Support for people affected by cancer When you’re affected by cancer, having the right kind of information and support at the right time is essential.

P

eople living with and beyond cancer in Doncaster and Bassetlaw can now access a full range of resources and services that support their needs from the point of diagnosis onwards.

The Living Well Information and Support Service in Doncaster offers a single point of contact to the numerous services available to local people affected by cancer. Living Well, which began in April 2014, has supported over 800 people in accessing support.

Service can support you and your family with welfare and benefits advice, access to social groups, emotional support, information about living with cancer and much more.

People affected by cancer in Bassetlaw can access the Macmillan Cancer Support Hub, based at the Aurora Wellbeing Centre in Worksop. The centre provides information, along with access to over 20 programmes of support. People affected by cancer are supported to self-manage the emotional, physical and financial effects of a cancer diagnosis, including combating social isolation.

The Living Well Information and Support Service and the Aurora Wellbeing Centre are part of the Macmillan Survivorship Partnership across South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire. The partnership is working to ensure that people living with and beyond cancer are leading as healthy and active lives as possible.

Winning training formula skin slows pressure ulcers Pioneering scanner trial O

ur nurses who specialise in preventing skin damage have come up with a winning formula that has contributed to a 30% drop in severe pressure ulcers at the Trust.

Headed up by Tracy Vernon, Lead Nurse for Tissue Viability, the team of three tissue viability sisters have taken nurse training out of the classroom and placed it firmly at the heart of the ward – the patient bedside.

The team came up with a fresh approach to the way they train nurses by using a new bespoke training package called the Ward Based Training Programme.

Tracy said: “We had to devise something completely different to reduce the number of severe pressure ulcers in the Trust.

Being a small team we needed to share our expert knowledge about skin damage prevention out into the wards. The idea of having a pool of fully trained tissue viability practitioners on each ward who could teach other nurses and provide 24/7 seamless care was the best solution.

“We enlisted the help of ward managers to identify nurses who were most passionate

about preventing harm to their patients caused by pressure ulcers. These nurses were put through an intensive six month training programme and had to achieve a 90% pass rate for 12 practical assessments and a full day working one-to-one with a tissue viability sister in their ward.

“The advantage of taking the training to the bedside was about making it real, you just cannot do that with eLearning packages.

Giving each nurse the opportunity to work closely with a tissue viability expert helped to further embed their knowledge and skills. The investment in time and effort of my team is now showing fantastic results.”

This innovative nurse training programme is part of the Trust’s three year pressure ulcer reduction strategy. Other measures include the purchase of 114 special pressure relieving beds, plus an extensive bed replacement programme for all patients, and an innovative skin scanner trial.

Richard Parker, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality, said: “Protecting patients from harm is a top priority for us and the excellent work that our tissue viability team are doing contributes greatly towards this.”

We piloted an innovative mobile skin scanning device in March to reduce the number of avoidable pressure ulcers in our hospitals Called the SEM Scanner™ the American product uses non-invasive biosensor technology to measure SEM (sub-epidermal moisture) to spot the early warning signs of pressure-induced skin damage 3-10 days before any damage is visible to the naked eye.

New sexual health service launched

We are working together with Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) to deliver a new integrated service, launched on 1 April 2015, which will improve the sexual health of Doncaster adults.

The new service, paid for by Doncaster Public Health, is called TriHealth and will

provide a high quality sexual health and contraceptive service.

The service is open 6 days a week and until further notice, you’ll still be able to visit the service you use now in exactly the same way - at the same location. TriHealth also provides a nurse-led outreach service for residents not wanting to access mainstream health care.

Lynn Goy, Lead Nurse in Genitourinary Medicine at DBH, said: “As organisations that have worked closely for many years, this new opportunity to strengthen that partnership will deliver high quality sexual health services, specifically designed to meet the needs of the Doncaster population we serve.”

e are currently making a lot of exciting investments to develop our services to patients across all

our sites.

During this time we ask patients, visitors and staff to please bear with us while we work so we can build a brighter future for better care in Doncaster & Bassetlaw.

