Cameras roll as our staff feature in new ITV series

A new ITV series, which will be screened next year, is being filmed at the Royal Derby Hospital. Four camera crews have been filming in various locations around the hospital over recent weeks as our busy staff go about their work.

The new series, which hasn’t yet been named, will feature the wide variety of people who keep the hospital running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Our chief executive Sue James says she is proud to have the Royal Derby used as the location for this new primetime series: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been selected to feature in this exciting new series for ITV. “It’s a tremendous accolade that the producers have chosen the Royal Derby Hospital, based on the caring ethos of our staff and the pride we all take in caring for our patients.

“I’m especially pleased that this ground-breaking series will look at the wide range of people who keep our services running day and night, every single day of the year. This isn’t just about our doctors and nurses, it’s about the individuals doing so many different jobs and, without them all, our hospital wouldn’t be able to function.”

2 By the time you read this, a large amount of the filming for ITV’s new documentary series, set at the Royal Derby Hospital, will be complete.

Hours of footage will have been shot, dozens of people interviewed and life in our hospital captured in all its aspects.

warm personalities carrying it all out that we wanted to take this opportunity to put it all in the spotlight.

Airing in 2015, the four-part show will be a landmark for Derby Hospitals: with a prime-time slot and an audience of millions, it will be the highest profile account of our work yet made.

We have recently had successful Derby entrepreneur Mel Morris make the biggest single donation in our history to help fund a cutting-edge robotic surgery machine which means we can now offer patients the highest quality healthcare possible. We cannot thank his generosity enough.

The reason we agreed to open our doors and be part of this programme is quite simple: we are proud of not only what we do here in Derby, but of those who get it all done.

affects as many people worldwide as breast cancer, is a testament to the quality of our specialist teams.

Every day I walk around this hospital and meet staff dealing with challenges and pressures at every level, and doing so with passion and warmth, making time for patients, making sure we give them the best experience we can.

Yet so much of this passes unrecognised.

We really believe that when viewers across the country see this upcoming television series, they will see Derby Hospitals for the rich, dramatic and enthralling tapestry of life that it is.

And for staff and patients in Derby, I hope it makes them proud – as proud as I am every day - of their hospital.

Going behind the scenes as the TV cameras roll If you have been a patient or visitor at the Royal Derby Hospital over recent weeks, you may have seen the camera crews at work, gathering material for a brand new ITV series which will reach our TV screens next year.

The series, which hasn’t been given a title yet, will be screened at prime time on ITV1 in 2015. Four one hour programmes will focus on our amazing staff, showing the rich variety of people who work at the Royal Derby, caring for patients and keeping such a busy hospital running.

The programmes are being made by the award-winning production company The Garden. They have produced popular hospital-based factual series such as ’24 Hours in A&E’ and ‘Keeping Britain Alive’.

The aim is to produce a series that is warm, entertaining and moving, and which will give viewers an insight into the scale and variety of the work that happens every day at the hospital.

Executive producer Lucy Bowden says “It’s a real top to bottom look at a large modern hospital told through the eyes of the staff. It’s not really about the mechanics of the hospital, it’s about the people, and we’re focusing on both the medical and non-medical staff. Lots

of different services are provided under one roof and everyone who works at the hospital will have a different perspective on what goes on there - that’s what we want to get across.”

The company settled on Derby as their location after visiting several UK hospitals - and it is the pride and passion shown by our staff which persuaded them to locate this new series here.

Lana Salah, series producer and director says “We’re excited about this show. This is a chance to look at all those places in the hospital people don’t usually think about, like the helipad, the car park and the staff involved with them. We’ve been so impressed with the pride the staff take in their work at the hospital - they seem really loyal and have a great relationship with each other.

“We’ve met some wonderful characters and they’ll be important, because they will paint a picture of how their jobs and lives come together in this hospital. It will be interesting to see who shines through.”

