NKorea halts nuclear, ICBM missile tests
<< cont. from front page... the North’s state media says, ahead of planned summits with South Korea and the United States. North Korean leader Kim Jongun said his country no longer needed to conduct nuclear tests or intercontinental ballistic missile tests because it had completed its goal of developing nuclear weapons, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. North Korea said that to create an “international environment favourable” for its economy, it would “facilitate close contact and active dialogue” with neighbouring countries and the international community. It was the first time Kim directly addressed his position on North Korea’s nuclear weapons programmes ahead of planned summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in next week and with US President Donald Trump in late May or early June. Trump welcomed the statement and said he looked forward to a summit with Kim. “North Korea has agreed to suspend all Nuclear Tests and close up a major test site. This is very good news for North Korea and the World - big progress! Look forward to our Summit,” Trump said on Twitter. “Progress being made for all!” he said in a later tweet. South Korea said the North’s decision signified “meaningful” progress toward denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and would create favourable conditions for successful meetings with it and the United States. China, North Korea’s sole major ally which has nevertheless been
frustrated by its defiant development of weapons, welcomed the announcement saying it would ease tension and promote denuclearisation. “The Chinese side believes that North Korea’s decision will help ameliorate the situation on the peninsula,” a foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, said in a statement. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also welcomed the North Korean statement but said it must lead to action. “What’s important is that this leads to complete, verifiable denuclearisation. I want to emphasise this,” Abe told reporters. The United States, Japan and South Korea have historically been the main targets of North Korea’s anger. “We’re all looking for evidence that Kim is really serious about negotiations, and announcements like this certainly suggest he is, and that he is trying to make clear to the world that he is,” said David Wright, co-director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. North Korea has said its nuclear and missile programs are necessary deterrents against US hostility. It conducted numerous missile tests with the aim of being able to hit the United States with a nuclear bomb. The tests and escalating rhetoric between Trump and Kim raised fears of war until, in a New Year’s speech, the North Korean leader called for reduced military tensions.

rince Harry and Meghan Markle will join Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at a London reception ahead of the Invictus Games in Sydney later this year. Harry and his bride-to-be will meet servicemen and women from both Britain and Australia, some of whom have previously competed in the international sporting event. The couple will also learn more about preparations for this year’s games at the reception hosted by Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy at Australia House on Saturday. More than 500 competitors - made up of sick and injured military and veterans - from 18 nations are expected to compete at the Invictus Games in Sydney between October 20 and 27. It is expected Harry, who is patron of the Invictus Games Foundation which oversees the delivery of
the tournament, will travel to Australia for the event with Ms Markle, who will by then be his wife. When Toronto hosted the Paralympic-style event last year the former Suits star, who at the time was living and working in the city, attended the opening and closing ceremonies and visited competitors with Harry.

VIC BAR GETS STOLEN FOO FIGHTERS GIFT BACK
I
t’s times like these for a Melbourne bar owner who used social media to track down a stolen mirror gifted to him by American rockers the Foo Fighters, using the band’s lyrics. Cherry Bar owner James Young took to Facebook to reveal the mirror’s theft at the weekend, sharing footage of the alleged thieves. “We ask for the... Best Of You,” Mr Young said, referencing the band’s 2005 hit. “In...Times Like These. “Get our Foo Fighters’ mirror back and be.... My Hero.”
Mr Young gave the poachers a deadline to return the mirror or he would hand over their full contact details to police. It would be no mean feat, he suggested, given they were filmed on CCTV and used their credit card to buy a round of four pints. “We would implore these guys to...take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror, and then return the mirror,” Mr Young pleaded. An Adelaide man fessed up to the crime on Wednesday and said he would mail the mirror back. Mr Young said getting the mirror back was, “simply the best, the best, the best.” Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl gifted the mirror to the bar when the band toured the country in January and the band had since offered to replace it after its theft.

Mysterious flesh-eating bug affecting Vic
A
mysterious and “nasty” flesh-eating bug is spreading at unprecedented levels in Victoria, and experts don’t know how to stop it. Researchers are appealing for government funding so they can figure out how to contain the bacteria, which causes a disease called Buruli ulcer. Most commonly found in tropical Africa and usually associated with stagnant water, it can have devastating impacts on sufferers, including long-term disability and deformity. Cases have been reported in the Daintree and, less commonly, the Northern Territory, NSW and Western Australia. But most are from Victoria where there’s a worsening epidemic, including 182 new cases in 2016, 275 in 2017 and 30 so far in 2018. There were fewer than 100 cases in 2012. “It’s pretty much tripled over the last five or six years,” Victoria’s deputy chief health officer Brett Sutton told reporters on Monday. Cases are also becoming more severe and occurring in new areas, but efforts to control the outbreak have been thwarted because it’s not known how humans become infected, a study published in The Medical Journal of Australia says.

Photo: A supplied image obtained Monday, April 16, 2018 of a severe Mycobacterium ulcerans lesion on the knee of an 11-year-old boy. A flesh-eating bug which causes an infectious disease called Buruli ulcer is on the rise in regional Victoria and researchers don’t know how it’s spreading.
Native and domestic animals, including dogs, cats, possums and koalas, have all developed the disease, but it’s unknown whether they spread it. “As a community, we are facing a rapidly worsening epidemic of a severe disease without knowing how to prevent it,” researchers said in the report, appealing to all levels of government for urgent funding. The federal government has so far provided $2.4 million and the chief medical officer will work with Victorian authorities on new research strategies, a spokesman for Health Minister Greg Hunt said. Victoria has provided close to $1 million over the past decade, with $150,000 going toward current work, including as analysis of possum faeces and testing of mosquitoes, which have been shown to contain the bacteria. The state’s health department and researchers have also applied for a grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council and will contribute $250,000 if it is successful. “Sometimes it’s seen as a Victorian issue, but it’s also happened in the Daintree,” Dr Sutton said, urging the council to consider the application. “The things we can develop here in Victoria out of research have implications more broadly.” Most cases are occurring on the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas, but there is a risk the “nasty disease” could spread to other coastal areas, possibly through possum faeces, Dr Sutton said. The infection seems to happen more in warmer months and bites or trauma to the skin may play a role. It can take anywhere from four to six months after exposure for a person to display symptoms, which may start as a red, raised area. The ulcer can be treated with antibiotics, but patients end up paying about $14,000 each, because the drugs are not covered by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and many sufferers also require plastic surgery.