Our exciting plans to transform facilities at Bassetlaw Hospital have moved a step closer as a funding agreement with the Department of Health to the value of £3.8 million has now been signed.

Plans are to relocate and modernise a number of key services including diabetes outpatients, training and education, mortuary, medical records, linen stores and estates that will significantly improve the hospital environment for staff and patients alike.

The images show the new purpose-built accommodation at Basstetlaw Hospital that will be built with state-of-the-art energy efficient and environmentally friendly features.

Subject to planning approval we hope to start work in the summer on the 12 month building scheme.

Other exciting developments include…

• The newly extended Clinical Decisions Unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary opened in February. This facility has significantly improved the privacy, dignity and overall environment for patients attending the Emergency Department who require a period of observation or further mobility assessments and diagnostic tests. For more information see the Emergency Department feature on page 7.

• Diabetes & Endocrine was relocated to ward 4 as part of a larger project to provide a new extended Ophthalmology Outpatients Department at DRI. The new Diabetes & Endocrine facility opened to patients in Autumn 2014 and provides better, more modern facilities to improve the service we can offer to our patients.

• The Acute Medical Unit at DRI has been refurbished and opened in November 2014. The new facility has en-suites to multi bed bays with glazed automatic doors and screens. It has improved the privacy and dignity for our patients as well as upgrading all the mechanical and electrical services to the ward.

Clinical Decision Unit

• Our very busy Ophthalmology Outpatients Department is part of an exciting expansion that will see it double in size, to provide a better service and environment for our patients and staff at DRI. The work is due to be completed in Autumn 2015. As part of this expansion process the Phlebotomy Department (blood tests) has been relocated into Outpatients 1 and Diabetes & Endocrine relocated to ward 4.

• We’ll be working to improve the drop off and parking area at the Emergency Department at DRI. The work will help to enhance the privacy and dignity of our patients brought to the department by ambulance. The developments will also make it easier and safer for people entering the department on foot.

• Upgrade works to create a brighter and more welcoming entrance to the

Women’s & Children’s Hospital at DRI have recently been completed. The improvements include a new ceiling, flooring and lighting.

• In April we will begin work at Montagu on the refurbishment of the second of two rehabilitation wards which will improve layouts, update facilities and services to create a better patient environment and enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

Local woman sheds pounds thanks to Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster

A

local woman is sharing her success story to encourage others to shed the pounds.

Doncaster nurse fronts national campaign One of our nurses is spear heading a national nursing and midwifery development campaign.

Mariano Ponte, Ward Manager at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, is the lead in the NHS Leadership Academy’s Frontline nursing and midwifery programme, after having his inspirational blog published on the Academy’s official website.

Mariano was recommended for the leadership programme by his line manager. Once on the course he was quickly spotted by the Academy as a rising talent and they decided to use him to promote their national programme to 5,000 nurses and midwives across the UK.

Anne Marie Maxfield lost an incredible 4 stone, 8 pounds in just 3 months, thanks to Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster (HLD).

Anne, aged 40 from Askern, joined HLD in September weighing 17 stone 6 pounds. Before attending the Doncaster based NHS weight management service, Anne felt she was alone and did not know how to change herself.

She explained that she had been very unhappy with herself, her weight and appearance which led her to contact the HLD service.

Now weighing a much healthier 12 stone, 13 pounds Anne claims to feel like a new person, feeling fitter and happier with a clearer mindset. Simple tasks such as running up the stairs are now proving much easier.

Talking about the sessions, Anne said: “I loved learning about the things I was doing wrong, in particular about sugars, fats and using food labelling.”

When asked what she would say to encourage others to access the service, Anne simply said: “Go for it!”

HLD is a specialist weight management service for children, adults and families.

A referral criteria of a BMI over 35kg/m2 for adults and over the 98th percentile for children is required.

The service provides one to one support and group sessions for 12 months which include information and skills development, to enable a healthy diet, and activity sessions to aid weight loss.

Appointments are available in venues across Doncaster. Education groups are available at Doncaster Dome and Dearne Valley Leisure Centre.

