How are we performing?

We, along with all other NHS Trusts, continuously monitor our progress against a series of targets that are set both nationally and locally.

Winter is always a challenging time for NHS services and this one has proved no different. More patients visited our hospitals over the last few months than we have seen before – an issue shared by our colleagues in neighbouring trusts.

More than 2300 patients arrived at our emergency department between 31 December and 3 January. It makes me enormously proud that our highly skilled staff were able to manage the challenging circumstances with such professionalism and commitment.

We are working closely with our partners in the community and social care to do all we can to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care in the most appropriate setting.

I would like to thank every member of staff for their hard work, passion and commitment to providing our patients with the highest standards of care.

Cllr Roz Gladden performs the traditional Topping Out ceremony

Liverpool gets Royal gift from Father Christmas Santa Claus paid an early visit to Liverpool to deliver a very special gift, leading celebrations to mark completion of the highest point of the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The Topping Out ceremony was performed by the Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Roz Gladden on the roof of the £335m new Royal. It was followed by a festive reception in what will be the new hospital’s atrium which was lined with Christmas trees and fairy lights, and decked out like a Santa’s Grotto.

Topping Out ceremonies are traditionally used to celebrate the final beam - or equivalent – being placed on the tallest point of a new structure. The Deputy Lord Mayor performed the Topping Out by planting a yew tree into a concrete plinth.

Entertainment was provided by Alsop High School Choir, Merseywave Music Community Choir and Shine Gospel Choir. The event was hosted and funded by Carillion and their contractors and all construction was halted for the duration of the event.

Since work began in February 2014, 1666 local workers have been employed on site, with 357

of those workers coming from areas with high unemployment rates. 90 apprenticeships and 99 work experience placements have also been provided on site.

Together with Carillion, the new Royal development has introduced a Community Fund providing £100,000 over three years for local groups.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, said: “This monumental event, which has been hosted and supported by Carillion and their contractors, is an opportunity to look back and celebrate the amazing achievements in the development of the new Royal, by the construction workers on site and our own dedicated project team and

clinical advisors, who started planning the new hospital nearly ten years ago.

“This is the biggest construction project that Liverpool has seen for years and is the start of a massive transformation for the city. The new Royal and the creation of the Liverpool Health Campus will put Liverpool on the world map for life sciences and give the people of Merseyside a hospital to be extremely proud of.”

Simon Webb, managing director of Carillion PLC, said: “This is an opportunity for us to thank all those involved in the project and particularly the men and women who have worked on the construction of what will be an iconic landmark on the Liverpool skyline.”

Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Roz Gladden said: “It was an honour to perform the Topping Out ceremony and receive this early Christmas present on behalf of the people of Liverpool.

It was so exciting to see the spectacular views of the Liverpool skyline that will be available to patients when the hospital opens.

“This is a very special time for healthcare in Liverpool and today shows where Liverpool is heading in terms of health and wellbeing. This hospital – and the developments that will follow – will not only benefit local communities, but people around the world. It’s great that even in its development, this project has created so many opportunities for local people.”

New Royal construction update The Royal continues to take shape and construction of the new hospital has now reached the highest point of the building.

Fit out works are underway at all floors up level four and the mockup ophthalmology outpatient room has now been completed, with staff commenting on the quality of the finishes.

All floor slab installations of the Clinical Support Services Building (CSSB) are now complete as is steelwork for the CSSB hospital link bridge, which has been erected and the metal floor decking is in place.

Accelerating into the future of life sciences research Liverpool’s future as a world class life science hub has taken a huge step forward as construction of a new £25m laboratory development that will enable innovative research into antibiotic resistance began.

The new Liverpool Life Sciences Accelerator, co-locates the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and a raft of relevant small and medium size enterprizes.

The 70,000 square foot building will provide stateof-the-art laboratory space and offices.

Construction of the new hospital has now reached the highest point

Situated on Daulby Street, within the grounds of the Royal, the Accelerator will have five floors.