NASA SPACECRAFT TO PROWL FOR PLANETS
N
ASA's newest planet hunter will prowl for planets around the closest, brightest stars. The newfound worlds found by the Tess spacecraft eventually will become prime targets for future telescopes looking to tease out any signs of life. It will be the most extensive survey of its kind from orbit. Scientists expect Tess to find thousands of exoplanets - the term for planets outside our solar system. “All astronomers for centuries to come are really going to focus on these objects,” said the mission's chief scientist George Ricker of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “This is really a mission for the ages.” NASA's astrophysics director, Paul Hertz, said missions like Tess will help answer whether we're alone - or just lucky enough to have “the best prime real estate in the galaxy.” Tess - short for Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite - is the heir apparent to the Kepler
Space Telescope , the pioneer of planetary census. Kepler's fuel tank is running precariously low after nine years of flight, and NASA expects it to shut down within months. The exoplanet count, from all observatories in space and on Earth over the past couple of decades, stands at more than 3700 confirmed with 4500 on the strong contender list. About 50 are believed to potentially habitable. They have the right size and the right orbit of their star to support surface water and, at least theoretically, to support life. Most of the Kepler-identified planets are so far away that it would take monster-size telescopes to examine them more. So astronomers want to focus on stars that are vastly brighter and closer to home - close enough for NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope to scrutinise the atmospheres of planets lurking in their sun’s shadows. MIT's Sara Seager, an astrophysicist who has dedicated her life to finding

another Earth, imagines water worlds waiting to be explored. Perhaps hot super Earths with lakes of liquid lava. Maybe even rocky or icy planets with thin atmospheres reminiscent of Earth. “It's not “Interstellar” or “Arrival.” Not yet anyway,” she said, referring to the recent hit science-fiction films. The total mission price tag for Tess is $US337 million ($A435 million). The 362kg Tess will ride a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Its eventual orbit of
Earth will stretch all the way to the orbit of the moon. Tess’ four cameras will zoom in on red dwarf stars in our cosmic backyard. A planet should cause a slight, brief dip in its star's brightness as it passes right in front. Tess will detect any such blips. Scientists like to think robotic explorers would be launched from Earth for closer inspections to search for life, though the technology for interstellar travel has yet to be developed.

died, aged 86. The Royal Australian Mint announced on Thursday the Geelong-born goldsmith, silversmith and artist died peacefully a week ago. Devlin won a competition to design Australia’s decimal currency in 1964, which was released in 1966, giving prominence to the nation’s iconic wildlife. He designed every Australian coin in circulation, with the exception of the $2 which was created by Horst Hahne. At 13, Devlin began studying at Geelong’s Gordon Institute of Technology, before going on to study gold and silversmithing at the Prahran Institute of Art in Melbourne. He was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London and the Harkness Fellowship, which took him to New York’s Columbia University, before returning to Australia in 1962. Two years later, he won the competition to design Australia’s first decimal coins.
including the UK and Singapore. Royal Australian Mint chief executive Ross MacDiarmid said many of Devlin’s original plasters and sketches are in the national coin collection, with an exhibition honouring his work last year. “The Mint pays tribute to Stuart Devlin AO CMG, a passionate and prolific designer, goldsmith and silversmith, whose legacy is enduring,” Mr MacDiarmid said in a statement. Devlin also designed medals, jewellery, decorative table wear, furniture, interiors and architecture.

A
n 83-year-old man convicted of a deadly 1989 serial bombing spree has been executed in Alabama becoming the oldest known person put to death in the modern era of United States capital punishment. Walter Moody was put to death by lethal injection at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, the state’s governor said on Thursday. It was the eighth execution this year in the United States. Moody replaced John Nixon, who was 77 when put to death in December 2005 in Mississippi, as the oldest person executed since the USs Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, which monitors US capital punishment. Moody was convicted of mailing a bomb in 1989 that
killed US Circuit Court Judge Robert Vance, 58, and another that killed Georgia civil rights attorney Robert Robinson. Prosecutors have said Moody sent the bomb to the judge in anger over a 1972 bomb conviction that Moody felt derailed his career and sent another to the civil rights lawyer to confuse investigators. The execution had been scheduled for 6pm (local time) Thursday but was delayed while the court considered final appeals. Lawyers for Moody asked the Supreme Court to spare Moody’s life based on his transfer from the federal court system to Alabama’s but this application failed.

HUNT FOR EXPLORER’S SHIP IN ANTARCTIC
VIC WOMAN TAKES $1M LOTTO TICKET TO BED
W
ith a winning Lotto ticket beneath her pillow a Melbourne woman shouldn’t have had a worry in the world, but still couldn’t sleep a wink. For two nights the giddy Ferntree Gully woman kept her unregistered division one TattsLotto ticket - one of two winning entries worth a guaranteed $1 million - safe by snuggling up with it in bed alongside her equally-excited husband. “I’ve slept with the ticket beside me. We just went to bed and couldn’t sleep. I’ve been awake for two nights thinking ‘oh my God’,” the anonymous woman said on Friday, adding she’ll use the windfall to pay off debts and pass some on to her kids.

