150 patients who start dialysis at the Royal each year, is

Dave Reid, 58, from Kirkby, underwent dialysis after suffering kidney failure when he was 23.

“It has a huge impact upon quality of life and patients are often under-prepared to make decisions about their treatment options. With this project, we want to make dialysis as stressfree as possible for our patients and their loved ones.”

Dave said: “When I found out I had kidney failure, I didn’t know what that meant, what my kidneys did or how it would affect my life. It’s really important to have a nurse with the time to talk you through what is happening around you

“Dialysis doesn’t just affect you, it affects your family, too – they see what you’re going through hooking up to the dialysis machine so often; they live it with you. This service is incredibly important for them as well.”

Transplant patients trek up Snowdon to support organ donation Hundreds of transplant patients, relatives and organ and tissue transplant supporters climbed Wales’ largest mountain to raise awareness of organ donation.

Transplant recipients, donors, NHS staff and people waiting for transplants made the journey up Mount Snowdon to highlight the importance of organ donation and to encourage people to sign up to the organ donation register.

Any supporters who were unable to walk to the summit made the journey by train. Over 270 people meeting at the summit of the mountain in total, some travelling from as far away as Glasgow.

The walk is organised the Bangor Kidney Patients Association and started in 2007, with this year seeing more than double the usual amount of participants meet at the top of the 1,085meters (3,560 feet) mountain – the second highest in the UK.

270 transplant patients climbed Snowdon to raise awareness of organ donation regularly hikes the footpaths to the top, organising trips for other transplant patients throughout the year.

After his transplant transformed his life, Ken is determined to show others the wonders of organ donation and wants to encourage people to sign up to the register to give the gift of life to others.

Ken Jones, secretary of the Bangor Kidney Patients Association who helped organise the event, celebrated 20 years since his transplant this year, after receiving a kidney in the 1996 at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

In Wales, where Ken lives, organ donation on an opt-out basis was introduced in December 2015, meaning people over the age of 16 must register to object the donation of their organs rather than signing up to become a donor.

Ken, a retired civil servant, lives in the shadow of the Welsh mountain and

In the UK there are currently around 7,000 patients waiting for a transplant. The government in Scotland recently turned down a bill for an opt-out system, while the British Medical Association (BMA) proposed a ‘soft opt-out’ approach to the government this year.

Mr Ajay Sharma, renal transplant consultant at the Royal and the surgeon who performed Ken’s operation, joined Ken in organising the walk up the mountain.

He said: “For me there is no better sight than seeing transplant recipients ascending the highest mountain in England and Wales, some of them going faster than me!

“All the transplant patients, whether operated in Liverpool or other UK centres, inspire and drive all the medics and nurses to do better and better.”

Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday Staff from the Royal’s Roald Dahl Centre celebrated Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday with patients and their families this September.

The centre cares for patients with complex blood disorders by providing them with specialist care and a welcoming environment for them to feel safe and supported whilst receiving their treatment.

Specialist nurses were on hand to give members of the public the opportunity to find out about complex and rare blood disorders such as haemophilia, TTP, haemoglobinologies, thrombosis and the services provided by the Roald Dahl Centre.

Patients also met with the chief executive, Aidan Kehoe and chairman, Bill Griffiths to share

a specially themed Roald Dahl birthday cake created by local baker, Diane Singleton.

NHS Blood and Tissue services encouraged people to donate blood and The Book People sold their collection of Roald Dahl children’s book to patients and visitors.

Professor Cheng-Hock Toh, clinical lead for the centre said:

Consultant haematologist Dr Tina Dutt, who designed the Liverpool Preceptorship, said: “We hope that this exciting new education venture will equip teams with the specialist and human factor skills needed to manage patients with these rare complex life threatening conditions and optimise survival chances.

The Liverpool TTP team, led by Dr Tina Dutt and our Simulation team, led by Dr Annemarie Brown, teamed up to deliver ‘real-life’ experiences of managing patients presenting with acute TTP or aHUS, recreating nervewracking clinical practice.

Because TTP and aHUSs are so rare they can be misdiagnosed and failure to treat promptly can be devastating. Left untreated, patients are unlikely to survive

“It’s very challenging to manage these patients well, however we now know that in Liverpool we have a set-up that works for patients wherever they present in the North West. We want all patients outside London and the North-West to receive the care they deserve and the chance to survive.”

Among the best in the country The Stroke Unit at the Royal is one of the best in the country when it comes to saving lives, a national audit has found.

The National Stroke Audit (SSNAP), led by the Royal College of Physicians, found that stroke patients who are treated at the Royal have a better chance of survival compared to patients living in other areas of the UK. The stroke service audit looked at data from 175 acute trusts, with the Royal ranking as one of the best in the country when it comes to saving lives.