Two floors will be available for commercial laboratories and office facilities for Small & Medium-sized Enterprises involved in developing products that will improve patient care and treatment outcomes. A further two floors will be devoted to LSTM’s Resistance mitigation portfolio,

Don’t bin it, Warp-it We have been taking part in a project to find new homes for office equipment that is no longer needed.

Warp-it moves reusable equipment and furniture around the Trust, making it easier for staff to get surpluss office quipment and furniture to and from each other.

Once registered, staff can use the online tool to advertise items they no longer need or to search for something that they want.

Ian Stenton, head of sustainability, said: “To be able to look for equipment that can replace old items

is extremely beneficial. The new system calculates the financial and environmental savings that we can all make by reusing equipment, rather than disposing and buying new. Sign up to Warp-it to see what equipment is available and what savings you could make.”

Helen Jackson, director of strategy and transformation at the Trust, said: “The Accelerator will provide a hub for life sciences, enabling clinicians, academics and industry to collaborate in research and innovation to develop their ideas into the very latest life-saving treatments.

“This building is the first stage in a far-reaching development strategy that will define Liverpool’s future economy as a world leader in life sciences and boost regeneration of the Knowledge Quarter area of the city.

“The Accelerator is the first development in the creation of a city centre health campus that will be built on the site of the existing Royal Liverpool University Hospital. This Liverpool Health Campus will consist of 200,000 square feet of space, attracting life sciences, biomedical research companies and health organisations. This will generate 5,000 high value jobs and help the city develop a thriving life science economy.”

Professor Janet Hemingway CBE, Director of LSTM, added: “LSTM was one of the first institutions in the world to recognise the importance of studying and understanding the phenomenon of drug resistance.

“With a proven track record of industry partnership and ground breaking, lifesaving research, the Accelerator will allow us to further boost Liverpool’s reputation as a world renowned centre of expertise. The collaboration with the Royal and SMEs will benefit global health by taking research and innovation from the lab to where it is needed most and will encourage further investment in Liverpool.

Building on site started in November, with the Life Sciences Accelerator due to open in June 2017.

Ground-breaking Academic Palliative Care Unit opens to patients Patients with the most complex palliative care needs are to benefit from the opening of a new, ground-breaking Academic Palliative Care Unit at the Royal.

The 12-bedded unit, which is based on Ward 4Y, is unique in this country. It will provide world leading compassionate clinical care for patients with the most complex, high dependency healthcare needs in a specialist environment.

The unit will provide an exceptional experience for patients and carers, and reducing length of stay wherever possible so that patients can return home or to another place of care according to their wishes and as is most clinically appropriate for them.

The unit is being staffed by leading specialist consultants, specialist end of life care nurses and therapists and is supported by the hospital’s Care for the Dying Volunteers.

It will work as an integrated part of specialist palliative care services and alongside colleagues from across the hospital wherever patients will most benefit from the care it can provide.

Key features of the unit include a Families and Friends Suite where difficult conversations can be had in a more private, relaxing environment. Families and patients can spend time together, and families can stay overnight, if needed. It is also available to be used by people with loved ones on other wards.

Extra-special attention has been paid to the environment for patients, families and staff including the innovative use of colour on floors and furnishings.

The unit has comfortable yet practical furniture, equipment to enhance meal times and personal care, so patients feel secure and respected. It also has specially chosen artworks with a local Liverpool theme.

Research and innovation will be a crucial part of the work of the unit meaning that patients receive the very best up to the minute care. This also gives patients the opportunity to leave a legacy for the benefit of future patients as innovations and learning are shared.

The unit is underpinned by the long standing partnership between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool, and the University of Liverpool.

Improving the quality of life for our patients

CQC inspection – it’s our time to show our achievements The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will carry out its inspection of the Trust week commencing 14 March 2016.

The inspection will focus on urgent and emergency care, medical care, surgery, critical care, children and young people, outpatients and diagnostic imaging and end of life care.

