Stephen Graves Welcome to the Summer edition of The Pulse magazine.

In this edition of the Pulse magazine we have some great stories about our staff going to extraordinary lengths to help others. I am always so proud to hear how, despite fulfilling demanding roles, many of our staff members are still able to make time to do their bit for charity, or to volunteer their skills to support people who are less fortunate. On page 6 there is a round-up of some great charity events our staff are taking part in, and on page 9 we have shared a wonderful story about a group of our surgical consultants, and our theatre manager, who spent a week working in Uganda for free to help doctors there develop their orthopaedic and endoscopic services. The team also performed life changing surgeries on children with limb deformities and patients with severe burns.

Equally as inspiring is the story of our cardiac physiologist Laura Conway who saved the life of a runner while competing in a local half marathon.

Laura gave the runner CPR at the roadside until paramedics took over.

Thankfully the gentleman survived and has since met up with Laura. Turn to page 9 to find out more.

These stories are a great example of the fabulous people who work in our hospitals. Great work happens across all departments every day despite the fact our hospitals are busier than ever. We recognise our staff who go the extra mile every year in our Outstanding Achievement Awards – so if you have a story about a staff member whose care or service has gone above and beyond, we want to hear from you. This means many eye clinic patients can receive care much closer to home. In addition, we have appointed a contractor to carry out electrical improvement works on the hospital site in June, and will be applying for planning permission to house a permanent MRI scanner at the hospital in the future.

At the time of going to press, our Board of Directors is due to meet on 24 May 2016 to decide the next steps in a plan which scopes the benefits of working more closely with colleagues at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. This includes looking at how some services could be shared and examining the prospect of working as one organisation in the future. We will be providing an update as soon as we are able to, but you can also hear more at our Annual Public Meeting being held at Peterborough City Hospital on 28 July.

Children who currently attend the rheumatology clinic in Rainforest Outpatients now receive additional support from a team of physiotherapists to help them manage their pain.

The physiotherapists have been providing support for the Rainforest Outpatients department for four months, but they also have one physiotherapist who provides support specifically for the children who attend the rheumatology clinic.

This additional support means children can have their clinic appointment with a consultant and then receive physio during the same visit and in the same location.

This change to the service has made a difference to our young patients, in particular Jacob Yates (15) and Caitlin O’Callaghan (11) who are regular attendees at the clinic.

Jacob’s mum Rebecca said: “The support we have had from the team in Rainforest has helped Jacob progress in leaps and bounds. Once we had the inflammation in his joints under control with his medicine, we were able to start physio and it has done him the world of good.

“Jacob is a keen sailor and cyclist and has been able to really enjoy these sports again, so we are

pleased with how well he is now progressing.”

Caitlin’s mum Kate added: “The continuity of care Caitlin receives is outstanding and we feel the care team really listen to us. Caitlin has been coming here for treatment since she was just two years old. Rainforest manager Erica Crust looked after us then and is still looking after us now. The physiotherapy service has been excellent over the years and the appointments are really convenient for us, too.

Patient Experience – Thaila Skye Avid Blogger Thaila Skye was admitted to Peterborough City Hospital after experiencing pain in her lower abdomen.

Thaila has Crohn’s disease and often blogs about her experience with the condition- you can check it out here: “I have to say, Peterborough City Hospital is a really nice modern building – it almost feels like a shopping centre than a hospital.

It’s clean, has fantastic facilities and the staff are really nice. And the meal choices when you’re a patient? Jeez, I’ve seen posh restaurant have less meal choices than this place! You get a full menu to choose from and the food is actually really nice.

“Visiting hours are good and having a single room certainly makes a difference; it not only helps with getting a good night’s sleep but being the introvert that I am, I need my own space.

“The only ‘bad’ thing that I experienced during my stay was that if you needed assistance from the nurse (e.g. pain relief) during their shift handover, you were left waiting quite a while.

