• The word “jeans” has become synonymous with “Levi’s,” but Levi Strauss wasn’t the first to market these pants. Jean fabric can be traced back to Genoa, Italy and Nimes, France. Clear back in the 17th century, a sturdy fabric partly composed of wool was called “serge de Nimes,” which accounts for our term “denim.” Another linen/wool blend was popular in Genoa, which may be the reason for the word “jeans,” since “Genes” is the French word for Genoa. Both were generally used for work clothes and overalls. Genoese sailors also used jean fabric as a cover to protect merchandise on the docks from damp weather, as well as for their work pants. The fabric was dyed blue with indigo harvested from plantations in India. • In 1846, 18-year-old Loeb Strauss left his native Bavaria, Germany to join his older brothers in New York, where they operated a dry goods store. Four years later, with the California gold rush in full swing, Loeb, now Levi, moved to San Francisco to start up his own business, supplying the miners with durable clothing. turn the page for more!

• Strauss used his stock of brown cotton tent canvas to produce plain trousers, with no belt loops or back pockets, just a cinch belt in the back to hold them up. The pants were sewn in San Francisco, in a combination of factory and home sewing production. The overalls proved to hold up against the rough life of miners, farmers, and cattlemen, and Strauss’ business thrived. • In 1872, Strauss received a letter from one of his customers, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis. Davis wrote of the method he used to make trousers stronger by using metal rivets at the points of strain, such as pocket corners and the base of the fly. Davis wanted to obtain a patent for the process, but needed a business partner to finance his idea. He sought out Strauss as a partner, Strauss agreed, and in 1873, the pair were awarded Patent #139,121 for their riveted pants. • Manufacturing began on the copper-riveted “waist overalls,” the name given to the trousers. The brown cotton canvas pants were continued, and Strauss added denim, having it dyed an indigo blue, obtaining his fabric from Manchester, New Hampshire’s Amoskeag Mill. • During the 1880’s, additions to the overalls included their trademark orange stitching, the little front “watch pocket,” and a leather patch with an illustration of two horses sewn on the back waistband. Because the patent on riveted clothing was due to run out in 1890 (after which any company could manufacture them), Strauss wanted a memorable trademark on his product that would distinguish his from others. The leather patch accomplished this, and his original jeans were often called the “Two Horse” brand until the word “Levi’s” was registered as a trademark in 1928. continued on the next page

BLUE JEANS (continued):

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Cat Has Appetite for Plastic DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 19-month-old cat, “Sissy,” who loves to chew on plastic shopping bags and whatever other plastic she may find. This started about six months ago. I feed her and her two siblings very well. Is there anything I can do to get her to stop? -- Rae H., Weaverville, California DEAR RAE: Plastic shopping bags make a lovely crinkling sound when chewed, and the texture is quite interesting. While some of the cats I’ve cared for over the years couldn’t care less about gnawing on such things, others were fascinated with crinkly plastic, crumpled paper and similar interesting items. Now, I can’t tell you exactly why a cat picks a specific material to chew on. You should certainly take Sissy to the vet for a checkup and discussion about her new behavior. Often it’s not health-related. Sissy may be looking for a little more excitement in her life. The risk of chewing on plastic, of course, is that she might ingest bits of it, and that can cause significant health problems. A small bit of soft shopping-bag plastic may not seem like much, but if she’s also sampling, say, the harder plastic of water bottles or milk jugs, small shards of those can be swallowed. In the short term, I recommend keeping plastic shopping bags and other tempting items out of Sissy’s reach, and spend more time playing with her and scattering cat-safe toys around the house to try and redirect her attention.

• The weight of the denim in the original riveted, button-fly pants was called 01-weight. When lot numbers were assigned to the various products, these pants became known as 501’s, the name still in use today. The less-expensive version were known as 201’s. • The early 1900’s brought changes to the jeans industry. Strauss added two back pockets to his overalls in 1901. In 1902, Levi Strauss died at the age of 73, and bequeathed his company to his nephews. (Strauss’ descendants still run the company today.) The April, 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire completely destroyed the headquarters and factories of the company. By November of that year, a new factory had opened. In 1911, the company phased out the cotton duck canvas overalls entirely, offering only the blue denim variety. • Belt loops weren’t added until 1922; however, the suspender buttons were left on, along with the cinch on the back of the waist. That little red tab on the right back pocket was first used in 1936, a folded red ribbon with the word “Levi’s” stitched in white, and sewn into the seam of the 501’s pocket. Zippers were used for the first time in Levi’s in 1954. Clear until 1960, the Strauss Company continued to call the 501’s “waist overalls” rather than “jeans.” • Levi’s 501’s gained in popularity when actor John Wayne wore them in the 1939 western film “Stagecoach.” • In 1946, another brand of jeans specifically for cowboys and rodeo wear came on the scene. Wrangler tailors designed their jeans for in-saddle comfort, and with rivets placed so as not to scratch the saddle. Their ad campaigns featured pictures of rodeo legends and cowboys in the saddle.

