from history, designed to encourage patients to socialise and reminisce. It also includes a personalised digital My Own Life story of each patient, jointly created by hospital staff and family members who can interact with it on-screen.

The life story helps staff to get to know their patients and includes the patient’s work history, achievements and remarkable things from their past, as well as their likes and dislikes on food, music, entertainment and activities. The information is used as an aid by ward staff to provide an easy and quick reflection of the patient.

Tour de Mexborough During the Tour de France, patients and staff at Montagu Hospital’s Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre hit the gym to cycle the 200km distance of the York to Sheffield leg for their very own ‘Tour de Mexborough’.

aunched on 4 July, the Tour de Mexborough was a slightly more leisurely event than its famous counterpart, and continued over the weekend and into the following week until they reached their 200km target on Friday 11 July.

First to head off on the Tour were patients Harold Hartley from Conisbrough and Mark Priestley from Thurnscoe, under the watchful eyes of Physiotherapist Stephen Hampson and

Occupational Therapist Joanne Jutrzenka.

Stephen Hampson, Physiotherapist at the Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre, said: “We wanted to integrate the spirit of the Tour de France into our patient exercise activities.

It’s generated a lot of excitement among our patients who have really embraced it. Each patient takes turns to use the cycling machines, which help to strengthen their arms and legs, and in doing so the patient contributes to our Tour de Mexborough event.”

Bev Shiner beat more than 100 entrants to the prize with her entry of; ‘I’m organ-ised, are you?’

As well as winning the iPad mini, Bev will now have her slogan used in a forthcoming Organ Donation campaign across Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

A Doncaster woman has won an iPad mini for winning our competition to encourage more people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register.

Jane Tute, Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation, said: “In Doncaster and Bassetlaw, as with the rest of the UK, the number of people on the Organ Donor Register isn’t as high as it should be. Only 31% of the population are on the register, yet almost all of us would take an organ if we needed one, so the figures clearly aren’t in balance.

Look back on 2013/14

This was the first full year of our strategic direction, ‘Looking Forward to our Future’ and its vision, mission, values and strategic themes have guided our actions throughout. The key thread running through our approach has been to put quality and safety first and let that drive all our plans and deliver the efficiency we need to sustain our services in the face of growing demand and reduced resources.

eflecting on 2013/14, we can note many significant developments and achievements including national awards for nursing, midwifery, medical, training and care pathway developments.

The Assessment and Treatment Centre at Bassetlaw Hospital was recognised by the NHS Medical Director as an example of best practice and we won the best Dementia Friendly Hospital award.

We successfully bid for and delivered, through the Department of Health, a range of maternity improvements at both Bassetlaw and Doncaster along with the new frailty assessment ward, ‘Stirling Ward’ Doncaster.

We opened the Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation at Montagu, a Day Surgery Unit at Doncaster and the Assessment and Treatment Centre (ATC) at Bassetlaw.

We had an unannounced CQC inspection which found us fully compliant with all inspected care standards on all sites.

During the course of the year, we’ve reduced our waiting lists and achieved the Emergency Department four hour wait standard, which was very important for our

Many of our services now run on a seven day basis. The Board has focused on staffing levels throughout the year by increasing recruitment and reducing reliance on agency staff.

Harm free care has been another priority and serious falls and Clostridium Difficile rates have greatly reduced. However, pressure ulcers remains at a high level necessitating a strategy which we expect will result in improvements in 2014/15.

Our formal complaints have reduced and response times have improved. Timely resolution and learning is key to our new policy approach which was introduced in March 2014.

Our progress as a centre for Research and Development was marked with a new strategy and national recognition for the progress made.

As all of the progress we have made this year has been based upon the commitment and work of our staff, it was pleasing that the majority of indicators within the staff survey showed continuous improvement.

Look back on 2013/14

Being green and sustainable Delivering world-class health services over several hospital sites has an unavoidable impact on the environment. We aim to be environmentally friendly, and our commitment to sustainability remains a high priority.

• Energy: we consistently strive to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing our electricity, water, gas and oil usage. Our Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit generates around 50% of our electricity needs at DRI. The waste exhaust gas is used in the production of stream, used in sterilisation processes and heating the hospital. Our CHP scheme is subject to an annual scrutiny by the Environment Agency, which administers the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme. Our reported data confirms that our unit retains its efficiency and this has helped maintain our position within the top 24% nationally in performance league tables produced by the department.

• Waste: we strive to reduce as much waste as possible and recycle the waste that we cannot avoid. We continue to collect and compact our general waste and have this recycled through a specialist company. Waste deemed unsuitable for recycling is used as fuel for commercial manufacturing processes.

