LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS Dear Friends, In 2013, we celebrated 95 years of recruiting, screening, training, matching and supporting caring adult mentors to Colorado kids facing adversity! On behalf of all kids we have served since 1918, we thank our volunteers, donors, partners, collaborators, staff and board members. You are all part of a movement that has been proven by research to positively change children’s lives. As I reflect on my first year as the agency CEO, the highlights for me include meeting John and Adriano, the Big Brother and Little Brother combo who, after four years together, celebrated Adriano’s entry into college. I remember hearing the news about Little Sister Andrea being accepted for the prestigious Annexstad Foundation Big Brothers Big Sisters Scholarship to the University of Colorado Boulder. But just as important, I also remember the infectious laughter of a group of Bigs and Littles as they played a game with Denver Bronco Cornerback Chris Harris, Jr, in our office conference room. I recall witnessing the joy on a young girl’s face as she met her own Big Sister for the very first time. All of this culminated to showcase the profound difference we are making in the lives of Colorado’s children and families. Every day we are reminded of the impact we make in the community. For the children we serve, our primary concern remains their safety, health and well-being. To each child we make the following promise: We will help you reach higher aspirations, gain greater confidence, avoid risky behaviors, build better relationships, and achieve educational success. And we are living up to that promise, serving 1790 children in 2013, and seeing measurable improvement in socio-emotional indicators, school attendance, behavior and grades. In 2013, we made tremendous progress towards meeting the needs of more of Colorado’s children and families. RIVER EXPLORATION TEAM BIG! - STEM EVENT For the 2nd year in a row, Colorado Trout Unlimited and Denver Parks and Recreation teamed up to give Littles and Bigs a fun and hands on learning experience exploring a river and its creatures up close.
PROGRAMS Big Brothers Big Sisters’ professional staff recruit, screen and train volunteer mentors (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) and match them in one-to-one relationships with young people. We support and oversee the success of each match by communicating regularly with the volunteers, the children and their families and by providing activities designed to strengthen the match relationship. We know from research that successful mentoring relationships have a lasting impact on young people and their families, offer positive experiences for volunteers and create stronger, safer and more successful communities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado serves youth aged 7-18 through a variety of programs Community Based Mentoring - the signature Big Brothers Big Sisters program in which each Big and Little meet several times per month and choose activities to do together in the community based on shared interests and match goals. Matches in this program also have access to enrichment activities developed and coordinated by our staff.
Sports Buddies Mentoring - an innovative program designed to engage male volunteers to mentor
boys in the community who are in need of male role models. Matches meet one to four times per month to participate in agency-supervised activities that involve attending and/or participating in sports. Today, the program is open to both male and female children and volunteers, and has been replicated by other Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country.

Impact Mentoring - an enhanced Community Based and Sports Buddies mentoring program delivered
in partnership with individual schools. This program includes direct collaboration with teachers and school counselors, access to student data and deliberate attention to each child’s educational needs. Depending on the program model (Community Based or Sports Buddies), match activities in this program take place at the school or at locations throughout the community.
Military Mentoring - programs offered in partnership with the US Air Force Academy and Fort Carson Military Base in Colorado Springs. In Falcon Club, Air Force Academy Cadets are matched with children from the community and participate in agency-supervised activities. In Operation Mentor, mentors from the community are matched with children who have a deployed military parent, active duty parent or a parent who has died as a result of combat-related duty. Matches in this program engage in activities in the community or provided by

IMPACT Youth Outcomes Survey
Big Brothers Big Sisters uses the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a nationally-validated survey that relies on pre and post-test methodology to track outcomes in the following areas: social acceptance (relationships with peers), scholastic competency (confidence in school abilities), educational expectations (high school graduation and college attendance), grades, parental trust, attitudes toward high risk behavior (drugs, alcohol, violence), and presence of a special, non-parent/guardian adult. Our Program Specialists administer this survey to each child before he/she is matched with a mentor and again at annual increments.
Of the children in our programs who completed a follow-up survey in 2013:
97% had positive outcomes in five of the seven outcome areas.
87% had positive outcomes in six of seven outcome areas.
Our goal was for at least 70% of children to maintain or improve in specific outcome areas related to social competence, educational success, and risky or delinquent behavior. Results for specific outcome areas include:

Maintained or improved in the area of “Social Acceptance”, which is linked to school achievement, improved conduct and a lower likelihood of dropping out of school.

Additionally, across all youth surveyed, results showed statistically significant improvement in all four of the outcome areas listed above, with the largest gains in Social Acceptance, Scholastic Competency and Educational Expectations.

SCHOOL DATA Big Brothers Big SIsters of Colorado partners with five school distrcits to analyze data as it pertains to attendance, behavior and grades for children receving one-to-one mentoring in our programs. Below is a snapshot of our success.

RUNNING EVENT Toni Taddonio of the Taddonio Family Foundation and Mile Hi Foods hosted over 20 Sports Buddies matches for a running and nutrition event. Each Little received a brand new pair of running shoes to kick off their love of exercise. The event also included an interactive presentation by a Children’s Hospital nutritionist, instruction on running technique from a number of experienced runners, and a one-mile run. As Littles crossed the finish line, each received medals and post-race snacks.