Inspectors will be observing care, reviewing patient notes and speaking to patients and carers about whether our services are safe, caring, responsive, effective and well-led.

The CQC is the independent regulator for health and social care in England. It makes sure all organisations providing NHS services provide people with safe, high quality care and encourages improvements where needed.

It is important to remember that the CQC visit is an opportunity to showcase your hard work and achievements and to demonstrate the high standards that we consistently meet.

The team of inspectors will be made up of staff from other hospitals around the country, representing a range of disciplines and specialists.

Red flags to enhance patient safety A new system that encourages staff to raise concerns about ward staffing levels as early as possible has launched across the Trust.

The Red Flag procedure encourages all staff members to raise concerns as soon as they think it could impact on the safe delivery of care.

While staffing levels across the Trust are closely managed to ensure patients continue to receive the highest standards of care, situations will arise where additional support will be needed.

As soon as concerns are raised, Royal staff should bleep 5236 while Broadgreen staff should bleep 5242.

Jenny Taylor, head of patient experience, said: “Appropriate staffing levels on wards help to ensure patients receive the nursing the care they need. Red Flag events are situations where staff have concerns about staffing levels affecting patients care due to certain events. To ensure that we still meet the individual care needs of our patients, it’s important that we recognise what these situations are and act quickly.”

A list of the most common nursing Red Flag event is available on the Trust’s Safe Staffing policy on the intranet.

Everton and Liverpool spread festive cheer Staff and patients at the Royal were received visits from some familiar faces during December.

The LFC Foundation also visited the hospital and brought along the famous European Cup.

Everton Football Club legends Graeme Sharp, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart visited the Royal’s stroke rehabilitation ward to spread some festive cheer to patients and staff.

LFC Foundation representatives also led a sing along of classic scouse songs and showed off some of their football skills to keep everybody entertained.

The trio chatted with patients, staff and family members, as well as handing out some special gifts from the club.

New menu gives patients a taste of the Far East!

Staff, patients and visitors were given the opportunity to sample some new Oriental dishes available to patients during a tasting session in the Royal main entrance.

Patients now have a wide range of Chinese, Thai and Malaysian meals to choose from – just in time for Chinese New Year.

The new Oriental range has been put together following close collaboration with the Trust, ISS and members of the Liverpool Chinese community. Patients can choose from popular Chinese dishes like sweet and sour pork, Chinese chicken and beef curries, king prawn chilli with garlic and kung-po chicken, as well as Thai style green and red curries, Malaysian chicken curry and beef rendang, with a choice of noodles and rice.

The Oriental menu is part of the wider cultural menu available to patients, which includes other foods from around the world featuring halal Indian favourites like beef Madras and vegetable or chicken jalfrezi and a range of meat, fish and vegetarian Kosher meals like beef goulash, roast chicken, sliced lamb, chopped fried fish in tomato sauce and spaghetti Neapolitan.

Joyce Johnson, quality matron, said: “We are a huge Trust in the centre of a multi-cultural city, so it’s important we provide communities with a wider choice of meals during their stay in our hospitals.”

Patients now have a wide range of Chinese, Thai and Malaysian meals to choose from Meals use authentic recipes developed to use no added oil, artificial additives, ingredients and colourants, as well as having reduced salt.

“It’s important that we provide a wide selection of food to our patients, whilst making sure the food we provide is nutritional for patients.

Sarah Turner, ISS head of catering said: “The new menu aims to conjure up fond memories of favourite takeaway meals, but in a nutritionally balanced way.

“Our new menu should give patients much more choice at mealtimes and provide them with a great selection of meals, sides and snacks.”

An Ideal Week for surgery The Trust’s Surgery teams recently took part in a project to improve patient flow across the Trust as it looks ahead to moving into the new Royal in 2017.

Operation Ideal Week emphasised the importance of placing the right patient in the right bed on admission and ensuring patients are discharged before midday where possible.

99% of patients were reviewed by a consultant or senior practitioner before 12pm.