The HLD team is made up of registered dietitians, lifestyle advisors, an exercise specialist, a cognitive behavioural therapist, a physiotherapist and fitness instructors.

Mariano said: “I never expected to be heading up the Academy’s campaign and it is a great honour.

As a result of the programme, I am more confident in dealing with staff and in making sure that they deliver the quality of care that we expect. I’m more likely to challenge bad practice and want to achieve even more for my patients.

“I have led and presented a patient case at a meeting where senior managers have been present and recently a clinical educator has commended me on how well I manage meetings. I was used to public speaking before but my confidence in this respect has grown.”

The Frontline nursing and midwifery programme is for all nurses and midwives working in organisations providing NHS funded care.

New emergency Clinical Decision Unit Our Emergency Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary opened its newly extended Clinical Decision Unit, to patients on 11 February 2015, following a major redevelopment that has transformed the previous four-bedded unit into an outstanding 15-bedded facility.

T

he Clinical Decision Unit plays a critical role in reducing the pressures on the Trust’s Emergency team by providing a more appropriate setting for adult patients who are not suitable for discharge, but who also do not need to be admitted to an inpatient ward.

As the observation unit for the Emergency Department the Clinical Decision Unit gives patients who need assessments, diagnostic tests and treatment a safe and comfortable

facility where they can be cared for away from the main emergency department.

Dr Asim Habib, Consultant Lead for the Clinical Decision Unit, said: “We are very pleased to have this new unit which will allow us to care for patients, with specific but common medical and social issues, who might previously have spent many hours in the main emergency department in much improved surroundings.

“Some patients attending the Emergency

Department require a period of observation, for example after a minor head injury or we may need to carry out mobility assessments and diagnostic tests to reach a sound clinical decision. All these things take time and the Clinical Decision Unit provides an appropriate environment for these patients until their assessments are completed or safe discharge is decided.”

The unit is specifically designed with bright, contemporary surroundings and comprises of 15 beds within five single sex bays. The unit has the added advantage of adapting the number of beds from 15 to 12 and four chairs to meet the demands of the Emergency Department. Each bedded bay has en-suite facilities, phone and computer access. There is a kitchen and a main seating area with a flat screen TV provides added comfort for long stay patients. Staff can access and input timely and live data from within the bedded areas to ensure increased patient safety.

Emergency Department pressures Like many hospitals across the country we experienced high demand for emergency care over the winter period.

Our staff were the unsung heroes and their sheer determination to give patients the highest standards of care was exceptional.

Demands on emergency services were significant during the early part of the year which meant that some people waited longer to be seen, as our emergency staff concentrated on the seriously ill patients.

Despite experiencing our busiest period ever we delivered the best performance across

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

We would like to thank you all for your support to help ease the pressure on our Emergency Departments by choosing wisely and seeking advice from general practitioners and pharmacies.

The NHS Friends & Family Test Trust introduces text feedback

W

e want to know what you think of our services – would you recommend us to family & friends?

We are making it simpler and more convenient for patients who use our Emergency Departments to give feedback by introducing a text messaging system.

A text is sent to all patients who agree to take part within 48 hours after they are discharged from the Emergency Department asking if they would recommend the service to their friends and family as part of the national feedback scheme. The text message is anonymous and if

Whether you receive a text message or a card asking you the friends and family question, please complete it. It gives us invaluable information on what you think of our services to help us continually improve.

the pilot proves to be a success it may be rolled out to other departments within the Trust.

Mike Pinkerton, Chief Executive, said: “We want our patients to have the best possible experience of care in all our hospitals.

The Friends and Family Test supports the fundamental principle that people who use NHS services should have the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience. This gives the Trust invaluable information on what patients think of our services, which can be used to help make improvements if required and to share good practice where relevant. I urge all our patients to complete the Friends and Family Test before discharge, or if you have visited A&E use the new text messaging option available - this is your chance to have your say.”

Introduced in 2013, the national NHS Friends & Family Test (FFT) is used in hospitals across the country and asks patients who have been an inpatient, who have accessed emergency departments or have used maternity services: “How likely are you to recommend our service to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?” Patients are asked to respond to the question by choosing

one of six options, ranging from ‘extremely likely’ to ‘extremely unlikely’.

