The 2012 BIG EAST women’s lacrosse championship is a fourteam single-elimination tournament. The top four teams, seeded according to Conference game winning percentage, qualify for the championship. Syracuse University located in Syracuse, N.Y., will serve as host for the championship. It will be the sixth BIG EAST women’s lacrosse championship, and the second time it has been held at the Carrier Dome. In addition, it is the third year all three games of the BIG EAST Championship will be televised live on national television. The CBS Sports Network will broadcast both semifinals live on May 3, while the title game is set for May 5.

The BIG EAST Conference and XOS Digital, Inc., a leader in digital sports media, jointly announced a new partnership on July 1, 2010 resulting in an overhaul to the conference’s official website www. bigeast.org. The BIG EAST Conference’s re-launched site resides on a robust content management system that allows the site to be completely customized on the fly. The new site features a cutting-edge online video platform, a sleek new design, simplified navigation and a newly developed conference-wide regular season and postseason live statistics platform. The conference’s online video platform will retain its BIGEAST.tv branding, with fans driven to that URL to consume all of the conference’s live online and on-demand video offerings. Those offerings will now include new on-demand programming in the form of webisodes and vignettes produced in XOS Digital’s production facility. BIGEAST.tv also will feature highlights of every nationally televised BIG EAST contest posted following the conclusion of every game and other on-demand interviews and features. In addition, fans can access BIGEAST.tv for live streaming of certain conference championships, which will be offered free-to-consumers.

Five Named To Inside Lacrosse Preseason AllAmerica List – Five BIG EAST players were named to the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America team, including BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Ana Heneberry. The senior was picked to the publication’s Second Team. Notre Dame’s Maggie Tamasitis received Third Team preaseason All-America honors, along with Syracuse junior Michelle Tumolo. Georgetown senior Kelly Barnes and junior teammate Sophia Thomas were both named to the Third Team as well. IMPRESSIVE FRESHMEN AT GEORGETOWN – For the second straight year, Georgetown will bring a top-5 recuriting class to the Hilltop. GU’s freshman class was ranked fifth in the nation by Inside Lacrosse magazine and first among all BIG EAST schools. Georgetown also had three players named in the Top 25 Rising Freshmen article and two on the 2011 Watch List.

WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE – There are two new head coaches in the BIG EAST this season. Notre Dame welcomed Christine Halfpenny, while Villanova brought Julie Young on board. Both have multiple years of head coaching experience.

Last year Georgetown had top recruiting class in the country according to rankings released by Inside Lacrosse magazine. The Hoyas also had four players named among the top 25 incoming freshmen in the country including the top recruit Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor).

Halfpenny comes to the Irish from the College of William & Mary. She spent five years there and most recently won back-to-back CAA regular-season championships. Young spent three years at Haverford where she compiled a record of 33-18.

RISING TO THE TOP – The league has eight underclassmen on its 16-player Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, including Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Michelle Tumolo. A junior from Syracuse, she is one of five juniors on the squad. There also are three sophomores. Last year, 14 of the 16 Preseason All-BIG EAST selections were seniors. She also amassed 24 draw controls and was just the second sophomore in league history to earn conference Midfielder of the Year honors. MARQUETTE ON THE HORIZON – On Dec. 16, 2010, Marquette University announced it would add men’s and women’s lacrosse which will begin competition in the spring of 2013. The Golden Eagles will play as an independent their first season, before becoming a full member of the BIG EAST in 2014. On Feb. 14, 2011, Marquette announced the hiring of Meredith Simon Black (Notre Dame ‘04) as its first women’s lacrosse head coach. She joins the Golden Eagles after spending the 2011 season at Cal. Previously she served as an assistant coach at Towson from 2004-2010.

GEORGETOWN SELECTED TO WIN BIG EAST WOMEN’S LACROSSE CROWN -Syracuse ranked one point behind.-

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the third consecutive year, the BIG EAST women’s lacrosse coaches have selected Georgetown as the favorite in the league’s preseason poll. The Hoyas totaled 60 points, including five first-place votes, and were narrowly picked ahead of Syracuse (59 points), which had three first-place selections. Loyola landed third with 51 points, including one first-place vote. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. Syracuse junior Michelle Tumolo was tabbed as the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and was one of nine unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST honorees. She totaled 63 points last season on 30 goals and 33 assists. Loyola senior Ana Heneberry was picked as the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. A third-team All-American in 2011, Heneberry anchored a Loyola defense that finished the year ranked 12th in the NCAA by allowing just 8.85 goals per game. Georgetown returns six starters and 23 letterwinners to a squad that won the 2011 BIG EAST regular-season crown and earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas went 9-8 last season, including 7-1 in BIG EAST play. Kelsi Bozel and Sophia Thomas, both midfielders, were unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST picks for the Hoyas. Senior Kelly Barnes will anchor the Georgetown defense this year, while junior Dina Jackson will lead the attack. Each player was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. Syracuse, which has advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in two of the last four years under the direction of head coach Gary Gait, was picked second. Notre Dame begins the year under the direction of first-year head coach Christine Halfpenny, who joined the Irish after five years as the head coach at William & Mary. Senior attack Maggie Tamasitis should lead the offense after totaling 67 points last season. The unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection had a league-leading 46 assists and 21 goals. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Brosco also was selected for the league’s preseason squad. Last year Notre Dame (10-9, 6-2 BIG EAST) advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Championship. Rutgers was picked fifth and will look to senior Ali Steinberg to lead the team. A unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Steinberg had 35 points, including 28 goals last year. The Scarlet Knights were 9-7 last season, 3-5 in BIG EAST play. Connecticut (9-7, 3-5 BIG EAST) landed in sixth-place and will look to senior attack M.E. Lapham to lead the offense. A unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Lapham totaled 63 points, including 55 goals last year. She is the league’s top returning scorer. Louisville, Cincinnati and Villanova round out the poll. Villanova senior Justine Donodeo is a Preseason All-BIG EAST pick after totaling 51 points, including 39 goals last season. The Wildcats are under the direction of first-year head coach Julie Young. She spent the past three seasons as head coach at Haverford College.

