PROUDLY SERVING BIGHORN

A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR 20 +years

The most important job of any successful leader is to build and sustain a great team. When R.D. Hubbard and the group of Member investors took control of BIGHORN in 1996, most people couldn’t foresee what it would one day become – a thriving, innovative, and extraordinary Club with championship golf, a world-class Spa & Wellness Center, award-winning properties, and a roster of Members that rivals the Fortune Global 500.

And while Mr. Hubbard is credited for developing barren desert land into one of the most enviable clubs in the world, he is quick to assert that, “The right people are

what really make it a success.” The team that works every day to make BIGHORN so special is a loyal group of more than 300 people who happily work as a family to support Mr. Hubbard’s imaginative vision. No matter their title or duties, BIGHORN employees share one very important quality – they have mastered the art of excellent service and anticipating the needs of Members.

In an environment as extraordinary as BIGHORN, it’s not surprising that people want to be a part of the team. What is astonishing, however, is that so many have chosen to make it their life’s work. Nearly 50 BIGHORN employees have been a part of the team for 20 years or more.

Feeling like part of a caring family is key to employee longevity and happiness, according to BIGHORN’s Human Resources Director Patti Babrowski, who stresses that BIGHORN is devoted to going the extra mile for its employees, just as they go the extra mile for the Club.

“Everyone is valued no matter what their title and rank is,” said Babrowski. “We send out birthday cards; flowers when employees are ill; and we visit employees while in the hospital.” She added that BIGHORN has been quick to aid families when they face difficult times or just give gift cards as random acts of kindness.

Jacquie Burns, whose journey at BIGHORN began as a paralegal for Westinghouse in 1993, was given the opportunity a few years later to move from the legal department into real estate sales. She recalls Mr. Hubbard’s comment at the time she was making the transition, “He said to me, ‘I don’t have any reason to believe you can do this, but I don’t have any reason to believe you can’t.’”

Now many years later she is a part of a very successful team that has sold over $2.5 billion in real estate at BIGHORN. I am grateful every day for the privilege to represent BIGHORN and work with such an amazing group of people. I am inspired daily. You can make a list a mile long of what makes BIGHORN unique –the property setting, the gorgeous homes, the amenities, the guest services, etc. but the one thing that truly sets us apart from everyone else is the people who live and work here.”

Among all the employee benefits that BIGHORN offers, the Scholarship/Tuition Assistance Program has had one of the greatest impacts among the employees and the quality of life of their families. For Francisco Jara, a Golf Cart Mechanic since 1994, the financial support has enabled his oldest son Ivan, to attend Harvard University this fall as the first member of his family to go to college. Jara feels BIGHORN has really shaped him in his 25 years of employment.

“Being a part of this family has brought out my full potential, to be the best that I can be,” stated Jara, “and now my son is on the way to being the best he can be.”

Sue Babington, who has worked at BIGHORN since 1991, agrees with Jara’s sentiments.

“To be part of this team has been the biggest blessing of my life. BIGHORN has always been there for me and my daughter, Amber, who was only 18 months old when I started here. Because of the scholarship program, she was able to graduate recently as a Registered Nurse.”

20 MEET THE FAMILY

In addition to BIGHORN’s generosity, “Building BIGHORN as part of the Planning and Development Department with Carl Cardinalli and meeting my husband have been equally amazing,” revealed Babington. And she isn’t alone—there are numerous employees who have met their spouses at the Club.

One of those who met her spouse at work is BIGHORN Properties Broker Associate Lorna Ball. After 29 years at the same position, she is proud to be a part of the amazing real estate team, “We all work together every day and still truly enjoy it. It’s not a job, it’s an adventure.” And how does she stay inspired after all those years? “The next person who calls or walks in our door is my motivation. You are only as good as your next performance,” she often quotes. “When I think of BIGHORN, I think of Mr. Hubbard. He’s bigger than life with his vision and selfless dedication to this community. I am so grateful for him and my entire ‘work’ family.”

“The best move I ever made in my life was accepting a position at BIGHORN 22 years ago,” shared Chito Valasquez, Golf Course Manager. “I was so in awe with the beautiful surroundings, but even more so with the people who work here.” Longtime banquet server Arturo Perez agrees that the staff is more like family, but for Perez, BIGHORN really is family with eight close relatives all employed by the Club.

One particular employee memory stands out for General Manager Tony Ogrodnick. “We had a long-time employee who had worked in the Maintenance Department who passed away,” said Ogrondnick. “His family told us his last request was to be buried in a brand-new BIGHORN golf shirt. We not only gave them a shirt, we also dedicated a special plaque to him on property with an all-employee toast in his honor. It was truly touching. There’s a culture here that makes BIGHORN a very special place.”

SUPER blooms

DISCOVER NATURE’S BEAUTY IN EVERY SEASON

Although “Super Bloom” may not be a particularly scientific term, it is a perfect way to describe that very rare occurrence when the delicate balance of rain and sun come together at the ideal time to blanket the hillsides. Deserts and surprising nooks of natural beauty surround us all in brilliant displays of magenta, orange and bright yellow.

Last spring, both the natural flora and meticulously planted desert scape of BIGHORN came alive with a spectacular show of nature’s majesty—and Super Bloom or not—each season promises to inspire with dazzling pops of wildflowers that splash across the surrounding hills and envelop the entire property in a wash of color.

This precious rite of spring inspires festivals, runs, bicycle rides and hikes that pay homage to the delicate blossoms. In the early spring, Palm Desert’s annual “Wildflower Festival” salutes the blooms in a picturesque setting with guided hikes, nature displays and more at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, located near BIGHORN.

NATURE’S GLORY

However, springtime is not the only season where the desert’s natural allure beckons. A bounty of hiking trails promise awe-inspiring scenic beauty in every season, and two of the area’s most popular trails are accessible close to the Club: the Art Smith Trail and the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, which happily intersect for those wanting an extra dose of wonder.

The Art Smith Trail, running 8 miles round-trip, gifts hikers with Instagram-worthy panoramic vistas of the Coachella Valley, as well as the opportunity to spot rare bighorn sheep. Crisscrossing the Art Smith Trail is the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, named after the famed television cowboy. The path begins with a meadow trek to the trailhead that soon ascends past boulders in shades of red and crimson.

Visit our concierge desk for more information about hikes, biking trails and nearby nature programs. They can give you insight into special events happening throughout the year including family-friendly “Star Parties” and “Desert after Dark.”

Whatever activities take you to the scenic outdoors, make sure to soak in the rich natural splendor of the desert and let the exquisite colors of the Coachella Valley be your guide all year long.

& excellence COMPASSION

One could easily say the most successful and fulfilling relationships grow and thrive when they are built upon a foundation of shared philosophies and goals. Add the powerful element of passion for reaching these goals and that partnership is unstoppable.

In the Coachella Valley, a prime example of such a powerful force is the relationship between BIGHORN Golf Club and Eisenhower Health. This partnership is cultivated on decades of shared passion for giving back to the community while, at the same time, seeking an incomparable level of excellence in health care for all.

As the Valley’s only not-for-profit health system, Eisenhower Health has provided high quality, compassionate care for nearly 50 years, buoyed on the significant financial support provided by a broad base of generous donors with BIGHORN at the forefront. “BIGHORN Members’ philanthropic spirit is tremendous” said Laura Fritz, Senior Vice President of the Eisenhower Health Foundation. “Eisenhower has been the largest beneficiary of their generous commitment to the community.”

Philanthropy and volunteerism play a major role in Eisenhower’s ability to fulfill its mission of serving the changing health care needs of the region by providing excellence in patient care with supportive education and research. According to Fritz, Eisenhower—which just received Medicare’s 5-star rating for 2019— relies heavily on philanthropy. “It was this culture of philanthropy that brought me here from Cleveland Clinic five years ago,” she added, “along with Eisenhower’s longevity of leadership and high-end patient service.” It is this same philosophy of charity and reach for excellence that has impassioned BIGHORN members to play an important part in Eisenhower’s mission. “Nothing compares to BIGHORN,” says BIGHORN Member/ resident Robin Stonehill, who moved to the Club in 1997 as one of the Club’s first 100 members. “We have a great relationship with Eisenhower because our members believe in charitable giving, which they demonstrate by their involvement with BIGHORN Golf Club Charities, programs such as BIGHORN BAM, BIGHORN Cares, and BIGHORN Scholarships Program.”

GIVING 24/7

According to Fritz, BIGHORN Members have donated to the health system since the Club’s

inception, collectively gifting more than $56 million to Eisenhower over the years. “The 24/7 Recognition program embraced by BIGHORN’s Members is philanthropy at work,” explained Fritz. “Our CEO Aubrey Serfling designed the program as a way to say ‘thank you’ to our benefactors by providing valuable, time-saving services, while ensuring funds are there to establish the best facilities and best equipment to attract top-rated doctors. All of the money given to us by BIGHORN Members not only benefits the Members, but also benefits the entire community.”

Services provided by a Member’s promise of a $250,000 donation over a five-year period are many, but Fritz explains most of the benefits come down to saving valuable time and easing the stress that is often a part of complicated medical care. “There is a dedicated 24/7 staff of nurses who serves the Member’s needs—almost like personal assistants--doing such things as making appointments with specialists, coordinating all notes from doctors, preadmittance for surgeries, coordinating with doctors out of the area, staying in touch with family members and answering concerns around the clock,” said Fritz. “However, it is not just our 24/7 members who are rewarded. The entire community benefits from the same top doctors and state-of-the-art equipment that

are the result of donations through 24/7.”