esearchers hope to find the lost ship of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton when they set off on a major international scientific expedition next year. Led by scientists at Cambridge University’s Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), the team hopes to locate the Endurance, which has lain at the bottom of the Weddell Sea since 1915. Slated for 2019, the scientific mission to investigate the Larsen C Ice Shelf will also search for the wreck 3000m down. The group, which includes researchers from universities in South Africa and New Zealand, will be the first to use autonomous underwater vehicles to scan the seabed for the ship’s remains.
SPRI’s director, Professor Julian Dowdeswell, chief scientist of the Weddell Sea Expedition 2019, told The Times that the Agulhas II expedition ship would be put to the test by the conditions. He said: “Whatever ship you have, it’s possible it won't get there. It could be a better or worse sea ice year, so everybody is going into this with their eyes open.” Shackleton’s attempt to cross Antarctica began in 1914. After the vessel became trapped in ice for 10 months and then sank, the explorer and his crew survived for six months before reaching uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and five other men then set off to seek help at a whaling station on the island of South Georgia, with their

VIC GRANDPA JAILED FOR
MOLESTING CHILD
A
n elderly man has been jailed for molesting his “favourite grantdchild” when he babysat her more than a decade ago in regional Victoria. The 83-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, molested the girl when she was aged five or six in 2006. A jury found him guilty of four counts of indecent acts and one charge of sexual penetration of a child under 16. The County Court of Victoria was told on Monday the man molested his step-grandchild on two occasions while her family were at school or working, and her grandmother was volunteering. When interviewed by police, the man said he “could not remember” the incidents and any inappropriate touching would have happened “inadvertently”. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the victim said her family “fell apart” after she told them what happened. She said her “loved grandmother” sided with her husband. “This makes me feel like everything was my fault and I made my family fall apart,” she said. “Because of this I lost my grandmother.” The young woman said she had attempted suicide, felt “self-disgust” and suffered panic attacks. The man’s wife was present in court to support him during the sentencing, attempting to reach out to touch him in the dock before he was escorted from the court. “The actions were a gross breach of trust, aggravated by the fact they occurred on a child under the age of 10, and you have pleaded not guilty to the charges,” the judge said, while sentencing. “The breach of trust was a severe one - you having been a grandfather figure to the child all of her life.” The man was sentenced to seven years’ in jail and will be eligible for parole in four-and-ahalf years. AUSTRALIAN YOUTUBE COMEDY AIRS ON NETFLIX R
yan Chamley has never been convinced that the customer is always right. Having spent years working in retail, the Geelong man had enough grievances and observations to write a book. Instead, he wrote a script. “It was the first long-form thing I'd written and I was quite nervous to show anybody,” Chamley said. “The overarching theme of ‘the customer is always right’ was something I always struggled with.” So Chamley, inspired by his time working on shop floors, put together a 45-page script. “I thought it was quite funny and that I'd managed to captured the essence of retail,” he said. With very few resources, Chamley found a shop in Geelong to film a pilot for his new series, Rostered On. He assembled cast and crew and set up a fictional electrical goods store, Electroworld, where the action of the series
takes place. It features annoying customers, alpha-male salesmen and incompetent managers. With very little in the way of resources, and no external funding, Chamley and his business partner Stu Ross started to build the anticipation for the show via social media. “We made little clips that looked like comedy sketches that people could relate to about the work place and there was one clip that got about three million views organically,” he said. The pilot became such a hit online, they decided to make a whole series. “It was a real team effort and we had to build our own store from broken TVs and stuff we got from cash converters and managed to pull off a season,” he said. More clips were released before the series aired, racking up a massive 250 million views across Facebook and YouTube. “It went truly viral and when it was time to release the season
there was anticipation and we had 300,000 Facebook fans ready to go,” he said. The first season of the show has now been picked up by Netflix, which will be airing it in full. Chamley and his colleagues have started working on season two. Ruby Entertainment, the production company behind hit comedy Kath & Kim, have also come on board for the second season. “They basically let me get down to work and write and do the creative stuff and they take care of the business side of things,” he said. Chamley hopes his success story will motivate other aspiring directors to go and make their own projects. “I'm really hoping other filmmakers will be inspired just to get out there and do it themselves,” he said. “If we can do it anyone can.” * Rostered On is available on Netflix.
GREYHOUNDS TO SHAKE MUZZLES IN VICTORIA
G
reyhounds are more likely to find furr-ever homes in Victoria after reforms allowing them to go without muzzles. Non-racing dogs can ditch the muzzle in public from January 1, the state government has announced. The change is part of a new code of practice developed after the 2015 live-baiting scandal. “We’re striking the right
balance between welfare for racing greyhounds, a strong industry and dogs that are well suited to become muchloved pets in their retirement,” Agricultural Minister Jaala Pulford said in a statement on Monday. The removal of muzzles will improve the breed’s image and increase adoption rates, RSPCA Victoria says. Currently, a non-muzzled
greyhound will find a home in under a fortnight, while those forced to wear the device may not be adopted for more than 40 days.

Lawsuit against Facebook over face tagging
A
US federal judge has ruled that Facebook must face a class action lawsuit alleging that the social network unlawfully used a facial recognition process on photos without user permission. The ruling adds to the privacy woes that have been mounting against Facebook for weeks, since it was disclosed that the personal information of millions of users was harvested by the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. US District Judge James Donato ruled in San Francisco federal court that a class action was the most efficient way to resolve the dispute over facial templates. Facebook said it was reviewing the ruling. “We continue to believe the case has no merit and will defend ourselves vigorously,” the company said in a statement.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached for comment. Facebook users sued in 2015, alleging violations of an Illinois state law about the privacy of biometric information. The class will consist of Facebook users in Illinois for whom Facebook created and stored facial recognition algorithms after June 7, 2011, Donato ruled. That is the date when Facebook launched “Tag Suggestions,” a feature that suggests people to tag after a Facebook user uploads a photo. In the US court system, certification of a class is typically a major hurdle that plaintiffs in proposed class actions need to overcome before reaching a possible settlement or trial. PRISONERS TRAIN CATS TO SMUGGLE PHONES
S
an Jose Costa Rican criminals are training cats to smuggle mobile phones into prisons. This week, guards of the large La Reforma prison in north-eastern Alajuela province found a small cat carrying a bag containing a mobile phone, a charger, a spare battery and headphones, the daily La Nacion reported on Tuesday. The bag had been tied to the animal’s back. Nearly a month ago, another cat was found carrying two mobile phones and two batteries. Inmates use the mobile phones to organise criminal activities outside
prison, justice ministry officials were quoted as saying. Prison authorities are demanding that mobile phone networks be blocked inside jails.
safeguards for users as it complies with new European rules designed to make it easier for consumers to give and withdraw consent for the use of their data. Facial recognition technology has been used in most parts of the world for six years, but was initially removed in the EU in 2012 following protests from regulators and privacy advocates. It will now be offered as an opt-in feature in Europe ahead of the rollout of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), new EU data privacy laws which give users more control over how their information is used. Facebook’s face recognition technology uses software that create a “template” of a user’s face based on other images they are tagged in, which is then used to make tagging suggestions in other photos.
The tool is one of several measures users will be asked to manage as part of new privacy features - as well as whether they want adverts shown to them based on data from Facebook partners and if they want political, religious and relationship information on their profile shared. Users will have the opportunity to select an “accept and continue” option to automatically agree to Facebook’s settings - including turning on face recognition - or select a “manage data setting” option where they can confirm they would like the feature turned off. The move comes at a tense time for the company, which is already at the centre of a data privacy scandal linked to political research firm Cambridge Analytica.

