The media have jumped onboard too as the exciting forward has taken the competition by storm with some breathtaking performances in his debut season. strength and ability to find the goals. The Rising Star favourite, who has played every game this year, took his season goal tally to 21 with another three in Sunday’s 20-point win over Carlton. Quite deservedly, there is a lot of hype around his debut season, but Stephenson has plenty of people in his life who keep him grounded. “I went back to my family home and spent time with them and my close mates from ... continued page 38 >>

ormer Game of Thrones co-stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie have got married with a church service and a celebration at the bride’s ancestral castle in Scotland. The couple and guests arrived for the afternoon service on Saturday at Rayne Church, close to the 900-year-old Wardhill Castle in northeast Scotland, which is owned by Leslie’s family. Harington, wearing a morning suit, and Leslie, in a flowing ivory gown and veil, smiled at members of the public who had gathered outside the church. Guests included the pair’s Game of Thrones co-stars Peter Dinklage, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner and Emilia Clarke. Later the newlyweds were showered with rose petal confetti as they left the church and drove off in a Land Rover festooned with “Just Married” signs to a reception on the castle grounds. Harington and Leslie, who are both 31, met in 2012 on the

set of the HBO fantasy series, where they played a couple as the characters Jon Snow and Ygritte. Leslie left the cast in 2014 and currently stars in US legal drama The Good Fight. The couple announced their engagement with a notice in the Times of London newspaper in September. The bride’s father, Sebastian Leslie, said on Saturday he was “absolutely thrilled” about the wedding. “It’s an absolutely lovely day for us,” he said.

Jarryd Hayne’s rape trial set for 2020

A

ustralian rugby league star Jarryd Hayne’s civil rape trial in California will not be held until 2020. US District Court Judge Lucy Koh set the schedule for the proceedings during a hearing in San Jose, near San Francisco, recently. Hayne and the woman did not attend. Judge Koh set a five-day trial for January 27, 2020. The woman, named in court documents as JV, alleges she was a virgin and heavily intoxicated when she met Hayne through mutual friends at a San Jose bar

in 2015 while he was playing for the San Francisco 49ers’ NFL team. She alleges they had “minimal interaction” at the bar, but caught an Uber to his apartment where he sexually assaulted her. Hayne claimed she “willingly engaged in sexual interaction that did not include sexual intercourse”. JV is seeking “monetary damages”, although the amount has yet to be disclosed. San Jose police, after undertaking their investigation, declined to charge Hayne.

TRUMP ORDERS CREATION OF

‘SPACE FORCE’ << cont. from front page...

“It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,” Trump said recently before a meeting of his National Space Council. “We are going to have the Air Force and we’re going to have the ‘Space Force’. Separate but equal. It is going to be something. So important,” he said later. The US, however, is a member of the Outer Space Treaty, which bars the stationing of weapons of mass destruction in space and only allows for the use of the moon and other celestial bodies for peaceful purposes. Trump also signed a directive on the management of traffic and debris in space. The announcements were his administration’s latest moves to scale up US space exploration. The US wants to send robotic explorers to the moon as soon as next year as a preparatory step towards sending astronauts back there for the first time since 1972, a NASA official said. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is planning a series of lunar missions beginning next year aimed at developing the capacity for a return to the moon, said Cheryl

Warner, a spokeswoman for NASA’s Human Exploration Directorate. NASA will work with private companies, which have not yet been chosen, on the missions, Warner said in a phone interview. In December, Trump signed a directive that he said would enable astronauts to return to the moon and eventually lead a mission to Mars. He ordered the government last month to review regulations on commercial space flights. Americans first landed on the moon in 1969, reaching a goal set by former president John F. Kennedy in 1961 and capping a decade-long space race between Washington and Moscow. Since then, US efforts to explore beyond the Earth’s orbit have largely focused on remote spacecraft that do not have human crew members, though American presidents have repeatedly raised the idea of sending human explorers back to the moon or further. President George W. Bush in 2004 said humans would return to the moon by 2020. His successor, President Barack Obama, said in 2016 the US would send humans to Mars by the 2030s.

REASONS WHY BEER MAY BE GOOD FOR YOU T

homas Jefferson once said: “Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” Though he may not always be right about the temper - ask the bouncers at any nightclub - he may be surprisingly correct about the health claim. We take a look at some of the biggest benefits beer drinking has for your body. 1. It may reduce the risk of heart disease

Perhaps the most proven positive of a well-placed pint: drinking beer is good for your heart. According to a 2012 study published in the European Heart Journal, beverages rich in polyphenols, like beer, have been shown repeatedly to carry substantial cardiovascular benefits, and drinking one half to two pints of beer a day lessens your chance of heart disease by around 25 per cent. 2. It can be good for your longterm memory With an emphasis on ‘longterm’. After a boozy night out, don’t expect to know what you

did or said after your seventh pint of Stella. However, studies suggest that chemicals found in beer can slow the progress of degenerative cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s. Sipping on your beer of choice won’t help you study for your exams, but, decades down the line, it might help you remember which ones you passed.

5. It may help your sight

3. It’s apparently good for your bones

According to a 2013 study, beer contains a high proportion of silicon, a key component of bone construction, in quantities not found in most foods. Products high in hops and barley are particularly effective. 4. It could increase your creativity

Evidence suggests a light tipple increases creativity and outside-the-box-thinking. A 2017 study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition, found participants with a small amount of alcohol in their bloodstream outstripped their sober counterparts in cognitive tests, despite losing, in the

This may sound like alcoholic mysticism but there is evidence to suggest that unlatching a lager might be just as good for your eyes as gulping down a carrot smoothie. According to researchers from Canada, one beer a day releases antioxidants that help to stop the formation of cataracts. Unsurprisingly, there’s a catch: Drinking three or more beers a day reverses this trend, on top of fuzzying your faculties. 6. It could reduces the risk of kidney stones

No one seems entirely sure why beer carries this particular benefit, but a 2013 study suggested that a bottle before bedtime could reduce the risk of

kidney stones by 40 per cent, or even more. Some put it down as a component of hops, others to the increased fluid intake, but all agree that periodic beer drinking is doing your kidneys a kindness. Quaff them into shape at your leisure - just get used to the odd bathroom break.

Boost vitamin D levels at home this winter

O

ne of the more unenjoyable elements of modern life is that we spend so much time cooped up in offices. While we know this can wreak havoc on your posture (and probably doesn’t do much for your mental wellbeing either), you might have a bigger issue to worry about - vitamin D deficiency. In the year 2011-12 the Australian Bureau of Statistics found one in four Australian adults are deficient in vitamin D, which is essential for keeping teeth and bones healthy, regulating mood and improving resistance against winter bugs. The best source of this vital vitamin is getting out in the sunshine; when the sun’s UVB rays hit our skin, a reaction takes place that enables the cells to manufacture it. The problem is, all those hours squirrelling away at your keyboard mean many of us rarely see daylight during the colder months. Booking a two-week holiday to the Bahamas would be ideal, but in reality, few of us have the time or money to jet off so close to Christmas. Regardless, now winter’s almost here, it means fewer sunny days, so you need to be extra-vigilant about getting enough of the good stuff. Here’s how to combat bleaker days and up your vitamin D intake during the chill. BAKE SOME FATTY FISH Next time you’re stuck for ideas for a quick and healthy dinner, head to the fish aisle. Salmon, mackerel, herring, trout and kippers are all brilliant sources

of vitamin D that many of us don’t eat often enough. In fact, just half a fillet of salmon has over 1,000 IU of vitamin D, which is more than the daily recommended allowance for a person (according to government advice, we should all be aiming for 1000 IU in the winter months). Fresh fatty fish also supplies iron, zinc, niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, in addition to a whole host of other nutrients you need for good health. GLUG ON A PINT OF FORTIFIED MILK Got milk? Then get swigging. According to research, an 200ml glass of whole milk contains at least 100 IU of vitamin D, a quarter of your daily optimum vitamin D intake. Not all milk products contain this essential vitamin, so make sure you’re looking out for fortified varieties. ORDER EGGS AT BRUNCH Dippy eggs and soldiers are more than just homely comfort food - they’re also great for, you guessed it, vitamin D. All the goodness in an egg comes from

its yolk, so it’s important to use the whole egg and not just the whites. One egg will give you about 40 IU, which is a brilliant excuse to get stuck into this teatime treat. ADD SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS TO YOUR STIR FRY In a similar way to humans, certain varieties of mushrooms can produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Research has uncovered that shiitake ‘shrooms are the best at mimicking the process. There are thought to be 40 IU in 120 grams of the potent fungi, which might not sound like a huge amount, but when it comes to staying healthy - every little bit helps. TAKE A SUPPLEMENT Let’s face it, we’re all busy people, and one of the easiest ways to win at winter health is to simply take a supplement. Just don’t snack on them like Fruit Pastilles; taking high doses of the vitamin for long periods of time can lead to excessive build up in the body, so keep a close eye on your numbers.