Since the FFT was rolled out across the Trust in 2013 over 31,000 pieces of feedback have been received through postcards and on the website with 87.39% recommending the hospitals and 2.28% unlikely to recommend.

Reading well books on prescription for dementia At the beginning of February the Doncaster community came together to mark the local launch of the Reading Well Books on Prescription for dementia.

together representatives from this Trust, Doncaster Libraries, Public Health, Doncaster CCG, and other health organisations, to raise awareness of dementia and how books influence the health and wellbeing of local communities.

ENT Masterclass

ince its launch over 10 years ago the ENT Masterclass® has gone from strength to strength, securing its position as a leading force in the ENT global academic arena, and firmly placing the Trust as a centre of excellence in the international marketplace.

Mr Shahed Quraishi, Consultant ENT Surgeon and Director of ENT Masterclass at the Trust, has taken the masterclass training platform at DRI to all over Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and South Asia. Now for the first time, the ENT Masterclass® academic travelling club has led a learning expedition to India to further establish links with ENT surgeons who work across the country. The nine member faculty arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi on 6 December.

The academic programme started with the rhinology session, with excellent talks on sinonasal, functional and aesthetic nasal surgery.

The day ended with a lively ‘round table’ on the place for open surgery in rhinology.

Day two started with an early morning clinical ward round at the ENT ward at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with standing room only. Prof Thakar, local host and organiser of the training event, Prof Sharma, Chairman, AIIMS and their colleagues presented cases from maxillary malignancies to skull base glomus tumours with surgical outcomes, which could only come from masters. In the main lecture hall Prof Santosh Kacker, the father of Indian otology chaired the session with state-of-the-art lectures from Prof Kaschke, Prof Ray, Ms Neumann, Dr Victor and Dr Sikka.

Mixing business with pleasure, the ENT Masterclass® travelled to Taj Mahal.

Mumbai was the setting for the last leg of the academic programme. The ENT Masterclass® was not without its own history, it was being conducted simultaneously across the length and breadth of India at hotels in 18 cities connecting 1,200 ENT surgeons, in all two million square miles by video link. Prof Kirtane gave an eye-opening update on the excellent work being done by the Indian Cochlear implant programme.

Mr Quraishi shared his experience on day case Parathyroid surgery at DRI, which is one of the leading centres for it in UK. State of the art lectures followed one another ranging from pituitary tumours,

craniofacial surgery to evaluation and management of voice disorders.

The eight day academic travelling club came to an end at 7.00pm on 14 December with 40 state-of-the-art lectures and four lively panel discussions.

Objectives were achieved beyond the dreams of those present and the air echoing for a date for the next visit.

Feedback for the Masterclass was phenomenal from all over India and also from many others across the globe. This event has now established Doncaster’s ENT Masterclass® as a cherished training platform across three continents and via the Webcast to over 80 countries.

National recognition of Cancer team A team of specialists who provide urgent care for people with cancer received a national award from the Quality in Care (QiC) Oncology programme.

The Trust’s acute oncology team were presented with the commended award for ‘Cancer team of the year’ at a prestigious ceremony in London that celebrated the best in cancer care, in December.

2013 to March 2014 and was funded by Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, was so successful it has now been made permanent, with both clinical commissioning groups in Doncaster and Bassetlaw funding the service. During the scheme nearly half the patients seen by the acute oncology team were seen in the new working hours.

The award was for providing an extended out of hours service, meaning that cancer patients who became unwell or developed a new problem had greater access to specialist cancer input into their care every day of the week.

The scheme also included care for people on anti-cancer treatment.

Lesley Barnett, Head of Nursing and Quality for the Specialty Services Care Group, said: “Receiving this recognition is a great tribute to partnership working between the hospitals and Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group allowing the acute oncology team to improve the patient experience for people with cancer and make sure that they are fully supported when they need urgent care.”

A

Retford man who attended an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening clinic at Retford Golf Club is backing the screening programme after it detected his symptomless, but potentially life threatening condition.