Cyber Security Minister Angus Taylor said despite the significant number of organisations affected, there was no indication Australian information had been compromised. “Commercially available routers were used as a point of entry, demonstrating that every connected device is vulnerable to malicious activity,” Mr Taylor said. “This attempt by Russia is a sharp reminder that Australian businesses and individuals are constantly targeted by malicious
state and non-state actors, and we must maintain rigorous cyber security practices.” Mr Taylor, who is in the United States meeting government officials to discuss cyber security, said it was crucial Canberra worked with Washington to build defences against attacks. Neither minister went as far as US and UK authorities who said the attack was the work of “Russian state-sponsored cyber actors”. The Kremlin has previously denied any involvement in directing cyber attacks. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Australia needed to redouble efforts to make sure government institutions and big and small businesses were protected from the scourge of hacking. “We cannot take our cyber security for granted,” he told reporters in Cairns.

Germany pushes for electric car technology
G
ermany’s Economy Minister Peter Altmaier says the country’s automotive industry must invest heavily in electric car technology and develop battery production facilities in Europe to keep up with global competitors. Altmaier told Germany’s masscirculation Bild newspaper that the carmakers need to invest high “two-digit billion amounts” in electric car technology, saying he did not understand why the firms had hesitated for so long. Investments were also needed in battery production, given expected demand for many millions of electric batteries that could help firms earn good money. “Otherwise we’ll have to accept that a large part of the added
value will be produced in Asia or the United States, instead of here with us,” he said. The German car industry, which accounts for some 800,000 jobs in Europe’s biggest economy, is struggling with a global backlash against diesel cars after Volkswagen admitted in 2015 that it had cheated US exhaust tests. To help reduce pollution levels and avoid a total ban on diesel vehicles, VW, Daimler and others have stepped up development of electric cars. The new German coalition government plans to ease the tax burden on drivers of electric vehicles, provide at least an additional 100,000 charge points across the country and subsidise car-sharing to push a shift to greener transportation.
There are also plans to provide funding for research into autonomous driving technology and support the establishment of battery cell production in Germany. Altmaier said German carmakers needed to develop a model that had at least the range of a Tesla but costs less, and should work on developing an information technology platform for self-driving cars that was the best in the world. “The first safe self-driving cars must operate with German technology,” he said. The conservative minister said it was imperative to secure the hundreds of thousands of jobs now supporting the car and supplier industries.
Airlines back global registry for drones
T
he world’s airlines are backing the development of a United Nations-led global registry for drones, as a rise in near collisions by unmanned aircraft and commercial jets fuels safety concerns. The International Air Transport Association backs efforts by the United Nations’ aviation agency to develop such a registry, which could also help track the number of incidents involving drones and jets, says Rob Eagles, IATA’s director of air traffic management infrastructure. IATA would consider collaborating with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to use the registry for data analysis to improve safety. ICAO is developing the registry as part of broader efforts to come up with common rules for flying and tracking unmanned aircraft. Airlines and airport operators are looking to drone registries, geo-fencing technology and stiffer penalties for operating drones near airports. They hope these steps will ensure flying remains safe as hobbyists and companies like Amazon.com use more drones. In Britain, the number of near misses between drones and aircraft more than tripled between 2015 and 2017, with 92 incidents recorded last year, according to the UK Airprox Board. Air New Zealand Ltd said last month a flight from Tokyo with 278 passengers and crew on board encountered a drone estimated to be just five metres away from the Boeing 777-200 jet during its descent into Auckland. A single registry would create a one-stop-shop that would allow law enforcement to remotely identify and track unmanned aircraft, along with their operator and owner. “The intention at present is to merge this activity into the ICAO registry for manned aircraft, so that the sector has a single consolidated registry network,” said ICAO spokesman Anthony Philbin by email. The manned aircraft registry is operated by Aviareto, a joint venture between Switzerlandbased aviation technology group SITA and the Irish government.
Shark Tank Stars Warn of Bitcoin Scam N etwork Ten is still fending off false claims its Shark Tank stars have endorsed a bitcoin trading platform that has been reported to federal authorities. The claims were carried in a fake story saying Shark Tank investor and Boost Juice founder Janine Allis profited from the platform "within 3 minutes" of it being presented on an episode of the show. It also falsely claimed fellow Shark Tank investor and entrepreneur Steve Baxter bid $2.5 million for a 20 per cent share of the business. The item, with false quotes, first appeared in early March and Baxter and Allis both posted warnings on their personal Twitter accounts denying the claims. The platform never appeared on Shark Tank, nor do its stars endorse it. But despite the warnings another version of the claims