This was because the nurses are all busy during this time getting all the patient updates from the nurses on the previous shift. It’s understandable, but frustrating.

It means that as a patient you are forced to plan ahead for the times when you ask for pain relief; if you ask for it half an hour before their handover, you should be fine.

We are pleased to tell you that Thaila is well and was discharged after a couple of days.

“Caitlin leads a fully active life and loves to dance.

She has attended ballet classes since the age of three, and is now learning contemporary, street and ballroom dancing.”

No time to stand still in the NHS! Hospitals are busy places – but have you ever wondered exactly how busy they are?

At the end of every financial year, we take stock of the past 12 months’ activity to help us better understand the need for the acute health services we provide at Peterborough City and Stamford Hospitals. As the communities across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire grow, so does the need for hospital services, so it makes sense to ensure we can meet the demand for care.

2015/16 was our busiest year yet – the figures on the right show the number of patients treated across a variety of services. Of particular note is the increase in both emergency department attendances and outpatient appointments when compared with the previous year. In addition, the number of babies born has now surpassed the 5,000-milestone.

Celebration of graduation achievements Over 40 members of staff celebrated completion of their additional qualifications studied for this year.

The first of two graduation ceremonies was held in April and the next is planned for September.

Health Care Assistants were presented with their Care Certificate award by Jo Bennis, Chief Nurse.

Others were honoured with qualifications ranging from NVQs in business administration, customer services, clinical healthcare

support, pathology support and perioperative support.

Stephen Graves, Chief Executive, said: “Achieving additional qualifications, alongside working hours, is not an easy undertaking and demonstrates how dedicated our staff are to developing the skills necessary to fulfil their roles to the highest standard.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to see colleagues rewarded for all the extra effort they commit to, to enhance their skills and knowledge at work.”

NVQ Awards

Orthopaedic surgeon wins prestigious prize Mr Andy McKee, Hand Surgeon, has been presented with the Murray Matthewson Prize for the best Orthopaedic Trainer in the East of England.

This is the most prestigious and coveted award for Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in the region.

Craig Reston, Clinical Director, said: “We are thrilled that Andy has received this award. To achieve this accolade for the second year is a tremendous accomplishment for the Peterborough Orthopaedic Department.”

Andy said “Receiving the Murray Matthewson Prize was a great honour.

I have always tried to emulate the people who trained me when teaching and supervising doctors in training.”

Peterborough nurse reaches final of British Journal of Nursing Awards A nurse at Peterborough City Hospital has been recognised for her outstanding dedication to patients who suffer with continence issues.

Lorraine Spindler, a specialist continence nurse in the Trust’s Patient Safety Team, was one of three finalists nominated for the 2016 British Journal of Nursing Continence and Urology Nurse of the Year Award.

Lorraine attended an awards ceremony at London’s Shakespeare Globe on 11 March, accompanied by a cohort of colleagues who celebrated her achievement with her.

Annette Parker, Assistant Director of Nursing, said: “Since taking over the speciality in 2015, Lorraine’s work has had a direct effect on reducing the number

of catheter-associated urinary tract infections at our hospitals in Peterborough and Stamford.

Her role involves making sure every patient who has to be catheterised, has a ‘catheter removal plan’.

Considering we have more than 600 patients in our hospitals at any one time, that is no mean feat.”

The accolade places Lorraine as one of the top continence nursing specialists in the UK. Lorraine said: “It’s wonderful to be recognised for the role I play in ensuring our patients remain comfortable and infection-free while they are in hospital and for helping people in the community deal with incontinence. It’s really important to be able to listen to a patient’s concerns and uplifting to find out that a solution I have suggested has been life changing.”

FUNDRAISING

Critical Crazies take on Moonwalk Challenge In May, a group of 20 nurses from the Critical Care Unit, together with their friends, successfully completed the London Moonwalk.