Moore at the golf club in January and performed a simple ultrasound scan, which picked up a small AAA. Fortunately, the team detected David’s aneurysm in its early stages and he has now been entered into the 12 monthly surveillance programme to keep an eye on the condition. Speaking about his visit to the screening clinic, David said: “I’m so glad

I visited the nurse the following week, she explained everything and put me at ease; and I can go for my 12 month surveillance appointments at Retford Hospital so it’s not far to go at all.“

Teaming up with The Millers Rotherham United Community Sports Trust has joined forces with South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw’s AAA Screening Programme and hosted a new pilot health screening clinic at the Millers’ New York Stadium in a bid to protect its older male fans from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm’s.

The screening team promoted their AAA programme with Millers’ fans at the Rotherham United v Millwall match on 28 February. The team handed out leaflets and self-referral packs and generated a lot interest from fans, Rotherham’s Mayor Cllr Foden and Miller Bear.

What are AAAs? An AAA is when the aorta, the main blood vessel in the body weakens and expands.

This condition, if untreated can lead to a rupture of the aorta which creates a serious risk of death due to internal bleeding. Around 3,000 people die every year from ruptured AAAs. Men in their 65th year are automatically invited by post to attend a screening clinic but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the AAA Screening programme on 01709 321189 or by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa@nhs.net.

AAA team top of the tree for self-referrals In a report released last November, the AAA Screening team were shown to have screened more self-referred men aged over 65 than anywhere else in the UK. Overall in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw 2,220 men over 65s were screened, with the total for the entire North of England at 5,559 self-referrals. As well as accounting for well over a third of the figures for the entire region, the team also came out on top for the whole of the UK.

New clinical non-executive

appointment A

deputy director of medical education who has a background in public health and worked as a GP has been appointed as nonexecutive director on the Board of Directors.

This appointment demonstrates our commitment to respond fully to the Francis Report recommendation that all healthcare providers should recruit at least one nonexecutive director with a clinical background.

Martin McAreavey, 45, who lives in Pocklington, started his general medical training in Scotland aged 18 and then moved to Yorkshire to continue his medical career in public health medicine. Since qualifying as a consultant in public health medicine in 2005, he has taken on senior roles in health care and health care education.

Martin is currently Deputy Director of Leeds Institute of Medicine Education, and Associate Professor at the University of Leeds.

He holds an honorary consultant contract in public health medicine with Public Health England and a master of business administration degree from the Leeds University Business School.

Martin’s new role as a non-

executive director at this Trust will see him providing a clinical perspective when challenging the Trust’s strategy and future plans, ensuring it meets its responsibilities and duties and holding the executive directors to account.

Welcoming the appointment, Trust Chairman Chris Scholey said: “I am delighted that Martin McAreavey has joined the Board of Directors.

Having a non-executive with a clinical background solidifies our commitment to being a patient focussed organisation. Martin’s experience and skills will bring a valuable contribution to championing excellence in clinical safety and quality.”

Speaking of his appointment, Martin said: “I am looking forward to applying my experience and clinical knowledge I have gained during my career to both benefit and support the Trust in delivering safe and effective care to its patients.”

Martin has been appointed to the role of non-executive director with us for a period of three years. He will be expected to make a positive contribution to the Trust, working around five days per month and participating fully in the work of the Board.

The remuneration for the role is £12,000 a year.

Nurse Recruitment – Return to Practice We’ve started a new initiative to attract more nurses to come and join our team.

A

s reported in the news recently, there is a national shortage of nurses in the NHS, and many trusts are considering recruiting nurses from overseas, while other trusts, like us, are looking at more imaginative ways to recruit nurses.

We are working in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University and Hull University to support and encourage local nurses into practice after lapsed registration.

We have already seen a lot of success and have recruited three Return to Practice nurses. One paediatric nurse and two general nurses started their university training in February and their placements at DRI at the end of March.

Two Return to Practice nurses that have just started the Sheffield Hallam University course are Karen Daines and Susan Morris.

Karen left nursing in 2008 to raise a family but returned to the Trust as a discharge co-ordinator in our Emergency Department.