ealth experts are urging residents not to die for fungi after more than two dozen people were hospitalised after eating wild

mushrooms across NSW. There have been 38 cases of mushroom-related hospitalisations across NSW in 2018 to date with 27 taking

place in autumn, which is peak mushrooming season. “Cooler, wetter weather is making good growing conditions for wild mushrooms,” NSW Health’s Dr Benjamin Scalley said in a statement on Saturday. “But it is difficult for most people to recognise edible from poisonous mushrooms.” Poisonous varieties can cause severe abdominal pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sweating and confusion - or even death. “Some varieties of mushrooms can be fatal, causing severe kidney and liver damage,” Dr Scalley said. There have been 281

HARRY, MEGHAN TO VISIT SYDNEY IN OCTOBER

ustralians will welcome Prince Harry and his new bride Meghan to Australia in October with great warmth and excitement, the prime minister says. Kensington Palace has announced the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who married recently, will travel to Sydney for the 2018 Invictus Games - a Paralympics style event for defence veterans - of which Prince Harry is patron. It hasn’t been revealed if they will travel elsewhere in Australia, but their overseas tour will also include New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Australians would be excited about the visit, and the couple could expect a very warm welcome. “As the founder of the Invictus Games, The Duke of Sussex has become a champion for war veterans around the world, including in Australia,” he said in a statement.

hospitalisations in NSW and the ACT between 2014 and 2017 and almost 900 mushroomrelated calls to the poison hotline in the same period. The most dangerous variety of mushroom, the so-called death cap, was spotted growing in Victoria and the ACT earlier this month. Four people have died in the ACT since 2002 and there have been a number of poisonings associated with the lethal mushrooms. Experts warn cooking wild mushrooms does not make them safe to eat and people should avoid eating them unless they’re store bought.

‘I won’t stop suing Google’, Vic man vows

M

ilorad “Michael” Trkulja won’t stop suing Google until they remove his name and photos from the internet. The Melbourne man has won his High Court battle to sue the search engine for defamation over images and search results that link him to the Melbourne criminal underworld. Mr Trkulja, who was shot in the back in a Melbourne restaurant in 2004, successfully argued in the Victorian Supreme Court in 2012 that Google defamed him by publishing photos of him linked to hardened criminals of Melbourne’s underworld. Four years later the Victorian Court of Appeal overturned the decision, finding the case had no prospect of successfully proving defamation. The High Court disputed that ruling in a judgment on Wednesday and ordered Google pay Mr Trkulja’s legal costs. Mr Trkulja says he’ll continue the legal action until he gets the result

he wants, fearful someone will see the images and tell his grandchildren he’s a hardened criminal. “I will sue Google ... and I will sue them ‘til they stop. I want them to block my pictures,” he told AAP. “I’m not a criminal, I’ve never been involved and I will make sure these people are not going to ruin my family - I have grandchildren.” Google searches for “Melbourne criminal

World’s Ugliest Dog A

nine-year-old English bulldog has named the winner of the 2018 World’s Ugliest Dog contest in the San Francisco Bay Area. Zsa Zsa won the title Saturday at the Sonoma-Marin SonomaMarin Fairgrounds in Petaluma. The dog’s owner Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, will receive $US1500 ($A2016) for Zsa Zsa’s win.

Brainard found Zsa Zsa on a pet-finding site, according to the contest bio. Dogs in the annual competition flaunt their imperfections - some have hairless bodies, others have lolling tongues. The dogs and their handlers walk down a red carpet. The dogs are evaluated by a panel of judges. The contestants included a blackhead-covered Chinese Crested-Dachshund mutt, a bulldog mix with excess wrinkly skin and a Pekingese named Wild Thang. Last year’s winner was a 57kg gentle giant named Martha - a Neopolitan Mastiff with gas and a droopy face. The contest is in its 30th year. It is usually held on Friday nights, but organisers moved the competition to Saturday in an effort to draw a bigger audience.

underworld photos” bring up images of Mr Trkulja alongside gangland figures Mick Gatto, Carl Williams, Chopper Reid, Mario Condello and Mark and Jason Moran, his lawyer Guy Reynolds told the High Court in March. However, Google’s lawyers argued it would be “irrational” for someone to assume photos in a Google image search for underworld figures are all of criminals, because the same search would also bring up the Google logo, movie posters, images of

crime victims and photos of actor Marlon Brando. In a unanimous judgment led by Chief Justice Susan Keifel, the court said it was to be assumed someone searching for members of the Melbourne criminal underworld would “rationally suppose” the people whose pictures or names appeared, or at least some of them, were members of such. The court found while it was clear some pictured, like Brando, were not criminals, it could be concluded someone who is relatively unknown like Mr Trkulja may be connected with criminality or the underworld. Mr Trkulja also claimed defamation around Google’s “autocomplete” options for his name, which have included phrases like “is a former hit man”, “criminal” and “underworld”. However, the court heard autocomplete is an automated function and that previous searches influence future suggestions. Comment is being sought from Google.

HAN SOLO’S BLASTER GUN SELLS AT AUCTION

A

gun used by Han Solo in The Return of the Jedi has sold for $US550,000 ($A738,708) at auction to the museum chain Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, Julien’s Auctions says. The hero prop blaster gun used by Harrison Ford’s character in the 1983 movie, a BlasTech DL-44, is one of the best-known weapons in the Star Wars universe. The prop, which does not actually fire a powerful bolt of energy as depicted in the film, was made for the movie by the US art director on Return of the Jedi, James L. Schoppe. He was given the gun after

filming ended, along with other mementoes that he has kept for 35 years. The prop had a pre-sale estimate price of between $US300,000 ($A402,931) and $US500,000 ($A671,552) ahead of Saturday’s auction in Las Vegas, which Schoppe attended, Julien’s Auctions said. “Star Wars” memorabilia are among the most sought-after pop culture collectibles. Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber prop sold for $US450,000 ($A604,397) last year and an R2-D2 droid used in several films sold for $US2.7 million ($A3.6 million).

A FIFTH OF SHOPPERS OPPOSE

PLASTIC BAG BAN

O

ne in five Aussie shoppers are opposed to retail giants Woolworths and Coles introducing bans on singleuse plastic bags. While the bans have been welcomed by green groups and many shoppers, research by Canstar Blue shows 20 per cent don’t agree. Woolies has introduced its ban recently, with the retail giant’s supermarkets, BWS, Metro and petrol outlets stopping offering free disposable bags to shoppers in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. Coles stores will follow suit on July 1. Canstar says more than half of shoppers have already begun stockpiling plastic bags at home, based on a survey of more than 2200 people. While 71 per cent of those surveyed back the ban, 21 per cent disagree and eight per cent are undecided. Nearly half expect that taking their own bags to the shops would be a hassle. “While the plastic bag ban is supported by most, the supermarkets can expect some frustrated customers in the weeks ahead,” Canstar Blue Editor Simon Downes said on Monday. “While Coles and Woolworths have been trying to get the message across, there will still be lots of shoppers turning up unprepared and shocked that they’ll need to purchase one or more bags to carry their groceries home.” Some Woolworths shoppers have threatened to boycott the retailer after it revealed plans to charge its online pickup and delivery customers $1.00 for the

reusable plastic bags their goods will be packed in. Home delivery customers opting for a new “crate to bench service” will have to fork out $3.50 per order. Many angry shoppers have taken to the Woolworths Facebook page to criticise the charges. Stephanie Davey wrote that while she supports the removal of single-use plastic bags, the new extra charges were “completely unreasonable” given she already pays an annual delivery fee. “I do now need to accumulate heavy duty bags every delivery, and do not want to pay $3.50 to remove my groceries from the crate. Greenpeace spokeswoman Zoe Deans said the bans should dramatically reduce plastic waste, particularly on Australia’s coastline. “It takes a bit of getting used to and remembering to pop your reusable bag into your handbag or backpack to make sure you have one on hand,” she said. “But we do think people understand the pervasiveness of plastic and that it takes hundreds of years to break down in the environment.” Bans on single-use plastic bags in several European countries since 2003 has led to a 30 per cent drop in plastic bags found in waters off the continent, according to a study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment in April.