The electronic whiteboards, which allows patients to be allocated to beds, and track patient locations more closely was at the centre of Ideal Week.

The work was carried out in preparation for moving into the new 646-bed hospital.

Teresa Keyes, divisional manager for surgery, said: “Operation Ideal Week is all about improving patient’s access to beds, getting

them home when it’s suitable and improving overall patient experience.

“We are moving into a hospital which has fewer beds so it’s important that we’re ready for that and have the capabilities to improve patient flow where we can.”

Coaching on the up across the Trust Coaching within the Trust is continuing to grow as more members of staff complete their training.

The Trust aims to support staff from all levels to feel confident and able to have coaching conversations with colleagues in their workplace as part of their day-today activities.

So far 78 team leaders have either completed their ‘Anytime Coach –Leader as Coach’ training and achieved their EMCC Foundation level Award in coaching or are on course to complete it early this year.

15 senior leaders are in the process of completing their post-graduate certificate in Business and Executive Coaching, while the executive team are also being supported to develop through bespoke one-to-one and team coaching sessions.

Kate Clark, emergency floor consultant, is one member of staff who has benefited from coaching.

Kate said: “I’m a strong advocate of coaching, it enabled me to see how my

Considering challenges and how to address them allowed me to explore a variety of methods and identify different ways to address issues.

become a more effective leader, more confident in standing up and addressing issues irrespective of personal outcomes and more able to communicate my thoughts and engage with others.”

A leadership network conference, regular coach network events and further training are planned for 2016/17.

From Liverpool to Passo Fundo Professor Azzam Taktak was a special guest at the University of Passo Fundo in Brazil to talk to students about improving the electrical safety of medical devices.

The visit was part of a Brazilian Government scholarship programme called Science without Borders which aims to send Brazilian students on science, technology, engineering and mathematic undergraduate and PhD courses at the world’s top universities.

The relationship between the Trust and the University of Liverpool and the University of Passo Fundo was formed when Science

without Borders contacted Professor Taktak following publication of his work.

Following a tour of the Royal and the University of Liverpool, professor Taktak was invited to Passo Fundo in southern Brazil.

Since Azzam’s visit to the Brazilian university, plans are now in place for a student from the university to complete a PhD in Electrical Safety of Medical Equipment at the University of Liverpool.

Professor Azzam Taktak, consultant clinical scientist at the Royal, said: “It was fantastic to have the opportunity to travel to Brazil and talk to students, staff and professionals.

“To be able to encourage students from the other side of the world to come to Liverpool to study is incredibly exciting.

Building connections like this will enable us to constantly develop technologies that will help our patients.

Professor Taktak was invited to Brazil to speak about the electrical safety of medical equipment

Professor Marcelo Trindade Rebonatto, Head of Biomedical Engineering Group at the University of Passo Fundo, added: “The presence of foreign researchers at our University enriches the curriculum of undergraduate students and also helps to create opportunities for our students at universities around the world.”

Margaret Maddrell won the iPad mini after completing the 2015 NHS Staff Survey

NHS Staff Survey 2015 Congratulations to Margaret Maddrell who won the iPad mini after completing the 2015 NHS Staff Survey.

The iPad mini was one of a number of prizes on offer to lucky members of staff who shared their views on what it is like to work at the Trust.

Data from the 2015 survey will be published in February. The Trust will then develop an action plan to address the issues raised by staff as well as celebrating good practice.

Other prizes included two extra days of annual leave and ten £100 Liverpool One vouchers.

Unsung hero: Learning Disability team Learning Disabilities lead nurse Sue Hancox spoke to us about her important role to protect some of our most vulnerable patients as part of our Unsung Hero series.

The Learning Disabilities team focus on making sure patients with learning disabilities are given the best and most appropriate care and attention.

To do this, they provide training to staff to help them understand how to care for Learning Disability patients in the correct way, considering possible reasonable adjustments, to ensure best and most appropriate care.