he national broadband network is still not meeting consumer expectations with complaints continuing to rise as more homes and businesses connect to the network, the industry ombudsman says. More than a quarter of the 84,914 complaints by residential and business customers to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman were about services delivered over the NBN. The majority of NBN complaints made in the six months to December 31 were in regards to service quality, with customers unsatisfied by provider responses, while other issues were around connection delays. NBN Co says of the 22,827 complaints to the ombudsman about retail services delivered over the network, it received only 1052 complaints to resolve - a decline of 16 per cent compared to the same corresponding period. Ombudsman Judi Jones said
while the increase in NBN complaints is not surprising given the growing number of connections to the network, the rise is still concerning and indicates that the service is still not meeting expectations. “It is really important that the retailer listens and puts themselves in the consumer’s shoes and looks at it from the consumer’s perspective, figures out what to do and then does what they say they are going to do,” Ms Jones told AAP. BON JOVI INTO ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME B
on Jovi has reunited with former members Richie Sambora and Alec John Such for a powerful performance as the band earned a spot in the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jon Bon Jovi, Sambora and Such were joined by current bandmates David Bryan, Tico Torres and Hugh McDonald at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, on Saturday night where the Rock Hall is based. They performed crowd favourites like You Give Love a Bad Name and It’s My Life. Sambora left Bon Jovi in 2013 and Such in 1994. Each of the members spoke onstage, giving thanks for the honour and telling old stories about the New Jersey band. They all hugged as a group afterward. Jon Bon Jovi said he has been writing his Rock Hall speech for years. “Some days I write the ‘Thank you’ speech, sometimes I write the ‘(Expletive) you’ speech,” he said. “In the end, it’s all about time. It took a lot of people to get us here tonight.”
They were inducted by Howard Stern, who provided many laughs at the event. He even sang some of Wanted Dead or Alive, getting the audience to join in. Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums. The 33rd annual Rock Hall ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at 66. The Killers earned a loud applause from the audience when they started performing American Girl, then transitioning to Free Fallin’. “Pay some rock ‘n’ roll respect ... to the eternal Tom Petty,” frontman Brandon Flowers said, as photos of Petty were displayed in the background. The Carts and four first-time nominees, including Nina Simone, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, also are being inducted as the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class. English brothers Mark and David Knopfler from Dire Straits, didn’t attend the event, according to bassist John Illsley who said of Mark , “It just didn’t appeal to him, and I appealed to him on several occasions”.

his 2017 album “DAMN.” and was also the first music winner in the 100-year history of the Pulitzers to come from outside of the world of classical or jazz. Lamar’s fusion of jazz, poetry and blues with social themes and love songs has made him one of the most innovative rappers of his generation. The Pulitzer board on Monday hailed “DAMN.,” which was released in April 2017, as “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern AfricanAmerican life.” Previous Pulitzer music winners include jazz musicians Wynton Marsalis and Ornette Coleman. “DAMN.,” Lamar’s fourth album alifornia rapper Kendrick deals with religion, love, personal struggles and racial politics. But the album failed to win the top Grammy prize - album of the year - in what was seen as a snub by music industry voters for the rap genre despite its rising popularity. Only two hip-hop albums have ever won the Grammy for album of the year: Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in 1999 and Outkast’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”
in 2004. Lamar was born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, the home of hip-hop pioneers NWA, and started making music as a 16-year-old. He also produced the soundtrack for the 2018 superhero box-office hit film “Black Panther,” and performed the lead single “Pray For Me” with The Weeknd.
COSBY ACCUSER ‘TOO SCARED TO TELL ANYONE’
T

It was the second time that accuser Andrea Constand, 45, confronted the 80-year-old entertainer in the suburban Philadelphia courtroom. Cosby stood trial last year on the charges, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict. Constand is one of about 50
women who have accused Cosby of sexually assaulting them in attacks dating back decades. Hers is the only one recent enough to be the subject of criminal prosecution. Constand, who worked at Cosby’s alma mater Temple University at the time of the alleged attack, said she went to Cosby’s house to discuss a potential career change. Cosby gave her three blue pills that he said would relax her.

Jamie Oliver’s Aust business hits trouble
J
amie Oliver’s business woes have deepened with his Australian restaurant group falling into voluntary administration. The celebrity chef’s UK restaurants have been in financial strife amid rising costs and consumer caution, partly as a result of the Brexit vote, and his Canberra venue has now been closed. The Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group Australia, which operated six Jamie’s Italian restaurants in Australia, slipped into voluntary administration on Monday. The Canberra restaurant was closed down, while Brisbanebased Hallmark Group will take over the management of Jamie’s Italian restaurants in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Parramatta and Adelaide. A statement by his restaurant group said Australia was still one of his best performing international markets.
“We’ll be working closely with Jamie and the UK team, staff and local suppliers to keep driving the business forward and delivering exceptional experiences across the country,” a statement by Hallmark said. Hallmark, the owner of Brisbane Irish bar Finn McCools, said it was also looking at new suitable locations to expand the Jamie’s Italian chain. Mr Oliver, the face of Woolworths’ advertising campaigns and who is credited with helping turn around British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, bought the Australian Jamie’s Italian restaurants from receivers of the failed Keystone Group in March 2017. In January, 12 of his UK restaurants closed despite Mr Oliver having reportedly pumped his own money into the business to keep it going.

New ale to mark Harry and Meghan wedding
F
ans of the royals with a taste for beer will be able to celebrate Prince Harry and fiancee Meghan Markle’s wedding day with a special ale brewed in the town where the couple will get married next month. “Harry & Meghan’s Windsor Knot” has been brewed to give the traditional British pint a US twist in honour of the nuptials of the transAtlantic couple who will get married at Queen Elizabeth’s Windsor Castle home, west of London, on May 19. “With the authenticity of being brewed here in Windsor in the shadow of Windsor Castle, using local ingredients, it has got a fantastic appeal,” said Will Calvert, 60, one of the directors of Windsor and Eton brewery. According to the brewer, the pale ale is made from barley grown in Windsor’s royal farm, to represent Harry, and combined with hops from
the west coast of America, reflecting Markle’s heritage. It is a sequel to the “Windsor Knot” beer the brewery first made in 2011 to mark the wedding of Prince William, Harry’s elder brother, to wife Kate. That brew was supposed to be on sale for only a couple of months but the brewery said it was so popular that it is still being made and sold today. The town has royal associations that go back centuries and Windsor, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1000 years. Harry and his brother William both attended the nearby exclusive Eton College school which lies on the opposite bank of the River Thames.