The annual event raises money to support both research into breast cancer and people who are affected by this illness. The team strapped on their walking boots at midnight and walked the 26 mile route until dawn.

Janine Jarman, Critical Care Educator, said: “We decided to take on this collective challenge following the loss of our colleague and friend Gemma Burland earlier this year.

“We are proud to support the vital work that is needed to help those affected by the condition now and in the future.”

TOUGH MUDDER Staff from the Emergency Department at Peterborough City Hospital got their hands dirty in an unusual team-building exercise earlier this summer.

A team of 25 nurses, healthcare assistants, and porters took part in Tough Mudder Midlands on Saturday 14 May, to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Staff braved an 8km course of challenging obstacles at Belvoir Castle in Grantham. They climbed mountains of mud, waded through giant pools of water, crawled through dark tunnels and much more.

Moira braves the Shave – Macmillan Fundraising Day Patients, visitors and staff are invited to attend a Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraising event in the main atrium at Peterborough City Hospital on 10 June between 12 and 2pm.

The event will include a cake sale, tombola and one brave staff member, Moira Johnston, who will be having her hair cut to support the children’s cancer charity, The Little Princess Trust – and then having her head shaved to support Macmillan through donations and sponsorship on the day.

the event together with the Trust’s staff council. She said: “It is sad that most people will be affected by cancer in some way during their lifetime. In addition to raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, I also wanted to support The Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.”

A few members of the team attempted to complete the course without so much of a speck of dirt on them, but it is safe to say they failed and got well and truly muddy.

The team completed the obstacle course while donning customised t-shirts with the caption: ‘this is how the ED does teambuilding.’

Johnathan said: “We would like to say a big thank you to local business, Chromasport and Trophies in Bretton for sponsoring our t-shirts. It made a few of our fellow runners chuckle and helped break the ice while we were waiting to complete some of the obstacles.”

The team managed to raise over £500.

New developments

Respiratory appointments

Breath of fresh air for respiratory patients Patients with breathing difficulties can now be referred direct to Peterborough City Hospital for respiratory investigations by their GP. Tracy Herod, the Trust’s Primary Care Lead Respiratory Physiologist, said: “Previously these services were only available once a patient had been referred to a respiratory consultant or clinic. Now GPs can book appointments for their patients directly through our NHS e-Referral service.

“We currently have four appointment slots available each week. Ideally we are looking to see patients who have possible Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), an unexplained persistent cough, patients who have had an abnormal X-ray result, or whose initial breathing tests at their GP

surgery were inconclusive.

“In the Respiratory Investigations Department we have the expertise and equipment available to carry out intensive testing to determine a patient’s full pulmonary function. We’re looking forward to helping as many patients as possible.”

If you have any concerns about your breathing, speak to your GP in the first instance, and, if they aren’t already aware, let them know that they can book an appointment at our Respiratory Investigations Department direct, using the ‘Choose and Book’ system.

GPs first need to complete a referral form which is available on the Trust’s GP Extranet to ensure the right tests are carried out for Asthma, COPD, or Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Demand for Pillcam sees service expand In the last edition of Pulse magazine, we announced the launch of our new Pillcam service, which enables patients to avoid invasive bowel investigations by swallowing a capsule which contains a tiny camera. The Pillcam procedure is now proving so popular, we have expanded the service.

Veronica Dolan, Operational Project Manager for our Endoscopy Unit, said: “Initially we offered the Pillcam service once a week, however due to an increase in referrals, we’ve added on three extra sessions a month. Having the extra capacity means patients won’t have to wait as long for appointments and diagnosis.

In addition, Jan Wills, the endoscopy nurse who performs the Pillcam procedure, is undergoing training that will enable her to report on findings.

The Pillcam capsule takes between two and six pictures every few seconds as it passes through the 20 feet of a patient’s small bowel. The images are stored onto a data recording pack which the patient carries with them. The images are then transferred onto video for our Endoscopy specialists to review.