Make Or Break: The Home Inspection

By Sam Erickson The home inspection can be a tense time whether you are buying or selling. If you are like most people, you’re not an expert on the inner workings of your home, and, while you might be able to fix a toilet or change out a light fixture, removing mold or lead paint is a completely different story. Because inspections happen after an offer has been accepted, both parties have a lot riding on a successful home inspection. Home inspections vary by state, city and county. Taking into account all of the various requirements, there are some general things you can count on in a home inspection. A home inspector will check the home for major health problems: asbestos, radon, lead, rodents and often mildew or mold. Any major problem in one of these areas could be potentially damaging to a home sale, as these indicate systemic problems with a home that could cause major repairs. In addition to these health and safety issues, other large-scale issues might include the life of the roof and the condition of the major systems

in the house—air conditioning and/or heating. Most inspections will also look at the state of the appliances, plumbing, driveways, fences, sidewalks, exterior siding, electrical system, chimneys, ductwork, garage and others. As you can see, there are a lot of places to find flaws that homeowners don’t think about every day. If you are selling your home, one thing you can do is to hire a home inspector yourself to give the home a thorough check before you ever put it on the market. As you tackle the issues, keep copies of any contracted work or receipts that you used to fix the home. These can be useful when selling the home. If you decide to sell within a few years, you will know what areas still need repairs and be able to tackle them as cheaply as possible without endangering the sale of the home. When you buy your home, keep a copy of the inspection report in a safe place. It will give you a detailed account of what needs attention in the home. Once you have your inspection report, you can use the expertise of your real estate agent to negotiate what will be fixed, what will be left and any change in the price based on the condition of the home. The seller can often make minor repairs easily and fairly cheaply. Major repairs could be a different story, though. For a seller, the motivation can often be to find the cheapest contractor to do the repair work, so it is often advantageous to the buyer to ask for a reduction in the overall price and handle the repairs so that they are satisfied, instead of relying on the goodwill of someone abandoning a connection to the home. The process of the home inspection can be daunting, and it is important to get a reputable, independent home inspector mutually acceptable to both the buyer and the seller. In the end, the inspection provides more information, and that is always a good thing. Answers on Page 8

BLUE JEANS (continued): • During the 1950’s, wearing jeans became a symbol of teen rebellion, with film stars such as James Dean popularizing them in the 1955 film “Rebel Without a Cause” and Marlon Brando wearing them in 1953’s “The Wild One.” Some theaters, restaurants, and schools even banned the wearing of jeans. In 1951, crooner Bing Crosby, who loved his Levi’s, wore them on a hunting trip to Canada, and was refused a room at a Vancouver hotel, since they were considered low-class. The Strauss Company responded by custom-tailoring a denim tuxedo for the singer. As the years wore on, jeans became more acceptable, and became the norm for casual wear. • The 1960s brought bell-bottom jeans, Strauss’ first pre-shrunk jeans, and the very first television commercial for Levi’s jeans. • Designer jeans were launched in the 1970s, with Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Ralph Lauren, and Jordache leading the pack. Distressed jeans came into high demand in the 1980s, with worn, faded, and “stone-wash” jeans commanding up to $200 a pair. Various chemicals, special dyeing methods, sandblasting, and adding pumice stone to the washing process produces the worn, vintage look. Stains, tears, and repairs add to the appeal of distressed jeans. • Hundreds of songs have been written about blue jeans over the years, including “Angel in Blue Jeans,” “Devil in Blue Jeans,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Venus in Blue Jeans.” • In 1993, the Strauss company sponsored a contest to find the oldest pair of Levi’s in America. Named the “Send Them Home Search,” the challenge generated a winning pair dating to the late 1920s. • The average American owns seven pairs of jeans.