Domino’s will now deliver outdoor in US
D
omino’s, which has been bringing pizzas to doorsteps for more than half a century, will now deliver to the great outdoors. The pizza chain says its drivers can meet customers at US beaches, parks and landmarks to hand over pizza, cheesy bread and other food on its menu. In all, Domino’s said it will deliver to 150,000 outdoor locations including under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis; by the Las Vegas welcome sign; or next to a statue of soul singer James Brown in Augusta, Georgia. The locations show up in the company’s app or website as “Domino’s Hotspots.” Delivery is a key part of the company’s business, and it has been aggressive in making it easy to order through tweets, text messages and Amazon’s voice-activated Echo. But competition has grown from other fast-food chains that are offering more delivery options.
McDonald’s has a deal with online service UberEats, and the parent company of KFC and Taco Bell recently teamed up with Grubhub to expand delivery. Domino’s says it tested the service last autumn in Miami, where customers
ordered outside hotels and the zoo. Dennis Maloney, the company’s chief digital officer, wouldn’t say how many deliveries were made during the test, but said it was enough to decide to roll it out nationwide.
Franchisees chose the hotspots, including local dog parks and airports. Drivers will pull up to the curb to meet customers, Domino’s said, and people can tell the app what they’re wearing so they’re easier to spot.
Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016 - Domino’s new robot pizza delivery system. Domino’s joined forces with the global leader in drone deliveries, Flirtey to launch the world’s first commercial drone delivery service in Auckland. New Zealand was chosen as the launch market because its regulations allow easier trials of drones by businesses, Domino’s said.

Titanic first meal menu fetches
$185,000
A
menu for the first meal served on the Titanic has sold for STG100,000 ($A183,500) at auction in the UK. The lunch - including sweetbreads, spring lamb and pastries - was served during
the liner’s sea trials on April 2 in 1912. Second Officer Charles Lightoller, the highest ranking surviving officer from the Titanic, had given the menu to his wife as a souvenir before he left from Southampton on
April 10 in 1912. More than 1500 passengers and crew died when the Titanic struck an iceberg four days later. Among the other items that went under the hammer at Henry Aldridge and Son in Devizes, Wiltshire
was a key to the doomed vessel’s chart room that sold for STG78,000. A third class steward’s badge, which was worn by Thomas Mullin fetched STG57,000. The badge was found with his body. “This menu is one of the most important examples of its type in existence today, simply superb a true blue chip item,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said. “It is from most famous ship in the world, the first meal served on it and owned by its most senior surviving officer.” Titanic was due to leave Belfast for Southampton on April 1, but this was postponed until the following day due to bad weather. Sea trials began at 10am on April 2, with the ship sailing all day and returning to port for some last-minute cargo. The ship was put at dead slow while lunch was served in the main dining saloon. Once the meal was completed, the major stopping test was conducted. It is believed that only one other example of a menu from April 2 survives.

Meet Spike
I enjoy more mature activities, a good game of backgammon and watching reruns of Mash. I’m an active member of The Men’s Shed and like to make relish from my home grown tomatoes. But don’t worry I also engage in doggo pastimes too, give me a hardy squeaky toy and I’m in heaven.
RSPCA NO. 854273

I’m also ready to learn some new tricks to keep my behaviour gentlemanly and polite. My favourite thing would be a forever home all of my own, preferably without little ones or other dogs. Their loud talking interrupts the hilarity of my tv shows! If you choose me, I’ll reward you with a lifetime of love, friendship and classy style. New-generation Ford Fiesta ST hot-hatch
to join Australian Ford Performance line-up in first half of 2019
A
ustralian enthusiasts will be able to buy the new-generation Ford Fiesta ST in 2019. The fun-todrive, dynamic and innovative hot-hatch will arrive in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2019 to join the Australian Ford Performance line-up, which includes the new 2018 Ford Mustang and first-ever Ranger Raptor. The existing Fiesta ST is the winner of numerous motoring awards both around the world and right here in Australia, where it claimed the MOTOR Bang For Your Bucks trophy two years in a rowi. In fact, with 22 awards globally in its debut year, the existing Fiesta ST had earned more honours than any small performance vehicle from Ford ever upon its arrival, since beaten by the latest Ford Focus RS. “There is a strong appetite and passion for the Fiesta ST in our
line-up, and can see the affinity and esteem that Australians have with driving enjoyment of the existing model,” said Ford Australia President and CEO, Graeme Whickman. “Fiesta ST shows the depth of enthusiast models that we’re bringing to Australia, with everything from this hot hatch through to the Ranger Raptor,” said Whickman. The next generation Fiesta ST
is the most compact model in the Ford Performance line-up and has been created to bring driving thrills and involvement like no other. Built in Germany and based on the highly-praised seventhgeneration Fiesta – the current World Rally Champion with Ford Performance partner, UK-based M-Sport – the 2019 Fiesta ST is powered by a 147kWii threecylinder turbocharged engine
from Ford’s award- and racewinning EcoBoost engine line-up, matched exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission. The Fiesta ST is also renowned for its chassis dynamics, with its dynamic ability, driver involvement and point-topoint real-world performance developed even further for the new generation.