• Cincinnati returns its all-time leading scorer in senior midfielder Laura Simanski. She has scored a program-best 125 points and 115 goals in her career. After starting all 15 games, Simanski led the Bearcats in 2011 with 22 goals, including a 11 free position goals. • UC returns five of its top six scorers. • With the departure of 13 letterwinners from 2011, the returning Cardinals account for only 17 percent of last year’s goals (41-out-of-241 goals). Among those lost were All-American and all-region honoree, Bergan Foley. • The top-returning goal scorer is Katie Oliverio, who earned second team IWLCA allWest/Midwest Region accolades. An All-BIG EAST selection, she scored 21 goals, earned 43 assists – the total ranked fifth nationally – and collected 26 ground balls in 2011. Oliverio ranked first in the BIG EAST in assists per game (2.53) and fifth in points per contest (3.76). • Louisville boasted a 3-1 home record in conference play and was 7-3 overall at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium last year.

• Head coach Jen Adams – the 2011 BIG EAST Co-Coach of the Year and IWLCA MidAtlantic Region Coach of the Year – returns for her fourth year at the helm of the program, sporting an overall 39-16 record. • Loyola returns seven starters from its BIG EAST Championship squad, including four All-BIG EAST honorees. • The Greyhounds climbed to as high as No. 3 in the national rankings last year and finished the season with their best BIG EAST record in program history (6-2). • Loyola earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and made its first appearance in the tournament since 2004 and the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2003.

• Christine Halfpenny becomes Notre Dame’s second head coach since women’s lacrosse gained varsity status in 1997. She comes to the Irish after spending five seasons in charge of the William & Mary program, finishing with four straight 10-win season and back-to-back CAA regular season championships in ’08 and ’09. • The Irish look to rely on goaltending in the upcoming campaign, as junior Ellie Hilling returns to man the cage for the third consecutive season. Over her first two seasons, Hilling has started each of the 37 contests the Irish have played, recording 21 wins in the process. She also has recorded 262 saves in that span. • Senior attacker Maggie Tamasitis was named a Preseason Third Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse. She is only 15 assists away from the school record.

• Rutgers returns 49-percent of its offense from a season ago, including senior midfielder and captain Ali Steinberg, who controlled a team-best 37 draw controls last season. • The returning defense, which welcomes back three of its four starters, will be led by team co-captain Rebecca Alley and junior goalie Lily Kalata. The RU backfield returns 77 and 73 percent of its groundball and caused turnover production, respectively. • The RU defense ranked 15th in the country last season in scoring defense (9.19), led by Kalata who gave up just 8.77 goals per game – best in the BIG EAST. • Head coach Laura Brand-Sias received a three-year extension on her contract. • RU welcomes six newcomers to the team this fall – three midfielders, a defender, an attack and a goalkeeper.

• Junior Michelle Tumolo returns after leading Syracuse in scoring last season with 63 points. She also led the squad with 33 assists, which is the highest single-season total by a sophomore in school history. Tumolo was selected to the 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team. • Overall, Syracuse returns four of its top five scorers from last season. Sophomore Katie Webster was voted to the All-BIG EAST First Team after tying for second on the team with 32 goals and finishing the year with 39 points. • The Orange defense features several experienced players. Junior Becca Block earned second team All-BIG EAST honors last season. She ranked second on the team in draw controls (28) and tied for second in caused turnovers (nine). • Syracuse must find a replacement for Liz Hogan at goalkeeper. The four-year starter earned All-America honors and owns the school record for career saves.

• A a new era begins at Villanova, with the addition of first-year head coach Julie Young. • The Wildcats return senior midfield Justine Donodeo who will lead the Villanova attack. Donodeo was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection last season. She led the squad with 51 points, 39 goals and 12 assists. Villanova returns six of its seven top scorers. • Leadership will come from captains Justine Donodeo, Shawna Giust, Annie Fallon and Mary Liva. • Villanova will have the luxury of experience between the pipes as junior Amanda Hirschfeld and sophomore Julia Todd return as goalkeepers. The duo split time last year each seeing action in 12 games. Hirschfeld had a 13.52 goals-against average, while Todd had a 9.89 figure.