Jury gridlock stalls Melbourne mall case V

ictims’ families of Melbourne’s deadly Bourke Street rampage are devastated after a jury failed to find murder-accused James “Dimitrious” Gargasoulas mentally fit to stand trial. Jurors were dismissed on Friday after being unable to agree unanimously whether the 28-yearold should stand trial. It means a second fitness hearing is likely to be held with a new jury to determine if Gargasoulas is fit to stand trial on six counts of murder and 28 of attempted murder. “The families of the loved ones killed in this tragedy are devastated by this further delay,” Genna Angelowitsch from Adviceline Injury Lawyers said. “They hope the process can quickly move forward from here.” The statement came from lawyers representing families of five victims: Zachary Bryant, Sydney woman Jess Mudie, Japanese man Yosuke Kanno, Bhavita Patel and Matthew Si. Three-month-old Zachary was the youngest victim. His dad spoke outside court

after Friday’s outcome. “It’s disappointing. That’s all I’ll say,” Matthew Bryant said. The Supreme Court investigation hearing was to determine if Gargasoulas is fit to face trial accused of running down pedestrians in January 2017, killing six people. The jury of 12 deliberated for nearly four days after hearing expert evidence but they could not reach a unanimous decision and on Friday morning Justice Lex Lasry discharged them without a verdict. “There are those among you who had strongly held views and you were right not to compromise,” Justice Lasry told the jurors. “It is unfortunate we have got to this stage as it means the matter has to run again.” Gargasoulas is accused of murdering six people, including two children, when he allegedly ploughed a car through pedestrians. Justice Lasry said the fitness investigation would have to be repeated but suggested it could be unsuccessful a second time.

“Having heard all the evidence, firstly I am not surprised the jury struggled to reach a decision,” he said. Medical experts who testified in the case were divided over the question of Gargasoulas’s fitness. Two psychiatrists believe he is unfit for trial but one psychologist disagrees. Pet food industry to come under scrutiny

W

hether your pooch could be poisoned by poxy pet food will be the subject of a new parliamentary inquiry sniffing out mongrels in the unregulated industry. South Australian minor party Centre Alliance referred the issue to the upper house’s regional affairs committee on Wednesday. The inquiry will look at the domestic manufacture and importation of pet food, with labelling and nutritional requirements to come under scrutiny. More than 70 dogs have fallen ill and several have died in the past few months from megaesophagus, believed to be related to an issue with pet food. Agriculture Minister David Littleproud welcomed the inquiry and has written to state and territory governments to ask them to consider

imposing regulations on the industry. “Having a pet die is an absolutely terrible thing. It can be like losing a family member,” Mr Littleproud said. “The thought of those dogs in pain or dying is unacceptable. My dog Jacko is a good friend and losing him suddenly would be horrible.” The committee’s report is due by the end of August.

Has Basketball Saved the World? Dennis Rodman weeps as Trump and Kim meet

F

ormer NBA star Dennis Rodman openly wept on television in a live interview from Singapore as President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met for the first time. The eccentric former reality television star is one of the few westerners to have spent time with Kim during multiple visits to Pyongyang and the two struck up an unlikely friendship over their shared love of basketball. Rodman also goes back years with Trump and appeared on his Celebrity Apprentice show. In an emotional interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Rodman, wearing sunglasses and a “Make America Great Again” hat, said he had received a call from the White House ahead of Trump’s historic meeting with Kim - the first between a sitting president and North Korean leader. “Yes, Donald Trump reached out,” Rodman said, telling Cuomo he’d received a call from a person he described as Trump’s secretary. “She called me and said, ‘Dennis, Donald Trump is so proud of you. He thanks you a lot.’ And that means a lot,” said Rodman. He added that he suspected he “somewhat had something to do with this North Korean situation.” The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the call. Rodman grew emotional in the interview as he recalled former President Barack Obama failing to take him seriously when he returned from Pyongyang with a message from Kim after one of his trips. Rodman said Obama “just brushed me off” and “didn’t even give me the time of day.” He expressed hope that Trump and Kim would be able to make progress. “We don’t need a miracle. We just need the doors to be opened so we can start fresh,” he said, telling Cuomo, “it’s a great day” and exclaiming: “I’m so happy!” Asked to describe Kim, Rodman said the autocratic leader was “like a big kid” who wants to have a good time, but is “trying to protect his people” and his honour. “This guy wants to be around the world. He wants to come to

America. He wants to enjoy his life. He wants his people to enjoy this life,” said Rodman, adding that Kim is “not a dumb man”. White House officials have said that Rodman would play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations. Last week, Trump told reporters that Rodman had not been invited to the summit, but praised him as a “nice guy” and great rebounder. Rodman told reporters at Changi airport that he’d travelled to Singapore “to see what’s going on” and that he hoped “that things turn out to be well for everyone in the world.” Asked if he would meet Kim in Singapore, he said he thought the North Korean leader had “bigger things to worry about”, but added that every time he’d met with Kim, it had been a surprise. Rodman’s trip was sponsored by PotCoin, a cryptocurrency company that gives marijuana businesses access to banking as an alternative to many financial institutions that will not do business with cannabis companies because marijuana is illegal under US federal law. In 2014, Trump tweeted dismissively about the possibility that he and Rodman would someday travel to North Korea together. “Dennis Rodman was either drunk or on drugs (delusional) when he said I wanted to go to North Korea with him. Glad I fired him on Apprentice!” Trump wrote.

IBM PITS COMPUTER AGAINST HUMAN DEBATERS

I

BM has pitted a computer against two human debaters in the first public demonstration of artificial intelligence technology it’s been working on for more than five years. The company unveiled its Project Debater in San Francisco, asking it to make a case for government-subsidised space research - a topic it hadn’t studied in advance but championed fiercely with just a few awkward gaps in reasoning. “Subsidising space exploration is like investing in really good tyres,” argued the computer system, its female voice embodied in a 152cm-tall machine shaped

like a monolith with TV screens on its sides. Such research would enrich the human mind, inspire young people and be a “very sound investment,” it said, making it more important even than good roads, schools or health care. The computer delivered its opening argument by pulling in evidence from its huge internal repository of newspapers, journals and other sources. It then listened to a professional human debater’s counterargument and spent four minutes rebutting it. After closing arguments it moved on to a second debate about telemedicine.

An IBM research team based in Israel began working on the project not long after IBM’s Watson computer beat two human quizmasters on a Jeopardy challenge in 2011. But rather than just scanning a giant trove of data in search of factoids, IBM’s latest project taps into several more complex branches of AI. Search engine algorithms used by Google and Microsoft’s Bing use similar technology to digest and summarise written content and compose new paragraphs. Voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa rely on listening comprehension to answer

Flinders University and nearby Clovelly Park train station before expanding its route within a year. “I’m sure there will be technical learnings from the trial but as importantly, if not more importantly, what we’re hoping is for some community acceptance to come out of the trial,”

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll said following the unveiling of the shuttle recently. Mr Knoll was one of the first to take a ride on the vehicle, which was controlled at the launch by a chaperone due to connectivity issues. The French-designed electric shuttle can carry up to 15 passengers at speeds of up to 40km/h, but will only travel up to 30km/h during the trial. It will ferry passengers Monday to Friday but its battery life will restrict operation to between the hours of 10am and 2pm Flinders University Head of Civil Engineering Professor Rocco Zito said driverless technology uses a number of systems and mechanisms to map a particular route. “My analogy would be (that) it’s like railway tracks,” he told reporters at the launch. “The route is programmed and then it just drives along. All the speeds, all the turns, they’re all programmed in there.” He said the vehicles do not yet have the capacity to react to changes in the route, necessitating an on-board

questions posed by people. Google recently demonstrated an eerily human-like voice assistant that can call hair salons or restaurants to make appointments. But IBM says it’s breaking new ground by creating a system that tackles deeper human practices of rhetoric and analysis, and how they’re used to discuss big questions whose answers aren’t always clear.

chaperone at all times. Before the trial’s end, the shuttle will expand its course to the Flinders Medical Centre and the university’s Bedford Park campus, and will have the ability to use main arterial roads within the Bedford Park precinct. Prof Zito said developers hope the public will embrace the opportunity to ride on the shuttle. “The whole purpose of our trial is to gauge the community’s attitudes towards this new technology, to what we think is an enhanced mobility service,” he said. “What do we need to do to get people to be confident about the technology and actually convince them that it is providing a higher level of transport service than they could have at the moment?” The $4 million project received $1 million from the state government’s Future Mobility Lab Fund and used $3 million of industry funds for the five-year, three stage trial. Members of the public will be able to book a ride on FLEX on the Flinders University website from Wednesday, June 20.