News from Stamford Hospital Staff Nurse attends Royal Garden Party In May, one honoured Staff Nurse from Stamford Hospital celebrated the centenary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) by attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. The event was hosted by the Queen as a way of recognising outstanding public service.

Kay Bannister has been a nurse for over 30 years and an RCN representative for the last three years. During her career, she has worked in many hospitals around the UK and covered many specialities such as orthopaedic, adult medicine, adolescent oncology and now in the Greenwood surgery unit.

Kay said: “I was absolutely thrilled to attend the Royal Garden Party on behalf of the RCN. I love being a nurse and knowing that every action of care you give makes a difference to your patients’ lives is so rewarding.”

New state-of-the-art optical scanner unveiled at Stamford Hospital Patients at Stamford Hospital will now benefit from a new state-of-the-art optical scanner which is available for those suffering from a range of eye conditions.

The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner examines the retina and optic disc by using light waves to take cross-section pictures of the retina at the back of the eye.

The scanner is an essential requirement for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with medical retina, vitreo-retinal and glaucomarelated eye conditions.

100 year celebration for Stamford Hospital nurses This year members of staff from Stamford Hospital are celebrating the centenary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), by holding an afternoon tea on Wednesday 20 July.

Sue Brooks, Matron, said: “We look forward to hosting this special event. As part of the 100 year milestone of the RCN, we will be exploring how nursing

has changed over the years and I’m hoping to hear stories from our former nurses and their fond memories of Stamford Hospital.

“Items from the hospital museum will be displayed for guests to see our collections and archived photographs. If you would like an invitation to the event, please contact Stamford Hospital and leave your contact details.”

Hospital to receive their scan. Now this new equipment will enable around 50 patients to be scanned at Stamford Hospital each week.

That’s appoximately 2,500 scans per year.

The numbers will rise over time as the service is developed.

Mr Sumit Dhingra, Clinical Lead and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, said: “This is a fantastic investment for the department and will mean that many of our patients, who may have difficulty travelling, will be able to receive services closer to home. Our staff in Stamford will be able to provide a service with the very best technology and we will also be able to then build on this service in the future.”

The extra mile

Staff help develop services in Uganda Consultants, Jonathan Jones, Robert Dennis, Mark Latimer and Theatre Manager, Mark Robertshaw recently ventured to Southern Uganda where they worked with staff from Kisiizi hospital to perform lifechanging surgeries.

The team spent a week working with staff to develop their orthopaedic trauma, paediatric orthopaedic and endoscopic services, as well as performing life changing surgeries on children with limb deformities, patients with severe burns and trauma patients.

Orthopaedic Consultant, Mr Jones volunteered his services at Kisiizi Hospital last year and decided to return with fellow colleagues after seeing the struggles they face on a daily basis.

Mr Jones said: “The staff at the hospital are very passionate about what they do and have good practices in place, but they need support in developing their services. We offered them teaching and training to help broaden their skill set and to enable them to expand their services. Theatre Manager Mark provided inservice training to theatre nurses to improve processes and minimise surgical complications and infection. At the request of the Lead Surgeon Mr Gabriel Okumu, Colorectal Surgeon, Robert

coordinated and delivered a Primary Trauma course, which included a series of lectures and practical sessions.

“The experience was both rewarding and challenging. The team and I had to adapt our practices to suit their environment, which really opened our eyes to how fortunate we are to have access to the most up-to-date equipment and training. We have forged some great links with the hospital and are hoping to continue supporting them in the future.”

In addition to providing support and training, the team also delivered some hospital equipment that the Trust had donated, as it was no longer used.

Congratulations to our Marathon runners Congratulations to two members of staff who ran the London Marathon earlier this year. At Peterborough City Hospital, Steve JoyGood, Transformation Lead, completed his fifth marathon in 3 hours and 45 minutes and raised £1,200 for Children with Cancer.