BOGUT THE ‘WHOLE PACKAGE’ FOR TRENDING NBL
A
ndrew Bogut’s NBL arrival will stir as much off-court interest as it will on it according to his national coach Andrej Lemanis. The first Australian No.1 NBA draft pick will suit up for the Sydney Kings this year, and his presence is likely to help continue the league’s rise in popularity after some barren years. The 33-year-old won an NBA title with Golden State Warriors in 2015 and still has plenty to offer in the world’s top league, but will instead ply his trade at home for the first time. Andrew Gaze’s team - seventh in an eight-team competition last year - shortened in from $6.50 to $3.50 title favourites after the announcement of the Melbourneborn centre’s signature was made on social media. And while he is expected to dominate the league, current Boomers and Brisbane Bullets coach Andrej Lemanis tipped the outspoken veteran to offer just as much in between his appearances on court. “It’s his presence and notoriety;
he gets attention and eyes on the sport,” Lemanis told AAP. “If you said his name to anyone walking down the street I’d be surprised if they didn’t know who he was. “It ratifies where the league is at and I know we’re already considering where we play that game (against the Kings) because it’s going to be fantastic to see him play live in Australia.” After a Sunday night teaser sent basketball fans into meltdown, an official announcement didn’t come as expected in a sloppy delivery from the Kings on Monday. Currently lodged at NBL head office, the contract is likely to be cleared by Tuesday. Former national coach Brian Goorjian, now based in China, mentored a young Bogut and agreed it was the finest feather in the NBL’s cap. “He’ll help the league; he’ll be good for administration, he knows how to market, promote and he’s great on social media,” Goorjina told Macquarie Sports Radio.
“It’s the whole package.” The NBL has been rejuvenated in recent years by
American-born NBA talent while classy Australian exports David Andersen, Daniel Kickert and Brad Newley are among those lured home by the improved competition under owner Larry Kestelman. But the Bogut announcement has propelled the NBL back into the mainstream sporting conversation and comes as Ben Simmons and Joe Ingles are among seven Australians impressing in the NBA finals. “I’m so excited; the league gained great momentum in the late 80s and early 90s and maybe grew too fast and lost its way,” Goorjian said. “When I left the league in 2005/06 it was really on the decline but everyone outside of Australia is talking about the NBL and Australian basketball. “Everyone wants to know what’s going on here.”
Skipper Smith waiting for Storm NRL offer << cont. from front page...
becoming the next coach of the Storm. Off-contract at the end of the season, the 34-year-old national skipper says he’s not sure if he wants to play on and wants to first hear what the Storm’s plans are for him. There have been reports that Storm coach Craig Bellamy expects Smith to suit up for an 18th season to help guide the club through the expected retirement of superstar fullback Billy Slater, following Cooper Cronk’s departure last off-season. Smith played his 365th NRL game against Brisbane last Friday night and a 12-month deal would likely see him become the first player to notch 400 matches. “I haven’t spoken to the club at all about next year,” Smith
said on Sunday ahead of the Storm’s Anzac Day clash with the Warriors. “Once they are in a position to talk to me about next year or a couple of years, three years - whatever they are thinking - I’m happy to sit down and talk to them about it and express the way I feel about moving forward. “Whether that’s to play or not to play I’m not too sure at the moment and I’d like to see what they are thinking.” Former Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge, a good friend of Smith’s, briefly retired before joining Brisbane this season to help the growth of the young AFL line-up. But he has come under criticism for his form in the struggling club. Smith ruled out staying on
at the Storm in a player-coach role, saying he has no interest in coaching and said he would only stay on if he was the best hooker at the club. “I wouldn’t enjoy being on the field if I wasn’t at my very best and particularly if I knew I was holding a position I could give to someone else like a Brandon Smith, who could come and improve his game as a starting dummy half,” Smith said “It’s a different situation for Hodgey as he’s chasing a role as a coach, where I don’t really see my future in the coaching role - I don’t have any desire to do that at all. “For me it’s about if I’m still playing my very best and can give my best to the team then I’d be happy to stay on and play.”

BRAZIL’S NEYMAR TARGETS MAY 17 FOR RETURN
I Overhead kick my A-League best: Berisha
B
esart Berisha has scored 116 goals in the A-League. But none, he reckons, as good as his 89th-minute elimination final winning strike on Sunday that put Melbourne Victory into the semi-finals. The well-travelled international produced an overhead kick from a Kosta Barbarouses cross to nestle the ball in the corner of the net and win a match that looked certain for extra-time and possibly the dreaded penalty shootout. Berisha hadn’t seen much of the ball until his moment of magic, which he quickly put at the top of his A-League goal list. “I think it is, I personally think (it is my best),” he said. “It was an important goal for us and to score a goal like that you’re double happy. “It’s a goal you don’t score much in your career, probably never. That’s my first one like that. “I’m so happy, it was right at the end and such a difficult game, but so happy to score in the end.” Berisha said he waited until the last possible moment before committing to the overhead kick. He laughed off comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo’s wondergoal against Juventus earlier this month - but said he was inspired by the Portuguese. “There was nothing else possible. To take a touch,
everybody comes and take away the ball,” he said. “The only option because the man was pulling me back to the goal and I was on the back and that was the only option I had. “It was something I did, actually, in training after the (Asian) Champions League game. “The players who didn’t play trained and I did this, I scored in training. “It’s very interesting because I heard Ronaldo did the same.” The 32-year-old Berisha has had his critics this season but his goal was his 14th of the season, from 26 games. Only golden boot winner Bobo and Wanderers frontman Oriol Riera have scored more. Heading into a Big Blue semifinal with Sydney FC on Saturday, the Kosovo international said he was feeling bright. “My confidence is really high,” he said. “You go through tough times, tough moments, but I’ve been through much worse moments. “This is the game, up and downs. “I’m not happy with how the season ended up for us but it’s now about the finals. “This is why I’m so motivated, I love finals. You know that. “I live for this, it’s something special that I don’t take for granted.”
MAN UTD BEAT TOTTENHAM TO REACH CUP FINAL
M
anchester United have inflicted yet more FA Cup semi-final misery on Tottenham Hotspur after recovering from a poor start to win 2-1 at a packed Wembley Stadium. Tottenham, playing on the ground which has been their temporary home all season, got off to a dream start when Dele Alli scored from close range but Alexis Sanchez equalised with a header and Ander Herrera fired
United’s winner midway through the second half. While United can look forward to the prospect of finishing the season with some silverware, Tottenham must pick themselves up after an eighth successive FA Cup semi-final loss. Standing between United and a record-equalling 13th FA Cup triumph will be Chelsea or Southampton, who play on Sunday.
njured Brazil striker Neymar has targeted May 17 for a return to training and vowed to work harder than ever to be ready for this year’s World Cup in Russia. The Paris St Germain player, who became the world’s most expensive footballer when he joined the club from Barcelona in August, had an operation on his foot after being injured in a French league game against Olympique de Marseille on February 25. He has been receiving treatment in Brazil and said he expects to be training exactly a month before the five-times champions play their World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17. “I get my final exam, if I’m not mistaken, on May 17 and then I’ll be free to play,” he told reporters at a news conference in Sao Paulo. “I had an exam last week, it is all perfect, evolving well, so I hope that continues so I can get back as soon as possible...
“I am having treatment every day, and from the moment I start training I am going to work harder than I ever worked because this is a dream that’s coming up, it’s a World Cup. I’ve waited four years for this chance, it’s close and I hope to get there in great shape.” Neymar played for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup but missed the catastrophic 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany through injury. Brazil struggled in the two years immediately after their home World Cup but have since rebounded and go to Russia as joint favourites with bookmakers along with Germany. Neymar, who joined PSG for a fee of 222 million euros, said he was apprehensive about kicking a football again after almost three months out. “I expect to go (to the World Cup) in a better state than before,” he said. “Of course, doubts exist and I feel them too sometimes, but that’s normal for a guy who has had the first surgery of his career. It’s very difficult for me not playing and not training. “I have to work even harder but I am going to have enough time to arrive in form for the World Cup, to prepare. It was horrible getting injured but I am more rested, that’s the upside. We have to see the positive side of things.” After opening their Group E World Cup campaign against Switzerland, Brazil face Costa Rica on June 22 and then Serbia five days later.