APPLE FINED $9M FOR MISLEADING CUSTOMERS A

pple has been slapped with a $9 million fine by the Federal Court for making false or misleading claims to hundreds of customers who had faulty iPhones and iPads repaired by a third party. The competition watchdog took Apple to court after investigating complaints about how the tech giant told customers they were not entitled to a repair or replacement for their faulty devices if they had previously had them fixed by a third party repairer. “If a product is faulty,

customers are legally entitled to a repair or a replacement under the Australian Consumer Law, and sometimes even a refund,” a statement by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said on Tuesday. The ACCC launched legal action against Apple in April 2017 claiming it had misled consumers about their warranty

Microsoft building game streaming service

M

icrosoft is working on a game-streaming service that will deliver “console quality gaming on any device.” “Gaming is now at its most vibrant,” Phil Spencer, executive president of gaming at Microsoft, announced during Microsoft’s E3 press conference recently. “In this significant moment we are constantly challenging ourselves about where we can take gaming next.” He said that Microsoft is recommitting and harnessing the full breath of the company to deliver on the future of play. That includes experts in Microsoft research working on developing the future of gaming AI and the company’s cloud engineers building a game streaming network.

He added that the company is also in the midst of developing the architecture for the next Xbox consoles. This year’s E3 has been a period surprisingly engrossed in the idea of turning what once was a physical goods, retail driven industry into something more akin to Netflix. Ubisoft founder Yves Guillemot said that the ability to play games on essentially anything with a display by streaming the game from a server was going to reshape the entire face of gaming. Recently, Electronic Arts unveiled just such a service. While still in development, EA said their cloud gaming initiative would allow people to play highend games on mobile phones, on smart TVs and on low-end laptops like Chromebooks. In the lead up to E3, Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer said that Microsoft was most interested in making sure games play well no matter what sort of device they are playing on, a hint that the company was investing in cloud gaming.

rights by routinely refusing to inspect or fix faulty devices for free if they had been repaired by a third party. The action was sparked after an investigation into complaints by consumers about an “error 53” that disabled their iPhones and iPads after they downloaded an update to Apple’s operating system. The ACCC said Apple admitted that between February 2015 and February 2016 it had told at least 275 Australian customers affected by “error 53” that they were no longer eligible for a remedy if their device had been repaired by a third party. “Apple’s representations led customers to believe they’d be denied a remedy for their faulty device because they used a third party repairer,” ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said. “The court declared the mere fact that an iPhone or iPad had been repaired by someone other than Apple did not, and could

not, result in the consumer guarantees ceasing to apply, or the consumer’s right to a remedy being extinguished.” An Apple spokeswoman told Reuters the company had “very productive conversations with the ACCC about this” without commenting further on the court finding. Apple has offered to compensate about 5000 customers whose devices were disabled by “error 53”. The tech giant also told the court it would improve staff training, audit information about warranties and Australian Consumer Law on its website and improve its systems and procedures to ensure future compliance. Opposition spokesman on competition and productivity Andrew Leigh again called for increased fines for breaches of consumer law. “Bigger penalties deter dodgy behaviour and some of the revenue could be directed back into the commission’s litigation budget, giving it more firepower to go after companies that flout the law,” Mr Leigh said.

Amazon unveils handsfree streaming device

A

lexa for couch potatoes is coming. Amazon’s new streaming TV device will let users shout out when they want to turn on the TV, change channels or search for sitcoms - all without pushing any buttons. The Fire TV Cube is not entirely hands-free yet, however. Some apps or streaming services may require viewers to pick up the included remote to rewind or stop a show. Amazon says it’s working with those services to integrate voice commands. Amazon’s other voice-controlled Fire TV devices require a push of the remote’s mic button or a separate Echo device with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Unlike the other devices, the Cube will let viewers switch between streaming services like Netflix and regular cable channels with such voice commands as “Alexa, turn on ESPN.” The new device can also do typical Alexa tasks, such as playing Jeopardy! or fetching the

weather, even when the TV is off. Amazon sees Alexa as a major part of its future. It has struck deals to put the voice assistant in cars, refrigerators and alarm clocks. Getting people to use Alexa keeps them tied to Amazon’s services and ultimately buying more from the online retailer. The Cube will be available later this month for $US120. Nvidia’s Shield also offers hands-free streaming using Google’s digital assistant. Other devices, including Apple TV, require activation with the remote’s mic.

Calls for kids’ data protection in Australia

A

ustralia will inevitably need to follow other countries legislating against the collection of data about children from the internet, a data privacy protection expert warns. Dylan Collins, the chairman of the kids’ digital media company TotallyAwesome, believes the internet was designed for adults and many services are struggling to adapt to the extraordinary number of youngsters logging on every day. “Pretty much everything is based around capturing personal data and monetising it in some form,” the Irish entrepreneur told AAP on Thursday. “That’s just not safe or appropriate for six, seven or eight years olds.” In recent years, the US, Europe and China have created socalled “zero-data environments” which prohibit companies from

collecting data on people under a set age - ranging between 13 and 16. “It’s probably inevitable that something similar will come to Australia in the not too distant future,” Mr Collins said. He predicted that over the next five to seven years there will be a universal right for children to have access to the internet without being tracked. Mr Collins’ concerns follow the Cambridge Analytica breach, which highlighted how Facebook data can be turned against internet users for sinister political purposes. But he believes the much bigger concern is what hasn’t been done with data - and what could potentially be done. Mr Collins estimates before a child reaches the age of 13, there are “tens of millions” of pieces of information about them that have been collected and could be used

to build a profile. “You’ve got all of this personal data about children floating around the very dark corners of the internet,” he said. “You can imagine some pretty

nefarious uses this could be used for. “At some point, you’re going to see some sort of 9/11-type event with all of this childrens’ data that has been inadvertently collected.”

STAR TREK-STYLE DIAGNOSIS DEVICE SOON

A

Star Trek-type medical tricorder, diagnosing medical problems at the push of a button, could be a step closer to reality. Researchers at Birmingham’s Aston University have developed a working desktop prototype of a machine which can take readings from blood and human tissue using laser beams. It has been successfully trialled at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee while a portable prototype - with applications beyond medicine - is being worked on. Developers at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT) said it allows a range of tests to be carried out “quickly and painlessly”. The innovation means the once fanciful idea - depicted in sci-fi

show Star Trek - of doctors using tricorders to effortlessly diagnose a variety of ailments may soon become reality. The machine uses three separate lasers to monitor how effectively blood is delivered to tissue, measure bloodoxygen levels and look at cell metabolism. It works by shining the laser beam on the patient’s skin, while the patient feels nothing. That data is then instantly processed by a computer, and reproduced as a graph. The device has already had practical applications, being used in diagnostic procedures for strokes and skin cancers, and is non-invasive, as no needles are necessary. It can constantly monitor blood delivery above the eyebrows,

helping doctors mitigate the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension. In cancer patients, researchers have said it is a high-precision way of identifying the margins of head and neck skin cancers, which could help reduce the risk of tumours returning. A prototype wearable monitor has been developed that athletes can wear on their wrists. Much of the technology is ready to go into production, and the university recently launched Aston Medical Technology to commercialise inventions. DAIMLER UNVEILS HEAVY- ‘VAPES’ LEGALISED: POLL DUTY ELECTRIC TRUCK D

aimler has unveiled an all-electric big rig truck it promises to have in production in 2021, as the German automaker mounts a major challenge to European manufacturers and Tesla. Daimler’s Freightliner eCascadia is an 18-wheeler with a 400 km range, aimed for regional distribution and port services, compared to Tesla’s Semi - expected to be built by 2020 - which it says will be suited to longer-distance runs with a 800 km range. Daimler said it will start delivering prototypes to customers later this year for fieldtesting and expects to have the trucks in production by 2021.