Not only does the community benefit from 24/7 donors, but also the growing population that has made the valley their “medical home,” according to Fritz. A perfect example of that is Robin Stonehill and wife, Carlyn, who have been married for 60 years and, until recently, divided their time between a sprawling estate in Williamsburg, Virginia and BIGHORN. According to Stonehill, being a member of 24/7 has been life changing. “After 20 years, we now live here (BIGHORN) full time, largely because of the program,” said Stonehill. “We are what I like to call ‘aging in place,’ and what could be a better place to do this? We have all we need here, including immediate, top health care.”

A retired specialist on the New York Stock Exchange, Stonehill spent years in the intense career of matching stock buyers with sellers for 6 ½ hours a day, but these days, he applies his acute ability to focus not only on his golf game but also as an unofficial “recruiter” for Eisenhower’s 24/7 program, having convinced around a dozen Members to join.

“I keep 24/7 packets in the back of my golf cart for my afternoon trips to the dog park,” explained Stonehill, who also serves on the Eisenhower Health Foundation Board of Governors. “The dog park is a melting pot of golfers, bridge players, tennis players… everyone there wants to talk about health, so it’s the perfect time to talk about the program and what it has meant to us.”

Cheryl and Murray Hall have lived at BIGHORN since 2004, dividing their time between Palm Desert and Colorado. They joined 24/7 last year and were completely “sold” on the program when Murray suddenly acquired a serious leg infection. “We were met at the door of Emergency by a 24/7 nurse,” recalled Cheryl. “Murray ended up spending five days in the Renker Pavilion; the personalized care and resort feel of the room made it so stress-free for us. 24/7 is absolutely the best decision we have made regarding our medical care. Having the knowledge that, if something goes wrong, we will be very well taken care of is so important to our peace of mind.”

“BIGHORN, with this program and other connections, truly makes life as easy as it can be,” added Hall. “Knowing that we are also giving back to the community by contributing to top medical care for all is a major bonus.”

BIGHORN Members since 2004, Cheryl and Murray Hall recently joined the 24/7 Program.

20-year residents Carlyn & Robin Stonehill now call BIGHORN home year-round largely because of Eisenhower’s 24/7 Program.

NEW

perspective

Member and longtime resident, Terry Weiner, recently purchased Penthouse 302 after years of owning a large home in BIGHORN.

QUESTION: What drew you to this property initially?

ANSWER: First and foremost is the beauty of the design. When I walked in to my BIGHORN Penthouse for the first time, it was love at first sight. I loved the tall ceilings, the attention to detail, and the quality of the construction. This building is built to a far higher standard than typical residential property. For example, most of the walls are concrete which makes it extremely quiet. Plus, I love the privacy.

QUESTION: Is this a private place to live?

ANSWER: Yes. I have always been a very private person, and this BIGHORN Penthouse gives me the highest level of privacy possible. I simply drive into my underground garage and access my private elevator that opens right into my living room. I can come and go and not be seen.

QUESTION: What aspects of Penthouse living appeal to you most?

ANSWER: Last year, I purchased a Penthouse property in Las Vegas and came to realize that lifestyle really suites me. I enjoy being able to lock it and leave it.

This BIGHORN Penthouse gives me unparalleled services, views, and convenience without all the attendant responsibilities of having gardeners and all the things that go with a big home. So for me it is perfect. I enjoy being able to just get in the elevator, go downstairs and have breakfast, read the Wall Street Journal and New York Times . It’s such a convenience. I can enjoy company at the Pour House or entertain in the privacy of my Penthouse with food delivery. It’s also nice to be able to call ahead if I’m not here, and let the concierge know that I have someone coming to the house, and to please let them in. That is a big advantage for me.

Anyone who has ever checked into a five-star hotel, and stayed in a presidential suite will understand – that is how life is here, every day.

QUESTION: How do you use the concierge services that accompany BIGHORN Penthouses?

ANSWER: Over the past 35 years, I traveled for business and had the good fortune to stay in some of the finest hotels around the world. Living here, in a BIGHORN Penthouse makes me feel that I am waking up every day in the presidential suite of a five-star resort. I LOVE it. The services are amazing.

As a BIGHORN Penthouse resident, I have a personal concierge available to help me make any arrangements I may need, as well as order groceries, schedule appointments and arrange car or plane services. It’s all about ease.

One morning, I was having several friends over to play golf. The Pour House brought up coffee, orange juice and pastries for the group. This is actually better than room service because typically, even in a fivestar hotel, if I call room service, I’m lucky to get the food in an hour. Here, it’s up in five minutes. The expediency is nice, and the variety of things they can do in the Pour House is pretty much unlimited.

It’s almost embarrassing how easy it is to live in a Penthouse.

QUESTION: Does your dog like living here?

ANSWER: He loves it. I have a little artificial grass area back by the pool – yes, this Penthouse has a swimming pool upstairs on

the roof. We go down in the elevator, he runs over and jumps into the golf cart, and we’re at the dog park in two minutes. It’s easy for him.

QUESTION: Any parting thoughts?

ANSWER: The views are spectacular. The sunrises and sunsets are magnificent because I look right down the 18th fairway.

I do travel around the world quite a bit, Europe, Asia, South America. There is no place like BIGHORN, and I’m not just saying that because I live here. The level of service, the quality of the events, the amenities.

You can’t truly understand or believe it until you live here. BIGHORN is unlike any place else in the world, and I am so fortunate to call it home.

Every year at BIGHORN, charitable donations of time, talent and money grow exponentially, helping thousands of Coachella Valley residents of all ages. Over the last 20 years, BIGHORN Members have gifted over $155 million to worthy causes and organizations in the Coachella Valley, and around the world.

“BIGHORN Members are true entrepreneurial leaders who recognize the power of philanthropy,” states Kelly Levy, Director of Charities and Marketing at BIGHORN. “From one-time charitable

donations, to sustained philanthropy that endows lasting change, Members are admired in the community for their compassion and generosity. Each individual has the power to bring people together for a common goal. It’s about creating a better future for generations to come. We can change the world together.”

While giving to others in need is heartwarming and essential in our world, the realization that your act of charity has actually changed someone’s life for the better is profound. BIGHORN’s many charitable efforts can be summed up in two words: life changing.

HELPING NONPROFITS THRIVE

BIGHORN Cares is a prime example of the generosity and philanthropic nature of the Club. This nonprofit was created to assist other 501(c)3 organizations by issuing grants for specific projects that benefit the most underserved citizens in the Coachella Valley. In true BIGHORN fashion, this organization is supported by Member contributions, and a partnership with One West Bank, with 100% of the funds passed through to qualified applicants.

Over the past five years, BIGHORN Cares has distributed $2.3 million to 243 projects, benefiting the lives of countless adults, children, and families.

“Each year this program grows, and this was our biggest year yet. To distribute $600,000 to 70 local nonprofits is an amazing accomplishment for a golf club community,” stated Member Joe Kirby, Chairman of BIGHORN Cares. “We are thrilled to be able to make an impact on so many organizations that are doing great work and serving different needs across the Coachella Valley. We couldn’t be more proud of our Members and the community.”

One of the 2018 grant recipients was Father’s Heart Ranch, located on the outskirts of

Desert Hot Springs. The Ranch, a group home for abused and neglected boys, has a mission to receive, restore, and revive children whose lives have been impacted by abuse and neglect. Its goal is to provide skills that each child can take with them on their journey through life. This is accomplished through therapy, community involvement, spiritual development, exposure to new things and above all love.

For the past 13 years, Christina Torres has been the Administrative Director of Father’s Heart Ranch and is grateful to BIGHORN and its Members for their generosity and support of the community. As a four-time recipient of BIGHORN Cares grants, funds have helped build a shaded playground.

“Our nearest park was 20 minutes away,” explained Torres. “Playing is such a huge part of a child’s physical and mental wellbeing, and this new equipment allows the boys to play on-site – to run and play on monkey bars and a swing set.”

In addition to the playground, funds helped to build an onsite splash pad with cooling water for interactive play during hot desert days. BIGHORN Member Dr. Craig Ball, became personally involved and worked

side-by-side with Miguel Gomez and a team of landscapers to install irrigation for not just a raised garden, but also for approximately 80 palm trees and 20 citrus trees that they planted for shade and windbreak to protect the playground.

During a recent BIGHORN Cares Road Trip, Members, including Katy and Bruce Titcomb, recently visited Father’s Heart Ranch.

“We first met the boys in the cafeteria where we broke the ice by drinking root beer floats together,” said Katy. “We then went to several different activity stations, read books and put together jigsaw puzzles… Bruce and I were surprised by how friendly and open the boys were. They were really well behaved, cheerful, and playful; we were sad that they had suffered so much in their young lives. We were also amazed with the dedication of the staff and pleased that BIGHORN Cares is financially supporting this organization.”

“When the kids get one-on-one attention, you see them thriving and enjoying their time,” said Torres. “BIGHORN Cares is a wonderful program and the Members are making a big difference, not just financially, but they invest their time as well, and that is a precious resource.”

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

Many people feel that higher education is priceless, but with the constant rising costs of tuition, earning a degree can be financially difficult. Thanks to a special program implemented by BIGHORN, the cost of education for employees is much less daunting. Through the BIGHORN Scholarship program, more than 600 collegiate and post-graduate grants have been gifted in just 13 years.

Clubhouse Service Manager Rick Neilon’s family is just one of the hundreds of beneficiaries of these scholarships, primarily awarded to BIGHORN employees and their family members.