UNUSUAL PLANTS:

INDIGO

What makes our blue jeans blue? Follow along as Tidbits investigates the indigo plant and the blue dye obtained from it. • The indigo plant is a member of the legume family, with more than 300 species identified. Just two of these 300+ are used in the production of indigo dye. The plants, anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.83 m) tall, have a single woody stem, with oval dark-green leaves and clusters of red flowers resembling butterflies. The dye comes from fermentation of the leaves. • Use of indigo dye dates back to ancient times, with Egyptian mummies from 2400 B.C. found wrapped in linen with deep blue stripes. A cuneiform clay tablet from 600 B.C. containing a recipe for dyeing wool was found in Mesopotamia. Explorer Marco Polo brought word of indigo back to Europe after his late 13th-century travels. It was about that time, in 1289, that the first known recorded use of the word indigo as a color in the English language was made. • The plant gets its name from the Greek word “indikon” and the Roman term “indicum,” both of which translate “a product of India,” where at least 50 different species of indigo are grown. • The process of extracting the dye from the plant leaves and converting to indigo has been the same for thousands of years. Tanks are arranged in a step-like layout. Freshly-cut plant leaves are placed in to top-most tank and an enzyme is added to break down and ferment the leaves. Fourteen hours later, the resulting liquid is drained into the next tank and stirred with large paddles to mix it with air. continued on the next page

SCAM ALERT By Tresa Erickson

It’s sad but true. People can be dishonest, and some people make a living at it. They may sell you something you never receive or try to steal your personal information over the phone. Scams do happen, and you need to be on the lookout for them. Here is a brief list of some common scams to be aware of. Bank Scams There are a variety of bank scams. One of the most common involves advance-fee loans. A person guarantees they can get you a loan or credit card no matter what the state of your credit. All you have to do is wire them some money in advance to cover the processing fees. You wire the money and never hear from the person again. You might also be contacted for help in investigating embezzlement at your bank. As instructed, you go to the bank, withdraw some money and give it to a person posing as a detective. The detective thanks you for your efforts and promises to return your money to the bank but never does. You lose out again. Charity Scams These solicit donations to charities that either do not exist or do exist but will never benefit from your donation. A person might call, email or approach you asking for a donation. You agree, but the only person you end up helping is the scammer when

they take off with your money. A person might also approach you on the street and ask for your help in delivering a donation to a charity. You agree but must put up some money to show you are of good faith. The person takes your money, hands you an envelope and disappears. You are left with empty pockets and an empty envelope. Check Scams These can occur in a number of ways but always involve a phony check. A person might buy an item from you, hire you to work at home or congratulate you on having won a prize. They will present you with a check and request you deposit it and wire a portion of it for processing fees or taxes right away. You deposit the check into your account and wire the money requested. Later, you receive notice from the bank that the check is not good. You lose the money you wired, plus any charges now owed to the bank. Distraction Burglaries These may involve one or more people. One person might ring your doorbell and distract you while another enters your back door and steals whatever is within reach—your purse or wallet, cash, watches, jewelry. If working alone, the person might claim to be from a business like the utility company, enter your home to check out an issue and steal valuables when you are not looking. Grandparent Scams These tend to tug at the heartstrings. A person calls claiming that your grandchild or someone else you love is in trouble and needs money right away. You wire the money only to discover later that your loved one is fine. Home Repair Scams These can occur in a couple of ways. A person may ring your doorbell, ask if you are in need of some home repairs and offer to complete them at a low cost. All you need to do is put down a deposit. They will either take your deposit and run or make the repairs and bill you for additional supplies and labor. Either way, you lose some cash. Lost Scams These arise out of lost ads. A person calls you about an ad you placed regarding a missing pet or item. They claim to have found the pet or item but live far away and need money for shipping fees. You wire them some money but never hear from them again. A person may also claim to be a police officer that has located your pet or property and needs your personal information to file a report. You assume the person is legitimate, give them your personal information and open yourself up to identity theft.

Lottery Ticket Scams These play on the hopes of winning the lottery. A person contacts you by phone, mail or email and offers to get you lottery tickets in another state and hold onto them for you in case you win. You agree and send a check every month for the tickets. You never win, of course, and the person continues to take your money for as long as you allow. Mail Theft Mail theft may take place at any point during the day. A person removes mail from your mailbox and opens it, looking for money-making opportunities and personal information. They cash all checks received and wash, rewrite and cash all checks sent. They steal all credit card numbers listed and use them to make purchases. They alter all loan and credit card applications so they will receive the payment or the card. Merchandise Scams These occur mainly online. You find a great deal, order it and receive a call about accessories available for the item. You pass on the accessories and receive notice the item is no longer available or you never receive it at all. If it does arrive, you are charged for extras listed in the fine print you failed to read on the website. Either way, you’re out some money. Psychic Scams These can take place by phone, email or in person and work well on individuals having a run of bad luck. A psychic approaches and claims you have been cursed. They convince you that you need cleansing, a process that takes a lot of time and a lot of money. You pay for a process you do not need. Sweepstakes Scams These occur in a couple of ways and appeal to individuals who like to win. A person calls stating you have won a sweepstakes but must pay the taxes on the winnings before claiming them. You wire the money only to never receive any winnings. In another variation, you might be told you’re a finalist and will increase your chances of winning if you buy something. You purchase the item but never receive it or any prizes. These are just some of the more common scams. There are hundreds more out there and more everyday. It pays to be on your guard. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and take the time to check out every offer that comes your way. Never give out your personal information, sign a contract or make any sort of payment without knowing for certain that the business you are dealing with is legitimate. Use a secure mailbox, remove mail promptly and shred all documents containing personal information. Act with caution, and should you ever fall prey to a scam, report it and help protect others.