Daimler also unveiled a medium-duty Freightliner eM2 106, with a range of up to 370 km, designed for local distribution, such as beverage delivery, which some analysts see as the “sweet spot” of the emerging electric truck market. Truckmaker Navistar and its partner Volkswagen aim to launch their own medium-duty truck in North America by late 2019. Daimler, with a $US66.4 billion market capitalisation and bestknown for its luxury MercedesBenz brand, has a 40 per cent share of the roughly $US39 billion North American heavyduty truck market.

Image: An artists’ view of Tesla’s new prototype electric truck called Tesla Semi

“While electric truck sales will be fairly significant in coming years, I don’t think it will displace diesel anytime soon especially in highway, long-haul trucking where obviously battery capacity and range anxiety present itself,” said Tim Denoyer, senior analyst at ACT Research, a commercial vehicle consultancy. Daimler Trucks North America Chief Executive Officer Roger Nielsen said the truck’s payload had been curbed by the size of batteries. Stuttgart-based Daimler will invest more than 2.5 billion euros ($A3.8 billion) in R&D at its truck operations by 2019, with more than 500 million euros earmarked for electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles, connectivity and self-driving technology.

ost Australians want a ban on electronic cigarettes lifted, according to an Australian Retailers Association survey. Conducted by the Crosby Textor Group, the poll shows 61 per cent of 1200 adults backed a move towards legalising e-cigarettes or vaporisers, commonly known as vapes. The Turnbull government should follow the lead of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand by opening up the market, ARA executive director Russell Zimmerman says. “More and more Australians are buying personal vaporisers with nicotine online from overseas, simply because they can’t buy them locally,” Mr Zimmerman said in a statement on Monday. “The government needs to act so that responsible local retailers can compete on a level playing field and sell less harmful products for Australians trying to change their habits.

A source had told Variety that the rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, had been critically wounded. TMZ is reporting that XXX had “no pulse” following the incident though Variety has yet to confirm those details. A Broward County official only confirmed “a developing incident regarding a shooting” located in Deerfield Beach, about 70km north of Miami, in which an “adult male victim was transported to an area hospital.” In 2017, the hip-hop newcomer appeared on the cover of XXL Magazine’s influential “Freshman” issue alongside Kamaiyah, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, PnB Rock, MadeinTYO, Playboi Carti, Amine, Kap G, KYLE and Ugly God. XXX won

the fan vote to make the cover. The 20-year-old Florida native had been embroiled in legal problems over his alleged beating of a pregnant girlfriend. The controversy has resulted in numerous articles calling for the greater music industry to not “co-sign,” or endorse, his music, including one that was published by Pitchfork titled, “XXXTentacion Is Blowing Up Behind Bars. Should He Be?” A June 5 feature on the rapper that appeared in Miami New Times chronicled the hip-hop star’s rise to fame, delving deep into his unstable home life and trouble with the law. In the piece, XXX is quoted as saying that abuse allegations “can go off hearsay,” and that, “women are almost more powerful than men.” In March, XXXTentacion’s album “?” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. His previous release, called “17,” landed at No. 2.

BLACK PANTHER WINS BIG AT MTV AWARDS T

he MTV Movie & TV Awards gave Black Panther its first taste of awards glory, with Marvel’s blockbuster taking home four honours including two awards for its star, Chadwick Boseman. Boseman quickly handed off his best hero award to James Shaw Jr., who wrestled an assault-style rifle away from a gunman in a Tennessee Waffle House in April. “This is going to live at your house,” Boseman told Shaw, giving him the show’s golden

popcorn award. Stranger Things was the top television honoree, winning four awards including a repeat win for best show. Black Panther, about a king and virtuous superhero of the technologically-advanced nation of Wakanda, broke barriers earlier this year as the first Marvel film to feature a black lead. Its massive popularity overshadowed competing films like Wonder Woman and Avengers: Infinity War.

which starts next month in Australia, Los Angeles and Vancouver. Hogan recently thrilled and infuriated fans of the Crocodile Dundee film series in which he starred in the 1980s, by appearing in a short film that appeared to be a trailer for a new film in the franchise. But the clip turned out to be a advertisement for Tourism Australia. The Very Excellent Mr Dundee sees Hogan playing himself and on the brink of receiving a Knighthood for services to comedy. “Don’t do anything to mess this up,” his manager tells him. However, despite all his best efforts, the next six weeks sees his name and reputation destroyed.

Depp’s bad boy image becoming a liability J

ohnny Depp’s bad boy persona used to help sell the movies he made. He was a real life Captain Jack Sparrow, who could hit the press circuit with a few rococo anecdotes delivered with a rock’n’roll edge between drags on freshly rolled cigarettes. His act was charming and his mystique undeniable. No longer. A new Rolling Stone profile of the actor compares Depp’s current, debauched existence to Elvis’ last, drug-fuelled days. The piece has left readers and Hollywood folk alarmed with its portrayal of Depp, a 55-year old man, drinking goblet after goblet of vintage red wine, smoking hash, and, it is heavily implied, partaking in even stronger substances, all from within a gated mansion cut off from reality. Studios still in business with the actor are poring over the profile, assessing what - if any - fallout there would be from the piece. It’s a major distraction for the backers of Depp’s upcoming films - including Global Road’s September crime drama

“City of Lies” and Warner Bros “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”. Spokespeople for both studios declined to comment and Depp’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Even before the Rolling Stone article was published, Depp had been viewed as out of step with the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements after being accused by ex-wife Amber Heard of domestic assault. The backlash to those allegations prompted J.K. Rowling to defend casting Depp in

“Fantastic Beasts”. “Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the film-makers and I are not only

comfortable sticking with our original casting but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies,” Rowling said in a statement. A legal battle with his former business managers has laid bare embarrassing spending details and, worse yet, exposed him as an actor in desperate need of pay cheque roles to fund his lifestyle. “His baggage is a huge concern,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. The Rolling Stone story may have set off alarms, but an individual with knowledge of the “Fantastic Beasts” production said the article is not in keeping with Depp’s on-set behaviour. He was on time, knew his lines, and was courteous to cast and crew. Depp isn’t the only actor causing headaches for studios. Vertical Entertainment is soon releasing “Billionaire Boys Club”, despite actor Kevin Spacey, who is accused of harassing and assaulting several men, appearing in it. Amazon is also pondering “A Rainy Day in New York”, directed by Woody Allen, who is accused of assaulting his daughter, Dylan Farrow.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS SCOUR FOR WOODSTOCK HISTORY

A

Paul Brown, of the Public Archaeology Facility at Binghamton University, measures a dig at the site of the original Woodstock Music and Art Fair, in Bethel, N.Y.

rchaeologists have been scouring the grassy hillside famously trampled during the 1969 Woodstock music festival carefully sifting through the dirt from a time of peace, love, protest and good vibes. Perhaps they may unearth an old peace symbol? A strand of hippie beads? Jimi Hendrix’s guitar pick? While the five-day dig turned up some non-mind blowing artefacts - aluminium can pull tabs, broken

bottle glass - the main point is to help map exactly where The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker wowed the crowds 49 years ago. “The overall point of this investigation is to kind of define the stage space,” said Binghamton University Public Archaeology Facility project director Josh Anderson as he knelt beside a hole that showed evidence of a fence that kept 400,000 fans from the stage area.

Honda Urban EV Concept named ‘Best Concept Car’ by global judging panel

A

n international panel of automobile experts has named the Honda Urban EV Concept as ‘The Best Concept Car’ in the renowned 2018 Car Design Award honours, presented today as part of the Turin Motor Show. Organised by Auto & Design magazine, the Car Design Award finalists and winners are selected and judged by a jury comprised of 12 automotive journalists from the world’s most prestigious publications. The Honda Urban EV Concept was named as a finalist in April this year, and was subsequently chosen as the overall concept car winner against nine other vehicle designs. Global recognition in the Car Design Award follows the Urban EV Concept’s success in being named as Automobile magazine’s 2018 Concept of the Year in January. Honda revealed the Urban EV Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The milestone design sets the direction for Honda’s first battery electric for Europe, which will be introduced during late 2019,with a simple and sophisticated appearance that WACKER BS 500

contrasts with the advanced technology that powers the car. Its low and wide proportions present a sporty stance, while the contemporary styling incorporates slim A-pillars and a wide windscreen that appears to sweep around the entire front end of the cabin. Entry and exit from the vehicle is via rear-hinged coach doors. At the front of the Urban EV Concept, interactive multilingual messages can be displayed between the headlights, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road, or charging status updates. The interior is equally inviting, with natural materials and an open-plan cabin that features front and rear bench seating. Natural grey fabric and wood

finish accents create the relaxed ambience of a lounge area, while a high-tech ‘floating’ dashboard incorporates a wraparound screen that runs behind the console and extends into the doors. “The Honda Urban EV Concept is a wonderfully judged piece of design which brings a much-needed sense of personality to the EV space,” concludes the joint statement from the Car Design Award jury. “Its clever blending of both retro and futuristic aesthetics gives it an undeniable desirability that few can compete with.” Honda’s Urban EV Concept will be the first pure electric car to go into series production under the brand’s ‘Electric Vision’ strategy in Europe.