• Water: Water boreholes at our three main hospital sites have saved over £100,000 a year since installation.

• Site developments: Our on-site Capital Development Team gives consideration to green and sustainable initiatives for inclusion in refurbishment projects using renewable technologies for lighting, heating and ventilation.

Day Surgery Unit officially opened W e officially opened our Day Surgery Unit and Theater Admissions Unit on the 27 June. The £1.8m development also includes a refurbished Children’s Surgical Unit.

The unit was officially opened by Dr Mark Skues, Immediate Past President of the British Association of Day Surgery, who said: “I am delighted to be here and to see the day case facilities that Doncaster has to offer.

Day surgery is an essential service, providing a flexible approach for both patients and surgeons, freeing up valuable bed space on the inpatients wards.

“It also has to be a quality service and this is demonstrated very well by the Trust coming out top in its Friends and Family Test with a satisfaction score of 92.6 per cent from the

people who have used the unit. An excellent result for an excellent service.”

Technological advances have made it possible for complex surgery to be carried out without the need for an overnight stay. These facilities allow us to perform procedures using lasers and keyhole surgical techniques, whereby patients recover more quickly.

Longer opening times (7.30am - 7.30pm) allow us to perform procedures on 28 adults and 30 children a day allowing for recovery time.

The design focuses on the patient’s journey through the unit, from check-in and pre-op assessment at the Theatre Admissions Unit, to their short stay in the Day Surgery Unit.

There is a comfortable discharge lounge for patients waiting to go home.

Easing the pressure on skin sores Protecting patients from pressure ulcers is a top priority for us and we recently purchased 114 ulcer relieving mattresses.

The Karomed Transair mattresses are being used by all patients in our Emergency Departments and assessment areas, to reduce the likelihood of skin sores. The mattresses detect pressure points and protect skin from friction with air-filled cushions, which gently inflate and deflate.

Tracy Vernon, our Lead Nurse for Tissue Viability, said: “We have taken big steps

towards our goal of driving down the number of pressure ulcers in our hospitals.

That’s why we automatically provide these mattresses to all patients who attend our Emergency Departments and assessment areas. Our view is that we assess these patients as being at very high risk of developing a pressure ulcer even though they may be fine. It’s far better to prevent a skin ulcer from occurring than treat one once it has developed.”

Pressure ulcers occur very quickly, potentially in just one or two hours. Older people, those with limited movement and those with a

poor diet or health condition like type 1 or type 2 diabetes, are most at risk.

You can minimise your risk by keeping skin clean, dry and moisturised, changing your position regularly, eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding dragging your heels or elbows when moving around in an armchair, wheelchair or bed.

A Stirling Ward for older patients The brand new Stirling Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary opened its doors to patients in April 2014.

I

t’s our newest ward and has been specifically designed to meet the needs of older patients who are frail and severely unwell.

The ward assesses and provides timely and holistic care to patients to help them live better with frailty and continue their lives.

Patients admitted to the Stirling Ward will have first come to the Trust’s Emergency Department and been identified as requiring specialist assessment due to their frailty. They will stay on the ward for 48 hours, receiving a thorough assessment, by a team of skilled professionals, who will assess physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs of the patient.

Patients will then be transferred for their continuing care into a community setting, back into their own homes, or for further hospital treatment or rehabilitation, if required. The aim of this new service, combined with a frailty assessment team, is to get patients to the right place for the right care, by the most appropriate team.

A unique feature of the Stirling Ward, and one which is probably a first in the country for an acute hospital ward, is its living room complete with fireplace, comfy sofas and ‘mock’ window with mood lighting that changes colours creating a relaxed and calm atmosphere.

The dementia-friendly environment is evident throughout the ward with its clean and clutter-

free environment, mood lighting and wall mounted TVs in each bedroom. From the clocks that also show the date as well as the time, the signs on the doors, the colourful pictures, and the frosted glass panels with painted flowers create an environment to help patients feel at home and less disoriented.

Dr Rod Kersh, Consultant Physician in Medicine for Older People, said: “Long periods in hospital can be harmful for older frail patients where they feel that they should stay in bed and become dependent and as a result start to deteriorate with the possibility of not being able to return home. The Stirling Ward encourages its patients to socialise and interact with other patients in its dining room and living room. Patients can talk with others who attend for outpatient clinics which helps them understand and realise that they can get back to independent living.”

Mother and baby care presented with top UNICEF Award Our Maternity Services are the proud recipients of the highest level of Baby Friendly accreditation awarded by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

his prestigious award was presented to the Trust’s staff, in April by UNICEF’s UK Deputy Programme Director for the Baby Friendly Initiative, Anne Woods. During the visit to Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Maternity Unit Anne chatted with Trust staff and met new mum Victoria Bennett and baby Pollyanna.