“The Bighorn Scholarship Program has impacted my entire family with life-changing results,” said Rick. “The scholarships allow my family to concentrate on their studies instead of worrying about the financial burden of rising tuition. With my families’ higher education, they will be able to realize the lifetime goals they have dreamed of.”

and Parks, have all received scholarships to help further their education. Fran recently received her Master of Arts in Leadership and Organizational Studies from Azusa Pacific University, while Stone is studying Political Science and Public Affairs at UCLA, and Parks is majoring in Criminal Justice at College of the Desert.

“BIGHORN has been instrumental in the success I have achieved at both my work and in my personal life,” said Fran. “You never stop learning. You must continually grow and develop your skills. By going back to school, I could be an example for my young adult sons that self-development is never ending and there’s always time to further your education.”

Stone loves seeing his mother go back to school and enjoys sharing similar challenges such as writing papers and essays. “BIGHORN has given me the ability to be a better student. The scholarship has opened up new doors that were previously closed because of the financial hardships that come with going to a university.”

Parks agrees with Stone, is proud of his mother, and feels that, “BIGHORN has helped me tremendously in my ability to attend college. The scholarship has helped me afford books and other supplies needed to be successful. I am on track with my major and able to graduate in a reasonable time.”

From College of the Desert and nursing school degrees, to Harvard University and everywhere in between, BIGHORN employees and their families are realizing their dreams and building their future with a valuable education -- All thanks to the generosity of BIGHORN and its Members.

MAKING MIRACLES HAPPEN

Since its inception in 2007, BIGHORN BAM (Behind a Miracle) has directly impacted more than 100,000 local patients in their treatment of cancer. The organization has donated nearly $9 million including funds to purchase state-of-the-art cancer treatment equipment, but it did not stop at that. With the realization that no matter how advanced the equipment might be, it means nothing if patients cannot find transportation to get there, BAM made sure that van transportation services would be available for those with no way of reaching that life-saving equipment. To date, the nonprofit has given more than 12,000 rides to assist people to and from their treatments.

BIGHORN BAM founder and breast cancer survivor Selby Dunham started this grassroots effort to assist others in treatment. “I never dreamed the organization would go to this level, but I don’t know if I should be that surprised… knowing the people that support BAM. The generosity of our BIGHORN Members and friends never ceases to amaze me, even after 12 years,” noted Dunham. “It’s truly an honor to be able to make an impact in our community and help provide compassion, love and support for those fighting cancer in the Coachella Valley.”

In addition to funding equipment, research, and transportation services, BAM also supports over 300 families a year through The Pendleton Foundation’s outreach to ease the financial burden of cancer patients by providing crucial items, from groceries to gas gift cards.

Sean Roberts, President of The Pendleton Foundation explained, “When you don’t have food in the refrigerator, you can’t wait three weeks for benefits to come to you. We can approve an application within an hour of receiving it, and the benefits can reach our patients that same day. Those are our people. Those are the ones that BIGHORN BAM touches every single day.”

BAM does not rest on its laurels, but is always seeking new ways to reach those individuals in need. New this year, BAM has partnered with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center to assist its patients. They kicked off their support with a check for $36,000 to help fund gas gift cards and lodging for the Hanson House Foundation, a “home away from home” for the loved ones of critically ill and injured hospitalized patients.

Through the years, BAM has expanded from a focus on breast cancer to all cancers. BAM was able to contribute significantly to the purchase of a True Beam Accelerator, a new piece of equipment that offers the next level of radiation therapy treatments - precise, fast and comfortable.

“The purpose of this is to save lives, and it does,” exclaimed Monica Khanna, M.D. Medical Director of Eisenhower’s BIGHORN Radiation Oncology Center. “It’s just amazing as a physician to work in a place where philanthropy allows us to deliver the best possible care. It’s a miracle to be able to cure these patients.”

Alison Mayer Sachs, Director of Community Outreach & Cancer Support Services at Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center notes, “You can have the best ideas in the world, but let’s be honest, if you don’t have the funding and the people behind it to get you that funding, it’s just an idea. BAM Donors and BIGHORN Members stepped up and made it a reality.”

“You want the definition of Behind a Miracle, there it is, right there.”

homes HOMES SWEET

THE BIGHORN SECOND GENERATION TREND CONTINUES. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER HAS BECOME EASIER AND MORE ENJOYABLE NOW THAT THESE PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS EACH HAVE A BIGHORN RESIDENCE.

Three generations have converged at BIGHORN for one of those family events of a lifetime: a wedding at BIGHORN’s Mountain course driving range. At the beautifully renovated Mountains home of Elizabeth and Jon Hamren, everyone is abuzz with urgent tasks and excited energy as Jon’s daughter, Josy, prepares to marry her fiancé, Andrew Shore, during a long weekend of anticipated events filled with family, friends, and laughter. Over the past six years, BIGHORN has become the backdrop for this family’s get-togethers, both on a grand scale and of the every-day-is-special sort.

The fact that families love BIGHORN isn’t breaking news. It is, however, a self-fulfilling inclination that resonates across multiple

generations, drawing more families to join in the fun each year. The extended Bastiaanse family is one of many that have hand-selected BIGHORN as their meet-up destination, with the intention of future generations carrying on that new tradition.

When Paula and Jerry Bastiaanse bought their residence in 2013, their daughter, Liz, and her husband, Jon Hamren, eagerly followed suit and bought their own house a year later. Now, the busy Seattle Washingtonbased family spends holidays, weekends and school vacations with their two young children at BIGHORN.

With two homes in which to make memories, the active Hamrens and Bastiaanses are among an impassioned segment of Members who understand how the Club’s solid

reputation as a kid-friendly and family-centric community make it the perfect choice for their growing tribe.

“We appreciate the combination of the natural environment and a sophisticated setting that is also fun for the youngsters, which was important to us,” Jerry explains.

“We did a comparative analysis and after much research, BIGHORN was the clear winner.” Paula adds that they were particularly impressed by the host of activities for their grandchildren.

While you might bump into the Bastiaanses in the South of France during July and August, the rest of the year they call BIGHORN home. Jerry specialized in corporate law as an attorney with Kindel & Anderson in Newport Beach before he retired. After years

cont.

at the ocean, the couple is embracing the consistently uplifting climate they craved along the coast.

“I love getting up every morning to see the sun shining,” Paula raves. “In Newport Beach, you get up every morning and have cloud cover.” Jerry and Paula had previously owned homes in the desert, but none, they attest, that rivals BIGHORN’s openheartedness.

“This is an awfully friendly and welcoming community,” Jerry shares. “It’s a common phenomenon for people to smile, wave and say hello. That’s not something we’ve experienced anywhere else.”

That kindliness wasn’t lost on the Hamrens. Liz and Jon originally discovered BIGHORN during their visits with Jerry and Paula. But in purchasing a home that would allow son Jonathan, 9, and daughter, Katherine, 7, to be close to their grandparents, the warm community also won them over.

“We’ve really enjoyed the people we’ve met, in particular those with young families who are here during the same breaks that we are,” Liz says. “The kids all get together to swim at the pool and there are lots of other junior golfers. The program has been a great way for our kids to meet others their age. BIGHORN really is the perfect getaway. It’s so easy and comfortable, you can’t help but relax.”

Relaxation is key for Liz, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Gaming Engineering. With a BSE in Civil Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, she is one of the youngest woman executives at the tech giant and is highly respected in the industry.

“It’s a privilege and a responsibility to be in a position where I can encourage women of all ages to get into science and technology,” she shares. “I take the opportunity seriously and would like to continue to see the ranks of women grow in one of the most important industries in the world.”

For the Hamren children, math is Katherine’s favorite subject in school, while Jonathan is remarkably tech-oriented and both kids excel in science. Yet as much as they also love playing the latest video games, screen time takes a backseat at BIGHORN, where activities and special events await outside the door.

“We make it a point to be here for Family Fun Day, Snow Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and a couple weeks at Christmas so we can all go to Christmas Eve dinner together,” Liz says. Her brother, Gerard, often flies in from Dallas, too, with his wife, Jennifer, and their three young sons. “Even with all those memories we’ve made, for us, it’s less about the big events and more about the everyday things here: playing golf, having dinner and just spending family time together.”

The whole family has jumped into community involvement in the handful of years since they discovered BIGHORN. Paula has even taken a leading role in the Book Group. From a head

Jerry and Paula Bastiaanse

count of less than 10 Members when she took over the Group, she has doubled it in size and elevated the experience by incorporating salon teas and inviting best-selling authors to engage the group, including Lisa See and Madeline Miller. Her email list now boasts over 75 Members who follow along with their reading recommendations. “I also took golf lessons and reached my goal of playing well enough to join the Niners. Now I play nine holes every Tuesday,” she says. “It’s a really fun group, with a lot of crossover between the Niners and the Book Group.”

Everyone has found their own BIGHORN niche, from Katherine learning to ride her bike in the cul-de-sac to Jonathan bringing his A-game for the parents-kids golf tournament with Liz. Following in their parents’ and grandparents’ footsteps, both of these budding golfers get a thrill from hitting the BIGHORN links.

“Bill Madonna (Director of Junior Golf) has done such a fine job with the children in the Junior Golf Program,” praises Jerry, who initially introduced Jonathan to golf through

lessons and sessions at the driving range. “Bill has encouraged them in just the right way and has been very supportive.”

When Liz and Jon want to duck out for date night, Jerry and Paula are nearby. And when the cousins arrive from Texas, Katherine and Jonathan enjoy big sleepovers at their grandparents’ home, which easily accommodates all five grandkids thanks to a custom addition. Liz and Jon’s Mediterranean-style residence is equally family-oriented, having been transformed through an extensive renovation that left it light, open and designed to welcome them back whenever they return.