Robotic surgery comes to Derby thanks to £1.2 million gift A state of the art surgical robot has been installed in an operating theatre at the Royal Derby Hospital, thanks to the generosity of local entrepreneur Mel Morris.

Mr Morris has given £1.2 million to Derby Hospitals Charity to purchase a robotic surgery device which is enabling our surgeons to use one of the world’s most advanced surgical robots to improve the outcomes for patients undergoing complex cancer operations.

Consultant urologist and lead for robotic surgery, Stephen Thomas, is the first Derby surgeon to use the new robot and he is impressed by what he has seen: “This is a major and hugely significant operative advance. It allows us to carry out highly complex operations with 3D vision and greater surgical accuracy.

This will translate to better care for our cancer patients and it will reinforce our position as a leading Cancer Centre within the East Midlands region.”

The robot is already being used for urology and colorectal patients and in the New Year it will be rolled out to other specialities including gynaecology and head and neck cancers.

Derby leads the way in new UK breast cancer study We have launched one of the UK’s biggest research projects into breast cancer - and the results could change the way the condition is treated in the future.

Consultant Breast Surgeon Amit Goyal has been awarded a research grant of £2.9 million to fund his team’s work, involving 50 or more hospitals across the UK taking part in a decade-long study.

This study will examine whether current treatment to remove lymph nodes in a woman’s armpit is an effective - or necessary procedure.

Women with early stage breast cancer that has spread to one or two lymph glands in the armpit receive chemotherapy, hormone therapy or sometimes both. These women also have treatment to their armpit,

undergoing radiotherapy or further surgery to remove all the lymph glands.

However, these treatments commonly lead to problems including swelling of the arm, shoulder stiffness, numbness or pain.

Keeping yourself With the arrival of winter comes additional pressure facing our hospital services. As the temperatures drop, people with long term health conditions and the elderly and frail often become unwell.

It’s important that our busy A&E department is used properly this winter. Please don’t come to A&E unless it’s a genuine medical emergency.

But we are also asking you to do your bit to help us this winter.

It’s important that you know what you can do to keep well this winter.

We have a winter plan in place to help us deal with an expected increase in hospital admissions over the coming months. We’re appointing more than 100 additional nursing staff to help us cope.

Taking control of your health in winter If you, or someone you know, has a health condition - such as asthma or diabetes, or a chest, heart, liver or kidney complaint take control this winter by taking a few simple steps.

Get a flu jab. It can protect you all winter. If you have a long term health condition and you catch flu you’re at a greater risk of complications. Contact your GP surgery to make an appointment.

We’re offering all our NHS staff a free vaccine to protect themselves, their families and their patients. Last winter we won an NHS award for ’Most Improved Seasonal Flu Campaign’ after successfully vaccinating more than 75% of our frontline health care workers.

We’re aiming to reach that target again this year. Our medical director Dr Nigel Sturrock has been leading the way.

Catch it, kill it, bin it

Your local pharmacist offers free, qualified health advice at any time, and no appointment is necessary. They can give you expert help on everyday illnesses and answer any questions about prescribed and over-the-counter medicines.

Almost everyone will have a cough or cold at some point this winter. Don’t spread your germs. Cough or sneeze into a tissue, put it in the bin and wash your hands to stop the spread of germs.

Know when NHS services near your home are open A&E and GPs aren’t your only options.

You’ll often be seen quicker at other NHS services, so check out NHS Choices

Think ahead

It’s the perfect excuse to eat well and wrap up warm.

Keep warm inside and out, by keeping active and having regular hot drinks and nutritious meals.

Make sure that you have enough medication to last when your GP surgery may be closed. Don’t forget to order repeat prescriptions well in advance of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Improving discharge for

everyone

If you are a patient in one of our hospitals this winter, or you are caring for a family member who is an inpatient, you will know who important it is that we organise your discharge in a safe and speedy way.

This winter we are launching a new campaign, called Ready to Go!, which aims to improve our discharge process for everyone - our patients, their carers and our staff.