This strategy includes the development of a dedicated electric vehicle platform, featuring fully-electric Honda powertrain technology. “Our Urban EV Concept is the true representation of ‘We make it simple’ design idea, which aims to make cars closer to people’s hearts,” said Makoto Iwaki, Honda R&D Executive Creative Director. “I express the utmost gratitude on behalf of our entire Honda design team to the jury who valued our unique proposal, which we feel contrasts with the recent car designs. The production car based on this concept model is currently underway, which will be easy to access, fun to drive, and make everyday life more fulfilled and joyful.”

DEANDRE AYTON THE NBA’S NO.1 OVERALL PICK T

he NBA draft is underway, with Deandre Ayton becoming the first No.1 Phoenix Sun and Luka Doncic being traded just a day after arriving in the US. The Atlanta Hawks swapped the rights to Doncic, the No.3 pick from Slovenia, to Atlanta for Trae Young, the No.5 selection from Oklahoma, on Thursday night. The Mavericks also gave up a future first-round pick to draft Doncic, who only arrived in New York on Wednesday after helping Spain’s Real Madrid win their league championship after he won Euroleague MVP and Final Four MVP honours when they won that title this year. The Hawks will get perhaps the most exciting player in college basketball last season and the first player to lead the nation in scoring and assists in the same campaign. Otherwise, the top of the draft was dominated by big men, starting with a pair of former high school teammates. The Suns stayed close to home to make the 7-foot-1 Ayton the first No.1 pick in franchise

history. The centre from Arizona averaged 20.1 points and 11.6 rebounds in his lone season in Tucson, tying for the national lead with 24 double-doubles in 35 games. He joined Mychal Thompson - father of Golden State All-Star Klay Thompson - in 1978 as the only players from the Bahamas to be the No.1 pick in the NBA draft. The Sacramento Kings followed by taking Marvin Bagley III, the Duke big man who played with Ayton at Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix in 2015/16. With Jaren Jackson Jr. going fourth to Memphis, Texas centre Mo Bamba going No.6 to Orlando and Wendell Carter Jr. following to Chicago, it was an early run of big men in what’s increasingly become a perimeter-based league. Then it was another guard with Alabama’s Collin Sexton going at No.8 to Cleveland, triggering chants of Michael Porter Jr.’s name by Knicks fans who hoped they would take him with the No.9 pick. But they ended up disappointed as New York went with Kentucky’s Kevin Knox.

‘NANNY STATE’ CRITICISM OVER FOLAU CITING

R

ugby will have turned into a “nanny state” if Israel Folau is suspended for challenging a high ball against Ireland, according to NSW Waratahs assistant coach Simon Cron. Folau could miss Friday night’s crucial Super Rugby clash with the Melbourne Rebels depending on the outcome of a World Rugby disciplinary hearing over an incident early in Australia’s narrow third Test defeat to Ireland. Cron said he would be “stunned” if Folau was suspended for his ninthminute aerial clash with Irish captain Peter O’Mahony, suggesting it was World Rugby who needed to reacquaint themselves with their own rules.

BLUES FINALLY BREAK ORIGIN HALVES CURSE H

Slater passes Maroons baton to Ponga B

illy Slater will trudge off into State of Origin retirement knowing his beloved Queensland No.1 jersey is in safe hands when he passes the baton to heir apparent Kalyn Ponga. Slater admits he was lost for words as he marvelled at the Newcastle phenom’s blistering performance during his Maroons debut in Sunday’s 18-14 loss to NSW at ANZ Stadium. While the Maroons suffered just their second series loss in 14 years, the emergence of Ponga has left everyone assured Queensland’s future remains bright. With Slater returning from a hamstring injury, the young fullback was picked on the bench and asked to perform as a roving utility. It is universally accepted he will inherit the custodian’s role next year and he gave the world a taste of his potential after coming on midway through the first half. Even defending in the front line - something the Knights fullback has rarely done during his NRL career - he rarely missed a beat. Standing on Queensland’s left edge, he made 26 tackles. By comparison, he has made just 81 tackles during his 24 NRL

appearances. He also created constant headaches for the Blues defence and in the second half looked to be sailing to the tryline for the match-winner but was cut down by James Tedesco. “Brilliant. I’m lost for words commenting on (Ponga’s) performance tonight,” Slater told AAP “He got thrown into a foreign position in the middle of the field and his defence was as good as anyone’s. “He just wanted to get involved. He got the footy, he ran the footy. “He just has a great attitude to go along with his talent. He’s got a big future. We all know that don’t we. That was certainly reassured tonight.” Slater will draw a curtain on his 15-year Origin career after next month’s dead rubber at Suncorp Stadium. Asked about his desire to go out an Origin winner, the 35-yearold said there was no room for sentimentality. “I’ve never been one for it to be about me,” Slater said. “The possibility of going up there and getting reward for the effort we’ve put in this year is more of a driving factor rather than doing it for me.”

as the curse on NSW’s State of Origin halves finally been broken? On the evidence of the Blues’ thrilling series win over Queensland on Sunday, it appears so. James Maloney and Nathan Cleary this year became the state’s 21st halves pairing since Braith Anasta and Brett Finch started in game one in 2006. That’s almost a new duo every two games but coach Brad Fittler may have finally unearthed a combination for the future in the two Penrith stars. Like he did in game one in Melbourne, Maloney played chief architect in Sydney and had a hand in all three Blues tries. His first assist came when he ignored the fact he threw an intercept pass in the seriesopener and shovelled a risky three-man cutout to Josh AddoCarr in the 25th minute. “There was three people that could’ve intercepted it. I thought, ‘Really? You still went for it? Really?’” Fittler said. “That was a big moment. I was about to pull him off.” Fittler admitted Cleary looked

sometimes disorientated but delivered when it mattered, evoking memories of Scott Sattler’s famous 2003 grand final tackle with a try-saver on a flying Valentine Holmes. He became just the eight NSW halfback to taste a series win over the Maroons. “He was a bit lost at times but when we needed to do a tackle on the sideline down a fast winger, he was the man to do it,” Fittler said of Cleary. “They were great tonight and they improved. “In the first half we did nothing, did we? We were just very hesitant. We had a chat at halftime then their game changed. That’s not easy to do. They were pretty good, our halves tonight.” The series win was Maloney’s first in four cracks. “I think it’s special when you’ve been in this arena, fallen short and it was just short a couple of times. A lot of guys in there that have played their first game. “This is what Origin is. They come in and they win the series but there’s a few of us in there, probably understand a little bit more just how special it is.”

WATSON BEATS CASEY TO WIN TRAVELLERS TITLE

A

Hamilton wins in France to retake F1 lead F

ormula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has steered clear of chaos on the opening lap to win the first French Grand Prix in a decade and retake the overall lead from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Vettel finished only fifth after colliding with Hamilton’s Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas at the start. Sunday’s victory was the 65th of Hamilton’s F1 career but the Briton’s first in France, which last hosted a race in 2008. “Great work guys! I’m so happy for England as well,” he said over the team radio, referring to the nation’s 6-1 World Cup group win over Panama. “It’s a beautiful Sunday, everyone.” Hamilton, who started on pole position, now leads Vettel by 14 points after eight of 21 races. The Briton has 145 and the German 131. Dutch 20-year-old Max Verstappen took the chequered flag in second with Kimi

Raikkonen passing Vettel and completing the podium for Ferrari. Australian Daniel Ricciardo was fourth. Hamilton had never before won in France and his victory at Le Castellet, a southern circuit that last hosted Formula One in 1990, set a record for the most wins at different grands prix. He had shared the record of 22 with retired seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher. He also extended his record of wins at different circuits to 26. There was drama at the start as Hamilton and Bottas lined up on the front row with Vettel just behind in third. Vettel and Bottas collided as they jostled for position, with the German handed a five-second penalty for causing the collision. “We were going side by side to the braking zone. I went for the outside and I think I braked quite a bit later and left enough room for him to be inside still,” Bottas said.