“We wanted a comfortable, casual family home that would enable us to have people over or have another family down to visit, but not one that was so large we felt like we had to fill it up,” says Jon. “It’s the perfect sized house for us.” Keeping within the original footprint, Jon managed much of the work on the home himself. He converted the family room into two bedrooms for the kids and renovated the pool as well. New floor-to-

ceiling windows frame phenomenal views, while the indoor-outdoor living space is complete with poolside barbeque and pizza oven.

“It’s funny to say this, but even our Goldendoodle, Mel, loves BIGHORN,” Liz laughs. “He goes to the dog park and Yappy Hour and just revels in the warm, sunny weather that he doesn’t get in Seattle.” If only he could take up golf. “Everybody plays now, so with the kids getting older and more experienced, that’s turned out to be a really fun family activity,” Liz says. “BIGHORN creates the opportunity for all of us to spend more time together and do more everyday things together as a family.”

fore something EVERYONE

Photographing two of the most celebrated golf courses anywhere is not unlike playing the courses themselves. You strive to put yourself into an ideal position, gauge the elements, adjust your stance, take aim, and... BANG! The perfect shot.

Of course, these fairways are no strangers to being photographed. The Arthur Hills-designed Mountains Course, and the Tom Fazio-designed Canyons Course have both appeared extensively in televised events, such as The Skins Games, the Battles at BIGHORN, and the LPGA’s Samsung World Championships. Legends of the game, including Palmer, Nicklaus, Stewart, Woods, Trevino, Sorenstam and Pak have thrilled viewers worldwide along these dramatic fairways.

From the Mountains’ breathtaking topography and elevation changes, to the Canyons’ expert bunkering complexes and dramatic water features, each course astutely matches beauty with brawn. A patient assessment of angle, lie, landscape, and the day’s conditions all play a role in the perfect shot.

Over water, across rocky outcroppings, through the sand and on the greens, BIGHORN’s most iconic challenges are portrayed across the following pages, securing their reputations among the world’s best.

17 TH HOLE MOUNTAINS

This gorgeous hole, with its expansive mountain views and reflecting lake, presents an exacting challenge, rewarding precision and punishing the cavalier.

The player must be calculated in his approach, for once he clears the water feature, he is presented with a three-tiered green. The front, middle, and back all reside at different elevations, so pin placement will dictate club selection.

11 TH HOLE MOUNTAINS

A dramatic 40-foot drop in elevation defines this stunning par-3, set against a backdrop of sweeping valley views.

Your tee shot is all carry across the rock strewn base of BIGHORN Mountain and over a dry sand wash to a trio of front-side bunkers guarding the massive green structure. Proper club selection, taking into account any wind speed and direction, is critical. Going long carries its own risks, with undulating grass mounds defining the back of the putting surface.

4 TH HOLE CANYONS

A BIGHORN signature play, the 30-foot downhill drop from tee-to-green makes for an inspired view, and a par-3 shot, which is all carry over water.

The hazard to the left combines with sizeable, strategically placed, pot bunkers dotting the bailout area. These protective bunkers flank a tough two-tiered green where the most challenging pin placement is on the back, lower level.

2 ND HOLE CANYONS

BIGHORN’s biggest star on the Canyons is both beauty and beast.

At over 430 yards, the generous landing area sports peripheral hazards along the right side of the fairway. A fine drive is nonetheless followed by a demanding, elevated approach shot guarded by water before the green. Players seeking bailout will find little reprieve, as a muscular bunkering complex guards the left of the putting surface, and chipping from short and right, asks for measured spin control to a green presenting severe slope.

5 TH HOLE CANYONS

An aggressive tee shot should cover the deep fairway bunker to the right-middle of the fairway. The next shot is no cakewalk since the best of lies faces an uphill approach to a blind cup with only the pin visible as a guide on the multi-leveled green.

A dramatic waterfall to the left of the green feeds a rushing stream that runs along the entire left hand side of the hole. At the base of the waterfall along the stream is a large, protective, greenside bunker whose face of white sand is as intimidating as it is stunning and whose sand uniquely creates the shoreline of the stream.

11 TH HOLE CANYONS

This is one of the most beautiful holes at BIGHORN. At the tee a drift of African daisies explodes with color. In front of the tee around one of BIGHORN’s largest lakes, groves of palms abound, and framing this expansive par four to the sky are the San Jacinto Mountains.

Unfortunately, all this breathtaking majesty won’t help you cover the hazards. Finding the sloped fairway doesn’t guarantee you safety, because the slightest mishit or errant tee shot can trickle backwards into the lake, find the right or left fairway bunkers or, worse yet, end up in the stream that runs the length of the right hand side of the hole. Of course, your problems are just beginning once you clear the water and bunkers as you must now negotiate a difficult green complex. Take solace in the beauty that surrounds you.

18 TH HOLE MOUNTAINS/CLUBHOUSE

The final approach on the Mountains Course is nothing short of magnificent.

The Clubhouse rises majestically above the green with BIGHORN members serving as gallery. Players must contend with a precise approach shot to a putting surface sloping from right to left toward a lake hugging the entire left side of the green.

Players aiming right to avoid the hazard find little relief, as large, protecting bunkers flank the right side of the green and will make your third shot downhill toward the lake challenging.

RAHM KEEPS rising

Provided his proverbial presence on the game’s grandest stages – coupled with his ubiquitous grin in golf marketing campaigns – it’s amazing to consider that BIGHORN Golf Club Member and ambassador, Jon Rahm, just turned 25 in November.

Buoyed by a BIGHORN partnership dating back to March of 2017, the native of Barrika, Spain has earned the attention.

“Working with Jon these past few years has not only met our expectations, but far exceeded them,” says BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. “We all had a sense of his bright future in the game, and the way he’s represented our Club, our Membership, has shown the world what kind of young man he is, both on and off the golf course.”

Considered a blue chip pro prospect since becoming the first player to twice win the Ben Hogan Award (2015-16) as the top male college golfer while at Arizona State University, Rahm, the former top-ranked amateur in the world, has become the rare sure thing to meet the buzz.

As Rahm offered at the onset of his relationship with BIGHORN, the ambassadorship meant passionately carrying the Club’s logo along his impressive journey.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the BIGHORN family,” Rahm said in a 2017 statement. “To be partnered with an internationallyrecognized club such as BIGHORN is incredible. I look forward to proudly carrying their logo on my bag.”

A solid foundation upon BIGHORN’s desert sands appears to have aided Rahm’s continual climb to the top.

After capturing a playoff win at the Desert Classic in La Quinta for his second PGA Tour title in the winter of ‘18, Rahm cemented himself as a fixture among the game’s top-10 players, and seemingly used the valley victory to further springboard his influence across golf podiums.

A European Tour win in his native county followed in the months’ ensuing before Rahm earned a key 2 & 1 victory over Tiger Woods in Sunday Singles at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, France.

Entering the 2019 campaign, Rahm finished a stellar sixth in his Desert Classic title defense before he authored a team play win

(alongside Ryan Palmer) at the PGA Tour’s annual Zurich Classic. Come July, Rahm caught summer sizzle with a two-shot victory at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.

The overseas win marked Rahm’s fourth Euro title in a two-year span, and saw him win the Irish Open for the second time in three years, a title which set the stage for a solid T-11 finish at The Open Championship in Portrush, Ireland two weeks later.

“Once he got the pace of the greens here and his feel back for links golf – he just took off over the weekend,” says Paddy Keane, general manager at Lahinch Golf Club. “The eleven 3’s he carded on Sunday were a course record.”

What Keane saw during Rahm’s Sunday 62 at Lahinch was mere confirmation of the Spaniard’s rise to golf’s pinnacle.

“In my mind, he’s the future world No. 1 player,” added the GM. “There’s no shadow of a doubt about that.”

Considering Rahm’s stellar resume, Keane’s purview appears prescient, and adding a major championship win to his list of accomplishments appears only a matter of time, as Rahm has already charted top-5 finishes in three of golf’s four majors. An overview of his still-brief career (he only turned pro in 2016) impresses only further: Entering the late summer of ‘19, of Rahm’s 71 PGA Tour event played, he made 61 cuts and grabbed 29 top-10 finishes.

While Keane anticipated that Rahm would be among the contenders across his historic links’ grounds, the general manager wasn’t certain what to expect from the young man behind the potent, compact swing. Generally depicted during play for his on-course intensity, what Rahm displays outside the ropes impressed beyond the final round birdie barrage.

“It’s interesting that when you see Jon play on television, he’s often shown as so fiery. But he’s quite the opposite,” Keane says. “At just 24-years-old, he really blew me away; he’s a very special guy. After the win, he was so relaxed, so comfortable and he engaged with everybody throughout the week, and even enjoyed a few drinks at night in the village.”

Keane’s experience was reflective of the Jon Rahm that people the world over have come to know. Whether making time to participate in BIGHORN events such as a Futures of

Golf exhibition, or donating one thousand Euros for every birdie made (and three thousand for every eagle) to the Mexican Red Cross Association at the 2018 WGC Mexico Championship last year, Rahm’s success hasn’t clouded the small-town kid who grew up inspired by the great Seve Ballesteros. Rahm’s adoration for the late legend remains vibrant, as seen via his partnership with Bellesteros’ eponymous foundation, where “Seve & Jon Golf for Kids” sees Rahm working with Seve’s three children to promote the growth of junior golf in their native country.

From fans to course staff to locals and proam partners, Keane’s first-hand experience with the man known as “Rahmbo” offered a portrait of a player owning a maturity and sophistication which belies his years.

“After he won – and this wasn’t on television – during our trophy presentation, it wasn’t about himself or the sponsor or any line like that,” concludes Keane. “It was about the staff here, the head greenskeeper, the volunteers and everybody else. For a young man, he has a lot of maturity.”