She was very keen to return to nursing because she missed having direct patient care.

Susan left nursing in 2007 to live in Portugal and has recently returned to the UK and wanted to return back into the profession.

Richard Parker, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality, said: “Relaunching return to practice programmes is part of the national programme which has identified over 1000 nurses who want to return to the workforce. I am delighted that we are now able to offer this opportunity locally and shortly before Christmas we interviewed and offered four placements to return to practice nurses, three general nurses and one paediatric nurse. They will spend five days at Sheffield Hallam University and 25 days in placement at DRI, with the aim of them starting posts as registered nurses in August.”

Dr Alasdair Strachan, Director of Education, said: “As a Trust, committed to high quality training, we are keen to support staff who want to return to the workforce. Through an excellent working relationship with Sheffield Hallam we can ensure staff are upskilled, comfortable and confident to not only return to nursing but continue to develop and progress for the rest of their professional life.”

The next intake is in September and we will be interviewing in the spring.

Karen Lanaghan, End of Life coordinator

End of Life Care We recognise the importance of consistent and good quality end of life care through privacy, dignity, and symptom control for patients at the end of their lives.

Karen Lanaghan was appointed as our End of Life Care Coordinator in September 2011 and since then she has worked tirelessly to form a service to improve the patient’s journey in their last days of life.

“Death and dying is often a ‘taboo’ subject, not only amongst health care professionals but society itself.” Karen said.

She has worked hard to dispel the fears and break the negative barriers associated with the Liverpool Care Pathway which were very evident in the media. Supported by Richard Parker, Director of Nursing, Midwifery & Quality, she set about personalising the patient’s end of life journey based around the leadership alliance key recommendations and learning from the Liverpool Care Pathway experiences.

She has created a plan of care covering the last few days and hours of life which replaces the Liverpool Care Pathway and encompasses the five priorities of caring of the dying: • Recognise • Communicate • Involve • Support • Plan & Do An electronic system has been set up which alerts Karen and the chaplaincy department by mobile and email when a patient is near the end of their life. Karen can then promptly attend wards, giving end of life advice and support to patients, relatives and ward staff.

At a weekend the specialist palliative care and acute oncology nurses respond to the alerts.

dele Mumby, Partner Governor for Bassetlaw District Council, resigned from her seat on the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors thanked her for her contribution, and wished her well in her new role at the Trust.

The next governor elections will take place this summer, with one Bassetlaw Public Governor and two Doncaster Public Governor seats up for election.

2015 Governor Meetings We apologise for the cancellation of the Board of Governors meeting on 29 January. The snowy weather made the road conditions challenging.

In circumstances like this we always try to give as much notice as possible – please check social media and our website.

You don’t need any special skills or qualifications. The most important requirements are enthusiasm and the willingness to put forward both your own views and the views of the people in your constituency. You also need to have the time to attend the Annual Members’ meeting and four Board of Governors meetings a year.

We’ll provide training and there’s always someone on hand to offer advice and support. Governors serve for a period of three years and are eligible to stand for re-election at the end of that period.

Chairman to stay on for an extra year

In September’s edition of Foundations for Health we announced Trust Chairman Chris Scholey was planning to stand down at the end of 2015. We are happy to report that Chris is now staying on for an extra year and his term will finish at the end of 2016.

Grant for cancer group A prostate cancer support group has successfully bid for a grant from Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group consists of prostate cancer patients (past and present), plus their supporters and it has clinical backing.

Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face, and the feeling of loneliness and

isolation that so many people experience makes it even harder.

The group`s aim is to help its members by listening and supporting them with talks by consultants, Macmillan, and very importantly, peer support from others in experiencing the same. It aims to channel the experience of its members

to inform local people of the positive impact of our achievements, and then work on behalf of cancer patients to improve service.

The group plans to meet every two months.

News from the Governors

Who’s the Governor We caught up with Public Governor John Humphrey to find out more about him – here’s what we’ve discovered:

What makes you tick, hobbies, interests?