Ready to Go! brings together staff on our wards and in the various departments around the hospital who all play a part in discharging patients.

Ready to Go! aims to make sure that each time a patient is coming to the end of their stay, every hospital department will act quickly to make sure you’re able to leave hospital as quickly as possible.

For example, pharmacy staff need to prepare medication for you to take home; phlebotomy staff will run blood tests; ward staff will make sure your information is sent on to a GP or nursing home - each patient will have different needs but each discharge requires a set of actions to be completed.

Helping our staff and patients as the nights draw in As winter takes hold, we’re helping our staff who work at the Royal Derby Hospital through the night by introducing a new £2 flat rate for on-site car parking between 5pm and 8am.

The new overnight parking rate is available for staff as well as other car park users who may need to visit the hospital during the hours of darkness.

“We know staff have concerns about where to safely park their car overnight and we’ve heard what’s been said in the latest Staff Impressions Survey and we’ve come up with an innovative solution” says Associate Director of Facilities Paul Brooks.

The suggestion of a new special overnight parking rate came from

car park manager Melanie Ray who says “It’s really important for the 100s of people who work through the night across the hospital that they can park safely.”

It’s a Win Win Win! It was a special night for Derby Hospitals at the East Midlands Leadership Academy NHS Recognition Awards.

We enjoyed a triple success with all three of our shortlisted staff being declared winners in their respective categories.

Our Associate Director of Facilities Paul Brooks was named Patient Champion of the Year. Paul has been instrumental in a number of patientfocused campaigns, including Making Your Moment Matter, the creation of five pledges which outline how we can give every patient the best possible care.

And Adrian Piggott, our Leadership Development Advisor, was named Mentor/Coach of the Year for his work in learning and development.

“This is a tremendous achievement, I want to congratulate all three of our winners on behalf of all our staff. We have worked hard to develop our leadership capability over the past few years, and tonight’s results show how well our staff are rising to the challenges faced in today’s health service.

They represent all that is best in 21st century healthcare and we are very proud of their success” says chief executive Sue James.

Our A&E consultant Dr Dan Boden won Development Champion of the Year for his work helping to redesign the workforce in A&E, inspiring and motivating his colleagues.

Wristband idea wins award An innovation which helps to make sure that patients receive the best care in our hospitals has won a top award. Dr Gillian Lowrey and her team have won the Team of the Year category at the East Midlands Innovation in Healthcare Awards.

Respiratory Consultant Dr Lowrey had the idea of using colour-coded wristbands to make it simple to identify how much oxygen each patient needs.

Oxygen is often administered without a prescription but excessive amounts can be fatal for a patient.

n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n We were nominated with East Midlands Ambulance Service at this year’s Heartsafe UK Awards.

Our nomination was in the Emergency Services Team of the Year category.

Our A&E staff and cardiologists were nominated for their role in saving the life of John Gilmartin whose heart stopped 17 times. John – who has since made a full recovery – and his wife Sally were our guests of honour at the awards evening in Manchester.

Midwife Sue shortlisted for her compassion The pioneering work of our specialist bereavement midwife has been recognised nationally. Sue Rucklidge has been shortlisted in the Royal College of Midwifery annual awards for her work helping bereaved families. Sue is a finalist in the Award for Bereavement Care.

She is delighted to be shortlisted “I am so proud that we’ve been recognised in this way, I feel really honoured to be shortlisted as one of 3 finalists. This recognises the fact that the care we offer to families here in Derby is leading the way nationally.”

Our Head of Midwifery Jane Haslam paid tribute to Sue’s achievement “It is fantastic news that Sue has been shortlisted for these national awards. Sue and her team continue to support women, families and staff through an extremely emotional and traumatic time.”

Sue is a previous ‘Pride of Derby’ winner, she was ‘Best Frontline Member of Staff’ last year after being nominated by a couple for the support she gave them during three pregnancy losses.