And Rahm plays on, growing his game on and off the turf. As the playing pride of BIGHORN, his ambassadorship with the Club matures in turn with his growing influence on the golf world.

Americans love cars. The open road with the wind in your hair is an obvious symbol of freedom. But at the same time, cars are incredibly complex. Millions of moving parts, aerodynamics, and advanced engineering all somehow come together in an easy to use, beautiful machine that can take us places we’ve never been before.

When The Vault at BIGHORN opened in 2015, BIGHORN became the first Club in the country to offer Members a premium automotive showroom with a social experience.

The 22,000 square foot epicenter of car culture at BIGHORN is certainly a thing of beauty – it is also remarkably sophisticated. Beyond the signature, bankvault-style entrance and exit doors, The Vault at BIGHORN incorporates some highly intelligent, if slightly less obvious, technology to keep everything running smoothly. Cloud connected microchips automatically open and close the Vault door when a Member’s car approaches, and fingerprint scanners allow Members access to their prized vehicles 24 hours a day.

Directly adjacent to and raised above the garage floor is the Redline Lounge, a designer, car-inspired sports bar that features

indoor/outdoor seating, full bar menu, and multiple flat-screen televisions where Members gather to talk shop, and attend special events.

“To me, The Vault is what makes BIGHORN so special” says Rick Parker, a Vault Member since its inception. “It is such a unique amenity. Being able to take part in the events here, and to appreciate these amazing machines with fellow Members is just a lot of fun.”

Let’s go under the hood to take a closer look at a few of these exceptional vehicles.

According to the automaker, the 2019 PORSCHE 911 GT2RS is the “most powerful 911 ever built by Porsche.” Indeed, this speedster is reputedly the fastest street legal vehicle on the road today.

Sporting 700 horsepower, this model’s lightweight construction, aerodynamic design and vented body combine with a 3.8-liter, sixcylinder twin turbo engine that will go from 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds.

GREG BROWN 2019 PORSCHE 911 GT2RS

LARRY HURSH 1957 CHEVY CAMEO TRUCK

Reflective of Chevy’s decision to reinvigorate its half-ton models, this Cameo’s popping turquoise paint job defines the ride. Featuring fiberglass side fenders instead of stepsides, Larry Hursh bought this stylish truck at auction in 2009, and has added white paint on the grill and atop the car.

Sitting high with a large back window, this classic remains a head-turner.

“I’ll drive it weekly, and it’s probably the most popular vehicle I have,” says Hursh. “Above all, people just really seem to enjoy the color.”

RICK PARKER 2004 PORSCHE CARRERA GT

Revered among the last of the true “supercars,” Porsche’s ‘04 Carrera GT is the last of its models with a manual stick shift transmission. Boasting over 600 horsepower with its dry-sump V10 engine, the ride achieves 0-60 mph in under four seconds.

Purchased by Rick Parker in 2004, this highperformance vehicle has been at BIGHORN since The Vault’s debut. With fewer than 4,000 miles on the odometer, the owner has never taken this speed machine on a traditional race track, and instead, enjoys the car’s performance on something of a home course.

“I take it up and down Highway 74, which is better than driving on any track,” Parker says.

GREG BROWN 2019 PORSCHE 911 GT3RS

This high-performance sport model with naturally-aspirated engine is, according to Car and Driver , the “most race-car-like Porsche” offering 9000 rpm’s and incredible handle.

For more aerodynamic downforce, the model’s design includes a widened front spoiler lip in concert with widened sideskirts. With a 4.0-liter, six-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine, the 911 GT3 RS revs and rides to the tune of 470Nm torque and achieves 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds. The impressive start line marks graduate to a top speed of 194 mph.

HURSH 1941 PACKARD WOODY DELUX

America’s original station wagon, this very rare 1941 Packard Woody Deluxe One-Ten was acquired by Larry Hursh in 2007. Of the approximately 350 that were originally built, this vintage luxury ride is one of only a handful that exist today.

For drivability, Hursh outfitted the wagon with a V8 and automatic transmission, and had disc brakes installed on the front.

The Packard Woody was originally very popular at resorts and lodges, where the spacious interior was ideal for transporting guests. For Hursh, the purpose hasn’t changed much, “It’s a nice car for picking people up at the airport.”

LARRY

Robbie Pike, an Alabama native and BIGHORN Member, enjoyed every aspect of BIGHORN life in his Mesquite Hills home, which he acquired in 2012. After an extensive one-year remodel, the residence became a home-away-from-home and a perfect retreat for relaxation, entertaining and making lifetime memories with visiting family and friends. But, when the opportunity arose to acquire one of BIGHORN’s most prominent and well-known residences, he seized the moment, and with purpose and vision went about customizing an iconic piece of architecture.

The residence, located atop Kovenish Court at the end of a cul-de-sac, is situated on a double lot that overlooks the beautiful par 5 Mountains 15th hole with water and panoramic views. This perfect location provides ready accessibility to the Clubhouse, golf, the Spa, Salon & Fitness Center, and Marketplace. Its relative proximity to the Mountains main entry also provides easy access to the Canyons and Steak House. Although this celebrated home is close to all the BIGHORN action and near the heart of Palm Desert, it provides ultimate privacy with an estate feel.

The residence formerly belonged to BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard and his wife, Joan Dale. Built in 1991, its interiors were the work of the late, famed talent, Steve Chase, who created its polished Southwest elegance, perfect for showcasing the Hubbards’ extensive and acclaimed Western art collection. This home set the gold standard of excellence for BIGHORN through the Club’s formative years.

Pike’s decision to invest in this remarkable property was quite brilliant. He knew what he was looking for and there was no question that the Hubbard home provided all of the qualities and intangibles for a successful and dynamic remodel. In addition to its desirable location, the home’s strategic orientation, bone structure and quality construction provided the perfect framework upon which to build the next generation BIGHORN residence. Not only did it live up to Pike’s discriminating expectations, it far surpassed them.

Pike and Hubbard discussed the home’s changing of hands for several years before it transpired. “Mr. Hubbard knew about the extensive remodels of my Birmingham and Mesquite Hills homes,” Pike explained. “We both felt I could put together the right team of professionals with the expertise to transform the residence into a statement of contemporary sophistication, relevant to today’s lifestyle. It would honor the basic structure of the Hubbards’ design, which fit so well on the double lot, but modernize its capabilities and style. It also provided ample opportunity for opening more interior space to the amazing views and provided room to expand.”

After a two-year renovation encompassing all aspects of the property, the finished outcome allows rich, designer interiors to meld with a myriad of accessible indoor-outdoor living spaces, featuring some of BIGHORN’s finest views.

Part of Pike’s goal was to create an environment where every family member, guest or business associate feels welcomed, experiencing that sense of ease and relaxation when on vacation. He wanted a home that easily accommodates the intimacy of a family visit or the demands of a sizable crowd for a weekend event. He deftly accomplished both.

Pike, CEO of Birmingham’s P&S Transportation, maintains his primary home in Florida, traveling often for business. He developed an affinity for the desert when he was younger. His parents owned a home in Palm Desert for a time, and to this day, he relishes each return trip as a chance to share this beautiful valley and his new home with his loved ones and business associates.

From the moment guests arrive, they are wowed by the sculptures, detached guest suites, and two-bedroom “pilot’s quarters,” which overlook a showplace-style Ferrari collection – all before stepping into the main house. Once inside, the floor plan flows up three stories to the penthouse master suite and office. Each level opens out to the terraced pool and grotto, complemented by cabanas and fire features. The home offers a luxurious degree of hospitality to its guests and leaves most first-time visitors simply speechless. The 20,000 square-foot, 10-bedroom residence packs a real “wow” factor.

Though Pike’s home might appear to be a custom-build, newly constructed from the ground up to his specifications, in reality, it is a revitalization in every sense of the word.

To accomplish the remodel, he enlisted two skilled professionals to transform this Kovenish Court residence into a poolside paradise. Richard Pruter of Par Development and interior designer Troy Zimmerman arrived ready to reinvent the home for its new owner. After a meeting to discuss direction, followed by Pike’s review of sketches and concepts, they were encouraged to take cues from his preferences and run with his dream.

“He trusted Troy and I from start to finish,” says Pruter, who performed all of the significant structural changes while Zimmerman selected the surfaces, lighting, hardware, finishes and furnishings which were bespoke to each environment. “The two of us worked very closely, all the way through.”

A chic, Euro-infused design, enhanced by state-of-the-art electronics, an elevator, and a top-of-the-line home automation system, make this home Pike’s own. Conversation areas, both grand and intimate in scale, pair with seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, essential for relishing family time at BIGHORN.

“The most amazing structural difference is that we removed the back end the house,”

says Pruter, referring to the once rounded exterior that was closed to the outdoors. “That’s what opened possibilities and really elevated the new home. Now you can step outside through the pocketing glass doors on every floor and take advantage of the views.”

Ever the gracious host, Pike requested multiple entertainment areas around the property. “He’s a generous guy who wants everyone to have a good time,” Pruter affirms. The tasteful entry bar, in particular, starts any gathering off on the right note.

Clever innovations are woven into the home’s new design, from Zimmerman’s retractable living room television (replaced by a painting at the push of a button), to the starry dining room illumination that ushers heaven’s constellations indoors. “This is the first residential application of this star lighting,” Zimmerman notes of the dining space, where a wall of wine is displayed behind glass. “Only the Dior showrooms beat us to the punch. Ours was the second ever installation.”