Our Trust was rated as the best in the north of England for low stroke mortality rates.

Some of the initiatives that have been put in place to achieve such low mortality rates include: •A consultant on the ward seven days a week •N ew technology has improved thrombolysis rates •C loser working between the emergency department and the stroke unit ensures speciality patients are given the care they need as efficiently as possible Paul Fitzsimmons added: “We recognise that what we do in the first hours and days after our patients have a stroke can make a huge difference to their rehabilitation and recovery.

“The recent figures from SSNAP show how we are doing the best we can to save more and more lives. They are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the stroke team and the progress we are making to improve the experience for our patients during their stay in hospital and when they return home.”

Lots to shout about for Town Crier Liverpool Town Crier, Terry Stubbings, wants to tell the people of Liverpool all about the care he received from staff on our Stroke Unit.

In August 2015, Terry experienced a stroke and was admitted to the Royal.

Now in recovery he wants to share his experience with others to highlight the dedicated work of those staff on the Stroke Unit, whom without he might not have survived.

Terry was rushed to the Royal in his 18th Century costume after welcoming a ship to the Liverpool Cruise Terminal.

Terry Stubbings remembered: “I drove to the ferry terminal with my wife, walked inside and felt dreadful; absolutely warn out. Two visitors were getting off the ship and asked

me for a photograph – I stood there totally confused and trying to work out what was going on.

“It’s great to see that our work has a positive impact on patient’s lives and Terry is a great example of this.”

“As Liverpool’s Town Crier, I’m recognised for my loud cries around the city and I want to tell the citizens of Liverpool about how fantastic the stroke unit is! The care I received from the team at the Royal was fantastic. Thanks to them, I am back on my feet and

enjoying life to the full with my family and friends.

“To have gone through having a stroke, being totally bewildered and come out completely better – I couldn’t ask for more.

“I’m absolutely certain that if I hadn’t come to this fantastic Stroke Unit, who knows what could have happened? It could have been an entirely different story.”

Consultant Paul Fitzsimmons said: “It’s great to see that our work has a positive impact on patient’s lives and Terry is a great example of this. Terry’s voice is a key part of his job, sometimes after a stroke patients can experience speech difficulties, but with our help, not only did he recover but he’s back on his feet and crying loud and clear.

Cancer Wellbeing Centre highlights complementary care at open day The Cancer Wellbeing Centre at the Royal held an open day in September to highlight the care they provide to patients and their loved ones on a daily basis.

Staff and volunteers from the centre hosted the open day to raise money and to provide people with the opportunity to learn more about the centre by offering massages and therapies for a small donation.

Opened in 2015, the Cancer Wellbeing Centre provides complementary therapies to patients and those closest to them during their treatment, including a range of massages and other relaxation treatments.

On the day, volunteer therapists offered complementary therapies including reflexology,

reiki, hand massages and aromatherapy to highlight just some of the therapies the centre provides to patients and their relatives.

71-year-old Pat Gornall, a patient at the Royal and regular visitor to the centre, came along on the day to show her support.

She said: “I was unsure before my first visit to the centre, but the staff were lovely and after speaking to them I decided to take part in a Reiki session, which was fantastic.

“The complementary therapies completely changed my outlook and set me on a new healing pathway.”

Supporters also kindly donated gifts to give away to help raise vital funds.

New menus help patients with specific dietary needs An enhanced menu to help patients with specific conditions and dietary needs to choose food that is right for them has launched at the Royal and Broadgreen.

The new menu, which is the first in the UK to group foods

depending on dietary needs, has been designed as a result of close collaboration from staff, ISS catering management and dieticians.

Changes to the menu will allow patients with dietary requirements to select their

meals in a much simpler and east-to-read way.

“There is a wide selection of dishes to suit dietary needs.”

Teams involved in the decision making for the new menu included the quality matron for nutrition, dieticians, hotel services and speech and language therapists (SALT), as well as representatives from the Patient’s Council.

New sections in the booklet include vegan, very low fat, allergy aware and upper GI menus to help patients make more informed choices when choosing their food.

The poor appetite menu now includes smaller meal options including meat and vegetarian finger food platters for patients who are unable to eat normal portion sizes.

The menu also has a handy guide to which meals are healthier options and meals that provides higher energy for patients needing extra calories in their diet.

Joyce Johnson, quality matron for nutrition, said: “The newly designed menu will provide patients with better guidance on what food they can eat while staying in hospital, depending on their dietary needs.

“There is a wide selection of dishes to suit dietary needs and we hope patients enjoy their meals while with us.”

Research completed on South Asian female cancer

Research which could reduce the number of female cancer deaths in South Asia by identifying why so many women avoid screening has been completed.

