Introduction from the CEO
W
e pride ourselves on being a dynamic company with a positive outlook on work and life. We need like-minded people to help us grow and succeed, and we want you to be a part of that success.
We care about the planet and the communities where we work. We like to give something back and we’re really proud of many successful community projects.
We recognise that happy employees make productive employees so we like to ensure our people recieve a competitive salary package and a comprehensive range of benefits, as well as a healthy work/life balance. We are highly professional and motivated with an open and supportive culture that creates a stimulating workplace. We thrive on having diverse teams - no politics, never boring.
If you like to travel, we work in some of the most interesting places on earth from California to Chad, Aberdeen to Azerbaijan, Algeria to Australia. You’ll work with some of the best people in the business – sometimes in pretty challenging conditions (Melbourne can be tough between the tennis and the grand prix).
The varying scale and size of our projects means you have the opportunity to work as part of a small, close-knit team or oversee a large team of several hundred people, dealing with multi-million dollar budgets. This variety means work is never dull at PSN.

How you will develop
W
e offer our graduates a thorough insight into the industry through technical and personal development activities, mentoring, and rotation around different projects worldwide. As a graduate you will enter a structured two-year training programme that gives you the best possible start in your chosen field. This programme includes extensive on the job training, internal and external training courses, and access to specific graduate development modules including our Developing Professional Programme. There will be opportunities to develop and take on real responsibilities early in your career, for instance, a recent major contract involved the transfer of 300 employees from the previous incumbent to PSN employment; despite the complexities, a graduate took the lead role and did a great job.
graduate brochure_09.indd 13
Whatever your discipline, whether engineering or commercial, we will support you in your professional and personal development. Our graduate programme has received external accreditation from ICE, IChemE and IMechE and we continue to look to our graduates for suggestions and inspiration for improvements. You will have a big role to play in your own development. So, whether you are looking for offshore experience, management skills or you have an eye on overseas opportunities, we will work with you to shape a training programme which suits you.

Why you should join us
W
e offer a generous range of benefits to our employees, including awardwinning staff development opportunities and a competitive salary.
Enjoy flexible benefits We appreciate that everyone has different needs: more holidays to maintain the work life balance, more money to your pension scheme or more cash in the bank. Flexible benefits allow you to have what’s important to you.
“The main benefit of flexible benefits is being able to pick and choose exactly what benefits you want. I wanted to take some extra days of holiday this year, so I traded that against some other benefits that I didn’t really need.” John Ritchie, associate process engineer Travel overseas We work in some of the most interesting places in the world. From Canada to Chad, Aberdeen to Azerbaijan, Algeria to the Philippines, our international reach provides fantastic opportunities to employees looking to broaden their horizons.
graduate brochure_09.indd 15
“I joined PSN as a graduate in January 2007, and relocated to Aberdeen from the Philippines not long after. Overseas travel was a major attraction to PSN for me as I was keen to get more exposure to other cultures, companies and projects. Since being in Aberdeen I’ve received valuable technical and on-the-job training, and coaching from experienced engineers. In three years time I hope to achieve ICE Chartership and use my experience to continue to develop within PSN’s network.” Rosa Cagantas, structural engineer
“This year I enjoyed a secondment to our Rong Doi project in Vietnam. It was great being able to hear different perspectives, and discuss other techniques, especially considering some of the ideas we discussed resulted in saved operational time and resources. I found the experience enlightening and really enjoyed meeting new people and learning difference perspectives. Personally I’ve brought back work experiences which I hope to apply to my projects in the future.” Scott MacLean, instrument and control engineer

