Actor’s call for all to sign donor register As a Brummie, a British Pakistani and a Muslim I cannot think of anything better to do than join the register.

Birmingham-born actor Adil Ray, famous for his starring role in hit comedy TV series Citizen Khan, has teamed up with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to front our campaign to boost the number of people on the organ donor register. A passionate supporter of organ donation, Adil sent this message for National Transplant Week which runs each July: “As a Brummie, a British Pakistani and a Muslim I cannot think of anything better to do than join the register. “Did you know that there are more British Pakistani Muslims on waiting lists for organ or stem cell transplants than there are registered donors? Imagine being one of them?

“Just stop and think about that. Knowing that someone out there could save your life. This happens across the United Kingdom but in cities like Birmingham, with a large British Pakistani Muslim community, the problem of this mismatch is clear and leads to longer waiting times for life-saving treatment. “We all must embrace organ, stem cell and blood donation and encourage such virtuous behaviour – there cannot be any transplants or transfusions without willing donors.

“As British Pakistanis we are brought up to treat everyone as one of our own. But what about where it really matters? Imagine saving a life. What could be more dutiful than that? Come on, join me. The feeling’s great!” Adil’s support comes at a time where there are over 5,000 people nationally waiting for a kidney alone and over a fifth of that figure is from an Asian background – whilst those from an Asian background make up less than ten per cent of the donor register. At the same time hundreds of potential donor organs are not used every year due to the families of the dying or deceased not knowing of their loved ones’ wishes. For more details about becoming a donor see page 5.

Team’s nomination for prestigious award A team from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS FT has been short-listed for this year’s prestigious Nursing Times Awards. The entry, titled ‘24/7 Research for 24/7 Trauma: Recruitment of more patients to research trials to improve trauma and critical care patient outcomes’ is a finalist in the Clinical Research Nursing category. The purpose of the initiative was to create 24/7, 365 day access to trauma patients with the aim of increasing the number of patients recruited to research trials. It is led by the Trust’s trauma research nurse team which is the first and only UK team to work 24/7, 365 days a year. It is also the only UK team to enrol injured military and civilian personnel into clinical trials on one site, under the leadership of the Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC). It is hoped that larger numbers of patients taking part in trials will help improve trauma and critical patient outcomes at a local, national and international level. NIHR SRMRC Research Programme Manager Dr Karen Piper explained: “The 24/7 service was launched in 2012 and within the two years we have seen a marked improvement in accruals to clinical research studies, with over 500 to date. “This can be explained by 60 per cent of our trauma patients being recruited to clinical trials out of hours. “By promoting the success of our 24/7 research infrastructure we hope to encourage other hospitals to adopt a similar approach thereby maximising the outcome for patients recruited and for all traumatically injured and critically ill patients in the future.” The 2014 Nursing Times Awards has had a record-breaking year for entries and the judges say they have been extremely impressed with the high standard. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 29 October at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Nominations are now closed Thank you for your nominations. Look for the shortlist which will be published in the October issue