25-40% of patients with learning disabilities suffer mental health problems and between 10-15% of people with learning disabilities have challenging behaviour.

A learning disability can affect a person in a range of situations, causing problems with things like social skills, managing

money and learning new skills, therefore it is essential that care is planned and explained appropriately.

Sue said: “Patients with learning disabilities include people with Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, global development delay, autism, Asperger syndrome or fragile X syndrome.

“Learning disability patients can require different care to suit their needs and it’s up to us to make sure staff know how to do this.”

When a patient is admitted to hospital, a health passport is completed by a member of staff, family member or carer who knows the individual. This passport provides information about the patient beyond their medical care.

Sue said: “The passport holds information that gives staff an idea of the whole person. We can include information on their favourite food, drink and their main

“Knowing more about a patient means we can make reasonable adjustments to ensure our patients receive the best and most suitable care for them.”

Our amazing award winners BBC North West Tonight Christmas Star Sarah Massey, Sarcoma Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Royal, was awarded a Christmas Star by BBC North West Tonight.

The award was presented to Sarah to thank her for her unfailing kindness and support at a time when patients are feeling most vulnerable and afraid.

HSJ Award win for C&M Rehab Network The Cheshire and Merseyside Rehab Network – which we are a part of – won the Specialised Services Redesign Award at the 2015 HSJ Awards.

The winners of the 2015 HSJ Awards were announced on 18 November at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Beacon of Hope Award Homology nurse practitioner Linda Boyne (left) was honoured by the Lymphoma Association for her outstanding support of lymphatic cancer patients.

ISS World Cup ISS UK & Ireland, which provides services across the Trust, was crowned ISS 2015 World Champions.

NHS North West Leadership Recognition Awards Dr Paul Richardson was awarded NHS Development Champion of the Year while Dr Paul Fitzsimmons came runner up in the NHS Outstanding Collaborative Leader of the Year at the NHS North West Leadership Recognition Awards. Professor Arpan Guha won NHS Leadership Award 2015 as Mentor/Coach of the Year in the Northwest.

Congratulations to all three and well done for all their hard work.

Merseycare Positive Achievement Awards 2015 The Integrated Frailty Team, based at the Royal, won the annual positive achievement award for ‘Improving the Service User Experience’.

The team aims to assess and discharge people within 72 hours and visit them within five days, helping them get back to their life at home.

Some of the fun ways to can stay active include the ‘How Far Can You Go Challenge’ where staff are encouraged to set a walking distance target for the month and to record their progress using pedometers.

Trust education facilitator appointed co-chair of regional network Noeleen Ryan, one of the Trust’s Practice Education Facilitators, has been appointed co-chair of the Merseyside and Cheshire PEF Network.

January 2016, said: “The main focus of a PEF is to assist in maintaining the quality of the practice learning environment. We do this by providing advice and guidance, offering opportunities for staff to access yearly mentor and educator updates and supporting the educator at times when a student may be struggling to achieve their learning outcomes.

As co-chair, Noeleen will link together practice education facilitators and stakeholders from local universities and Health Education Northwest, share best practice and represent the network at local and national strategic education meetings.

A practice education facilitator (PEF) is a qualified healthcare professional clinical experience who works closely with practice placements teams and universities to provide practice education.

Improving the quality of life for our patients

Graham and Catherine married 15 months after Graham was diagnosed with TTP and given a 10% chance of survival

Life-saving treatment gives couple their dream day A newly-wed has thanked staff at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital for making her dream day a reality after her husband defied all odds by surviving a rare, life-threatening blood disorder.

56-year-old Catherine Fletcher married 60-year-old Graham Stansfield – 15 months after Graham was diagnosed with TTP and given a 10% chance of survival.

TTP, or Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, is a rare disease that affects around six to eight people per million per year. The condition affects blood circulation, whereby little clots form in blood vessels throughout the body.

This can limit the flow of oxygen to vital organs such as the brain, kidneys and heart, causing organ failure, brain damage and stroke.