They praised Sue’s compassionate care and said she was their rock in helping them through such difficult times.

The winners of the Royal College of Midwifery Awards will be announced at an Awards lunch to be held in London next March.

Macmillan cancer centre wins award for its outstanding care Our Macmillan cancer care centre at the Royal Derby Hospital has been rated as one of the best in country. The centre has been awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) in recognition of high standards in cancer care.

The centre provides free information, financial, emotional and practical support for families affected by cancer and in the past year, it has helped more than 3,500 people.

Lisa Freeman, our Macmillan Cancer Information Manager, says “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award. The aim of the award is to ensure that the space is sensitive in design, with room to chat in confidence whilst making a real difference in helping people cope with their diagnosis. It is very reassuring to have our work recognised and valued.”

Our renal department’s innovative use of Skype technology to communicate with home dialysis patients has been Highly Commended in the Value and Improvement in Telehealth category at this year’s HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards

The Derby team was honoured for the creation of a dedicated service at the Royal Derby Hospital for elderly patients.

Congratulations to our Clinical Support Worker of the Year

A member of our renal team has been named Clinical Healthcare Support Worker of the Year.

We were runners-up in the 2014 Public Sector Sustainability awards.

Chris Swan, Clinical Technical Officer in the Renal Dialysis Unit, took the top honour at a new conference held for our clinical healthcare support workers.

Ruth Smith, generic technical instructor in the Parkinson’s Team and Adam McEvoy, healthcare assistant in Nuclear Medicine, were highly commended.

Chris’s role involves assessing patients and planning and delivering all aspects of their dialysis care, he is also part of the home haemodialysis team.

Libby Keep, Head of Governance, who presented Chris with his award, says “I was thrilled to be involved with the conference for this hugely valuable part of our workforce and Chris is a worthy winner.”

Our work to encourage staff and visitors to use public or sustainable transport was honoured with a nomination in the Most Sustainable Public Sector Project category. We have reduced numbers of single-occupancy vehicles by 6% and seen increases in staff walking, cycling and using public transport.

Our worldbeating stars

Behind the headlines

After a busy day in our A&E department, most staff would want to go home to flop on the sofa. But not Liz Burgess or Rachel Parish.

When they get home, they’ll be out training, either running, cycling or shooting.

In August, consultant Liz Burgess won silver at the 2014 European Duathlon Championships in Austria. That’s not bad for someone who can also handle a cardiac resuscitation on a busy Friday night at the hospital.

And in July, registrar Rachel Parish proudly won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, shooting in the women’s double trap. She’d previously won gold and silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Clare’s visit to Downing Street Our advanced clinical practitioner Clare Sutherland was invited to a Downing Street reception for NHS nursing staff where she met the Prime Minister.

“I got to shake his hand, I introduced myself and asked him to sign our Celebrating Success poster whilst I quickly explained my work in Derby as an advanced clinical practitioner” says Clare “It was a very special day in my nursing career.”

inspirational Work under way to clear former DRI site The media’s interest in the future of the former DRI site in the centre of Derby is continuing.

We have announced that after securing a £3.7 million loan from the Department of Health, work is beginning to clear the site of the former DRI. A contractor is removing asbestos, with work to clear the site expected to begin in January. Several of the buildings are listed and will be retained. They

include Wilderslowe House and Lodge, the statues of Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria and the fence and wall which runs along London Road.

We have also made it a planning condition that the London Road frontage supporting two pairs of “onion” shaped domed roofs are retained and incorporated into any future development.

Our hospitals rated amongst cleanest in England

Fracture clinic shows how it’s done

Derby’s two hospitals are amongst the cleanest in the country. The cleanliness scores for the Royal Derby and London Road hospitals have been published by NHS England.

Our Fracture Clinic team have been showcasing their work as part of the first National Casting Day.