Breast cancer survival rates in South Asia are often higher than national rates in the UK and it’s thought that cultural factors surrounding screening such as not wanting to share intimate health problems could be the reason.

The research, which focused on Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian and Sri Lankan populations, was carried out by our Trust, the University of Liverpool, University Hospital South Manchester NHS Trust and University Central Lancashire.

“There has been no systematic collation of this body of research with the intention of developing recommendations for health promotion practice in a UK context. It is a very positive step forward.”

A personal insight into research by the Deb Roberts, clinical nurse specialist at the Trust who worked as a research nurse on the project, is available to read on the CLAHRC NWC website.

The project’s findings will now be collated and published in the near future.

Mysore Chandrashekar, consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon at the Royal, said: “It’s been a pleasure to be part of such a unique collaboration, providing clinical guidance on this important topic.

“We want the findings to contribute towards cancer screening policy in primary care communities and moving forward take the findings to as wide an audience as possible.”

Co-principal investigator on the project, Dr Pooja Saini, from the University of Liverpool, said: “This work will inform interventions directed toward early detection of female cancers in South Asian women from hard to reach communities. Such interventions could improve cancer mortality and morbidity

Research looked into breast cancer survival rates in South Asia

Prestigious award for Trust consultant Consultant haematologist Tina Dutt has won a Royal College of Physicians and Clinical Research Network research award.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions of NHS consultants and trainees who are active in research.

Tina won the award after outlining her contribution to the leadership of several NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio studies with a particular focus on engaging with patients to

inform them of new opportunities to participate in clinical research.

Winners will attend the Harveian Oration - one of the oldest and most significant events in the Royal College of Physicians’ calendar.

Tina said: “I feel really humbled to have won one of these awards. I feel that providing opportunities for patients to take part in clinical research is part of your duty of care. We all know that good clinical research drives the best clinical care.

“I’m particularly excited about attending the Harveian Oration. It’s the oldest and most prestigious event in the Royal College calendar, dating back to 1656; to represent our Trust there is something I feel really proud of.”

Professor Nick Lemoine, Medical Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network, said: “The competition was really intense for this year’s RCP prize winners. It is fantastic to see such commitment to research from both consultants and trainees across the country, leading clinical studies to improve outcomes for patients in the NHS.”

R Charity takes over Liverpool R Charity took over the busy streets of Liverpool to showcase plans for the new hospital and to raise awareness of their £10million Appeal.

Shoppers in Williamson Square were given an exclusive glimpse of what is happening behind the new Royal’s walls with a video that followed construction

workers through the hospital floor-by-floor.

R Charity volunteers collected donations and there was even a ‘royal’ appearance from R Charity’s mascot Roy, who posed for photographs with members of the public.

A live performance from Liverpool choir Sing Me Merseyside, which featured a guitar solo on their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, was followed by a flash mob performed by MD Productions.

New Royal developers Carillion presented R Charity with a cheque for £56,000 after raising money throughout the year.

The face of R Charity’s Pink Parties, comedienne Pauline Daniels, came along to encourage people to raise money for the new Breast Unit by hosting their own pink-themed party.

“It was so wonderful to see so many come together to promote R Charity and our new hospital.”

The £10million appeal will help to make the new hospital one of the best hospital environments in the country.

Aimee Clare, senior fundraising officer for R Charity, said: “It was so wonderful to see so many come together to promote R Charity and our new hospital. R Charity is working really hard to raise £10million to invest into new life saving

equipment, services and comforting environments for our new hospital, its patients and their families.

October marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in the lead up to the month R Charity has joined forces with comedienne Pauline Daniels to help raise awareness and funds for the new Royal’s Breast Unit.

The Pink Party campaign calls for the people of Liverpool to visit www.pinkparty.org.uk to register and host their very own Pink Party, in support of the breast unit appeal.

The funds raised will enable the Royal to buy three new mammography units, including two with the latest tomosynthesis technology.

The equipment will be able to help diagnose breast cancers at earlier, more curable stages, whilst reassuring most patients and improving the outcomes for women facing breast cancer.

Pauline Daniels joined the Pink Party campaign after celebrating three years in remission.

Pauline Daniels said: “I’m backing the Royal’s Pink Party campaign to send a message to women - and men - highlighting the importance of checking their breasts and knowing the things to look out for. I challenge you to hold a Pink Party to raise funds for the brand new 3D mammography machines that will be vital in saving and improving more lives in the future.

“When I was a girl, a woman with breast cancer would lose her breast, her life, or both. Today we can make a real difference.

So come on girls and boys; it can affect us all, let’s make the experience better for cancer patients now and cancer patients to come.”