Because the disease is so rare it can sometimes be misdiagnosed and failure to treat the problem can be devastating.

Without treatment, TTP has a 90-95% mortality rate.

One evening Graham, a former bricklayer, started to feel extremely tired and unwell after finishing work.

Following a visit to his local GP, he was admitted to Blackburn General Hospital, where consultants started to suspect he might have the disease.

As one of only two official specialist TTP centres in the UK, Graham was rushed to the Royal where a dedicated TTP team were ready and waiting for his arrival.

Consultant and TTP Specialist Centre lead, Dr Tina Dutt was one of the team waiting for Graham.

Graham’s now wife Catherine said: “When Graham arrived he was very distressed. He deteriorated very quickly and we had to inform his partner Catherine of how serious his condition was. There is very little awareness of TTP, but it is vital that the disorder is treated urgently.”

“He had two cardiac arrests during the first 48 hours of treatment – if he’d have had a third he probably wouldn’t have left the hospital alive.”

To treat the disorder, Graham underwent plasma exchange regularly daily during his time in hospital. Plasma exchange is a procedure that removes and then replaces plasma in the blood with new plasma and greatly improves the chances of survival following a TTP attack.

Dr Dutt said: “Despite treatment Graham’s condition failed to improve. He spent a significant time in Intensive Care and we used a drug treatment only a handful of people in the UK have received. This treatment meant Graham was finally allowed to leave the hospital.

Following lengthy treatment, Graham left the Royal twelve weeks after he was first admitted. As a side effect of the disorder, Graham is now partially sighted and partially deaf, as well as requiring follow up with the Stroke Consultant for long-term neuropsychological effects.

Graham now visits the Royal on an almost weekly basis and the couple regularly find time to go and see the staff from the TTP centre.

The couple are even looking at moving to Liverpool to be closer to the Royal.

Catherine said: “We visit Tina, TTP specialist nurse Clare Kay-Jones and the rest of the TTP team roughly once a month, but someone is always around if we need them, whether that’s a five minute chat between clinic appointments or a phone call if we’re ever worried about anything.

“I don’t see them as a group of people who care for Graham anymore as they’re more like friends now. We even received a card on our wedding day signed by the staff, which was so thoughtful.”

“We see him as a miracle patient and I’m very proud of the work the TTP team’s commitment and the couple’s resilience over the past 18 months.”

Catherine and Graham married in a registry office close to their home in Burnley, on Monday 3 August, which was also Graham’s 60th birthday. Catherine said: “It was a small service, with a few close friends and family.

It still wasn’t clear whether the TTP had affected Graham’s kidney, heart and brain function, but the Catherine and the specialist team remained positive.

“We didn’t want anything big, but if it wasn’t for the treatment Graham received last year, I don’t think we’d would both be here to celebrate at all.“

Improving the quality of life for our patients

Hybrid theatre opens at the Royal A state-of-the-art operating theatre which performs life-saving vascular procedures using enhanced imaging has opened at the Royal.

The £3.7million theatre gives surgeons access to ultra-high definition x-rays during surgery.

The new equipment provides a 3D map of the patient’s arteries, enabling complex, minimally invasive surgery to be carried out on serious conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).

The technology gives high quality visuals producing less fatigue for the operating team and uses lower doses of radiation and contrast material, making it safer for patients and staff.

Professor Rao Vallabhaneni said: “The new hybrid theatre is one the most modern of medical environments. With this we will stay at the forefront of vascular surgery and can

continue to offer our patients some of the most advanced treatments with the best in safety and accuracy.”

“Building a temporary structure for a state-ofthe-art facility that can be transferred to our other site was challenging. This shows that while we invest in the future of healthcare with the new Royal, we remain committed to excellence in today’s healthcare too.”

The vascular theatre has been built on a platform level on the second floor of the Royal above outpatients. When the new Royal opens in 2017 the innovative technology will be transferred to the new hospital while the structure which houses it will be transferred to Broadgreen to provide an extra operating theatre for the Dental and Surgical Specialties.