f there were any doubts about Patrick Cripps’ ability to lead Carlton, the midfield bull dispelled them with his valiant effort against West Coast. With captain Marc Murphy sidelined with a foot injury, stand-in skipper Cripps attacked the role with gusto in
a brave 10-point AFL loss at the MCG on Saturday. Cripps carried the added leadership responsibility and the Blues’ midfield with aplomb, starring with 34 possessions, eight clearances and 11 tackles. “It was just an outstanding effort ... he’s carrying most of
the load on the ball, isn’t he,” coach Brendon Bolton said of the 23-year-old. “He’s a warrior, he’s a soldier ... we love him. “He’s got an appetite to take this club forward, particularly around the midfield and stoppages.
FYFE STARS AS DOCKERS SINK BULLDOGS
F
remantle skipper Nat Fyfe put on a midfield masterclass for the Dockers who have cruised to a 54-point victory over a hapless Western Bulldogs outfit at Optus Stadium. Fyfe collected a careerhigh 43 disposals, tallied 13 clearances and booted a goal
in on Saturday night’s 16.12 (108) to 8.6.(54) rout in front of 43,056 fans. Goalsneak Michael Walters was dominant with five goals, while ruckman Aaron Sandilands (53 hit-outs) ensured Fremantle easily won the midfield battle. The Bulldogs had shown good
fight over the past fortnight against Essendon and Sydney, but they fell into a heap against the Dockers, who were fielding five first-year players. Ugly errors and bad decisionmaking haunted the Bulldogs. They slump to 1-4 and face a second-straight season without finals action.
HAWKS COACH URGES AFL TO REWARD TACKLERS
H
awthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has urged AFL umpires to clamp down on incorrect disposals, arguing that a lack of reward for tacklers is putting players at greater risk of concussion. Clarkson made the appeal after his side’s 28-point loss to North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday - a game in which the Kangaroos lost both Shaun Higgins and Ed Vickers-Willis to concussion within the same passage of play. A motionless Higgins was taken from the ground on a motorised stretcher and sent to hospital after a nasty third-quarter head collision with Hawthorn’s Ryan Burton. Vickers-Willis was also ruled out for the rest of the game after colliding with Harry Morrison moments later, with both incidents certain to be scrutinised on Monday by AFL match review officer Michael Christian.

est Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff says the team’s “little guys” won’t be expecting silver-spoon service in Sunday’s western derby against Fremantle at Optus Stadium. Eagles ruck duo Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett have dominated rival AFL teams this season, but they have been up against mostly pinch-hitting ruckmen. That will all change on Sunday when they line up against 211cm Dockers ruckman Aaron Sandilands. The 35-year-old has been in hot form this season and tallied 53 hit-outs in last week’s 54-point win over the Bulldogs. Gaff said the team’s midfielders are aware that Naitanui and Lycett won’t be as dominant this week. “I think it’s almost 50-50,” Gaff said of the upcoming ruck battle. “You can’t go into a game against Sandilands thinking you’re going to win 100 per cent of the taps. “It’s that fine line between thinking of your own plans, but also trying to

combat them. “We’ve got two quality ruckmen with Scotty and Nic. If they can give us first hands, it’s up to us little guys to get the job done.” West Coast have won the past five derbies - all by comfortable margins. But Fremantle have emerged strongly this season, winning three of their first five games. West Coast are sitting pretty in top spot with a 4-1 record, but Gaff acknowledged they were a bit off the boil in last week’s 10-point win over Carlton. Gaff said Fremantle’s midfield of Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale and David Mundy would be hard to stop on Sunday. “They’re a quality midfield. They’re well renowned around the AFL as being one of the better midfields in the comps,” Gaff said. “We know the combination between Sandilands and Fyfe is probably one of the more prominent ones in the AFL, so we’re going to spend a lot of time on him. “We know the game is won and lost in the middle. “But we’ve won the last few derbies in a row, so it gives us confidence that we can do the same.” West Coast are hopeful Lewis Jetta (soreness) will be fit to return this week. Fremantle will be without forward Matt Taberner (foot). • • • •