Big Shots Awards Dinner – May 1st, 2013
200 of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado’s most staunch supporters and award recipients attended our annual Big Shots dinner. This fundraiser and awards ceremony was hosted at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Denver on May 1st, 2013. This exclusive event celebrated our impact with a multi-course gourmet meal, a vibrant silent auction, and awards ceremony honoring the youth, volunteers, staff and corporate sponsors of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Shots generated nearly $40,000 in net revenue to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado’s one-to-one mentoring programs.
Sanctuary Golf Classic – August 14th, 2013
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado was proud to partner with REMAX, LLC and Bank of America Merrill Lynch to host our 3rd Annual Golf Classic at Sanctuary Golf Course. With 120 golfers and 25 businesses participating, this event generated nearly $150,000 in net revenue to support Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring programs throughout the Metro Denver and Pikes Peak regions. We are incredibly thankful to our generous sponsors for this event including Bank of America, Stanek Constructors, GTRI and Xcel Energy.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake – October 21st – November 4th, 2013
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado raised over $125,000 during its Annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser. During October and November over 400 donors raised money online and through their workplaces to support one-to-one mentoring in Colorado. Bowl For Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters signature fundraising event of the year and is celebrated by Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country. We would like to thank our Presenting Sponsor, SportClips, Title Sponsors, EKS&H and Xcel Energy, as well as other generous sponsors Husch Blackwell Sanders LLP, Paragon Consulting and Century Link.
Community supporters throughout the region host events for our benefit. Throughout the course of the year a number of fun and rewarding events generate many new friends and financial assistance. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado and Denver Broncos Cornerback, Chris Harris Jr. team up for BIG impact for Colorado’s kids. Throughout his football career, Chris Harris, Jr. has consistently found himself playing the role of the underdog. Whether it was for his size or the fact that he went undrafted after a successful college career with a non-competitive team, the odds have not always been in Chris’ favor. But no matter how difficult things got, the person that mattered most always knew that Chris was destined for success – Chris himself. But Chris acknowledges that he never would have been able to live his dream without people along the way that believed in him as much as he believed in himself. This background is a big reason why Chris founded the Chris Harris Jr. Foundation. There are thousands of children in Denver and across the country who are also underdogs, and the Chris Harris Jr. Foundation is Chris’s way of helping those kids rise above their circumstances and strive for greatness. For Chris, every underdog deserves a shot at success. Chris and his wife, Leah, are very active at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado and in 2013 they sponsored a number of great events for our kids. The goal of the Chris Harris, Jr. Student Success Challenge was to motivate kids to make pledges about how they will approach school, chores, physical fitness and community service. Further, Chris and Leah gave away Thanksgiving food baskets to 100 families in the program. “Working with Chris Harris Jr. and his Foundation has been an incredible partnership for us,” Dave Ryan, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters said. “Our Littles are inspired by Chris and always enjoy spending time with him. We could not be more grateful for his support.”

LETTER FROM GRANDMA To Whom It May Concern, I would like to take the time to recognize an organization that epitomizes the word mentoring. I am speaking of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Colorado. Several years ago I was a single grandparent raising a lonely, terribly sad little boy, my grandson Trinity. He had suffered many losses in his young life and had trust issues with adults. Trinity was truly struggling in every aspect of his life: at school, at home, and with his peers. I was feeling hopeless. I was afraid for Trinity and devastated by his sadness and disconnected state. That is when I reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. Everyone I dealt with during the process of getting Trinity matched with his “Big” was very kind and compassionate. I knew early on that by enrolling Trinity I had made a choice that would change his life in enormous ways. After the call to Big Brothers Big Sisters it took a while to get Trinity his match due to the extensive work that went into finding him a mentor who would build a long term, trusting, safe relationship with him. But finally Trinity was matched with a man named Mittar. Trinity and Mittar began to spend quality time together several times a month. I noticed positive changes that began early on in the relationship and continue to this day. Trinity began to do better in school. His relationships within his family improved. He gained the confidence to reach out for friendships within his peer group. He began to trust people again. I would like to say that Mittar, and all men and women who volunteer for this wonderful organization truly are heroes. I will never be able to thank Trinity’s Big Brother Mittar enough for all the positive ways he has affected this young boy’s life but I will try. Thank you Mittar for volunteering, for showing up, for putting in the time, and for changing Trinity’s life. You will always be our hero. Love,

Little Sister Wins Scholarship Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado was proud to announce Little Sister Andrea was awarded a four-year college scholarship through the generosity of the Annexstad Family Foundation in partnership with the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Annexstad Family Foundation was established by Al Annexstad, Chairman of Minnesota- based Federated Insurance Companies, and his wife Cathy. The foundation’s mission is to provide financial support for youth who have been served by the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and wish to pursue an undergraduate degree as free from debt as possible at one of forty-five selected colleges and universities across the nation. In benefitting from a formative mentoring experience, Annexstad scholars demonstrate high moral character, personal resilience and academic achievement worthy of a college experience. It is an honor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado to be associated with such a generous and philanthropic organization as the Annexstad Family Foundation through which we can continue to impact the lives of young people and build the future of our communities.