Get an extra week’s holiday a year We offer 25 flexible days of holiday entitlement with an additional four fixed public holidays and four flexible holidays on an annual basis.
“I’ve really enjoyed both the career challenges and the social aspects that PSN has offered me. The holiday entitlement is good too and I use the extra time off to travel to locations further away that I wouldn’t be able to if I had less holiday entitlement.” Danielle Barnes, environmental associate Get dental and medical health care Bupa is offered to employees for medical cover and Denplan for dental cover, and there is an option to add family members.
“PSN has excellent flexible benefits which allow you to tailor your benefits to suit your requirements. I’ve taken advantage of the BUPA medical cover.” Daniel Fong, piping engineer Enjoy discounted gym memberships Our employees get discounted gym memberships at a number of gyms in and around Aberdeen.
“Outside of work I like going to the gym, so I take advantage of PSN’s discounted gym membership. It’s cost efficient and the gyms are well spread across the city so it’s easy to find one convenient for you.” Caroline Bett, associate electrical engineer

Develop your career Our staff development programmes have won us the Scottish Offshore Achievement Award in Succeeding Through People in 2004 and 2007.
“I joined the finance team in St John’s in November 2006 and have since completed my CPM certification, sponsored by PSN. I’ve really enjoyed my time so far with PSN and been very pleased with the training I’ve received. There are so many opportunities to fast-track your career at PSN.” Valerie Rodden, payroll accountant
“At 25 I’m PSN’s subcontracts supervisor, and responsible for reviewing our global subcontracts processes and procedures to share best practice across our global network. I joined PSN via the graduate programme and found the training a good way to sharpen your business skills. The coaching I received was a great foundation and the transferable skills I developed will be useful throughout my career.” Emma Taylor, subcontracts supervisor

Start the weekend on a Thursday The Alternative Working Week Scheme gives employees the opportunity to work a nine-day fortnight. This provides up to 20 extra days holiday per year.
“I work the AWW and think this is one of the best benefits any company could offer. The additional days off a year allow me to plan long weekends away without using up any of my holiday days, and its always beneficial running errands on a working day because of easier access to banks, post offices etc and still not losing any of your holiday days. All my friends in other companies are envious of this benefit.” Caroline Bett, associate electrical engineer

We are dedicated to being a good corporate citizen and neighbour because doing so reflects our core values. We believe as a company, and as individuals, that we can make a real difference to the communities in which we operate, and working for a company that truly makes a difference, will make a difference to you. Our community relations activities are designed to give back with a purpose, which we achieve by planned, proactive and budgeted programmes developed and managed locally according to local priorities and needs. Activities include support for education, charities, local organisations, and support groups. Of primary interest are issues of importance to PSN, our employees and our customers.

O
ur core values are the guiding principles in which we operate. Faced with difficult decisions, we choose options that best meet our core values. Health & Safety The health and safety of our people is our greatest responsibility. This makes it our top priority with no room for compromise. People Our people are our business - we treat each other with honesty, compassion and respect. Our people are our main business asset and their skills make us better than our competitors. We treat people fairly and reward them competitively - this goes a long way to attracting the best people and retaining the excellent people we already have. Localisation We nurture local businesses and skills to encourage sustainable community development. Through our network of expertise and experience, we bring value to the communities where we work. We draw on lessons learned and best practices from all over the world.
Relationships Strong relationships with our customers are vital to our business. We nurture these relationships to understand what our customers want and how we can best deliver it. We expect everyone to contribute in building positive customer relationships. Financial Responsibility We expect to receive fair reward for our business performance. Consequently, we expect to be paid on time just as we expect to pay our suppliers and sub-contractors on time. We carefully manage financial risk and demand clear reporting of financial performance in our business. Our business strategy is based on steady growth by selecting only those jobs we can deliver safely and make a profit. Integrity We act openly and with honesty - our code of ethics sets the minimum standard for our behaviour. People have different moral and ethical values - we respect this and set our own minimum standards which all our employees must follow. We will ensure that all of our operational activities comply with applicable local rules, regulations and other requirements.
Innovation We actively look for better ways of doing things, never satisfied with ‘good enough’. Our culture encourages people to collaborate, share ideas across our network and learn from each other. We recognise that not all innovations succeed but we test ideas quickly and learn early without taking large risks.