“He just went wide and hit me. I got a puncture and decent damage to the floor, which really compromised the race.” Niki Lauda, the Mercedes non-executive chairman, believed Vettel’s penalty was too lenient. “Five seconds is nothing. He really destroyed the whole race for himself and for Bottas,” he said. Vettel said that, with hindsight, he would have been better off with a slower start. “It was my mistake. I tried to brake early and get out of it but I had no room,” said the German. The incident dropped both to the back of the field after pitstops while the safety car was deployed for four laps with debris scattered across the track from other accidents. Two of the three French drivers retired on the spot, with Force India’s Esteban Ocon and Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly the unlucky casualties. Vettel returned to the pits for a new front wing while Bottas

merican Bubba Watson stormed back from six strokes behind in the final round to overhaul England’s Paul Casey and win the PGA Tour’s Travellers Championship by three strokes. Watson carded a sevenunder-par 63, capping a dominant performance with a three-foot birdie at the final hole at TPC River Highlands in the state of Connecticut. The American finished at 17-under 263 to become the first three-time winner on the PGA Tour this year. “It’s been an amazing ride, my whole career, but this year has been outstanding,” Watson said. Jason Day was the bestplaced Australian and finished in a tie for 12th after finishing the tournament with a score of 69 on Sunday. Casey started the day with a four-shot cushion over his closest rival, American Russell Henley, but a birdie at the first hole was the Englishman’s only one the entire day. He carded 72 to tie for second at 14-under with Americans JB Holmes (67), Stewart Cink (62) and Beau Hossler (66). Henley finished a further shot back in a tie for sixth. Watson took a while to reel in Casey, finally doing so with a 10-foot birdie at the 15th hole. “That’s when I think I tied him at 16-under, so that’s

limped back on three wheels and a rim with the remains of the tyre flailing. Their fight back into the points, and in Vettel’s case with some hope of ending up on the podium, provided much of the entertainment for the rest of the afternoon with the German up to eighth after 15 laps.

CRICKET AUSTRALIA SIGNS NAMING RIGHTS DEAL

R

Cilic beats Djokovic for Queen’s title T

op seed Marin Cilic has saved match point before edging past Novak Djokovic 5-7 7-6(4) 6-3 to win his second Queen’s Club crown. The 29-year-old Croatian, who last won at Queen’s in 2012, came from a set down to outlast Djokovic for his first title of the season in what was the longest final in the tournament’s history at two hours 56 minutes. It was a particularly satisfying win for last year’s Wimbledon finalist who had also held match point in the 2017 Queen’s final before being edged out by Feliciano Lopez. “It was a special win for me because last year I had a match point and didn’t convert it,” Cilic said. “It was a tough match - no breaks for me until the final set. “Overall, I had a great time here this week. I have waited six years to get my hands on this trophy. It is an amazing

crowd and I will come back every single year.” Cilic controlled the early exchanges from the baseline but missed six break point chances in the opening set, allowing Djokovic to battle back. The 31-year-old took his chances with a couple of crisp forehands in the 12th game to break the Cilic serve and claim the first set. A rampant Djokovic conceded just one point on his first serve during the second set and looked favourite to close out the contest in the ninth game but Cilic responded with a booming serve out wide to save match point. The Serb also looked in control at 4-1 up in the tiebreak but Cilic fought back and a double fault at 4-4 allowed the Croat to take charge as he won six points in a row to force a decider. With momentum back on his side, Cilic looked comfortable in the west London sunshine

as he grabbed the only break in the final set to claim his first title of the year. “It is great to see Novak coming back and we all hope he gets back to the top level again,” he said. Former world number one Djokovic, whose career has stalled since he won his 12th grand slam title at the 2016 French Open, has been battling for form and fitness. There were signs of his best at the French Open but a first final in almost a year should give him confidence ahead of next month’s Wimbledon. “I have to see the positive because I haven’t played a final in almost a year,” said Djokovic. “This came at the right time because Wimbledon is the most renowned and prestigious tournament in tennis.” As for his chances of a fourth Wimbledon crown, though, Djokovic was circumspect. “I wouldn’t say I’m a contender for a trophy or anything like that,” he said.

eal estate classifieds and services company Domain has struck a four-year naming rights deal with Cricket Australia. Domain joins Alinta Energy and Woolworths as the sport’s major domestic partners, with the agreement involving use of the company’s branding and content across mobile, web and social media platforms as well as on TV and at cricket grounds. “Domain is delighted to begin a partnership with Cricket Australia. Our aligned audience strategies in mobile and content represent a unique opportunity for both brands,” Domain chief editorial and marketing officer Melina Cruickshank said. “We believe the ‘spirit of cricket’ is resilient and look forward to the growth opportunities this partnership will provide. As part of the deal, Domain will be the presenting partner of men’s Test cricket. After the ball tampering saga in South Africa earlier this year, Cricket Australia lost major partner Magellan as a sponsor of men’s domestic Test series. Magellan had inked a three-year sponsorship deal that started in August 2017, but walked away early after the incident in South Africa. Australia’s men’s team host India in a four-Test series this summer, starting in Adelaide on December 6.

NINE SECURE TENNIS RIGHTS FOR 2019

T

he Australian Open will be shown on Channel Nine with an agreement reached with Tennis Australia and the Seven Network to bring forward its broadcasting deal by one year. While Nine had already agreed to pay $300 million to secure the rights over five years from 2020 it will now fork out an extra $48.5 million to show the tournament in 2019. “There’s an air of excitement at Nine about being the new home of tennis, so to be able to start our new deal a year early brings us all much delight,” Nine CEO Hugh Marks has told nine.com.au

T

hey might be at risk of losing Daniel Arzani but Melbourne City has stocked up for the new A-League season by signing another young gun in Lachlan Wales. Wales, 20, made a number eye-catching cameos last season for Central Coast last season, having grown up in Terrigal and spending four years at the Mariners academy. But the attacking midfielder has opted to continue his career at City, which is fast becoming the destination club for promising Australian talents. The club played a major hand in Arzani’s stunning rise from A-League bench weapon into World Cup sensation, with several big European clubs reportedly keen on signing him. Wales is hopeful of following in his footsteps and using the club as a springboard for bigger and better things. “I just think the environment City have here with all their facilities... it was just a complete shock to me and made me very excited as a player,” he said. “I think I’ll bring a lot of energy. I’m very positive on the

ball, I love to get at my player and beat them one-on-one and slip in some of the strikers for a few assists. “They have some very dynamic players which I look forward to linking up with, the likes of Arzani and Fornaroli ... it’s going to be very competitive to get a spot each week and I look forward to the challenge.” Wales is one of three player movements confirmed by City on Monday. They also announced the return of Anthony Caceres, another former Mariners player, on a loan deal. Caceres, 25, is owned by parent club Manchester City and spent last season on loan to AlWasl in the UAE Pro League. He has played two previous seasons with Melbourne City, providing coach Warren Joyce with further midfield options after the release of marquee Marcin Budzinski and Oliver Bozanic, who have since signed for Polish side KS Cracovia and Scottish club Hearts respectively. Defensive utility Osama Malik, meanwhile, has signed on for another season.

BULLDOGS COACH SNARLS AFTER TIGHT AFL LOSS

C

Paine to bide time on ODI captaincy A

ustralia captain Tim Paine intends to bide his time over deciding on his own white-ball future after his side fell to a 5-0 whitewash against England. Jos Buttler’s stunning century steered England to a thrilling one-wicket victory over the Aussies at Old Trafford on Sunday to wrap up a 5-0 whitewash. But while the run of bad results has left Paine unsure about his one-day captaincy, he fully intends to continue leading the Test team. “I haven’t thought about it to be honest,” the 33-year-old wicketkeeperbatsman said after Sunday’s defeat. “All I know is I was coming here to do this series and I’ve said a few times before, when you are my age it’s a bit foolish to look ahead.

