Going that extra mile

Our Chief Nurse’s caring vision Improving care for the elderly and those with dementia at our hospitals, as well as continuing a scheme which gets more senior nurses away from their desks and back to the floor, is high on the agenda for our new Director of Patient Experience and Chief Nurse, Cathy Winfield.

Cathy is not new to the Trust as she was previously Deputy Director of Nursing.

The ‘Best Behind the Scenes’ member of staff award

Patients, visitors and staff nominate those individuals who they think have gone that extra mile and delivered the highest possible standards of care.

went to Sheila Harris, medical secretary from hepatology (liver disease) who was nominated by a relative for going that extra mile and more for always being caring and compassionate.

Entries are judged every three months with winners being presented with their awards by the Trust’s chief executive Sue James at a Board of Directors meeting.

Nominated by a relative, the ‘Best Team’ award went to the intensive care unit for their exceptional care in making a very difficult situation so much more bearable.

The ‘Best Frontline’ member of staff award went to senior sister Pat Fox from medicine for the elderly ward 406. Pat was nominated by a visitor for the work she does in finding ways to improve and make things easier for the patients on her ward.

Patient inspectors do the rounds Patients and the public joined staff on a self assessment inspection of our hospitals called PLACE (Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment) by dropping in on wards and clinics unannounced to check on cleanliness, privacy and dignity, the internal and external condition of buildings, witnessing how meals were served as well as tasting and rating the food.

Sarah Todd from Derby joined one of the inspection teams and said: “It’s been wonderful being involved in assessing the hospital because the patient’s view is vital - the hospital’s services absolutely have to

be designed around the patient. As someone who will potentially be a service user of the hospital, it was great for me to pick where I wanted to go to see services I may one day access.”

England’s Chief Nurse NEWS opens new School of ROUND UP Health Sciences The Chief Nursing Officer for England, Jane Cummings, has officially opened the University of Nottingham’s new £4.5 million School of Health Sciences at the Royal Derby Hospital.

The new School provides a modern training facility where nurses and allied health professionals receive tuition. The opening formed part of a day-long nursing conference titled ‘Commitment to Compassionate Care’ which was attended by nursing staff from across Derbyshire.

In her keynote conference address Jane Cummings said that compassionate care was the business of all nursing professionals.

The Chief Nursing Officer said she had seen some examples of “great care” during a previous visit to the Royal Derby Hospital.

Helping the environment

The Trust has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for the second time for reducing its carbon emissions by 6.2% between 2011 and 2012, saving the Trust £275,000. During the two year period we cut our carbon emissions by 3,583 tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to one year of electricity and gas for 478 homes.

The Carbon Trust Standard is a mark of excellence and is awarded only to those organisations who measure, manage and reduce their carbon emissions year on year.

Celebrating Florence Derbyshire’s nurses, midwives, care givers and hospital volunteers paraded through Derby city centre to the Cathedral to celebrate the life of Florence Nightingale at a special Commemorative Service.

Saturday shoppers watched as the parade, led by the Trust’s Chief Nurse, made its way through the city centre to Derby Cathedral.

The Derby Hospitals Choir led the singing at the special service which was attended by the county’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff as well as MPs and local civic dignitaries.

In his address, the Bishop of Derby said Florence Nightingale was an important daughter of Derbyshire.

He said she broke the mould in many different ways, developing professional standards for nurses which underpin the profession to this day. He described Florence Nightingale as “a truly remarkable woman.”

Recognition for our top quality care

The Trust has been named as one of the 40 top hospitals in the country for 2013 by the data organisation CHKS. The award is based on the evaluation of 22 performance indicators covering safety, clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of care.

Art funding to help patient experience

The Arts Council and National Lottery have awarded the Trust £70,000 to help fund the innovative Air arts programme which aims to improve the patient experience by using art as a distraction on our hospital corridors, wards and departments. www.twitter.com/DerbyHospitals

Inspirational health leaders The Trust is celebrating after winning and being shortlisted for a number of awards in national competitions.

Dr Rob Skelly - consultant in Parkinson’s has been named the top consultant in the Decade of Difference awards from the Parkinson’s Academy.

Dr Skelly and his team have spent the past decade developing some of the best services in the country for the care and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s.

National recognition for renal consultant Dr Richard Fluck, consultant in renal medicine has become the UK National Clinical Director for Renal disease. He will still continue as a practising consultant here at the Trust whilst undertaking this National role.

Care Integration Awards n Diabetes Care A partnership between GPs and the hospital which delivers diabetes care to over 2500 patients n PROCEED (pre-conception care for women with diabetes) The project aims to improve the health of diabetic women who are planning a pregnancy.

Staff asked for their impressions As a Trust we are always looking at different ways of engaging with staff, so in early Spring all staff were given the chance to tell us what it’s like to work for Derby Hospitals in a staff survey. The views and feedback of our staff are extremely important to us as they help us to understand what motivates them to provide the best possible care to our patients.

We will be sharing the results of the survey with staff during the summer and putting actions in place to address any ideas or improvements.

Flying the KITE A brand new department has opened at the Children’s Hospital to care for children with complex medical needs.

This dedicated department called KITE (Kids in their Environment) cares for children who have life limiting diseases and chronic conditions such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis and chronic asthma. Children can come to the department as a day patient for all their care needs, avoiding lengthy hospital stays. This means that they can live at home, go to school and spend time with family and friends.