Anne said “It has been a real privilege to come and present this award, especially because the Maternity Services in Bassetlaw and Doncaster had received such an outstanding assessment.

It was remarkable how much the mothers had commented on the kindness of staff and the warm friendly feeling they had in the units.”

“At UNICEF we use the Baby Friendly Initiative to recognise the highest standards

of early year’s care which is vitally important to the health and wellbeing of both the mother and baby. Doncaster and Bassetlaw mothers can be assured of the best possible support and advice in feeding and caring for their babies and to strengthen the motherbaby bond.”

The award follows months of rigorous testing and an external visit by UNICEF’s team of assessors to the Trust in December 2013.

Both of the Trusts units were assessed against a range of criteria relating to antenatal care, keeping mothers and babies together, breastfeeding, and providing practical information and support to mothers in their chosen feeding method. The findings showed that both Maternity Units scored significantly higher than the 80% standard required.

Dementia Friendly Technology Charter The Alzheimer’s Society has produced the Dementia Friendly Technology Charter.

The Charter aims to improve the access and use of technology for individuals, commissioners and providers, so that every person with dementia has the opportunity to benefit from technology that is appropriate to their needs. The Charter

is about focusing on technology to help people with dementia to live independently for longer and reduce stress that the condition has on the person and their carers. Bowel Cancer Screening:

the single most important thing you could do this year

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK. One of the reasons why is because the symptoms go unnoticed until the disease is well developed. Hence the importance of screening to find signs of a problem even before the symptoms start to appear.

he South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw bowel cancer screening programme is for men and women aged between 60-74 who are registered with a GP in Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Worksop or Retford.

The kit does not show cancer; instead it looks for invisible traces of blood in your bowel motion indicating that you will need further tests.

If your test is normal you will be offered screening again in two years’ time.

A colonoscopy is a thin, flexible tube with a camera which is passed through your back passage and looks at the lining of your bowel. Out of 10 people with abnormal screening results who go on to have a colonoscopy, half will be normal; with the other four having polyps, (growths which if untreated may develop into cancer), and one person having cancer.

The screening kit comes with full instructions so you can complete the test in the privacy of your own home. Once complete the kit is posted in the special prepaid envelope to the

What to look out for?

If you notice any of these symptoms and they last longer than four to six weeks, tell your doctor: • Bleeding from the bottom without any obvious reason.

• Persistent change in bowel habit to looser or more frequent bowel motions.

• Stomach pain, especially severe.

• A lump in your stomach.

War declared

100 years ago

Men flocked to join the colours and within a month almost 1,500 had passed through the Doncaster High Street Recruiting Office.

I

n the week that war was declared, one enterprising local dental surgeon sought business by declaring in the Doncaster newspapers that “Thousands of would be recruits to our army and navy in this alarming crisis have been absolutely refused by the medical officers on the grounds that they are unfit for service owing to diseased mouths … we are bound to conclude that diseased teeth are a very grave menace to the health of the British public and to the welfare of our Great Empire!”

Even if this were true, as the war dragged on and casualties mounted, it is doubtful that poor dentition was a bar to enlistment.

Hospitals around the country, all voluntarily run, were warned to expect battle casualties.

In addition, large numbers of refugees from Belgium were anticipated. But many institutions, Doncaster Royal Infirmary among them, were already working at maximum capacity and stated flatly that they could not cope with such an influx. A number of wellto-do residents offered parts of their large houses as convalescent accommodation.

Loversall Hall is a typical example. Somewhat surprisingly, Doncaster Corporation offered part of its chief civic building, the Mansion House, for the purpose. By early September the Banqueting Room carpet had been taken

by VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurses, a motley crew of trained, partially trained or simply enthusiastic ladies led by Mrs Pickering, Commandant of the Doncaster Branch.

evening, and Sister Pease offered practical instruction in nursing.

Behind the scenes, however, all was not well.

On 13 September the Town Clerk wrote to Mrs Pickering expressing the Mayor’s great regret that “…the conditions on which the use of a portion of the Mansion House were granted to you for hospital purposes have been broken and … (the Mayor) requires that all the bedsteads … be at once removed, the carpet relaid and the room restored to the condition it was in before…”. The ‘Mansion House Hospital’, therefore, never came into being, and in fact no war casualties arrived in Doncaster until mid-December. Some of these were accommodated at ‘Mr Arnold’s Auxiliary Hospital’, a house named ‘Edenfield’ on Thorne Road, with Mrs Pickering as Matron.