At Stamford Hospital, Staff Nurse Morag Roberts, who is 72, ran the marathon in 6 hours and 2 minutes and has raised approximately £3,000 for the Red Cross. This is the first time Morag has taken part in the London Marathon, but she has also completed several other challenges, including the Mount Everest Trek and the Larkya La Pass.

Hospital staff arrive in Uganda

Heartfelt reunion for CPR cardiac duo who saved runner’s life Two Senior Cardiac Physiologists have been reunited with a runner, after saving his life during the St Neots half Marathon.

John Rowlands from Harpenden in Hertfordshire collapsed during the half Marathon in November last year. Fortunately for him, Laura Conway, a Senior Cardiac Physiologist at Peterborough City Hospital and Sam Cullen, a Cardiac Physiologist at Papworth Hospital were also running in the event and stopped when they saw him collapsed at the side of the road.

Laura said: “Because of our training we realised immediately that he’d stopped breathing. We began CPR straight away, taking it in turns to perform chest compressions until he started breathing again.”

John was then taken by ambulance to Bedford Hospital where it was

discovered that he had been living with an undiagnosed asymptomatic congenital heart defect.

John said: “I can’t believe how lucky I was to have had two heart specialists running in the same event when I collapsed. Thanks to Laura and Sam’s fast action and CPR skills, it was confirmed by Papworth Hospital that no damage had been caused to my heart while I was unconscious.”

Almost six months to the day since John collapsed, the trio ran together in the Peterborough parkrun, which took place at Ferry Meadows on Saturday, 16 April.

Laura said: “What happened to John could happen to anyone, but there isn’t always going to be two cardiac specialists on hand to deliver CPR. That is why it is so important for everyone to learn how to do it.”

Join our patient experience group We are looking for people to join our patient experience group and help shape our hospitals’ services.

Members of the group will be able to share their experiences and contribute to the development of high quality, safe services that meet the needs of the local population.

The group will meet every other month for approximately two hours and the work of the group will be shared directly with the Trust Board.

All applicants will be invited to attend an information event where they will be offered an opportunity to find out more about what the group will do and to ask any questions.

Are you on the organ donation register?

Would you take an organ if you needed one? Nearly everyone would but only 29% of people have joined the organ donor register.

Peterborough City Hospitals Organ Donation Committee has been trying to raise awareness in the local community. Senior Specialist Nurses have visited local schools to provide pupils with information about what it means to be an organ donor and how to register.

Trust launches new staff health and wellbeing initiative The Trust has implemented a new staff health and wellbeing initiative to encourage staff to become more active.

We have signed up to take part in the Global Corporate Challenge, a 100-day virtual journey around the world where teams of seven compete against each other and teams worldwide to see who can walk the furthest.

Ian Crich, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “We have spent a considerable amount of time speaking to staff about how we can help them improve their health and wellbeing.

The Trust is sponsoring 43 teams to take part in the Global Corporate Challenge, which encourages them to be more active and to aim for at least 10,000 steps each per day, which

isn’t as easy as you may think. The initiative not only looks at fitness, but also offers staff advice on nutrition and how to achieve a positive mind-set.”

Team members have been given a pedometer, which records the number of steps they do each day. This data is then transferred to their online portal and their position on the world map will move depending on how far they have walked.

Ian Crich, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “The response from staff has been fantastic and everyone is feeling enthusiastic about the challenge.

Good luck to all the teams taking part.”

Professional Pride

Trust celebrates International Day of the Midwife The Trust’s maternity department joined midwives across the world as they celebrated International Day of the Midwife on Thursday 5 May. Staff rallied in the main atrium at Peterborough City Hospital to showcase the role they play in bringing new life into the world, from antenatal care through to labour and delivery and postnatal care.

The celebration gave patients and visitors the opportunity to see a birth pool and other birthing aids used during labour and delivery.

They were also able to speak to midwifery staff and ask any questions they had about pregnancy, the career path of a midwife and much more.