The operating suite uses an electronic arm – known as a ‘C arm’ - which is controlled to move in tandem with a carbon-fibre operating table and provides ultra-clear images to guide the surgeon through the complex network of arteries.

Passionate Paul encourages over 4000 people to sign the Organ Donor Register An organ donor who donated a kidney to a woman he didn’t know has encouraged thousands of others to sign up to the Organ Donor Register.

In the UK it is estimated that three people a day die waiting for a transplant and in 2014/15 the number of donors in the UK fell for the first time in nine years.

67-year-old Paul Dixon started volunteering his time in the Trust in January 2015 to do his bit in improving awareness of the need for organ donors in the UK.

We carry out around 100 kidney transplants each year treating patients across the North West.

By 31 December Paul managed to sign up 4,076 people to the Organ Donor Register.

Paul said: “I set myself a target of signing 4,000 people up to the register. It was touch and go for a few weeks, but I managed to get there in the end!

“It’s unbelievable how much of a difference donating your organs can make.

“One person’s organs or tissue can potentially save or change the lives of 10 people, so signing up could help so many people.

One obstacle with donating organs is a person’s family may not know of their wish to donate after death.

Since 2010 an estimated 1,200 people have missed out on potentially life-saving treatment because families refused to donate organs, even though their relative was on the Organ Donor Register.

Paul said: “It’s a difficult subject to talk about, but it’s really important to have these conversations with your loved ones.

“Some people can feel uncomfortable when I talk to them about organ donation and it’s understandable, but for somebody on the transplant waiting list that conversation could be the difference between life and death.”

So in February Aidan helped serve dishes of scouse to diners at the Royal’s cafeteria for Scouse at R House – the R Charity February challenge to serve up great scouse all over the city - before putting their backs into the Dragon Boat Race.

Scouse at R house Calling all great cooks! Get three scousers in a room talking about how to make the city’s most famous dish – scouse – and the debate rolls on.

Scouse has been cooked up in the city for centuries, but there are still almost as many ways to make the classic dish of meat and spuds as there are people in the city.

So that’s why the challenge in February is to make the best scouse ever, and share it with neighbours and friends – and all in the name of charity. R Charity is launching “Scouse at R House” in a bid to find the best scouse around.

Top chefs from the Albert Dock to Hope Street are chipping in with their very best scouse recipes for diners to sample and home cooks to try, all for a donation to R Charity which is now official partner to Global Scouse Day. Kicking off the campaign, on 1 February, our catering team ISS attempted a world record to create the biggest ever batch of scouse in the Royal’s restaurant.

BBC Radio Merseyside’s Tony Snell will be offering a great “scouse nous” quiz to all our scouse party hosts.

Exceptional patient experience

Thank you to our staff Royal Liverpool University Hospital Yesterday I was taken into hospital. It was quite swift passing through triage. I was impressed by the efficiency, friendliness, humour and professionalism of all who treated me - I reckon it was at least five nurses/doctor who attended to me in the two hours it took to diagnose my ailment. I was subject to a raft of necessary tests and feel I received the best possible treatment but in the most efficient and friendliest way. Thank you.

Dental Hospital Having being referred to the hospital due to a failed extraction I was very anxious.

Every single member of staff are to be highly praised, they made me feel very calm, talking to me making sure I was ok with everything. I can’t express in words how brilliantly the hospital is, it makes you realise what would we do without our NHS. Thank you all.

Broadgreen Hospital I went in for an operation on Monday 14th December 2015 in the morning at 07.30 and was operated on at 09.20. The staff were lovely, all the pre op work was efficient and timely and everything was under control.

Before the op I saw the nurses, the consultant, their junior and the anaesthetic team. The recovery team were great and I was drinking tea and eating toast by 12.00. I understand that some parts of the NHS may struggle at times but Broadgreen is excellent.

Thanks to everyone from the person at the front desk right back to the consultant.
