“Courageous” Terry gets Downing Street award
A Royal Derby Hospital volunteer who has helped out at Derby Hospitals for nearly three decades has been given an award by David Cameron for his work. Terry Bird, 78, was called “a courageous man” by the Prime Minister, as he was awarded the Point of Light Award. Terry, who helps run the tea bar in the hospital’s breast unit, was invited to London to collect the award, which recognises hardworking volunteers across the globe. He started volunteering in the breast unit after he was treated for male breast cancer in 2007, becoming one of only 300 men diagnosed with the disease each year in the UK. But for 22 years before this he volunteered at the cardiac rehabilitation centre at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, helping patients come to terms with their illnesses and supporting them back to health.

He said: “I love spending time here, I like being around people. In my life, I’ve had so much help from the NHS, I thought I should give something back.”