• The dye settles to the bottom of the tank, while the liquid is drained off. The remaining dye is heated to stop further fermentation, then filtered, and dried to a thick paste that can be formed into cakes. • In ancient times, indigo was considered a luxury item and was so valuable, the cakes were used as currency. • As demand for indigo increased throughout Europe in the 1600s, the supplies in India were not enough, and the plant was cultivated in the New World, with Spanish explorers bringing indigo to Central America (particularly El Salvador and Honduras), Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. • It takes a lot of leaves to produce a small amount of dye, but not a lot of dye to color jeans, only a few grams for each pair. • When Levi Strauss’ denim jeans became popular, indigo production could not keep up with the demand. Chemists set to work researching a synthetic method to produce the dye. In 1883, a German chemist named Adolf von Baeyer developed a process to produce indigo, leading to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery. • Today, most denim is dyed with synthetic indigo, with about 20,000 tons produced every year for jeans. Cotton and linen threads are soaked and dried in dye 15 to 20 times to achieve the hue. Silk threads are dyed more than 40 times. The color can be deepened by drying in the sun. • In the color spectrum, indigo is one of the seven colors of the rainbow, located in the spectrum between 420 and 450 nanometers in wavelength.

• Grasshopper pie might not be too appetizing if you take its name literally. In the original version of this pie, a favorite in the Philippines, real grasshoppers are used, but that’s nothing like the North American version. It’s a recipe that’s been around since the 1950s, and features green crème de menthe liqueur and whipped cream. The liqueur lends its bright green color to the confection, resulting in the name. It’s usually made with a chocolate cookie crust. • You can’t guess the ingredients of Shoofly Pie from its name. This sweet treat has its origins in the 1700s and comes to us from the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch. As these settlers sailed to North America, they brought non-perishables that could endure a long boat trip, including brown sugar, molasses, lard, and spices. Shoofly is a sweet coffeecake-like treat with a molasses crust and topped with whipped cream. It’s believed it got its name from the sweet molasses odor attracting flies that must be “shooed” away. • Funeral pie doesn’t sound very appetizing, but pay no heed to the weird name. It’s another delicious Amish pie consisting of raisins, cinnamon, and allspice. It received its name because it was usually given to comfort a grieving family in the loss of their loved ones. But it’s not just served at funerals, you can also sample the goodness at a wedding celebration. • Banoffee pie shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. It’s an English dessert pie invented in East Sussex, England in 1971, and combines bananas, cream, and toffee. Variations include the addition of chocolate or coffee or both.

Levi Strauss wasn’t just a jeans maker. He was also the treasurer of the San Francisco Board of Trade, and a director of the Nevada Bank, the Globe Insurance Company, and the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company. He provided funds for 28 scholarships at the University of California, Berkeley, which still exist today. When he died in 1902, his estate amounted to almost $6 million.

Winter Vegetable Chowder

With our freeze-now, serve-later vegetable chowder, you can give your family a comfy meal on even the busiest weeknight. This thyme-scented chowder boasts a creamy finish thanks to a dose of half-andhalf (or light cream, for the calorie-watchers). 6 medium leeks 2 tablespoon olive oil 4 medium stalks celery 3 medium parsnips 2 medium red potatoes 1 butternut squash 2 can vegetable broth 4 cups water 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves, plus thyme sprig for garnish 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup half-and-half or light cream 1. Cut off roots and trim dark-green tops from leeks. Discard any tough outer leaves. Cut each leek lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/2-inchwide slices. Rinse leeks in large bowl of cold water; swish to remove sand. With hands, transfer leeks to colander, leaving sand in bottom of bowl. Repeat rinsing and draining, several times, until all sand is removed. Drain well. 2. In 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium-high until hot. Add leeks, celery and parsnips, and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until all vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. 3. Add potatoes, squash, broth, water, thyme, salt and pepper; heat to boiling on medium-high. Cover; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer about 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in halfand-half and heat through, about 13 minutes. Spoon half of soup into tureen and garnish with thyme sprig; then spoon remaining into freezer-safe containers. Yields 15 cups, or 8 main-dish servings. To Reheat After Thawing: Top of range: In covered saucepan, heat to boiling on medium, about 25 minutes, stirring often. Microwave oven: Heat in microwave-safe bowl, covered, on Low (30 percent) 10 minutes, stirring once or twice, then on High 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once.