Discreet casters on the tables let them roll together for group configurations; al fresco dining areas offer additional seating and flexibility. In the kitchen, Pike’s concept for

mess hall-style seating where his friends could enjoy a buffet is a tailored solution for casual get-togethers. The addition of a butler’s pantry for catered affairs complements new cabinets, tile work, appliances and finishes.

Lighter color schemes, fresh paint and new wallpaper, doors, fixtures and custom headboards in every bedroom contribute to the home’s fresh design. Only a few vestiges remain from the original build, including rich wood ceilings, a curved window in the new theater and exotic marble in one of three jewelbox powder rooms. “Our aim was to make it more hip, bright and contemporary while opening it up to those views,” Pruter says.

The top floor is reserved for the palatial master suite. In the spa-style bathroom, Zimmerman sandblasted the windows to artfully combine natural light with privacy. He also optimized the space in the bedroom by integrating elements of a great room. The tranquil retreat invites quiet moments and reflection. Crossing the balcony, furnished with sun loungers, a swing chair and a TV lounge, one reaches an executive office that shares the master suite’s sun deck.

On the lower level in the center of the house an expansive space stretching the height of three floors is lit by the soft glow of sunlight filtering in through new skylights. A full-size snooker table and multiple card tables create a large-scale game room. The setting doubles as a venue for concerts and live entertainment, featuring a stage for live music and a wall display of classic guitars from rock legends.

It was here that Zimmerman tapped into Pike’s affinity for the Coachella Music Festival by suggesting a unique and unexpected twist. He elicited one of the Festival’s featured artists to paint a contemporary mural of graffiti impressions over the full length of an entire wall.

In the adjacent space, a former home theater reemerged as the Ferrari Club, a commercial-quality bar that adjoins the backyard. A fleet of stools face wall-mounted TVs above the bar. Floating above, pieces of crackled glass are backlit with an array of colored lights.

Guests of all ages appreciate the integration of grottos, swim-up bars, hot tubs, wading pools, waterfalls, and a tanning shelf with chairs that sit in the shallow water into the year-round pool experience.

Nearing the end of the project, Pike made one final request. “He wanted to add a big outdoor screen, like the ones you see in football stadiums, but didn’t want to compromise the view,” Pruter recalls. “So, we built a 13-foot-deep concrete vault that has air conditioning, sump pipes and electrical power to accommodate a custom built 16’ x 19’ giant, automated screen that comes out of the ground. The installation was so complicated it required site-specific engineering. You don’t ever see this in a custom home. It’s a very special amenity.”

The LEDs in the television are powerful enough that the family can float in the pool in the middle of the day while watching their favorite sports team claim a victory. “It doesn’t get any better than that!” Pruter notes. Except, that is, when Pike and his young son play video games on the big screen from the home’s uppermost balcony.

What was once a predominantly desert landscape now embodies a more tropical atmosphere with lush foliage, soft grass, and new rock walls. Outdoor areas are complete with conversation areas, lawn games, and radiant fire pits across the three levels and, coupled with the lighting design, makes for incredible ambiance at night.

The “pilot’s quarters,” set between the main house and existing detached guest suites across the cul-de-sac, is a two-bedroom casita with a sitting room in the

middle. It sits atop an air-conditioned garage designed around two loves: Ferraris and pinball. Originally built for Pike’s pilots, friends and family are also enjoying it. The arcade adds a dash of fun to this serious showroom. Pike and his son look forward to visiting as often as they can, playing all 17 pinball machines.

Given the amenities, floorplan, and number of bedrooms, the new Pike residence functions as a family home and an idyllic escape that can be savored in countless ways.

“Whether I’m there with clients, family, or friends, I have ample space for all my guests,” Pike explains. “My goal was to create an environment where everyone could gather and enjoy each other’s company, or they could get away from the action and have some down time with all the comforts and amenities of a five-star resort.”

In its coveted locale on the BIGHORN landscape, the estate is a testament to the fact that one home can equally represent each subsequent owner’s taste, needs and lifestyle. “Richard and Troy really stepped up and helped me understand what it was that I wanted. They even took some of my crazy ideas and were able to develop them,” Pike notes. “And Mr. Hubbard was very good to me from the very beginning. We have since become great friends. I’m very glad I saw the potential in modernizing what the Hubbards created while honoring the house’s structure and location. I’m very happy with the outcome. I think most people who visit feel the same way.”

CHEF NICK STENDEBACH THRIVES ON THE CULINARY

EDGE

Challenge the New York native to wow your palate with an unfamiliar flavor and your next reservation will find you salivating over abalone flown in fresh from Hawaii or a tempranillo-braised wild boar shank scented with house-grown herbs. Such specials are de rigeur at BIGHORN’s Canyons Steak House, where Chef de Cuisine Nick Stendebach inspires with his sensory-driven approach to dining out.

“It’s about the whole experience,” he says, from the ambiance to the service to the aromatic and visual appeal of a plate. In effect, your meal begins the moment you arrive, with a warm reception and a valet who knows your name, and it carries on until the dazzling sun dips below the horizon and dessert spoons finally drop.

Member favorites return season after season, but Stendebach’s menu rotates regularly with prime meat, seafood, and selections of game. After four years with the Club, he anticipates requests before they are made — he knows which Members require vegan options and who might delight in an extra-large portion of steak. And he doesn’t shy away from modifications.

“The answer is never, ‘No,’ ” says BIGHORN Member Josh Levy. “If they don’t have an item you want, they’ll order it. It could be any type of game, seafood, or truffle, you just name it. It’s endless what he can source and prepare.”

“From an artistic standpoint, I love creating,” shares Stendebach, who draws influence from his training in French and Mediterranean techniques and regional recipes of Japan and the Pacific Rim. “I love being able to do something I’ve never done before. Even if I don’t know what the result will taste like, I know the components. I put everything together and make sure it tastes wonderful. It’s like painting a picture — but on a plate.”

Plus, he points out, the food needs to stand up against the live music and captivating views.

Built in 2006 by KHA Architects and interior design input from Fedderly & Associates, Canyons Steak House overlooks the valley from its perch on the Tom Fazio–designed Canyons Course. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the octagonal space, transforming the vista into nonpareil panoramic art. The main dining room centers around a grand

cylindrical fireplace embedded with roughcut crystals that glimmer in the natural light. From the statement feature’s topmost point, angled mahogany paneling spirals out in an undulating pinwheel formation across the vaulted ceiling, and cozy booths and tables scatter at its feet. An expansive patio with infinity pools lines the back of the restaurant. Smaller indoor and outdoor dining areas accommodate private gatherings, and intimate conversation nooks can be found at the bar and in the adjacent temperaturecontrolled wine lounge.

The Steak House also contains a humidor and wine lockers for Members, who can work with Clubhouse Manager Juan Blanchard, a certified sommelier, to order almost any label. Staff takes care of delivery and storage, so the bottle (or smoke) is in-house and ready for enjoyment upon request.

In the kitchen, Stendebach most often oversees his crew and runs the sushi station. But he fills in where needed, and it wouldn’t be unusual to see him wielding knives and sauce pans behind the line. Although Stendebach held various positions in the culinary sphere through his youth (his

first job, at age 15, was as a dishwasher at a French bistro where his older brother worked), the would-be chef pursued art school. He studied packaging design, advertising design, and fine and studio art at Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a graphic designer in Manhattan before transmogrifying his fondness for aesthetics into cuisine and bold plating. He attended New York Restaurant School for culinary training. Prior to joining BIGHORN in 2015, he cheffed at two Indian Wells clubs, Garden of the Gods Resort & Club in Colorado Springs, and Rock Creek Cattle Company in Montana.

To Stendebach, success is not measured in expectations met but in those he exceeds. “I love that the Members want to eat with us. They would rather come to the Steak House than go anywhere else, and that makes me, personally, feel great,” he says. “We have an amazing staff that helps me create this vision — they’re the instruments, I’m the culinary conductor. We make sure every single dish that goes out is exactly as good as the first time it was made.”

PEOPLE ARE TALKING

BIGHORN Members share a few of their favorite moments from Canyons Steak House.

JOO KIM-YU MEMBER

Why you love it : It’s close. Literally, we can take our golf cart to get there. The amenities are great, and the staff’s friendliness is awesome. They make it very personal for you — they know you by your name, and they remember you. So when you come back, you always feel welcomed.

What you order : I like the appetizers and sushi rolls. I’ve been to almost all the steakhouses in the valley, and with few exceptions, you cannot get a sushi roll and steak in the same place. Here, you can.

GABE AGUIRRE MEMBER

Favorite memory : On our girls’ night out, we were going to Fashion Week El Paseo and started off with dinner at Canyons Steak House. The chef customized the dinner for us — everything was off-menu, and it was extraordinary. Some of the girls have a shellfish allergy, so he made a special dish for them. He was so very considerate. Our group consisted of Members and non-Member friends and everyone had an equally great time. The drinks are always the best in the Valley and the food is simply amazing.

Why you love it : The amenities are first-class. I entertain clients and friends there, and everybody’s experience is always far beyond their expectations, from the food to the service and just everything in general. We have a six-year-old son, and ultimately, they’ll make anything he wants — it’s the little things that set it apart. It’s how BIGHORN takes care of its Members.

What you order : The filet, the wedge salad, and the wine.

Favorite memory : It was our 12th wedding anniversary, so of course we went to the Steak House. All the staff knew that it was our special day. As we entered, the manager, Ramon, said, “Happy anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Aguirre,” as did the servers. The harpist played a song at our table. The bartender knows we really like tequila, so he sent us two excellent shots. That whole experience, not to mention the food, just made us feel super special. Why would we go anywhere else?