The Royal Derby scored 99.96% for cleanliness, above the national average of 97.25%. The privacy, dignity and wellbeing of patients also scored highly at 95.95%, the national average is 88.87%.

The older London Road Community Hospital also scored highly with cleanliness rated at 99.88% with privacy, dignity and wellbeing rated at 91.82%.

More cancer patients positive about their care

Our busy orthopaedic outpatients department sees around 450 new patients each month with a variety of different fractures.

Visitors experienced what it would be like to be a patient in the fracture clinic.

Our chief operating officer, Helen Scott-South, volunteered to have a cast put on her wrist “The biggest noticeable difference is in the weight - today’s casts are so much lighter than the traditional plaster casts of old. It was interesting to put myself in the place of a patient and I was really impressed by how caring all the staff were.”

More than 90 % of our cancer patients say their care has been excellent or very good, according to the latest national cancer patient experience survey.

It is the third consecutive year of improvements in patient’s experiences of their cancer care and treatment in Derby. 87% rated their care excellent or very good in 2012, this rose to 89% last year and it now stands at 91% of patients.

“It is rewarding to know that so many of our patients think highly of their cancer care at Derby Hospitals” says Cathy Winfield, the Trust’s Chief Nurse and Director of Patient Experience.

Governors in focus

A Change in Directors

Nigel Horridge has been a member of the Council of Governors for three years. He tells us more about the role:

The Board recently said farewell to its longest serving Non-Executive Director, Professor Stephen Bailey. Stephen became a Non-Executive of the Trust when it was first authorised in 2004 and before that was on the Board of former Trusts, taking up his role in 2002.

“Having been in the Royal Derby Hospital several times as a patient, in the Pulvertaft hand centre and the endoscopy unit, I knew firsthand how well the hospital did in the areas I had experienced but I wanted to understand more about the running of the whole hospital. I also thought my 37 years’ experience at Rolls-Royce could help me to understand the business aspects and to look for improvements at the hospital.

Stephen was a tremendous asset to the Trust, holding key roles such as the Vice Chair, Senior Independent Director and Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee. After 12 years he decided to retire from the Board but still continues as the Head of the University of Nottingham’s School of Law.

...my advice would be give it a go - you will make a difference.

I’ve done voluntary work in many areas for over 45 years since I was a boy - I have always felt it is important that each of us do something positive to make a difference in the world in our own time. At the moment I am also a community governor at a school in Eastwood and I have recently returned from a voluntary trip to Serbia where 16 of us renovated a house, to be used as a safe house for girls rescued from sex trafficking, as well as distributing food parcels to the poor in the city of Novi Sad. Whilst being a Derby Hospitals governor I have sat on several committees covering areas

including judging the Celebrating Success awards, liaising with the hospital’s external auditors and reviewing the wards from a patient experience perspective and more recently from an emergency viewpoint.

It has been a great experience so far and I look forward to continuing to make a difference to this great hospital the people of Derby are so fortunate to have. If anyone has ever considered doing this my advice would be give it a go - you will make a difference.“ A list of all current governors is published on the Trust website.

The University has nominated his replacement as Professor Avril Drummond, who joined us on 1 November. Avril’s professional background is in Occupational Therapy and she holds a number of senior research roles, and has a particular interest in Stroke Rehabillitation.

Avril says “I am delighted to be given this opportunity to join the Trust Board and to strengthen the partnership between our two organisations” Chris Hole is the new Vice Chair and Sir Stephen Moss has taken over the role of Senior Independent Director.

Another successful Annual Members Meeting This year’s Annual Members’ meeting took place in September, when over 100 Trust members joined staff and governors at the new venue of the Roundhouse on Derby’s Pride Park. The event was hosted by John Rivers, Chairman, and Sue James, our Chief Executive.

We used short films this year within our presentation, allowing us to showcase our work and to represent and describe the contribution of many more staff and patients.

Feedback on the use of films was very positive and attendees also said they enjoyed the comprehensive question and answer session.