‘Edenfield’ remained as a nursing home after the war ended and many Doncastrians were born there in later years.

Medical and nursing staff left to join the armed forces, causing the House Surgeon to ask for an increase in his salary since he was doing the work of two men. His salary was raised to £250 per annum. The difficulty in finding house surgeons during the war led to an important innovation. In 1918 Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s first female house surgeon, Dr Margaret Shirlaw, was appointed with some misgivings on the part of the House Committee. However, Dr Shirlaw proved a great success, and future advertisements for junior house surgeons invited applications from women.

Who’s the Governor?

Bassetlaw Public Governor Peter Husselbee moved to Worksop from the West Midlands in 1972.

He was in marketing for 36 years working for Esso, and on retiring six years ago he decided to become a governor.

What makes you tick, hobbies, interests?

When I retired I thought I would have plenty of leisure time, in fact I am still looking for the extra leisure time! Not only am I a Trust governor, I’m also Chairman of Redlands Primary School, a committee member of Lindrick Golf Club, Rotary Club member and a keen follower of sport. I played competitive cricket for over forty years, and I’ve played football and rugby for many years. My greatest pleasure is spending time with my three granddaughters and playing golf.

Why did I become a governor?

I was inspired to become a governor after many hospital treatments, which included three heart operations, but it was also the dedicated treatment my family have received over the years. Having worked for 36 years for one of the largest companies in the world who were dedicated to quality and safety, I’m now equally dedicated to quality in all aspects of the Trust, the main one being quality of patient care.

Is the role what I expected?

I’ve found the last six years as a governor challenging, exciting and very rewarding. I’ve seen the Trust go through changes, some of which were difficult, but mainly led to improvement.

I believe the role has changed enormously especially following the problems in Staffordshire. No Trust governor can now stand aside and say I cannot do anything if they are aware of a problem.

I believe that honesty, commitment, openness and an acceptance for change have been the key ingredients for the success of the Trust over the last five years. There’s still a long way to go as the Trust continues to improve integration with community care, general practice and work even more closely with other Trusts.

John Plant and Patricia Ricketts managed to hold on to their seats in the Doncaster Public constituency. As did Patient Governors David Cuckson and John Humphrey. New Staff Governor Lorraine Robinson was successful in her election bid to represent nurse and midwives.

Governor Summary Here’s an outline of the key things governors have focused on in the last couple of months.

The Health and Care of Adults sub-committee looked at discharge communications, while the Health and Care of Young People subcommittee focused on play and distraction facilities for young patients and patient experience. The member surgeries held at Bassetlaw Hospital and DRI were successful, thank you to all those who attended.

Timeout events covered topics including the ‘human factors’ which affect the quality of care provided to patients; fraud in the NHS, the estates challenges currently facing the Trust, Children’s services at Bassetlaw Hospital, the iHospital project, and nurse staffing.

Chairman to stand down

Chris Scholey, Chairman

Our current Chairman Chris Scholey has decided to stand down at the end of 2015 and as a result we will soon be starting the recruitment process for his successor.

C

hris’s role involves being the Chairman of both the Board of Directors (executives and nonexecutives) and the Board of Governors.

As chairman he has a key role in the operational and strategic goals of the Trust

and agrees the objectives of Chief Executive Mike Pinkerton.

Chris joined the Trust at the beginning of 2009, during a period of significant change for the Trust. There have been restructures, new services

developed and the Trust launched its new strategy for the future. There have been significant improvements in patient care, for example healthcare associated infections. In 2008/9, there were 147 cases of C. Difficile and 13 cases of MRSA, compared to 2013/14 where these numbers reduced to 41 and 2 respectively.

We will keep you informed of when the recruitment process will start in future issues of Foundations for Health.

The Chairman’s role includes: • Chair the Board of Directors and Board of Governors, and ensure that they work with each other, and with senior management, effectively.

• Leadership of the Board of Directors and the Board of Governors, ensuring their effectiveness in all aspects of their role.

• Ensure that the Board as a whole plays a full part in the development and determination of the Trust’s strategy and overall objectives, while having regard to the views of stakeholders, particularly the Board of Governors.

• As the guardian of the Board’s decisionmaking processes, manage the conduct of the Board’s business.

• Establish the principles, structure and processes for the proper governance of the Trust.

• Promote the highest standards of integrity, probity and corporate governance throughout the organisation and particularly at board level.

• Ensure effective and open communication with members and other stakeholders.

• Act as a key figurehead and representative of the organisation.

• Ensure that the continuous development needs of directors and governors are met.

• Promote a culture of good governance, and demonstrate the Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.