BIGHORN

ERICA AND JEFF MCILROY ARE SECOND-GENERATION MEMBERS BUYING THEIR FIRST HOME NINE YEARS AFTER THEIR PARENTS JOINED. THIS IS A GROWING TREND AT BIGHORN WHERE THERE ARE NOW 29 SECOND-GENERATION MEMBERS.

Top row from left: Peter lll, Ashley & Brandon
Front row from left: Peter ll & Pam McIlroy, Erica & Jeff McIlroy

It’s 11 a.m. on a Friday in April, which means it’s festival season in the desert. Jeff and Erica McIlroy’s lavish BIGHORN home is abuzz with activity as teens and twenty-something’s flit back and forth from pool to guest villa, trying on outfits, tweaking sunglass angles and auditioning headwear. Tonight is the first night of the Coachella Music Festival and everyone is pouring considerable effort into looking casually hip, like they just threw something on. The athleisure vibe that they’re cultivating looks like the ‘70s took a road trip to the future. Platform high-tops under athletic shorts and pastel tank tops, topped with rainbow headbands.

The group of 15 is made up of Jeff and Erica’s three kids: Brandon (17), Peter (19), and Ashley (22), and 12 of their closest friends. Jeff and Erica preside over this open and freewheeling atmosphere with a smile and a healthy dose of patience. They remember what it was like coming to the desert at that age. After all, Jeff brought Erica here for the first time when she was just 22.

Jeff’s parents, Pam and Peter McIlroy II, never could have imagined this scene 30 years ago when they visited the desert for the first time. They were in town for an electrical manufacturing conference and “just fell in love with the desert,” says Pam.

They started vacationing here, bringing the entire family along for the ride. The kids instantly took to the tennis, the crisp desert air and sunshine in the winter. After several years, they bought a home at a club across town, but it wasn’t active enough. “It just wasn’t the right fit,” says Peter.

Ten years ago, they purchased a gorgeous home at BIGHORN and were thrilled. Then, five years ago, they saw a home they loved even more, sold their original home, and bought a new one. “There’s energy here. It feels more like living at a resort than at a Club,” says Pam. They love the freedom they experience at BIGHORN. “The only rule is there are no rules,” adds Peter.

In the back of their minds, Jeff and Erica always planned to own a home at BIGHORN too, but had no immediate plans to do so. They figured they would wait two or three years until their youngest graduated and see how things panned out.

That’s why no one took it all that seriously when Pam suggested they contact BIGHORN Properties realtor Jacquie Burns to take a look at some houses. They did it for fun, on a lark. The first two homes they saw were great, but the third one… “You should’ve seen Erica’s face when she walked in. I knew it was all over,” says Jeff.

They bought their home a year ago and for a family that was already close, BIGHORN has brought them even closer.

It makes all the sense in the world that BIGHORN would be the perfect place for the McIlroys, since the whole structure of their lives is built on family.

You should’ve seen Erica’s face when she walked in... I knew it was all over.
-Jeff Mcllroy

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Sometime in the early morning hours of a cold February day in 1905, a young Scottish immigrant set foot on American soil for the first time. His name was Peter McIlroy Sr. –Jeff’s great grandfather.

He took a blue-collar job at a steel mill and after several back-breaking years, he started an enameled metal business in his garage. That was the beginning of a family enterprise that has spanned four generations and 114 years. For well over a century, Robroy Industries, Inc. has been a leader in electronics manufacturing.

When Peter McIlroy’s Sr.’s son, Robert, returned from World War II after having been lost at sea, he came to work for his father. He started at the bottom and earned his way up, eventually leading the company to an unprecedented level of success. A work ethic and a commitment to the family business was born that has been repeated by every generation since. The McIlroy family legacy is a true American success story.

And that’s why, when Peter McIlroy ll – Jeff’s Father – came of age, he devoted himself to Robroy Industries, building it up to a

multimillion-dollar/multi-national corporation until he retired fifty years later in 2014.

Jeff too, worked his way up from the factory floor, doing every job along the way. Now he is Chairman of the Board and runs the business in tandem with his brother Rob, who is CEO.

It’s no surprise that family is at the very heart of their business, because it’s at the very center of everything they do.

FAMILY IS THE CENTER

If the McIlroys’ lives revolve around family, then Pam is at the very center.

She and Peter have been married for 52 years and she’s the rock of the family, the glue that holds everything together. The one who makes family happen.

“Bunny” as the grandkids affectionately call her, takes a break from making everything beautiful to listen as her youngest granddaughter talks about frogs for half an hour.

Peter pauses as they talk about dividing their time between three homes, looks lovingly at his wife, and says, “You seem happiest to me at BIGHORN.”

The McIlroys are very active. Tennis is a family obsession. They attend all the Club’s events, enjoy some golf as well, but their favorite thing to do is redecorate, refurbish and remodel their home. A close second is the unexpected encounters at BIGHORN. “Running into your grand kids on campus is such a treat,” says Peter.

Jeff and Erica’s love affair began when they met while she attended law school and he was in business school. A few years later they were married.

Erica worked for Legal Aid as a lawyer until she encountered some health issues. During her journey back to wellness, she investigated many different healing modalities, which fundamentally changed how she looked at the world. So, after many years, she decided to open Green Heiress Holistic Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

From left: Erica & Jeff, Peter ll & Pam, Rob & Shelly

She manages and runs the burgeoning business that began with a single yoga studio and has now expanded to two locations. She also conducts corporate wellness trainings and with her legal background, she’s the perfect person to bridge the gap between corporate structure and transformational healing. Now that she’s a BIGHORN resident, don’t be surprised if you see a Green Heiress opening on El Paseo in the near future.

Like their parents, Jeff and Erica lead a very active lifestyle. They visit the desert once or twice a month. They attend BNP Paribas

Open every year and are highly involved in the tennis community. They love to hike and with access to trails right out their back door, it couldn’t be more perfect. Additionally, they enjoy entertaining, exploring Modernism Week, and frequenting all the local festivals.

The McIlroys have discovered that each generation enjoys all that BIGHORN has to offer in their own ways.

Much to Jeff and Erica’s delight, daughter Ashley is moving to Los Angeles and youngest son Brandon is moving to the west

coast as well, to attend business school at Chapman University. Like their parents, they love BIGHORN and enjoy attending Coachella Fest and Stagecoach.

When asked if she’ll be doing the same interview in 20 years, Ashley says, “I could really see myself owning a home at BIGHORN one day.” And Bunny says, “I have no doubt that will happen.”

Erica McIlroy tells the story of seeing their new home for the first time.

FRIENDSHIPS FORGED AT THE DOG PARKS

Every morning, like clockwork, Spider, a frisky 7-pound black Havanese, rounds the corner, scrambling across marble floors to wake up Ralph and Kay Hemingway so he can visit his best canine friend, Morrie.

Down the street, Sam, a playful Australian Labradoodle, is learning to sit on command and waiting petulantly for Gee, his older apricot Australian Labradoodle companion, to climb aboard Robin Stonehill’s SUV and ride to the dog park and “run the fence.”

Across the way, Beau races for the front door, dragging Howard and Sheri Neff from their morning coffee, ready to visit his furry friends and chase tennis balls for as long as possible.

These energetic pups and hundreds of others have found their way into the parks— and hearts—of BIGHORN. The dog parks, conveniently located on both the Mountains and Canyons courses, are more than places for dogs to play fetch— it’s where Members gather, to make plans, and form new friendships.

Each morning the grounds are manicured to perfection, with each park featuring a covered pavilion, a public grill, guest seating, picnic tables, grassy fields, a restroom, and even a cooler with bottled water. The comfortable and scenic facilities provide limitless opportunities for Members to mingle in a relaxed and entertaining environment while their pups play and make canine companions.

Robin Stonehill, the unofficial “Mayor” of the Mountains dog park, has observed the positive social effect that the BIGHORN parks have had on Members and guests for quite some time. He explains, “This is what is so great about our dog parks… We have the golf group, tennis group, spa group, we have people who love to play bridge, etc. But everyone converges in the dog park. You get to meet the tennis players - who you’d never meet on the golf course, and vice versa.”

Last year, Stonehill met a Canadian couple at the dog park who were new residents of BIGHORN. He asked them if they would like to join him and his wife, Carlyn, for dinner that evening at the Pour House. That offer

led to a congenial friendship and the Stonehill’s recently accepted an invitation to visit during the summer at the Canadian couples’ Victoria, British Columbia home.

Reflecting on a time when he and his wife first moved to BIGHORN, Hemingway shares an anecdote about Don and Deanna Etsekson, and their dog, Morrie, who immediately bonded with their beloved Spider. He recalls, “One of the biggest surprises occurred when we returned to Washington and ran into the Etseksons. It turns out they also have a house on Mercer Island. It’s amazing. We know people in different states by their dogs at the park.”

For the Hemingways, the subgroups of owners and their dogs are also special. “There are about six of us that each have a Havanese. It’s like a fraternity of sorts. Peggy Jacobs has an amazing and talented Havanese, Teddy Roosevelt, who performs a variety of tricks to the delight of all. It’s quite entertaining,” he beams.

The growing list of pet enthusiast perks at BIGHORN includes, dining with pets at the Golf House and Marketplace, the ability to register one’s dog with Privacy Central Station – in case a dog is lost, admission to the FRIDAY AFTERNOON CLUB - where Members can enjoy food & beverage service at the Mountains dog park, and the much anticipated canine celebration – Yappy Hour!