Mum Elaine Green from Long Eaton, said: “Sam was diagnosed at three months old with epilepsy, curvature of the spine and quadriplegia cerebral palsy – a condition which affects all limbs of the body. I receive brilliant support from the KITE team. They have been amazing. It is truly a superb service.”

The KITE department is situated in the former Children’s Emergency Department next to the Children’s outpatient department. The department was officially opened by Ollie Hynd, MBE and paralympic gold medal winner.

Fast track service benefits patients Patients with conditions such as anaemia or suspected heart pain can now be fast tracked from Accident & Emergency or directly by their GP into a dedicated centre at the Royal Derby Hospital.

The Accident & Emergency department and medical assessment unit have seen a rise in the number of emergency admissions over the last few years. This has led our medical teams to create an Ambulatory Care Centre where patients who are medically stable but need further investigation and tests can be fast tracked into the centre so treatment can begin immediately.

This service is an enormous benefit to patients as the majority will be able to go home the same day knowing that they are receiving the treatment they need without having to be admitted into hospital. This has proved such a success that we are now trialing this for surgical patients and hoping to extend this service to our Children’s Hospital.

Local care thanks to new scanner The Children’s Hospital has taken deliver of a Paediatric Cardiac/Ultrasound (Echocardiogram) scanner which means that young patients who have cardiac problems can now have more of their follow-up care here at the hospital instead of travelling to Leicester.

The state-of-the-art scanner produces high quality images of the structure and function of a child’s heart and was jointly funded by Derby Hospitals Charity and the British Heart Foundation.

Sue Kennedy is a Senior Educator and Physiotherapist in Rheumatology n How long have you been in your current job?

I’ve been a senior clinical educator and physiotherapist in rheumatology for a year and a half. n What does your job involve?

My job involves teaching third and fifth year medical students from Nottingham University about rheumatology and musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. n What do you like the most about your job?

I’m passionate about education and life-long learning, so for me the best part of my job is being involved in developing future doctors’ clinical skills and knowledge.

My job requires me to keep up-todate with the latest evidence from

research into rheumatology and musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. As part of this work, the rheumatology team have introduced a Progressive Resistance Training Programme for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. We discovered that using high-intensity resistance training in the gym had a positive effect on inflammatory arthritis, such as increasing lean muscles, reducing fat, improving strength and pain. We were extremely pleased when we won a National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society’s Patients in Focus award for this piece of work.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you? n

Umm – that’s a tricky one! A quick survey of my colleagues came up with organised, driven and selfmotivated.

This year’s theme was around gardening which is a really good activity for patients to continue with as it helps manage both physical and psychological issues such as mood.

Fiona Lindop, specialist physiotherapist said: “Parkinson’s

Awareness Week is an opportunity for us to encourage everyone to find out more about Parkinson’s. Derby Hospitals is recognised by Parkinson’s UK as a centre of good practice, and staff provide care for more than 900 people with Parkinson’s.”

Parkinson’s patient Ann Pitt from Milford who was helping out at the event, said: “When I was first diagnosed, it was a big shock. I knew nothing about Parkinson’s. I’ve had a lot of help and support and now I have the right frame of mind and I keep busy with exercise and my interests. I’ve pulled back my life and I feel very well.”

After her diagnosis, Ann was referred to the London Road Community Hospital’s specialist assessment and rehabilitation centre, which includes the Parkinson’s clinic, for

Medicine for Members Talks Louise Hammond, specialist occupational therapist, rehabilitation medicine, led the talk and was joined by other key members of the MND Team including representatives from the MND Association. The team explained that MND is progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. It is a relatively rare disease and can affect how people walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.

There was a focus on the ways in which people living with MND can be supported to manage symptoms and continue to make choices about how they want to live their life.

The most poignant part of the evening was when John, a person living with MND, talked about how the condition affects him and his

family. His talk was both moving and inspirational.

Honouring our dedicated volunteers More than 76 incredible volunteers with over 625 years combined service have been honoured at an awards ceremony hosted by the Trust’s chief executive, Sue James.

Not only do our volunteers give up their free time, but they also play a huge part in the day to day life of our hospitals by providing many services such as meet and greet, buggy driving, manicurists, library services, newspaper trolleys, health champions and general ward and clinic support.

Royal Derby Hospital League of Friends volunteer, Rita Archer was honoured for her 40 years service and other volunteers received awards for five, 10, 15 and 20 years service.

Sammy Bacon, who delivers patient notes, received his five year award after deciding to become a volunteer after he spent a year in hospital following an accident. He said: “Volunteering has given me back my confidence and I love meeting everyone and chatting to them.”

The volunteers were presented with chocolates, flowers, Scottish Crystal and Royal Crown Derby.

Meeting the needs of our community The Trust’s chief executive, Sue James and members of the executive team have been out and about in the community talking to local people about our hospital strategy for the next five years.

The idea is for us to share our vision and plans with as many local people as possible to ensure the local community receive the healthcare that meets their needs.

A moment of carelessness To promote Road Safety Week the Trust teamed up with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit and East Midlands Ambulance Service to illustrate the grim reality of being involved in a road crash.

To create an impact outside the main entrance of the Royal Derby Hospital were the remains of a wrecked car, a crumpled motorbike, a mock-up resuscitation room with a ‘dummy patient’ and therapists demonstrating the aids used to help someone walk again. This shock scenario was used to demonstrate the four most common reasons for people being involved in road crashes; drinkdriving, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

Sarah Holt, occupational therapist, said: “I think it’s when people come for physiotherapy and rehabilitation that they realise what an impact a crash can have on their lives. The shock of how long it can take to get your life back on track really hits home then.”