“Certainly I am really looking forward to captaining the Test team and continuing how I have been playing in that format. “But where I go with the rest of my cricket is something we will discuss in the coming weeks.” Paine’s own performances over the series - scores of 12, 15, five, three, and just one in Sunday’s final match, which saw his side post a paltry 205 off 34.4 overs, have left the Tasmanian bitterly disappointed. “It’s been difficult,” Paine added. “Obviously you play cricket to do well and this series I haven’t done that, I haven’t played as well as I would have liked to. “That happens but it’s not certainly through a lack of effort. I’m trying my guts out, like the rest of the guys. It’s one of those

series, started off poorly and just couldn’t get it back on track.” Paine says that despite their setback in England, he expects to see most of the squad returning next year for their defence of the World Cup. “I think everyone who’s here is going to be in the mix for that squad,” he said. “We don’t know who we will have available next year. “But I’ve heard a few times that this team doesn’t have a plan, or it doesn’t know where it’s going, but we do have a clear direction. “We know we are a long way off the mark at the moment but the World Cup is not for 12 months and we know when we get our best team on the park, playing our best cricket, we are going to be right in the thick of it.”

lose enough wasn’t nearly good enough for Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge, who gave his players an almighty spray in the immediate aftermath of their heartbreaking two-point loss to North Melbourne. With the final siren of Saturday night’s 12.5 (77) to 11.9 (75) loss still ringing in their ears, Beveridge took his players behind closed doors and conducted a scathing review of the disastrous final minutes. Billy Gowers appeared to have sealed a memorable win for the undermanned Dogs with his goal about minutes from the end at Etihad Stadium putting his side back in front. But a Mitch Wallis blunder followed by a team-wide loss of concentration opened the door for Kangaroos skipper Jack Ziebell to kick the winning goal with 20 seconds left on the clock. “It’s rare that I confront them and raise my voice ... I’m a rational person,” Beveridge said. “There was a lot about tonight’s game we liked especially the way we moved the footy and gave ourselves opportunities. “But ultimately, as a group, we got ourselves to a point where we could win the game and I don’t want our boys to walk away thinking ‘that was good and we almost got there’. “All that was good and we should have got there. “You can’t tiptoe and tread lightly around that when it is such a significant game.” With skipper Easton Wood and ball magnet Jack Macrae both hamstrung in last week’s loss to Port Adelaide, the Dogs defied the odds to lead at every change. Even when the Roos hit the front in the last quarter, Beveridge’s men found a way to get their noses back in front. But the Wallis clanger kick inside 50 that went out on the full with less than a minute left set off a calamitous chain of events. “We fell apart structurally in the last two minutes after we kicked our last goal,” Beveridge lamented. “It’s frustrating (actually) it’s more than frustrating ... it’s extremely disappointing. “We got ourselves into a position to win it, that’s a positive sign, but we couldn’t sustain what we’d done in the first half. “We can say that over time, as we roll we’ll be able to sustain it for longer, but we can’t ourselves an out because we believe we should have won the game but woulda, coulda, shoulda ... it’s a pretty disappointing outcome.”

W

est Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui insists he won’t get dragged down by the critics who said he didn’t go in hard enough during last week’s AFL loss to Essendon. Brisbane great Jonathan Brown and former St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt both criticised Naitanui for failing to throw his weight around during the first half of the 28-point loss to Essendon. Brown, speaking on Fox Footy at halftime of Thursday’s game, said West Coast players in general didn’t show enough physicality. And he said Naitanui - the biggest and most intimidating player on the ground - should have shown more leadership by crashing packs attempting to mark. Riewoldt agreed. “It’s been a knock on Nic Nat for a long time - he averages less than two marks a game,” Riewoldt said. “He might take mark of the year once in a while, but it’s not always on your terms. Sometimes you just have to crash the pack.” But Naitanui disagreed with the criticism, saying he enjoys the physical aspect of the game. “I feel like I do throw my weight around,” Naitanui said. “When you’re doing really well, everyone’s on your side. But when you’re not doing too well, everyone jumps on you straight away.

Naitanui not fazed over marking criticism

“It’s not like we’re sitting on bottom of the ladder playing terrible football. We have obviously got a lot to work on, but that’s just part of it. “That’s just all outside noise. We know what we’re doing internally.” Naitanui has generally received widespread praise for the toughness he has shown this season. And he even copped a onematch suspension in round seven for unleashing a bone-crunching tackle on Port’s Karl Amon. Naitanui said he had copped some friendly flak from teammates after going to ground from a soft hit to the chest from Essendon ruckman Tom Bellchambers last Thursday. Bellchambers was fined $2000 over the incident. “He just got me in a good spot,” Naitanui said. “We practise it at training pushing guys off on the chest. But he got me sweet and winded me. “It’s all part of the game. The physical part of the game is something I really enjoy.” West Coast have slipped to third spot following two straight losses, and they’ll be aiming to bounce back against the struggling Crows at Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Eagles forward Mark LeCras is in doubt for the game with an injured wrist, while Josh Kennedy (leg) is facing an uphill battle to prove his fitness in time.

SPURS TO LISTEN TO NBA OFFERS FOR LEONARD

K

awhi Leonard is not on the block, but the San Antonio Spurs are all ears should any NBA team want to float a trade offer to acquire the soon-to-be-27year-old All-Star. Leonard and the Spurs are reportedly at odds, and a meeting with coach Gregg Popovich days after reports of Leonard’s trade demand sparked speculation that a deal could be imminent. This season, Leonard played in just nine games, averaging 16.2

points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. However, ESPN reported on Thursday that the Spurs will not be contacting teams regarding trade scenarios. Instead, Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford are fielding calls from teams making proposals to acquire Leonard. According to ESPN and Yahoo, the Los Angeles Lakers contacted the Spurs, but the conversation was brief and no players were discussed.

YOUNG PIES STAR FOCUSED

DESPITE AFL HYPE

...cont from front page >> when I was younger,” Stephenson said of the recent bye week. “It was quite a relaxing time. “They probably tell me the things I’m doing wrong than what I’m doing right. “I think I might cop it for that snap along the ground, but I’ll take that.” The miscued dribble kick that wandered the wrong side of the goalpost at the MCG was one of the few things he did wrong in another eye-catching display. Nathan Buckley knows a bit about bursting onto the AFL scene, having won the 1993 Rising Star award. The Pies coach is intent on bringing the sublimely talented youngster into the game the right way. “I view Jaidyn the way that I do my sons when I watch them play junior footy ... I’m quite critical,” Buckley said. “I see a lot of their good stuff but I see their margins for improvement. “What I would say as far as the Rising Star award and his capacity to impact as a first-year player ... there’s not many guys who can do what he’s doing. “And he continues to back that up week after week. “He’s still a young player and he’s got a lot of growth in him. “But what he brings is great energy, great intensity, he hits the scoreboard and above all that we love the fact that he plays his role within our structure.”

BLUE-COLLAR MIDS LEAD AFL BROWNLOW CHASE

orget show stoppers Dustin Martin and Patrick Dangerfield - this year’s Brownlow Medal winner is just as likely to be an old-fashioned blue-collar battler. With nine rounds remaining, Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell, Carlton’s Patrick Cripps and North Melbourne bolter Shaun Higgins have emerged as leading contenders for the AFL’s most prestigious individual honour. Each would be a worthy winner but would also be the least glamorous recipient since West Coast prime mover Matt Priddis’s surprise victory in 2014. The three most recent Brownlow Medallists - Martin, Dangerfield and Nat Fyfe - are poster boys for the modern AFL: explosive, dynamic midfielders with stacked highlight reels and the ability to play in multiple positions. Mitchell and Cripps, in contrast, are hard-nosed contested beasts whose best work is done at the bottom of packs rather than in open play. Higgins is a more versatile player but would be one of the most low-profile Brownlow winners in recent memory. Mitchell is the bookmakers’ favourite, followed by Cripps and Martin, while Higgins has surged

into contention along with West Coast free agent Andrew Gaff and Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn. The 25-year-old Mitchell started his season with a bang, breaking the VFL/AFL disposals record with 54 touches during Hawthorn’s win over Collingwood. An extraordinarily prolific ballwinner, Mitchell has gathered 40 or more disposals in six of 13 games. But he can consider himself lucky to remain in contention, having controversially escaped suspension for elbowing North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein off the ball. Fyfe was less fortunate. The Fremantle skipper has been in sensational form but hopes of backing up his 2015 triumph were dashed when he was suspended for striking Collingwood’s Levi Greenwood. Nine rounds is plenty of time for the two biggest names in the game to mount a late Brownlow push but neither Martin nor Dangerfield have quite reached their best. Tigers superstar Martin is likely to bleed votes to Trent Cotchin, while Geelong’s Dangerfield has spent more time forward this season to accommodate prodigal son Gary Ablett.