According to Karen and Jimmy Buxbaum, Yappy Hour is one their favorite social activities of the season. Their four Cocker Spaniels (Hannah, Sammy, Annie, Dallas) and Labradoodle (Emily) agree. The event welcomes dogs of all breeds (and their owners) to enjoy a variety of experiences, such as first-class shopping from more than 15 pet retailers, training demonstrations, a mixer - featuring chef-prepared canine cookies, and even a pet psychic. It also serves as an opportunity for organizations like the Animal Samaritans to find homes for shelter dogs. The excitement rises to a crescendo when photographers assemble Members and their dogs for family photos. “We’re big fans of the annual Yappy Hour. The turnout, the incredible enthusiasm of the group, and the professional photographer are all great aspects of the event,” said the Buxbaums.

Because BIGHORN specializes in creating one-of-a-kind experiences, it offers Members and their pets an opportunity to play “offleash”; laughing, socializing, fetching, frolicking and most importantly – forming lifelong friendships.

The next time you’re near the dog park, stop by. Spider, Sam and Beau just might be there to greet you with a lick and a smile.

golden ticket

THIS SON OF A NEW YORK CITY COP, WHO DIDN’T TOUCH A TENNIS RACKET UNTIL 24, WENT ON TO BECOME THE DIRECTOR OF TENNIS AND FITNESS AT ONE OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE CLUBS IN THE WORLD.

FRANK FANNING & THE

QUESTION: Were you an athletic kid?

ANSWER: I played stick ball and then as I got older, little league. I played every sport. I loved football and basketball, but my dream was to play in the NBA.

QUESTION: Did you play tennis growing up?

ANSWER: I grew up in the Bronx and my dad was an Irish cop. Nobody in that world played tennis. They would’ve made fun of me if I’d played.

QUESTION: When did you pick up a racket for the first time?

ANSWER: Twenty-four. I went into the army after high school, then I took the test to become a cop – like my father. After the test, I was assigned to a lottery and was going to be assigned to Housing Authority, Transit, or regular Police. Everybody wanted regular Police. That was the golden ticket and I got it. Then I had to tell my dad, I don’t think I want to do this. My father was very upset, after all, I had the golden ticket.

QUESTION: So, you had no idea what you wanted to do, you just knew you didn’t want to be a police officer?

ANSWER: Exactly, then I met Tom Gullickson (a former ATP Pro, who coached Jennifer Capriati and later Pete Sampras) at a Christmas party. I was inspired by him and I said, I think I can play tennis. He said, ‘We should play some time.’ When I told my dad, he explained, ‘Tom charges about $300 an hour and I’m not paying for it, so you better make sure.’ After hitting with Tom, I was hooked and told my dad, I think I want to be a tennis player, to which he responded, ‘You’re out of your mind.’

QUESTION: How did that lead to you becoming a teaching pro?

ANSWER: I was very fortunate. I met the right people at the right time. I applied for a job as an assistant coach at Cleveland State. I told the head coach, I’m not that good, but I’ll do anything. I want to learn. So, I left Florida for Cleveland and ended up coaching an all girl’s Catholic high school team and working at a fitness club as a tennis pro. I still didn’t really know how to play.

Then I got a seasonal job at Ironwood and had a badge to run rackets to the pros at the Newsweek Champions Cup, now known as the BNP Paribas Open. Out on the court, I saw Tom Gullickson. I ran over to him, yelling, Tom, Tom, Tom, and he said, ‘I’m Tim, Tom’s twin brother.’ Pete Sampras was standing there next to him and he had just won the U.S. Open for the first time. Tim invited me to dinner, and I showed up at his hotel room and Pete opened the door. It was insane.

So, we all went to dinner along with Phil Knight and Ian Hamilton from Nike, and Mike Casey who ran La Quinta Resort. Pete won that tournament and signed his deal with Nike that very weekend. And that was my first year in tennis.

QUESTION: Wow. That’s quite a first year. Have you been in the desert ever since?

ANSWER: No, I always wanted to come back out here, but I was working in New York for years and at a few tennis academies in Florida. I ended up getting a private coaching job that took me to Cape Cod for about four years and I worked in some of the most affluent clubs on the East Coast.

QUESTION: What brought you back to the desert?

ANSWER: It just so happened that a job opened up at BIGHORN. I applied from back East and the Director of Tennis called me. He had no idea I was living in New York. He said, ‘I have some time on Thursday if you want to meet.’

So, I packed up my car and drove out on a Tuesday, sort of knowing I’d get the job. The day I met the Director, he was on the court with Member Nannette Uri, who told him, ‘He’s the right guy. Hire him.’ So I owe it all to Nannette.

QUESTION: What’s it been like teaching and becoming the Director of Fitness at BIGHORN?

ANSWER: It’s been an amazing experience. The Members are incredible. They range in age from 20’s to 80’s and they enjoy the community camaraderie and friendly competition. No question some of our Members in their 70’s and 80’s are still pretty competitive and it’s great. It’s unbelievable how life comes full circle. I met Pete Sampras right at the beginning and now, twenty-four years later, I work with his son. It’s nuts. I still can’t believe it.

QUESTION: What’s your greatest memory?

ANSWER: I was the lead on a huge event held here at BIGHORN, a tennis tournament played for the Mason Zisette Memorial Heart Trophy. My parents were invited to visit, so my dad got to see the whole event and watch the pros play. I’m leaning against the fence and I say, not bad, huh, and he looks at me and says, ‘Yeah, but if you had been a cop you’d be retired by now.’ But he was in heaven. His health was already declining, but the Members were really nice, treated him like family, and got him sweet tickets and parking, so he felt like a rock star for the entire week. It was the best week of our lives.

That’s the reason I feel like it’s home here, because of how they treated my dad. They went above and beyond and treated us like family. Once you do something like that, you got me. I’m loyal.

QUESTION: Any parting thoughts?

ANSWER: The opportunity here has been an absolute blessing and I’m so grateful for Carl Cardinalli, Tony Ogrodnick, and Mr. Hubbard — for the confidence they’ve shown in me to be a part of this amazing community — It’s not taken lightly. Like I said, I’m an old school, loyal, Irish guy. They’ve earned my trust and I’d do anything for them.

FOREVER

COUNTRY SINGER BRETT YOUNG RETURNED TO BIGHORN FOR A PRIVATE CONCERT FOUR MONTHS AFTER MARRYING LONGTIME GIRLFRIEND TAYLOR MILLS ON THE PICTURESQUE CANYONS COURSE.

In baseball lingo, it’s called the “sweet spot.” An undefined, immeasurable, almost mythical part of the bat’s barrel, from which the ball launches into the stratosphere when struck at just the right angle.

A play by play of both his personal life and career would conclude that country star Brett Young has found his “sweet spot.” But to hear him tell it, the journey from highly touted baseball prospect to platinum-selling artist has been a series of “happy accidents.”

After graduating from Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa, Young attended Ole Miss, Irvine Valley College and Fresno State in pursuit of his dream to become a Major League pitcher.

“My story kind of starts with baseball, not music,” he said last March, moments before taking the stage for a private concert under the stars at BIGHORN. “The majority of my first twenty-two years was all things sport, and it looked like it was going to be a baseball career until I hurt myself playing college baseball. I didn’t ever really look at music like a long-term play or even a career.”

Young grew up in church where singing was an enjoyable hobby. After the career ending elbow injury, he had to find some way to make a living, preferably not a desk job.

“Music was the only thing I’ve ever loved as much as baseball.”

He found a bunch of places that paid him to play on random weekdays and before he knew it, his hobby morphed into a legitimate career.

After relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville, the capital of country music, Young debuted his first album, a six-song EP, titled

Brett Young. The singles “Sleep Without You,” “In Case You Didn’t Know,” and “Like I Loved You” received extensive airplay and the EP was certified triple-platinum.

Young felt strangely at home in Nashville. “It’s a competitive place,” he noted, “but it’s not about getting ahead. It’s about building each other up while trying to make yourself better.

“The other incredible thing is the work ethic in country music.” The typical workday for songwriters in Nashville is demanding, in order to dish out five songs a week. “It’s serious business. The hustle’s real and people work.”

At the age of 38, Young is just getting started. He released his sophomore album, Ticket to L.A., featuring 10 songs he co-wrote, including the hit single “Here Tonight” – which was written with Charles Kelley, lead singer of Lady Antebellum. Additional collaborators included Young’s idol, Gavin DeGraw, Grammy nominated Ross Copperman, and Ashley Gorley, to name a few. Ticket to L.A. debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums, number 15 on the Billboard 200, and sold 27,000 copies in the first week alone.

In November 2018, Young married longtime girlfriend Taylor Mills in a private ceremony at BIGHORN. For the couple, BIGHORN is a special place. Taylor grew up in the desert, so when they were looking for wedding venues, they instantly thought of BIGHORN, which suited all of their needs for a perfect weekend of wedding activities.

The couple kicked off their matrimonial celebrations with their family at a rehearsal dinner in The Canyons Steak House, followed by a “Welcome to Town” party at The Vault for more than 200 guests. The following day, family and friends gathered around the signature second hole at the Canyons Course to watch the couple exchange their heartfelt vows.

Wedding guests then headed to the exquisitely decorated Event Terrace for a cocktail reception, dinner and dancing. The star-studded festivities included performances by fellow country artists Luke Combs and Lee Brice, after which Gavin DeGraw, joined in on the fun, performing “More than Anyone.” The newlyweds glided across the dance floor to a special rendition of “Forever Young,” arranged by Young’s longtime producer Dan Huff. With the celebration still going strong, many of the guests joined the lively after-party at the HUB.

The nuptials generated extensive media coverage in outlets such as People Magazine and TMZ in addition to significant social media interest for both the couple and the Club.

Reflecting on that special day, Young said, “The venue was perfect, and the weather was perfect… The team here at BIGHORN really knocked it out of the park.”