My great passion was singing Barbershop for 22 years in various choruses both in the UK and the USA. We won several gold and silver medals and represented the UK in the US annual convention several times whilst with both Sheffield and Nottingham clubs.

Although I didn’t realise it at the time, we were trained by some of the world’s top coaches from various vocal styles. I retired from Barbershop a few years ago and still miss it.

Why did you become a governor?

The main reason was to give something back having spent a fair amount of time in hospital

as a patient myself since 2006 in the CCU. I do enjoy meeting people and the role helps keep the old gray matter alive. I also like to know how my taxes are being spent.

Was the governor role what you expected?

Yes and no. Governors are encouraged to adopt a ward as part of the Productive Ward program. I took on CCU and the ATC at Bassetlaw Hospital. I find it very enjoyable talking to patients and I understand how they feel, being once in their position myself.

I didn’t realise the volume of reading required.

This is my second term as a Governor and I was pleased to be re-elected. During the first three years I felt I was learning about the NHS and now that I’m in my second term I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Governor Summary Our governors have been involved in a range of work over the last few months.

The Health and Care of Adults subcommittee looked at adult safeguarding, while the Health and Care of Young People sub-committee discussed education and training, safeguarding and estates issues. The staff governors were also out and about promoting their role among staff members.

Governors have participated in ‘Quality Assurance Tool’ visits to wards.

At its quarterly meeting in February, the Board of Governors appointed a new Non-executive Director (see page 12), approved a new Trust Constitution and reappointed both the Trust Chairman and David Crowe, Non-executive Director.

Governors also discussed methods of holding non-executive directors to account, and the challenges the Trust has faced in relation to winter pressures on the emergency department.

Governor timeouts were held in December 2014 and March 2015. They covered staff appraisals and training, claims, end of life care (see page 13), business planning, mortality, site development plans, and the new Care Quality Commission’s inspection framework. Governors also received a presentation from Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group.

History Matters

A Cup of Tea, Matron?

I

t is battered , cracked and stained, the handle is broken, and it looks as if it has been found on a refuse tip, which it probably was.

This small tea cup has recently been added to the Trust Archive; the motif printed on it shows that it must have been manufactured especially for Montagu Cottage Hospital, Mexborough.

Though made of a rather coarse pottery, it is doubtful that patients would have drunk from it. It is more likely to have been used at meetings of the Board of Governors and other committees. Located on an auction web site, it may be the only survivor of its kind. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who knows of the existence of another of these cups, or of a matching saucer (if, indeed, such an item ever existed).

Our second picture, that of a young nurse, was found on the same auction web site. The only clue to its subject’s identity is a tiny embossed stamp in the lower right-hand corner: ‘Medcalf, Mexboro’.

While leafing through a short history of the hospital published in 1925, I came across a portrait of the hospital’s first Matron, Miss Annie Elizabeth Moore (see smaller portrait). Though in this picture she is clearly older, I am fairly sure that it is the same person. Miss Moore, a local woman possessing “high nursing qualifications” was appointed Matron when the hospital was founded in 1889. She left to marry one of the honorary medical staff, Dr. Sidney O. Hatherley, in 1898.

The Hatherleys maintained strong links with Montagu Hospital for the rest of their lives. In 1910 Dr. Hatherley Miss Moore became Medical Officer of Health for the Mexborough suburb of Swinton, and continued his work as a member of the

Both he and his wife served as members of various hospital committees; Mrs Hatherley was also President of Swinton Child Welfare Centre. Three of their four daughters followed careers in medicine. Their second child, Edith, was for many years Montagu Hospital’s visiting consultant ophthalmologist.

It’s fascinating to think that the good doctor and his wife, who are so important a part of Montagu Hospital’s history, might have drunk from our little cup.

There is a sad postscript to this story. In September 1933, when on a motoring holiday on the continent, Mrs. Hatherley and three of her daughters were involved in a serious road accident. Edith, the driver, was gravely injured, her two sisters less so. Their 66-year-old mother, however, died as a result of her injuries a few days later. She was buried at Dôle, France. Dr. Sidney Hatherley, who had remained in England, died aged of 87 in May 1958.