The maternity department has had a fantastic year and our midwives helped to deliver over 5,000 babies in the Trust’s delivery suite, midwife-led birthing unit and in the comfort of women’s homes.

Pharmacy staff get a new look

Fran Gregory, Head of Midwifery, said: “We strive to provide a safe, proactive, quality service, where mothers have a say in how and where their babies are born. We have been working hard to improve our services to enable women and their partners to have the best birthing experience possible.”

In addition to interactive displays, staff also used the event as an opportunity to raise money for Mission Hospital, Zimbabwe. In total staff raised over £200 through generous donations and a cake sale.

New pharmacy uniform

Technicians and support staff from our Pharmacy department can now be seen sporting their new uniform.

The new-look uniform is bottle green with white piping and the pharmacy white cross with ‘Team Pharmacy’ on the logo.

Claire McIntyre, Chief Pharmacist, said: “The uniform came about after consulting with staff within the department through our staff council, to establish a team identity.

We also found that prior to introducing the uniform, many staff, patients and visitors found it difficult to identify pharmacy team members on the ward.

We are hoping this change will make them more visible, easy to identify and support our team ethos.”

Staff celebrate Nurses Day Nurses across both hospitals celebrated Nurses Day on 12 May. Nurses from the Practice Development Team at Peterborough City Hospital held a cake sale to raise funds for the Staff Council to support staff events. Each ward received a thank you certificate from the Executive Team to show their appreciation for the role they play in providing quality patient care.

Staff from Stamford Hospital raised money for the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children charity. They held a nearly-new sale from items donated by colleagues and members of the public.

Sue Brooks, Matron at Stamford Hospital, said: “We chose to support this charity as it is the 30th anniversary this year of the Chernobyl incident and it is important to remember that the event has had a terrible lasting effect for generations – even for those children born after it.

“We are fortunate in this country that we all have relatively easy and free access to nurses, doctors and medical care and we can sometimes take this for granted. We thought it would be good to remember and help these children from Chernobyl who do not have the same privileges that we enjoy here.”

Final words

Caring for Carers Teresa Jude has been appointed to the new role of Carers’ Advisor at the Trust.

Her role is to offer initial support to unpaid carers and signpost them to the support services in the community.

She works closely with Carers First (for Lincolnshire Carers) and Carers Trust (for Cambridgeshire Carers).

Teresa said: “Partners, relatives and friends often do not identify themselves as carers and as a result they may not receive the support they need. We know that caring for someone can be physically and emotionally draining, and recognise that carers need to care for themselves as well as their loved ones and seek support when needed.”

The Trust supports carers by offering: • extended visiting hours • concessionary parking • a designated bed to stay overnight The Trust is signed up to John’s Campaign, a campaign for extended visiting times for family carers of patients with Dementia. This recognises the valuable help carers can provide for patients, particularly keeping patients with Dementia calm and feeling secure.

Guide dogs are special guests at Members’ meeting The Trust holds members’ meetings over the course of the year, each focusing on a different specialty. Our first event of the year was held at Peterborough City Hospital in the Ophthalmology Department.

Attendees took part in a guided tour provided by the Ophthalmology’s clinical team through the department, showcasing the state of the art equipment which facilitates over 2,500 clinics a year and the dedicated ophthalmic theatre.

Jeanne Howard, Assistant General Manager in Ophthalmology, said “The open event was a big success and I was proud of the team’s hard work to show the members and visitors what the department has achieved and all it can provide for our local area.”

Staff from the Eye Clinic

The clinical team were on hand to share their knowledge and answer questions about eye problems. The event was also supported by the Royal National Institute of the Blind, Vision Aid and Healthwatch Peterborough.

There were special guests at the event, local guide dogs; Kirby a Golden Retriever and Nancy, a black Labrador. They arrived with their owners together with the Guide Dogs for the Blind team.
